    Hi Ytsejammers!

Yeah! I've got their all CD's except Bleeding which was available in
Poland only once ( a friend of mine bought it before I did - regards
Jakub, hi, hi ). No other discs!
PW is a great band, but I don't know what will be their future after
guitarist and drummer left the band. The best for me is their first CD 'A
Social Grace' - is very progressive, much more than next CD's. After the
second album they changed a style a little, but are still fantastic.

Anyway, I visited Berlin two weeks ago, and there was DT playing at 15th
of March, so I went there. The show was incredible(as always - before
that I saw their Live in Tokyo vid. and fragments of pre-FII tour on
German VIVA TV). All of you, who had a chance to see them live know, what
the DT show means, so I don't have to tell you about that. Anyway, a
Swiss ytsejammer Choon wrote a first part of review from DT
German(European?) tour a few digests ago, so I'm waiting for the second
part. It will probably start from a gig in Berlin. Maybe anyone from this
list was there at 15th(hi Ties!).

    Mike
P.S. It was obviously planned trip to Berlin, howgh!

Ok...first off, Marilyn Manson, the man or the band, are NOT Satan Worshippers. Second, they are not a Prog-rock band, so you cannot expect Dream Theater complexity. Ever listen to Industrial-rock music? It is not supposed to be complex.
I will be the first to say that Manson's keyboardist, bassist, and guitarist are not as technically proficient as the guys in DT, but pay attention to the drummer some time. This dude really has his shit together. He mixes alot of real and sequenced drums for
a really kick-ass over all product. IMO, Manson does indeed write good songs, and I think one DEREK SHERINIAN will back me up on this one.
And whats with the comment about Nirvana? Comparing a Nirvana-type song to a Manson-type song is like comparing The Spice Girls to Type O Negative.

    Hiya guys,
Been a looong time since I posted to the jam but here's one to play
    catch up.

Is anyone planning on going to the Big Wreck concert in St. Louis on April
10th? (Dale?-thanx for the info on Pop's btw) If anyone is interested maybe
we can get together after the show or something.

Speaking of music in St. Louis, are there any musicians in St. Louis who
would like to get together and jam sometime. It's so hard finding prog
    players at Wash U. ;-)

As to Marilyn Manson, well, I like some of his stuff (I think his philosphy
is crap, but that's another story). He is best at synth/pop/metal. When he
tries to get too heavy he just sounds stupid. These people coauldn't play
their instruments to save their lives (with the exception of the keyboard
player whom I actually like, he's atmospheric rather than virtusoic). Some
of the recording techniques are interesting, nothing special, but cool. The
macintosh text-to speech technology is used occasionally within the songs
to add spooky words and such.
Probably the easiest album to get into is Antichrist Superstar.
It's more polished and poppy-not as good as Nine Inch Nails but similar in
parts. MM is less techno and more metal than NIN, but the industrial
aspects are still there. Portrait of an American Family is a pretty good
album. It is a little rougher than ACS but it seems more real and less of a
sell-out album. Also the guitar player seems to be more original (he still
couldn't play his way out of a paper bag) in that he does weird scratching
and atonal "gurrbles" and "warbles". It is interesting to note that POAF is
FAR more abrasive musically and verbally (Manson's favorite words are
"Fuck" adn "sodomy") than ACS which is more subdued tro appeal to the
masses. Probabbly the greatest strength of MM is Manson himnself. I love
his voice. If you like Korn your probably like manson in the Marilyn
changes the timbre of his voice often to achieve atmospheric affect. It
goes from spooky growls to castrati-chorus 50 times per song. The key thing
to listen to fin MM is atmosphere, much like Fates ApsoG (I'm gonna get
flamed for comparing the two ;-), but I like Manson better. If you are
looking for virtuoso music, you best look elsewhere.

In regards to the posting about Death's bassist: This guy sucks. I was told
that Death's individual thought patterns was a great, brilliant, and
complex album on the jam so I ran out and bought it. I've never heard
anythig that bad before. The first Sepultura album was FAR superior to this
noise fest. Take the recommendation of Death as a good band as a cautious
one. I was very unimpressed adn immediately sent the disk to some guy in
    Australia.

I'm glad that Mike is posting to the jam more often. This would be a great
opportunity for the fans as well as DT. I hope that he (and maybe even
Derek-wouldn't that be a trip?) continues to post and keeps us abreast of
    all things DT.

