    > prog metal? Chris, you know I think you are the man, and I hate to
    > criticize, but ... what is this?

As I state on my web page, and tell the listeners during nearly every voice
break, The Spirit of Radio plays "...your favorite hard rock, heavy metal,
progressive rock, and progressive metal." I was originally planning on just
playing prog, but there were a few reasons why I decided against it. First,
two hours of just prog could bore even me. I'd hate to think of what my
limited amount of listeners would think. Second, and more importantly, I love
metal, and just plain old hard rock (like VH and Tesla) way too much to not
    play them.

So, I try to play a healthy mix of everything each week. I generally play
something like 20% prog (like echolyn, Genesis, etc.), 30-40% prog-metal (like
DT, Enchant), 20-30% straight metal (like Megadeth, Anthrax, and stuff), and
the rest I fill up with what I simply think of as "good music," be it metal,
prog, rock, whatever. Hence the VH, DL, and Tesla.

So, don't worry that I'm selling prog short or anything. The goal all along
was to play a mix of stuff, and promote my favorite bands. When I first
started I knew how important it would be to support prog on my show, but after
one or two DJ meetings, I realized that it's critical just to support *music*.
Most of the shows on WCWM play some kind of electronic garbage or another,
and I felt it was equally important to support the work of all rock musicians.

Besides, I love 80s rock. I won't ever stop playing Mr. Big, Tesla,
Whitesnake, or any of the great stuff I grew up on in high school. :)

Thanks for your concern, Damon. :)

I was just spinning "Awake" last night, and had forgotten how much I like
"Innocence Faded," since it has been a while since I listened to this
album. Is it just me, or is the ending 1:26 section of the song THE
COOLEST ending to any song anyone has ever heard? I love it. It builds
with each phrase, and Petrucci's guitar work is outstanding. The only
other song ending I like as much is the ending to "Lakeside Park" by Rush.
    What do others think?

OK, these threads have probably been done before, so if it is too
repetative, please ignore my request. If not, please answer the following
    two questions:

    1. What is your favorite DT song?

    2. Assuming DT is your favorite band, what band would you choose as your
    second favotite?

Please send these directly to me, and I'll post them later. Just thought
it might be interesting to get a picture of the list-serve in this way.

I also caught Mtv's clip of the Bruford/Levin album!
I was hoping someone else was watching (it was 1:45 a.m. EST) and I
was glad to hear a sample of the album. Looks like yet another CD to
hunt relentlessly for; asking bewildered BestBuy clerks about "some
Bilbo Baggins and Levin Furniture album, or something"

Mtv surprised me this afternoon, also. They actually played a
Radiohead video -- "No Surprises", a wonderfully cynical tune.

I agree about the manson fans. about 99% seem to have their heads so
    far up his ass
its not funny. I have all the Manson cd's, a few bootlegs, a boot-video,
    and have been
to several shows. I also love DT, Nirvana, Tori Amos, Metallica, Rush,
    Judas Priest, Zeppelin,
Clapton, Testament, NIN, Faith No More, Ice Cube, Foo Fighters, Sister
Machine Gun...you get the point. All the Manson-heads out there should
open up a bit and at
least admit to listening to other stuff. :-)

