I heard DiMeola was great, so i picked up a CD of his at random -
Esplendido Hotel - and really liked it. Then I heard rave reviews about
Elegant Gypsy and everyone said that it was 'the' DiMeola cd, so i got
that, and it wasn't bad, but i didn't really like it as much as Esplendido
Hotel. Dunno why. But then, I listen to punk, so what do I know?

I disagree. I know that, for me at least, it's much easier to identify with a different type of music when the instrumentation is similar. Mike Stern even does quite a bit of distorted soloing and he cites as many rock players among his influences as jazz players. It's easier to connect to than a horn player playing the same notes.
> Stern is an > amazing technical player, and has great phrasing, but this album in > particular (which I love) is going to be a nightmare to follow if > you're not familiar with the originals of the covers he plays, or > can't find the implied underlying chord progression.
Following all the changes isn't something that's necessary to enjoy jazz music. It certainly helps however to know the changes if you're listening because you want to learn how to PLAY the music. But to truly appreciate the masters and to understand the music you would certainly need to start simple. However, it's not necessary to understand everything that's going on harmonically to just enjoy LISTENING to the music. The cool thing about playing jazz is the changes allow you to create interesting lines based on the direction that the tunes tonal center takes you. > See, this is the thing... there's a risk of people running out and > buying all the fusion stuff (Tribal Tech, TJ Kirk, Mahavishnu > Orchestra, etc which is great, and amazing, musically) and thinking > they're doing something for their jazz playing. "Standard Repetoire") and some early > recordings so you can see where the players have progressed, and > where they started from.
I agree, but I still see some fault with your logic. Jazz has just as many subgenres as any other type of music. Fusion is just one of those. You claim you have to start at the basics. But where is that? The bop of the 50's and 60's is probably no closer to the 3 minute big band pieces that Duke Ellington was doing in the 20's than Fusion is to bop. Jazz can even transcend the artist. Miles Davis, who's been at the head of most major jazz revolutions has done everything from traditional Charlie Parker bop to avante garde acid jazz to Bitches Brew, which was crazy fusion. Just because you buy his Kind of Blue doesn't mean you'll get Pangea.
Familiarizing yourself with a whole new genre takes time and you have to start somewhere. I think you need to start whatever you find yourself enjoying most. Somebody might buy some of those early recordings from the beginning of the century but find them too far removed from their current listening tastes. Whereas a rocker who buys a fusion record could find something to connect to and THEN see the jazz side of the music and get more into the traditional stuff at that point.
> Learning solos and melodies from > DiMeola and McLaughlin is not a whole lot more useful to you than > learning solos and melodies from Yngwie or Petrucci... > awesome and valuable technical workouts, and they may help you learn > how to move around the fretboard pretty quickly, but you're not going > to have a prayer when it comes down to playing standards.
"Useful"? Learning any artists music is as useful as you make it to be. I'm not too familiar with DiMeola, but I know McLaughlin has played over and written some pretty wacked out changes in his years. Also, many standards have fairly simple progressions....

I always thought the term "Heavy Metal" came from the Steppenwolf song "Born to be Wild." There's the line that says "heavy metal thunder". Of course that was refering to a motorcycle. Who knows?

I understand (and agree with) your desire to do something different, but the fact is you *haven't* offered the entire world the opportunity to see you do a headlining show. Specifically, the FII tour never came within several hundred miles of Texas. And those of us that are stuck here will feel a bit deprived if we only get to see a one-hour opening set instead of a two-hour headlining set (which the rest of the country has already seen).
Of course, you could fix this by including Texas in your May shows... :)

Hey dude, Don't sweat it!!!!! I mean no harm, I just want our side of the coin heard! Believe me, I prefer to be playing OUR full show to OUR audience, but we need to continue to develop our career in order to grow. (and most importantly for me - NOT at the expense of our real fan base... which I don't think we're doing in this case...)
Anyways, I'm always friends with our fans, so don't take it personally.....in fact... if I look hard enough in my archieves, I bet I can find a copy of that Jaxx show.. : )

Okay, there's no Dream Theater content here, but I just wanted to say that Dokken isn't grunge. I think that what he was saying (sorry, I don't remember the name) is that since Kelly Gray produced the latest Dokken album he was apt to lead Queensryche in the same direction (if it was indeed true that he was the new guitarist).
Anyway, if you listened to 'Shadowlife' is was very admittedly non-Dokken. I like the album, but it's really not their best effort. I hear their new one will be more like 'Tooth And Nail'.
Okay, I'm done now. have a good one.

I dont think is all about money, I think is music evolution, now the music is louder and harder than it used to be, now the so called hard rock is called alternative, sometimes pop...the heavy metal that used to exist in the 80 is the hard rock of the 90's...Ive never been a metallica fan but I guess that's what happened to them...anyway everything evolutionates. --- Alan Estrada Adler ICQ #9267174 Personal Page: http://www.geocities.com/collegepark/2025 Shredder's Lair: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/7842/ "You've got your whole life to write your first album, and six months to do your next." Okay hold it a minute, you've never heard The Sax player for DMB and yet you in your omniscient wisdom have come to the conclusion that he is no where near as good as Coltrane. That would be the equivalent of me making the statement that I have never heard Steve Morse but I can guarantee that he isn't as good as Petrucci. Now I have heard the Sax player for DMB and, yes he is no Coltrane, but I can make that statement as I am educated as the the playing of both artists. It is not wise to make statements like the one above without checking the whole story out. Next time you want to cut on something make sure you know what it is you are talking about. Sorry that just annoys the shit out of me when people make general statements like that.
For Jazz why don't you check out some Django Reinhart. I would consider that to be pretty pure jazz.
Flexable came out in 1983, ya see Vai has been around as long as the yngster. Speaking of Vai there is a good interview with him, and you can link to it by going to his site www.vai.com. In reading the interview I found out that Prince covered Steve's song Tender Surrender, ain't that a trip. Also Vai will be playing on Greg Bissonette's solo album on Shrapnel. Gilbert and some others from the eighties hall of fame will also be guesting.

No matter how many connections I may have, which = believe=20 it or not, is quite a bit, I still find/found it hard to get decent = tickets to=20 any large venue. Something on the medium size of things, its a = piece of=20 cake.. But its too much of a pain. Yes I would see DT even = if my=20 seats/standing room sucked, but, there would be no possible way that it = could=20 compare to the Dec. 14th show at the TLA. (Im still=20 hyperventiliating!!!) Well... I've done my ticketmaster = bashing for=20 the day. I'm done now.

Scott Sturdivant

<A=20 href=3D"mailto:ckssrs@axiomet.com">ckssrs@axiomet.com

*flame me, = c'mon!*