Thanks Mike-COme ot St Louis and we'll make you guys a banner out of a king
sized sheet or maybe we'll make you some smaller sheets so that Melody can
have some DT sheets for her bed 8-) LTE rocks

    Sorry so friggin' long,

I am having a hard time finding "Guitar Battle" with John Petrucci, George
Lynch, and others. I have looked in way too many Various bins. I now have
nightmares of the word Various and pictures of MTV CD's (well - the scantily
clad bikini babes made it a little more bearable).

Does anyone have this CD? Do you know where I can get it? I can't find it on
Online CD stores. If you can find it in your town, I am surrounded with
thousands of copies of LTE (they are everywhere here, sorry to piss anyone off
who doesn't have this). If you have Guitar Battle and can't find LTE, I'll
trade you. I'll buy you a brand new copy and send it to you if you can send
me a copy of Guitar Battle. It makes it worse because my new Young Guitar has
samples of Guitar Battle in it, and I don't have the CD!!! I'll be able to
play it myself before I find it.

Oh yeah, what is Black Light Syndrome usually under. I look under "Black",
"Bozzio", "Stevens", AND "Levin", but I can't find it. This isn't as
important because I can just order it from Magna Carta, but I'd prefer to just
    go pick it up ASAP.

*snicker* I'll answer this one. Marylin Manson believes that everyone
should strive to be different, because "normality" isn't cool.
(<----normality isn't cool. hehehehe) Of course they then proceed to play
music that involves nothing more than 3 power chords played over and over

    Okay follow this one
Derek Sherinian likes (loves) Marilyn Manson
    "brain-deads" like Marilyn Manson
    Therefore
    Derek Sherinian is "brain-dead"

Basically, that is what this message just said (DS is where the thread
started). I personally don't care for Marilyn Manson, however I try to remind
myself all the music I don't like doesn't suck. If people I like to listen to
had the exact same CD collection as I do, then I would probably get bored of
that person very quickly. Variety is the spice of life, right? I can handle
people putting down bands, but then to take it to the point of "Yo dude, you
like them? Man, they suck. Like, you suck." Does that make you feel
    "Superior"?

<< << Now I just read that the summer tour will be Deep Purple, ELP, and DT...
I read it from some Canadian radio metal program news email list. >>

Does anybody else think this SUCKS, if it's true? We might get a 45 minute
set, if we're lucky. Give me DT in a small club, for 2 hours, please!!!!
     Like JAXX again!!!!! >>

For selfish reasons, yes I agree it sucks. But think long term here.

    1) DT opens for 45 minutes for people there to see Deep Purple or ELP
(assuming they aren't in the parking lot having a beer party).
    2) These people "discover" that DT is the best band ever to grace the planet.
    3) They buy albums (in America, where musical tastes are less than prog)
    4) DT receives a pat on the back from their record company.
    5) DT get a "freer" reign in the studio for the next album, as well as the
ability to continue to make albums.
    6) You are rewarded with great new DT material.

So in the long term, I love it. In the selfish short term, yes I want to see
DT in a small club where I can show up early, get right up on the stage, and
see a 2 hour + set. BUT I want DT to be successful so I can continue to
enjoy their "new" music. That's why I am glad I discovered them early, so I can
have the memory of seeing them 10+ times in a small club!

    Hello!

I would like to thank Rogerio Brito for his comments about long
tracks. I've got all the tracks/albums he wrote about and i think
that new prog rockers should catch up with the "old" stuff to get the
roots of todays progressiv rock. I'm a reviewer in the norwegian
magazine "Tarkus" who writes about symphonic and progressive rock,
and i'm mainly listen to old progressive and symphonic rock from the
70's. My personal favourites in progressiv rock contains a lot of old

a lot to find in it.

Nah, seriously, I totally fail to see how anyone could have a problem

Put that aside, I'd give the whole bunch of crap a rest. Superior is such a great band that there's a LOT more to discuss in them and their music (the ones who agree with me that music is the subject that's supposed to be discussed here, raise your hand) other than their name, which is a cool name. Put history aside. None of you and have lived any of the shit you're referring to. Nor have any of the young Germans who have to take this sorta crap from all directions, from here to eternity Why isn't anyone thinking about THEIR feelings before starting another flamefest about things that have happened 50 frigging years ago and neither you, or the majority of the nation you keep on pointing your fingers at, have lived thru? The ones who wish to continue this discussion with me, email me privately, let's fucking get in the ring. But KEEP. IT. OUT. OF. HERE. This is a mailing list dedicated to music.