    Hiya,

Didn't mean to offend you with thtis one ;-) I probably should have stated my argument a little better. I was excited by all of the hype on the jam about this great complex album. I was expecting some truly cool death metal (which is VERY hard to find-so far the only death metal I like is latter Sepultura which is like industrial death metal). What I got sounded like slop. The mix was horrible, The "carbonatted burp" (ROFLMAO) vocals were truly the worst that I had ever heard. And the playing was just unimpressive. The drums were so-so. Far to much emphasis on blast beats that go nowhere, the bass was sort of technical in places but he just never seemed to play anything that caught my ear. I can play most of what I heard on ITP as far a bass riffs go and this doesn't impress me. The guitars were just...there. The riffs were repeated far too often and the orchestrarion was just garbage. Death may be complex for a death metal album, but that is not saying very much. When I said that Morbid Thought's by Sepultura is better, well it is. While the playing/Lyrics/sound on Morbid Thoughts is trash (get your dog off of the mic kind of music-Coookie, I want cooookie_, at least it is more interesting to listen to than Death and Max Cavalera's voice finally improved inot something listenable, with some reasonable lyrics, and some kick ass songs. (everything on Roots). I guess I'm just bitter about Death because I was all worked up about it on the jam, bought it, and was so let down when my intestines jumped out and tried to strangle me to save me from the crap that came out of my CD player. I honestly count Death as the worst band I have ever heard (signed or not). Death is also the only recommendation from the jam that I have ever not liked. (I even loved Echolyn and Thought Industry ;-) Didn't mean to offend you or to imply that DiGiorgio couldn't play his instrument with some confidence. I'm just saying that I found nothing new or creative within Death's music or playing and that it just turned me off, fast.

    Thanks, Seth

    Howdy -

A couple of things this time...

First, I'm looking for some information on Saviour Machine. I have seen their name dropped several times on the Jam, so I hope that there are some of you out there who know more about these guys than I do. :-)

Based on recommendations on the Jam, and thanks to Jason Breitweg who was kind enough to include a track of theirs on a mix tape for me, I picked up the CD's of "Saviour Machine I" and "Saviour Machine II" and LOVE THEM!!! Awesome stuff.

Anyway, I found an unofficial website of theirs on the net, and they're talking about a CD called "Legend" and another on the way "Legend Part II". Also, they make reference to a "Live in Deutchland" CD (which I'd heard of before). I can't seem to find ANYONE online selling "Legend" or "Legend II". Can anyone help me out as to where I can get a hold of these discs?

Also, how is the "Deutchland" CD? Good quality? The track listing looks pretty awesome. Is there anywhere I can get it for relatively cheap? The one online store I checked (CDNow, I think) had it for like $30 or so. Thanks for your help.

    And... in other news:

    > I am having a hard time finding "Guitar Battle" with John Petrucci, George > Lynch, and others. I have looked in way too many Various bins. I now have > nightmares of the word Various and pictures of MTV CD's (well - the scantily > clad bikini babes made it a little more bearable). > Does anyone have this CD? Do you know where I can get it? I can't find it on > Online CD stores.

Thanks for jarring my memory on the title of this... it's been bothering me for weeks! :-) Anyway, I saw Jart Music advertising it sometime ago. You may want to drop them a line. (http://www.jartmusic.com/) By the way, I know JP is on this... what tracks does he perform on it?

Hope this helps, and hope to hear from any Saviour Machine fans soon.

    Thanks..... Matt T.

Death are back together? Just curious, I haven't really heard anything since last year, when Chuck Schuldiner was supposed to have a new band called Control Denied, or something. If Death are back, when will TSoP be out? I know I'm looking forward to hearing DiGiorgio on it . . . he was *sick* on ITP. Also, who will be their new drummer, since Hoglan's with Testament now? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I know exactly what you mean. When I saw the Ozzfest in Chicago last year, it was one of the shows that had Manson on the bill, and sure enough, their fans were out in full force. It was an incredibly hot summer outdoor concert, and GUYS were wearing long black dresses and black lipstick. And once Manson was done, almost all of those people left! They were either too stupid/loaded/drugged up/arrogant/whatever to stick around for Black Sabbath. If it wasn't for Sabbath, there wouldn't be a Manson. No respect for the elders I guess.

How ironic, their own attempt at individuality thwarted by their own lack of originality.

    > Short songs? Anyone remember S.O.D? "This is the anti-procrastination > song!" (end of song).

Yeah, and don't forget "Diamonds and Rust". Sometimes looking at a list of SOD songs is as good as looking the lyric sheet. Don't forget "Hey Gordy", "Momo", and "The Camel Boy", all songs under 5 seconds.
