    Some Chris or whoever said:
    >IMO, Manson does indeed write good songs, and I think one DEREK SHERINIAN
will back me >up on this one.

And Derek's approval is supposed to mean something about the musical integrity
and/or quality? He played in *Kiss* for God's sake. Nothing lamer than
supporting an argument by making the conclusion that because someone semi-famous
likes it, it must be good. This is the kind of sheep-like behavior that keeps
the testimonial form of advertising alive. "Well, if OJ endorses the Ginsu, it
    HAS to good!" Bah.

CD of the Day: Primal Fear - Primal Fear, and if I say it's good, it must be.

Yeah, I'll try to make it to the Big Wreck show in St. Louis. I
remember seeing that advertised now (isn't it at Mississippi
Nights?). From what I remember, I think the ticket price was
relatively low, too. Anyway, yeah, if anyone else goes, let's hang
    before/during/after the show.

Anyone besides me having these thoughts?

DT headlining in smaller clubs on leg 1 of FII tour - 2+ hours of music -
    excellent!

DT leading off DP/ELP/DT tour - larger venues - more exposure - BUT lucky to
get 1 hour of music! - Ugh!!!!!!!!
How dramatically will they have to change their setlist? Do they have time
    for 10+ min of ToT?
Gotta do the more recognizable (read airplay) tunes to this crowd - BMS, YNM,
    PMU, LIE etc.

So I got into the Queensryche website. Slash? Nah. Looks more like Alex
    Skolnick to me.

So now MP wants everyone to throw banners and big posterboard cards up
on stage at him? Man. I feel bad. :)

MM: I have the same problem with Marilyn Manson that I have with the
Grateful Dead - I don't mind the band, or the music, so much as I can't
stand the rabid fans. I guess I was turned off when I was in college,
and my roommate was a Shiite Deadhead - wouldn't even bother listening
to anything else. I see a lot of the same qualities in MM fans - they'll
only listen to MM, they won't bother with anything else, and they're
snobby about it. The difference is, though, is that the *rabid* Dead
fans seem to be more educated than the MM fans, most likely due to age.
And I'm not lumping casual listeners like you, me, or DS in here, mind
you - I'm only talking about the hardcore people. And the funny thing
about MM fans is that in their quest for individuality - they all look
    the same.

Short songs? Anyone remember S.O.D? "This is the anti-procrastination
    song!" (end of song).

And I liked the bass player for Death. If you can get past Chuck's
vocals (I'm not a fan of the 'Carbonated Burp' school of singing), then
it's a pretty good album, I thought. Though not as good as Sepultura's
first one. Or their latest one, for that matter.

I'm friggin' bored. Can you all tell?

ok, let's nip this one in the bud. there are lots of people out there
who think you can judge music to be good or bad, to suck or not suck,
with loads of different justifications for those judgments. there are
others who will stand adamantly behind the idea that music cannot be
judged, there's just... well, different music, that's all.

i personally am in the former camp, but i know that there is no way i'll
convince someone of the latter that MM sucks. if a person beleives that
you can't judge music to suck, there's no convincing possible. however
i have a right to think they suck, to have no respect for thier musical
ideas and statements. there's no point in arguing over this, though...
i think past discussions about this have gotten precisely nowhere.

Just catching up on Ytsejams, and I see people wondering about Marilyn Manson,
appeals and such. I personally like the drum beats from "Beautiful People",
and the whole music of "Antichrist Superstar". I must say, one of the things
that attracts me the most is Manson during interviews. he comes across with
both normalcy and ecentricity. I would say abnormal, but it conflicts with the
normalcy. his messages are often misread from his music. ideally, he wants
his music to promote a dialogue betweeen parents and their children. he would
prefer that parents, instead of censoring thier kids music, teach their kids,
so their kids can choose right or wrong. he also has some very funny
    comments...one I remember from a Politically Incorrect:
(Christian Advocate, abbreviated CA, and Manson, abbreviated MM):
CA: "You're not Hitler, your not...., your not any of these people, their all
          dead!"
    MM: "What about Elvis?"
    CA: "You're not him either!"
    MM: "How do you know?"
CA: "You don't shake your hips like him."
MM: "You don't know, you've never seen me."

I personally got a laugh out of it. and no, I am not bashing Christians
(personally, I'm Baptist, somewhat practicing, just not attending Church like I
should be). he's human, as well.
another way to describe him is the Ozzy of now. in fact, some of the
rumors I hear about him sound vaguely familiar to some of the things Ozzy was
accused of doing early in his career!

just my two cents. sorry if I got carried away! each to their own opinion!

Recently I've seen people post about several different issues of
interest, so I thought I'd give my thoughts.

