That has been pointed out to me, but thanks anyway. I stand
corrected (which is a rare occurence). However, I pointed out that it
looks like Paul Stanley, not that it is he, which is true (especially
considering the obstructed, limited view of the shirt). So I wasn't really
wrong (I'm careful to cover myself that way), and I take back the part
about standing corrected. (Could I be any stranger?)
Oh, and to all who are concerned (who made it this far down a Jeff
Falk post), Portnoy is definitely wearing a Kiss t-shirt in a picture in
the new _Metal Edge_. I suppose he can be forgiven, though.

The above seems to be directed toward me (almost as if the poster
hasn't realized that I'm not taken seriously). Since I doubt he (or anyone
else) would bother reading a response, I won't provide a long one. I will
say that I never claimed to be a "doctor of logic," and his comment
indicates (not proves, as he asserts about me, just suggests) that he is
not far ahead of Marilyn Manson's pathetic hoard of followers. Unless
there's something I'm missing, of course.
I think all of you can start planning the big celebration. What
celebration? The celebration of Jeff Falk's removal from the list, of
course. I expect the list manager will finally do his job soon. (It only
took the Kiss list manager a week.)

I think that I don't get something here. First, I&W continue to
sell, right? Don't these sales count as I&W sales? The argument that they
have more fans now than they did isn't a strong argument, you see, because
part of the new fans buy I&W and there are other two kinds of people:

            * people who bought I&W and thought that, for some reason, Dream
Theater sucked, thus, avoiding any further purchase of their material (if
you doubt this is possible, go check the Gibraltar Enciclopedia of
Progressive Rock and you'll find some reviews about I&W by this class of
    people);
            * people who bought I&W and that really didn't like the way they
took from there (with the very heavy "Awake" and the simpler FII). This
kind of people (as the above type) didn't contribute to the FII sales
    figures.

So, the argument that they have more fans now doesn't necessarily
imply that the FII figures are higher than those from I&W era. Of course,
I'd like to be corrected here.

    > don't get me wrong i like a real long song as much as the next person,

Another thing that I don't understand: do you feel that the band
is cheating you when they present you a 30-minute song instead of 5
6-minute tunes? I certainly don't feel this way as I'm getting the same
amount of material. And the argument that a long song can't be veiculated
is also a fallacy, IMO, because a long song can have a section that can be
veiculated on radio or whatever the means of preference of the label
    signing the band is.

yea i agree that they are I&W sales, but, if I&W gets more sales than FII that doesnt mean it is doing better sales wise, well, it does in a way, but it's older, and the people who are buying FII and like it, usually buy the earlier CDs as well, so logically, I&W should sell more than FII, but with this in mind, i would think that the record company would not drop DT since theyre overall record sales are increasing.

<<<go check the Gibraltar Enciclopedia of Progressive Rock and you'll find some reviews about I&W by this class of people);>>>

where can i find the Gibraltar EncYclopedia of progressive rock? i've never heard of it? is it an online encyclopedia?

I&W has always been my favorite DT CD. when awake came out i was very disappointed, but i got used to awake, and grew to love it. i was very pleased with acos, and i like FII now almost, if not as much as i like I&W. the main reason i got into DT was that they had good keys, and now with FII the keys are much more dominate which is even better imo.

<<<<Another thing that I don't understand: do you feel that the band is cheating you when they present you a 30-minute song instead of 5 6-minute tunes?>>>

no, not at all, if DT came out with a CD that sounded like a bunch of green day songs i wouldn't feel "cheated" i might not like it, or not listen to it, but i wouldn't feel cheated. whatever dream theater writes is completely up to them. they are not out to please me, and who am i to tell them what they can and can not write/play?

REVIEW. Jaxx - Springfield, VA, 3/26/98. Uninterested? Delete now. This is a full course meal and there is no menu. Malmsteen isn't a member of DT, but I know that your heart will go on. This post may offend the vertically- and circumferentially-endowed members of the list. I mean you no disrespect.

At long last I have seen him. ALL of him. To all non-believers (and the rest of you Old School heretics who said "iniquity" wasn't a real word): The cover of "Facing The Animal" is in fact an altered (scrunched) photo. Yngwie after three weeks of being stranded on a desert island would not look like that picture.

