Well, I know pretty much everything that can be said about this album
has been already. But I nonetheless feel the urge to share my thoughts.
I've had the album for a week now (ordered it from CDNow and it only
took them 4 days to ship to Canada - not bad!), so it's had some time
    to sink in...

Anyway, the first word I can think of to describe LTE is WOW! With all
the hype I was kinda waiting for a letdown (that's what happened with
FII), but in fact it was the total opposite! I haven't listened to
anything else since I got this CD (the Royal Hunt disc I ordered with
it will just have to wait in the shrink-wrap for a while), and I've
taken it with me everywhere I go!

LTE, being all-instrumental, and being that the guys didn't hold back
any of their creativity for the sake of "good songwriting", or to fit in
vocals, may be the best album of all time for me. It's right up there
on the same level with I&W, and only time will tell which is better now.
Not only did LTE blow me away the first time I listened to it, but it
continues to grow on me with each subsequent listen. I&W is the only
other album that's had such an awesome effect on me. And then when I
think "and this was all written and recorded in a WEEK", I can only
    shake my head in disbelief...

Anyway, enough rambling... other than Chris & Kevin's Excellent
Adventure, which seems kinda pointless, I absolutely love every song
on the CD. I originally thought I probably wouldn't like 3 Minute
Warning that much - I knew it would feature awesome playing, but
doubted whether it would feature the same kind of musical ideas th
other songs do, and whether it would flow - but that changed pretty
quickly. And the last 10-15 minutes of the track are just unreal.
Rudess is just AWESOME on it. Maybe I'm biased because I've played
    keys/piano since a pretty young age, but I think he's definitely a
level above the rest of the band, technically and creatively. The
thought of DT with Jordan as the keyboardist scares me. (Nothing
against Derek - he can play, but I can't see DT writing another song
as good as LTL with him.)

My next priority is to get a copy of every other album Jordan has
played on. But I'm in no hurry, I'm not gonna want to stop listening
    to LTE any time soon.

I think with virtually every official live disc released, there will

Somebody asked about Anekdoten....excellent band. *VERY* highly
recommended, although they definitely don't resemble DT much. Take
Wetton/Cross era King Crimson and toss in some Van Der Graaf Generator.
Frist album is Vemod. Good stuff, extremely heavy, and more melodic and
structured than their second, Nucleus. Nucleus is more experimental, and
shows the band moving in new directions, away from the KC and VDGG
areas. Vemod is really, really dark, but Nucleus is even more so. Both
albums have some extraordinarily delicate pieces that accentuate how
intense the angular, angry ones are. Setup is bass (distorted
Rickenbacker...sounds a lot like Wetton), guitar (somewhere between
Fripp and Howe), drums (thankfully, this guy isn't a Bruford clone, or
else this band would have serious originality problems...sounds more
like a subdued version of Alan White...big heavy pounder with brains and
jazzy chops), and a cellist, believe it or not. I can't think of any
other band with a cello as part of the regular format. Violin, yes.
Cello, no. The guitarist and cellist also do LOTS of mellotron, and
they'll often use several different sounds at a time, which makes a
really interesting effect. (Nucleus has a lot of vibes sound on it,
which is really cool.) Somebody else posted that Anekdoten had broken
up....Anglagard did, but not Anekdoten. Anekdoten just put out a live
album, I think (haven't heard it) and they're working on a third album.
Very recommended to those who like their music balanced between "balls
and chunk" and delicacy, and technical fireworks and soul. Warning: this
is extremely intense and dark and taut...don't get it if you're on
    antidepressants.

With all the recent gushing about SG, I had to give a few of the reasons that some people get the "cheesy" impression from Shadow Gallery - Carved in Stone.

    - As mentioned before, the production (sound) is not quite up to par.

    - The lyrics tend to display an overt religious tint. You could categorize SG as a "Christian" rock band. This may be a plus for some, a minus for others. Can contribute to a cheesy feel for some. (I'm not trying to start a jihad here, just pointing out the obvious.)

    - Don't forget the cover. The cover artwork has nice coloring, but like the production, it does not have a "professional" feel. More like a 7th grade art student. (Perspective is way off).

    - That long silence and the "knocking".

Any one of the above items could easily be overlooked, but when they are added together, they = cheese.

What would I recommend before SG?

all of you, please do order Discipline's newest album "Unfolded Like Staircase"....besides the fact that these guys are local to me....and the fact that I saw them open for Echolyn about three years ago)....i got it (ULS) just before going on vacation, and I just got back, but what I've listened to so far, is like, holy (expletive) coolness....think Gabriel-era Genesis, with King Crimson overtones (as the name of the band suggests), and you barely begin to scratch the surface.....I owe these guys a review of the disc, and I'm having trouble just coming up with where to begin describing the disc...... some really sweet stuff, this is......

Great stuff if you've got a pegleg, a keg of rotgut, and a woman's blouse on. It's sounds a little Yngwie'ish to me, but it's still not bad. I like The Damnation Game better than The Divine Wings of Tragedy, though. I still haven't heard their first one or their latest. Michael Romeo's a damn good guitar player, tho.

    >I haven't heard their eponymous 1st album. Same lineup? Same style? >How's the production? Anyone know?

The 1st album's pretty good. I really love the song, "Say Goodbye to the Morning." The epic 17:22 minute song "The Queen of the City of Ice" is really good, a nice rival to Ghostship which I love. For the most part it's (cover your eyes, Brendt!) rather wussy and some of the choruses remind me of (heheh) Night Ranger. heheh, but I still like it. I be a wuss. The lineup is still the same guys minus Gary Wehrkamp and Kevin Soffera. Don't worry, there's drums though. :) I can't wait till I get to be in a prog band so I can wear pirate clothes. :) As far as I can tell, it's not completely programmed drums. There's a line in the notes stating: "Additional performances by: Drums and Percussion." I dunno if that reflects one song or several songs. It doesn't say.

It is way too disjointed. And every song has a catchy chorus that comes completely out of nowhere, which gets a little old. But some of the pieces of songs are pretty cool, and a few of the songs end up being decent. If they could kick the habit of throwing in an abrupt transition every fifteen seconds, they might be worth listening to.

Well, Holy Land is definitely more progressive. But I personally like the more straight-ahead neoclassical stuff on AC better...there's some amazingly beautiful stuff there. Just personal preference on my part; they're both great.

And Freedom Call is pretty cool too, but I wouldn't recommend it as the first Angra CD to get.

Actually having earned my vocal chops singing in choirs from a young age I really appreciate the tight vocal harmonies on Alaska...to me it speaks of true group unity and cohesiveness. It takes a look of work and breath control to get that effect clear when you really just want to reach down and belt it out.

Actually Brendt just posted to the Gallery of Shadows list (shameless plug) about the production differences between CiS and the new one Tyranny. They have newer and better studio equipment now so that should clear up. > > I really like the CD, though; the lyrics are good and there's just enough > "musical masturbation" to keep me happy. =]

Actually Gery Wehrkamp and Kevin Soffera were not a part of the band yet. Well I just ordered the first SG today so I should have it soon. Gonna try to give it a fair couple of hundred listens.
