I heard DT for the first time in highschool while cutting
some classes. My best friend just discovered them and wanted
me to hear I&W. We were both heavily into shred guitar players
at the time (still are partly). He handed over the headphones
of the diskman and forwarded to the beginning of Under A
Glass Moon solo. So the first thing I heard were what I thought
extremely weird time signatures and sincopes (something I wasn`t
in at all) and I thougth to myself "man this is fucked up, this
guy is losing it" but then Petrucci went off and I was hooked
immediately. Went to the CD store the next day and bought just
about anything with Dream Theater on it.
And the rest is history... ;)
How many times did u guys hear them live and where/why
did u like the show most?

dude, you're forgetting that rhythm guitar in rock music (for the most part) is only considered 1 voice. Fifths, fourths, and octaves only add strength to that one voice. This is not really like a 4-part choral, and you also have to take into account that most rock music has distorted guitar timbre.

ahhh... it all started on AOL :} I met a guy from Minnesota, of all places (no offence midwest jammers) and he and i got to talking music and so he kindly sent me a bunch of tapes. Images and words and some misc stuff on one tape, Awake, the song ACOS and more misc stuff on another and type o negative on yet another. i kind liked TON but dream theater rocked. being i was poor :} the first DT cd i ever bought of theirs was FII. Then my ex got me awake, and i recently bought acos and wdadu from cdnow. I must add that if it hadnt been for the Jam i never would have gotten into Savatage or queensryche or heard about LTE. So thanks guys ::sniff sniff:: youre such an insperation for other mailing lists :}

I'm kinda disappointed in you, Mads. All your fascination with outstanding guitar players, and you don't own any White Lion albums? Laugh if you want, folks, but Vito Bratta was an outstanding musician. The solo I saw him play on one of WL's tours is still stuck in my mind as one of the best I've seen. They're also one of the few bands who've done a remake of a song that was, IMHO, better than the original (yes, I mean "Radar Love").
While I'm on the topic, does anybody know what Vito's up to these days? Richie?

I think you should take Al's advice and split the cab(s) with your friends. When you total the subway for three or four people the cab won't be much more expensive. The cab is not a risk the subway is more risk (especially for getting lost). Just hop in the cab, like you do it everyday and say, "15th and Irving please." If you sound confident you won't get taken for a ride.

Ytse meeting:
A couple of friends of mine are planning to meet at a place called Swift's on 4th between Third and Lafayette. IP is on 15th and Irving; which is directly north of Swift's. Max 20 min walk, 5 min cab ride. There are places closer to IP but the beer sucks! MUST HAVE GOOD BEER!
That's my proposal for those interested in gathering before the show. If anyone has any other suggestions please post it or reply to me.

That article friggin infuriates me!!!! How can Lars go and shit talk progressive music. A majority of the people who like progressive music and in our case Dream Theater, are musicians themselves and/or are people who are moved emotionally by understanding what pure unconditional talent goes into being able to play such a style of music, with such precision.
My point is, when I first gave "And Justice For All" a GOOD listen years ago, I was impressed. Unfortunately, that song was purely experimental for them. Lars says that progressive is weird ass and challenging, and that the band needed to take a sharp turn. Sure, becuase if their fans started to like that sort of sound, there would be a need to produce more "10 minute" songs like that. Which is something the band clearly couldn't do then, and can't do now. It is a matter of ability, not taste. One again, another reason why I can't get enough of Dream Theater.

My personal oppinion is that music theory IS interesting.. but MAY get in the way of true art... It may polute the true emotion running out of the musicians/artists head. Many of my favourite artists were those who knew no musical theory, but had feelings and emotions to convey, and did that. Yes, knowing HOW to play an instrument is a DEFINITE bonus since it will make life easier on the artist. One of my favourite examples is listening to David Gilmour guitar solos.. I dont hear theory.. i FEEL his emotions directly communicating through his guitar. Nothing technical, nothing intricate. There is something magical about that.
Also, if everyone stck to theory.. the realm of music would stagnate. It is those with the new sounds that survive and expand musical boundaries. And besides.. all art should exist. If someone wants to communicate - there is nothing wrong with it. If no one listens.. then i guess.. welll. no one listens :). I think the only thing in the music industry which is bullshit.. which deserves to be bashed - which is evil and WRONG and SUCKS, is the INDUSTRY itself! All the bastard critics shoving their ideas down our throats, all the music stations and record lables who force feed us what they feel should be the popular music.. they are the ones who SUCK.. not the musicians themselves.
Though.. I really dont enhjoy most of today's music... I bless the jam for introducing me to loads fo music that I do enjoy :)

I have no opinions on the opening band since I missed their entire set.
Daytona's sucks. The sound only went out once, which was good for Daytona's. This place is just way too claustrophobic. The ceilings are way too low. The stage was so small. Even though the place sucked DT still rocked and had a great time.
What is wrong with you people? Yesterday was Labrie's birthday and there were no Happy Birthday posts. Portnoy did lead the crowd in a Happy Birthday.