Yngwie's picks. Yngwie uses the heaviest, thickest, most bullet-like picks I've ever seen. The purple Tortex ones are pretty run-of-the-mill, but the white customized ones with his signature on them could be loaded into a .357 magnum for taking down a charging bull from 30 yards away (or a charging Yngwie if you're ever brave enough to enter his castle and steal his golden doughnuts). The picks aren't bullet-shaped exactly, but shit man, they're ferocious. At the show I saw he threw out exactly sixty picks - ten on a pickstrip, five replacements of said strip on YM's microphone stand over the course of the 2-hour fifteen-minute show. Yngwie does not launch his picks with a frisbee-like motion, he sort of tosses them casually. Want a pick? Your best bet is to stand in the fourth body-row from the stage, no more than ten feet away from Da Man. He does not hand them out. That means all you front-row stage-gluttons are screwed. Especially the 6'5" front-row stage-gluttons who seem to comprise about 80% of all front-row stage-gluttons. Unless you stop Yngwie's arm motion in mid-air with the speed of Bruce Lee, his picks will be whizzed over your selfish 6'5" heads.

Yngwie likes it loud. This show was the loudest fucking show I've ever heard. His opening bar/bahr/bhar/bahrh chord got everyone's attention, like that scene in "Fantasia" where all the dinosaurs suddenly turn their heads and look in the same direction all at the same time. Yngwie was just warming up, but the volume of his opening "with the house lights still off to create a sense of total panic among my fans" licks let everyone know what was about to happen. Giant sweaty juicy rampaging nonstop shred pandemonium was about to happen.

At one point the entire audience turned its collective head and covered its collective ears. WHEN HE STARTS RIPPING THE STRINGS OFF OF HIS GUITAR, LOWER YOUR BODY CLOSE TO THE GROUND AND USE THE AUDIENCE AS A HUMAN SHIELD TO ABSORB THE SONIC BLAST. Your pathetic earplugs will not save you. No amount of wadded napkins plugged into every orifice of your body will be able to withstand the frequencies. I wish I knew what Yngwie was attempting to prove when he treated us to that noise. If a mad scientist crossbred a 747 jet engine with Celine Dion the end product wouldn't be even HALFWAY to reaching the volume and power and screeching cacophony of that bullshit.

Yngwie is a facial contortionist. Very expressive. Full of emotion. He had cool moves the way Steve Vai had cool moves. The difference was that Yngwie was completely aware of his cool moves.

Yngwie likes to play fast, and has flawless technique. HEYHEYHEY pay attention!! I didn't say he was perfect!! If you cut off both of Ron Thal's arms, he'd still have more licks up his sleeve than Yngwie. And I know many instructors or older fans of Yngwie will tell me that Yngwie "cheats" here and there or "doesn't play as well as he did before the car accident." But Yngwie does what he does with perfect consistency. I have a new respect for his playing because however short his list of licks may be within the world of guitar playing, he has mastered everything he's ever wanted to, which is more than I can say for myself. Can contentedness be confused with arrogance? Many moons ago Mozart asked the rhetorical question, "How many notes can one hear in a single evening?" Little did Mozart realize that his query would one day evolve into the now-famous expression "How many notes can Yngwie Malmsteen cram in before the inevitable implosion of the entire universe?"

T-shirts. Front: Yngwie WHO? Back: Yngwie Fucking Malmsteen THAT'S WHO!

Yngwie likes alcohol. I was lucky enough to catch the last song of the soundcheck through an open door at the back of the club (only 25 people in line ahead of me at the front door, no one in line behind me, why not go watch?). Summary: play a little, drink a little, hold that vibrato with my left hand while I guzzle with my right hand, shred some more, gulp gulp gulp, doin' good now, warmed up like a motherfucker, toss a few picks, maybe another 52 notes right here, crack open another cold one, etc."