i Jammers, maybe you'll remember my ND story from December. Here is the follow up on seven shows in Germany. I'll keep this one shorter (time), including only concert reviews. I'll post the setlists next monday, including all of the exeptions I remember. Munich (March 10th 1998) ------ Hall: Colosseum, part of a former factory-complex where DT already played the year before. One floor, capacity about 2000 people. Sound: I did concentrate on the show that night, but didn't recognize anything particular, which means the general, good sound. Crowd: Peaceful, pretty high temperatures though. Extras: DT in a good mood, according to the stage acting. James whirling around!!! Pictures from the front row; I tapped on my neighbour's shoulder every time I took one and he leaned forward to cover me from the local security's view. :) JP seemed amused and made faces. Soundcheck: When I walked in in the afternoon at the hall, MP stopped playing and announced through the microphone: 'I've seen your pictures!' I didn't realize that he'd spoken to me. Only after the second time 'I've seen your photographies on the internet, you took them, didn't you?' I understood. Not the particular welcome I expected, when I sneaked through this open door... :))

Mannheim (March 11th) -------- Hall: Capitol, a former movie theater. A fan told me 'I've never left this place dissapointed after a concert.' Capacity about 1200, sold out completely. A big balcony, at least 1/3th of the crowd up there! Hot! Stuffed! Extras: Trial of Tears in the set. Some fans looked through my folder with about 2500 (from the shows in december) pictures of the band in 5 minutes... quick fans! A local security approached me after 1/3th of the show cause of my camera. I told him, this guy from the sound board said it was okay. 'Show me.' So we went downstairs and a guy from the crew I knew was just leaving this place, so I told him 'tell him, it's okay that I take pictures' what he did. 'It worked, didn't it?' He asked me after. :)) JP played with bare upper body for half of the concert. MP carried JP from stage during the solo of Metropolis. After the show, Mike came to chat with fans. He took my folder onto the bus for closer inspection. I had the WDADU sleeve signed and showed it around: Mike 10 years ago. In a review of this show I read: I had a folder with pictures dating 10 years back. :)))) Soundcheck: Again I walked in, but went out after a while ago, it didn't feel right to be in there, I mean I felt kinda as a disturbance. When I walked in, MP was playing the small drummkitt in front of the stage and JP hit the big one synchronously. Than they changed instruments, JM (!) also played the small kitt while MP picked up the bass. DS on guitar, MP and DS on alternating on vocals. They jammed several bits of covers, later MP on drums and 'singing' (sounded terrible :)))))) the first minutes of 'Crazy Train' by Ozzy. Duesseldorf (March 13th 1998) ---------- Hall: Philippshalle, capacity 8000, some 4500 people present. A sports- and concerts hall with seated sides.=20 Crowd: Easy, got through to the front during Ytsejam. Lights: Because of the size of the hall, every bit was used. It looked about like this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo=09=09=09oo oo oo oo=09=09=09oo =09 oo

    s s s s r r r o b r r b o r r r r b b r o b b r b r r b r b b o r b b r s s s s

oo = floodlights towards the audience o = orange spot r = red spot b = blue spot s = moving lights not included two (?) stroboscopes (Metropolis)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- I particularely liked the lights during the first (changing - set 1 or 2)part, during Peruvian Skies, the keyboard solo and during Metropolis. Watch out, very accurat, exactly reflecting the sound, very impressive also the artificial mist from DS's side. One of the busdrivers (Bustrip from the Dutch fanclub) realized just in front of a nearby trainbridge, that his bus was too high to fit under. So cars had to drive back to let him turn around. This happened in midst of a construction site, one way, crossroad. It took some time.:)) Sound: Good!!! A couple of moments, when James was quite loud. Extras: JLB improvised a lot! Towards the end of the set, he seemed to have some timing problems.=20 Peavy and Spyros of German band Rage were present, as fans! Peavy said, he has most of DT's records (all?). Jazzy keyboardlayer in Metropolis. Good merchandise sales. Aftershow: Steffen from the Mirror and Denis (Quote:'spelled with one 'n':) ) from Theater of Dreams were present. Got my pictures back and passed them on to Steffen.=20 Talk to MP about tattoos, he also showed us his daughter's footprint with her name and date of birth (upper back, left side). Question: 'Are the others comming out, too?' MP: 'Well, actually they have to.' DT got easter-pastry from a fan's mother(!). I asked JP:'Does your solo possibly sound like Van Halen?' 'Yes. I watched in Japan a Van Halen video and than deceided that it was about time that I'd write a solo myself again.'

Munster (March 14th 1998) ------- Hall: Big hall again and about 60 miles from the former day apart. Capacity about 7000, but only some 2500 present. Sound: Due to the pretty empty hall: echo, hard to mix. The vocals were loud and the bass pretty persistent with little middle range at

    times (keyboards, guitar.)

More will follow soon. Cheers Choon-Kang
