Well, I know that when I was working at Tower (and SoundScan was in
place at the time), Billboard went on the number of albums that were
sold by the record company, NOT by the number of albums that were sold
by the store. This is why albums can go Gold, or even Platinum, before
they see the light of day.

Key changes, chord voicings, the drumming (TOTALLY jazz
influenced) the bass (This is Sean Malone... the dude reharms Giant
Steps on his solo album... just assume he knows what he's doing if
you don't know the tune), the attention to dynamics, and last but not
least, the soloing taken straight from Allan Holdsworth's bag o'
tricks. These guys are NOT JAZZ. But they are clearly jazz
    influenced.

I don't know about that. There are certain tonal and technical
characteristics that define jazz. I don't think you can call a group
"Jazz" if they only satisfy some of the criteria. That's why I
    wouldn't call Cynic jazz.

    > guitar, etc. Jazz is looser. Jazz includes everything from Duke and

When you ask Pat Metheny what his music is, he will pause for a
second before he calls it jazz. That's because it's not jazz in any
traditional sense... they write new sounding music, but approach it
in the way they've been trained... as seasoned jazz players. Metheny
might not even be called jazz if he hadn't already released albums
with standards amd typical jazz elements. Return to Forever is
fusion. Kenny G is easy listening. Neither of those two are really
full on jazz... but it's easier to identify them that way than to say
"Return to Forever is a fusion band with influences from latin music
and rock music, showcasing extreme technical ability" (unless you're
    writing a review).
DMB is not jazz. They are pop. I wouldn't doubt that they have
some jazz influences, but certainly no more than their pop
influences. They may have some really tight drumming, and there may
be scat singing, but these things did not originate in jazz, and they
don't make DMB jazz now. He's got some of the elements in his
music... some of the songs emphasize the 2 and the 4 instead of 1 and
3, and they are more complex than the average pop band of the day,
but I don't think they're more complex or more jazzy than The Police,
and I don't know ANYONE who would call The Police "jazz".

    > The drumming? Eh....it's really more of a fusion-y type of drumming,

Scatting and improv are parts of just about every kind of music,
right down to country, rap, and R&B. I have shred songs with
Scatting, folk songs with scatting... I even have a Jeff Watson
tune with Sammy Hagar scatting on it.
Long songs aren't necessarily jazz songs. In fact, early jazz tunes
    are usually very short.

    > think it's notable that What Would You Say doesn't appear on that album.

    > and listen to the sax player's
    > soloing....carrying on Coltrane's torch. Pure dissonance. Hardly the
    > stuff of Kenny G.

No. No you don't. This is like when my English teacher asked me
for the names of some musicians who died because of their art and I
named Coltrane, and he said "What about Kurt Cobain?" I can't stand
seeing that kind of comparison. Cobain is not worth the spittle in
Coltrane's sax. The sax player in DMB is NOT carrying on Coltrane's
ANYTHING. You're doing the equivalent of saying (if Petrucci died)
Stone Gossard is carrying on Petrucci's torch. It's bad, man. Real
    bad. :)

Someone asked about what Yngwie album's would be good to buy:

I would recommend "Yngwie Malmsteem's Rising Force" and "Trilogy." Rising
Force has some sunning intrumentals on it...like "Black Star" and "Far
Beyond the Sun," while Trilogy boasts more vocals and some real classics
like "Queen In Love," "You Don't Remember..." and "Liar."

    Hope this helps.

I like the rest of your post, but I had to point out that this isn't
accurate. The label 'heavy metal' didn't exist when Zeppelin came out.
People (ignorant people) started calling them that later on. Sabbath is
usually considered the 'first' metal band (if you can even call anyone the
    first).

I got the new Van Halen cd Saturday. It's not bad and it's not great.

I also bought Bozzio Levins and Stephens disc. This one is pretty
interesting. What amazes me was Best Buy had literally 50 copies of this
disc. Is it selling that well? Of course Best Buy did not have LTE nor
did they have any other magna carta discs. In fact the Bozzio, Levins,
Stephens disc is the only magna carta cd I have ever seen at Best Buy.

As for Spock's Beard being on Metal Blade, it doesn't matter. Not all
bands on Metal Blade are metal. The Goo Goo Dolls used to be on it.

As for all this crap about Titanic, you can't give an opinion of a movie

Hey, what's up, 'jamrz?? Three questions:

    1. Jazz: I haven't really Taken the Time to explore much jazz yet, but I like some of the things I've heard. Could someone recommend a good couple of artists/albums to start off with, having DT as an influence? An example of the *type* of stuff I'd be into would be JP's "Example 13" sample from Rock Discipline . . :) I'm pretty open-minded - I just want to start off with something instrumental (not crazy about jazzy vox) and atmospheric. What are some *essentials*, especially for a guitarist??

    2. My next guitar: I'm considering forking over the big $$ for a JPM. Since I've heard that this guitar is *based* on the RG series, I'd like to know basically what would make the JPM worth spending the extra $500+ for. I like the pick-up configuration idea, and I know the neck is supposed to not be as thick, and the paint-job's cool . . . but if I bought an RG570, and possibly added other pick-ups (Air Zone, Evolution) to it in the future, would that be more worth it?

    3. Research paper on DT: That's right, I'm seriously considering doing my 4th quarter research paper on OFB. If anyone has any suggestions on what I might include, keeping in mind that it's a 5-7 page paper for a high school senior, I'd appreciate your sharing them with me.

E-mail privately if you so desire. Sorry for yet *another* long post, and hope this elicits at least *some* responses . . .

    Carpe Diem, Brian

    Ahoy,

A friend of mine has a friend whose b-day is coming up soon. I've decided that mass-scale confusion is in order - so I need everyone to give this girl a big happy email birthday greeting on April 3rd. Name and age are of no importance... just be creative. Thanks! Her address is: Beffy45@aol.com .

    Hi there -

Milan 1993, as far as I know, is a replica of "Lost In the Sky". And yes, it is an absolutely KILLER boot... it's my personal fave of the many boot CD's I own.

As far as the "Angel and the Gambler", yes, this song sucks moose dick!!! It's horrible! However, fear not.... the rest of the CD is pretty damn good. I also had been told that the new album was awesome, and I found Maiden's 2-part import CD single for AATG in the store, so I picked it up. Holy crap, was I disappointed!! Then, I got really scared, but I bought the album just because I've been a lifelong fan. I was very pleased to find out that the rest of the album rocks. Not "classic" like all of the stuff from Killers through Somewhere In Time, but I like it better than the X-Factor.

Anywho... that's it. Dinner's waiting, then it's hoops tonight. Go UTES!!!! :-)

    Laterz..... Matt T.