Matt/s Levin/s (lead singer) kicks ass. Great vocal range, plus he has the best teeth I think I've ever seen on a lead vocalist. This guy definitely flosses regularly and stays away from coffee. He hit a high A during "Facing The Animal" that tore a lot of the skin off my face. Luckily I had a jar of vaseline and some paperclips with me for such disasters, but the guy behind me thought Yngwie was throwing more picks into the crowd. Anyway, Matt/s did all the previous material excellently. Matts Olausson is a wonderful keyboard player, he kept up with Yngwie's licks and did a beautiful solo of his own. I'd say he has a better understanding of things like "rests" and "tempo changes" and "silence" than Mr. Malmsteen. ;)

Yngwie is a closet country-guitarist. Boy was I surprised. :)

All in all I think Yngwie really likes what he does. My favorite part of his style is that he doesn't give a shit what people think of his attitude, his size, or his speed. He decided long ago what he enjoyed and chose to excel at it. He's a neobaroque guitarist whom I don't expect to play jazz chords just like I don't expect a neobaroque harpsichord player to suddenly whip out Pink Floyd tunes. Guitarists everywhere like to get mad at Malmsteen's repetitive song structures and soloing, but so what? I think Celine Dion has a great voice.

Yesterday I recieved a new DT bootleg called 'Fasten Your Seatbelts' 2 CD, recorded in Boston, MA, 13-12-97. The bootleg was recorded and put together by jammer Nick Bogovich. The boot contains the full FII show plus 5 FII demo's. The music from the gig is of very high standard, for an audience recording is as good as I have heard and could easily be mistaken for a soundboard source. There is no annoying audience noise or the sound of an audience member singing either :) The bands performance is brilliant, James sounds great and the new version of 'Met' with a bit of 'YYZ' thrown in being one of the highlights as well as the 'Fasten Your Seatbelts' version of 'Ytsejam'. The FII demo's are great too, with an improvement on the quality of the one's found on the net. All in all a great boot, one of the best I have in my collection, both performance and sound quality wise, for $25, it's great value. Nick has done a great job with this, I hope he makes another bootleg in the future....

Okay this may seem a bit out there but I think the best band for DT to open for would be Dave Matthews Band. Seriously if you took half of DMB songs and added crunchy distortion it would be a prog song. Ya know What i mean?...Plus DMB has a large following of fans, who I believe to be fairly openminded about music, at least all the ones I have talked to are cool. Also I have the 'A Kick Into a Dream' boot and I was wondering how it stands up to other boots in sound quality and music in general.

But that was definately the most exciting subject for a post in AGES! I absolutely love his work, for those of you that are interested I seriously recommend checking out this guy's website

    http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~sdh9b/mckean

I thought I'd repost it, as loads of people probably just skipped past it.

His graphic novels 'Violent Cases' 'Signal to Noise ' and 'Mr Punch' with Neil Gaiman are incredible. It's dificult to describe the effect that reading these books has . I would say that they created a whole new art form, sort of a mix between poetry, prose, painting, drawing and photography that creates a medium for telling a story that HAS to be experienced to be understood.

He has done loads of other work, but I would say start with these three and you'll thank me.

    Bye,

For God's sake, stop bashing KISS! All of you that say that you grew up on 80's metal (incl. myself), you should know better! At least 3/4, maybe more, of those acts list KISS as an influence. AND, who gives a shit about the make- up! I never did. Remember the old saying "It's the MUSIC stupid!" (and I'm not knocking any fellow jammers--you're entitled to your own opinion). So what if Derek played with them on the "Revenge" tour. It was a gig, and it paid the bills! Remember, the coolest ones that have ever been in KISS are the ones without a shitty attitude (trust me on this one, kids; I've met them several times over!). The coolest ones are Ace, Eric S., and Bruce. They're the ones that have class, and so doesn't Derek. He is as cool as shit! Remember- DS & ES own a house together. So, don't jump the gun too quick. At least when you meet these guys, it's a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" deal, and not like GS or PS (even though PS is the greatest vocalist of all time!).

I apologize about the NDTC, but I've been a KISS fan for 20 years. Speaking of which, are there any jammers who are die-hard KISS fans as well? The reason that I ask is that Ace performed at the NAMM JAM (I believe that date was 1/31), both with Slash, and by himself; and I am looking for a tape of it. He jammed on some old blues tunes with Slash. He also played "Rip It Out", "Cold Gin", "Strange Ways" (w/ ES on vocals), and "Parasite".

As a footnote, I've met Mike a couple of times, and both times he's worn a KISS shirt, so don't be too quick to judge.

BTW, my faves on LTE are "Paradigm Shift", and "Freedom of Speech"

Once again, I apologize for the NDTC.
