oh yeah, i remember now: she played like 3 or 5 seconds of The Flight of the Bumblebee, but i dont know why she didnt play it complete. Maybe she was ashamed at that time of being a tapper as you said. She dropped many jaws (if not all) when she was playing with her backing tracks though.

I haven't heard his web page samples - but having been with Roy up close and personal for one year of my life - I can say he is no tapping god. Jennifer Batten eats shit like him for breakfast (Happy Gilmore)

I like the Momentum even more. The african rythms might start to bite after a while, but guitar playing is still tops! Another glitch I think about this CD is that the guitar is mixed a bit to quietly, but I guess that`s personal prefference. U`ll love Momentum!

You have had a interesting group of band experiences. You're on crack if you think that's normal. How do you explain master guitarists who have impossible time, like DiMeola (who is on the level with any drummer rhythmically.)? Shouldn't he be a bassist? How do you explain bassists who have shit time? How do you explain the fact that I have bass students who chose bass because it's "the cool instrument" in their minds? You let everything fall to chance. People with the drive to master something, do not make such decisions on whims or because of financial obstacles. My bassist friends would never put down the bass to join a band. My guitarist friends are the same way.

i dunno about that. most of the bands i've been in or known had actively-writing lead guitarists (i dunno about big name bands cuz i don't know them, so i really dunno who writes what, 'cept for DT). i'm the lead guitarist in my band and i write probably 85% of our music. i know, you said 'most', but still. Oh, sorry, that comma should be inside the apostrophes. :)
On another note, damn, i wish my band could cover Al DiMeola's 'Alien Chase on Arabian Desert.' damn. :) Moo.

Mick Karn's BESTIAL CLUSTER is Jansen, Barbieri, and Karn, all formerly of Japan, the group that gave us David Sylvian, who we've all heard of of course, and David Torn, who we've been hearing about a lot lately in relation to the BLUE tour. It is also a brilliant album.
Karn's bass playing is complicated yet hypnotically repetitive. Jansen's drumming makes even simple 4/4 pop songs sound complex, by changing the accents on the beats every measure or so (like the beginning of "The Mirror" but more of it). Torn is subtle and tasteful on this album, rather than noisy and experimental like usual--it works, and shows Torn is a versatile guitarist. Barbieri's keys are subtle and ambient.
All this is rounded out by a host of session musicians. Karn's music tends to be relaxed, but BESTIAL CLUSTER has an edge. And a dissonance. The album is quite unique.
A 3meg sample from the album, "Saday, Maday," which I might describe as 21st century world music, can be found at the address above. It is a 44.1k mp3, but mono, because otherwise I could not fit it in my disk quota. It still sounds good, if only as an introduction to the album. It is zipped to prevent cooking by lame browsers like Netscape (I like Netscape, now, but this should have been fixed by now).

We all know who writes the music for Van Halen, and it sure ain't EVH. Blackmore never wrote for Deep Purple. And the late great Randy Rhoads? He didn't write much of Ozzy's stuff either. I guess Petrucci's not doing much writing for oh-eff-bee, either. In Aerosmith, the rhythm section does most of the writing, not Joe Perry. Remember Extreme? Nuno Bettencourt didn't write much either. Same thing with Jimmy Page; he wasn't a prolific music writer. Nor was Brian May. Hell, none of these guitar players wrote anywhere near as much as the others in their bands, right?

What are you talking about?! Megadeth sucks hardcore! Cryptic Writings or whatever the new one is called is so regressive! I felt like I was back in 1985 when my friend put it one my stereo (the suck part of '85, mind you).