    1. Deen Castronovo-phenominal drummer, as others have posted he's
played on many shrapnal records as well with pop-rock bands such as
Bad English and I believe Hardline. He also played on G/Z/R's (Geezer
Butler's) first album. I've also seen one of his instructional videos
which was incredible. Unlike some artist videos that are only cool to
watch, his actualy gives some valuable playing tips. If you want a
album that captures his playing well then check out James Murphy
    Convergence.

    2. The New Maiden Album- If you liked X-factor you'll most likely
enjoy this one. It's basicaly a outgrowth from X-factor with better
production. I'm not totaly impressesd because I've been listening to
things such as LTE, Bozzio, Levin, Stevens, and Ty Tabor. It seems to
me that the music of other similar bands such as Judas Priest and
Bruce Dickinson have grown a lot more. However, if your a longtime
Maiden fan then you know what to expect.

    3. Death- This is one of the most technicaly impressive bands I've
ever heard. Their album Individual Thought Patters is amazing. They
are very hard to place in a category because they transend any genra
of music. They incorporate elements of death metal, progressive
metal, jazz, and fusion. The vocals are very nasty such as bands like
Obituary, but their playing is so great that it can be overlooked. I
especialy encourage any drummers and bass players (such as myself) to
go out and get this album. Ask any drummer who is a fan of heavy
music and thier likely to tell you that Gene Hoglin is one of the
baddest mothers on the planet. I warn you this is not an album for the
tame at heart because it is very heavy music, but if you enjoy
complex musical arrangements you should definately check it out.

    4. Bozzio, Levin, Stevens- Great album by three amazing players. If
you like LTE you should like this disc. However, don't expect it to
be as agressive. Their is some amazing playing, but the overall vibe
of the album is much more calm. I think musicians can appreciate this
album much more than the average listener.

    5. Shadow Gallery- As many have posted they are a great band. Yes the
vocals are a bit melodramatic at times, but they seem to escape from
the "typical" progressive band tag which is characterized by being
technicaly great, but incapible of writing good songs. If the only
progressive bands your into are Dream Theater and Rush then you
should also enjoy this band who seems to have an identity of thier
own unlike many of the progressive bands I've listned to.

Ok, so MM does have some pretty damn good music, if your into that kind of
thing. But they're whole publicity strategy involves making hate mongers
and posers love them. Some people look through this lame game and listen
    to the music.

If you want a MM cd, *don't* buy it! Get it used or make a copy, but
don't support these punks. I don't think they believe in a single thing
they're saying. They're just trying to be 90s Madonnas and shock everyone
and make all of the little 13 year old rebels love them just because their
    parents hate MM.

    Fight the pretentious!

Just wondering if you've heard any of Steve Reich's pieces. The Kronos
Quartet played in a recording of his piece "Different Trains" which is
brilliant. Also on that same CD (which is titled "Different Trains") Pat
Metheny plays another of his pieces "Electric Counterpoint" which is also an
    amazing piece.

Also do many of the people on this list listen to artists like Ralph Towner
and Pat Metheny? I'm surprized there isn't wider discussion of jazz and
classical music on the list, since most people here seem to be on similar
    wave lengths to me.

By the way, LTE, no disappointments here, no sob stories getting it either,
CDNow, four days, and I'm in the UK.

After hearing LTE, I wanted to hear more stuff from Mr. Levin. I saw in
the Magna Carta catalog the blurb about the Black Light Syndrome. I know
Levin and Bozzio and the real deal, but I don't really know much about
Steve Stevens except that he used to play with Billy Idol. How does he do
on this CD? Good, bad, should I get it? Also, where should one start
out in hearing Levin's best stuff with King Crimson? Thanks for your
    help.

    <<What is Marylin Manson like?>>

Well here I go with my two cents. Manson is by no means prog. More like
metal with atmospheric keyboards and fucked up industrial noises and shit.
This kind of thing has been done before and has been done better IMHO.

As for the man himself there is a lot of lies out about him. However a lot
of things are true. He has a new book out there called "A Long Hard Road
Out of Hell." Read it if you want personal info.

    <<Does it have any value?>>

Shit, that question is not really for me to decide. I think everything has
some value. What you need to ask yourself is does it hold any value for
yourself. All I can really tell you is that it holds no value for me. I
really do not like his music or the man at all. However, you should
listen/read and judge for yourself !

Hi there - it's me again...

I saw the Hollow Years video on VH-1 last friday and I'm wondering: why
do DT keep making those videos? from my point of view it's a waste of
money. No one plays those video anyway (except for occasional Friday
Rock Shows and Headbanger's ball (and now it's gone). I think they
should invest the money on something more important, like putting out
    Metropolis Pt. II (hint!)

Ofcourse all of the above is MHO and is not intended to hurt anyone. If
anyone is insulted by my above sentences, I apologize in advance. ;-)

    Cheers,
