I'm compiling some VideoCDs of good videos for general distribution
(you all know the drill). It will be playable on all PCs that have
CD-ROM, sound, and Win95 or whatever, plus on 5XXX-serial Playstations
and most DVD players (though it is NOT a DVD).
Anyway I need to make sure I (a) don't cross-over any real releases,
and (b) get the last few videos I need for it.
If you have excellent (preferably taped directly from TV) NTSC copies
of any of this stuff, I'd be extremely grateful if I could maybe send
some CDR material your way in trade for your master tape (which I can
even copy directly to my hard drive and send back to you):
Rush: Promise, Half the World, Driven
Dream Theater: Silent Man non-PAL-converted, Hollow Years
Tori Amos: God USA, God UK, Talula, Hey Jupiter, Spark
Queensryche: Disconnected, Sign of the Times, any other HITNF vids
Live: Lakini's Juice and any other SS-era videos (I have all priors)
Galactic Cowboys: I'm Not Amused, Fear Not, Evil Twin
Fates: Anything other than Monument, which I already have
BTW, the new Tori Amos album is pretty good... seems an improvement
over BFP but I don't really know that it measures up to the early stuff.
The addition of a "band" sure helps. Jewel emulated Tori... now Tori is
emulating Jewel. It's a vicious cycle, you see.
And it sounds like yet again Bafu has sent a DT show straight to hell
just by his very presence. :) Keep it up, man!!
Why do all the good books come out in LATE 1998??? Man, I've been
waiting forever for this shit it seems like. Rivan Codex (Eddings) and
The Path of Daggers (Robert Jordan) are on cue for this fall. And they'd
better as hell not be late.

In 1992 I heard Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime" for the first time. I listened to it repeatedly, constantly - I loved it and thought it was the best thing since whatever.
For some reason I stopped listening to it (not sure why). Then, in March of 1996, I started thinking about Queensryche again after seeing them mentioned in the Iron Maiden newsgroup. "Hey, I liked them once," I thought. A few days later, I bought "Operation: Mindcrime" again.
The next day, I bought "Empire", which I at first hated, and during the remainder of the month I bought the rest of their albums. During this time, I started reading the Queensryche newsgroup and noticed that every second thread mentioned a band called Dream Theater, who I had never heard of.
Seeing that most of the threads consisted of QR vs DT flame wars, I figured that DT would sound a lot like Queensryche and decided to check them out. I listened to some of "Live at the Marquee" and wasn't impressed, to say the least. It went back on the shelf.
Something about them still bothered me, however, and at the end of the week I saw a copy of "A Change of Seasons". I noticed that they did a cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody", still the greatest song of all time, and decided that I'd buy it.
Then I bought the Live in Tokyo video, then I&W, then Awake, then WDADU (the last two I took an immediate disliking to, but it wasn't long before I loved them).
I've been a DT fan for approximately 2 years. Because I decided to buy that Queensryche cd, I've discovered bands (through the Jam or IRC) such as Dream Theater, Rush, Savatage, Yes, Shadow Gallery, I Mother Earth, Opeth, Jethro Tull, Enchant, Angra, King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Stratovarius... the list continues. I've bought approx. 300 cds in the last two years - I don't know if that's really a lot compared to you lot, but it's more than I expected to buy.
Anyway, that's about it.

Self-confidence or just empty bragging?
There was someone asking if there were any young jammers here - I am 16 = (17 in a few months). Just so ya' know. I am, as most of the guys on = this list (?), a musician (bass guitar player (I have a Fender! - please = be jealous)). I have no direct skill to show off with, but I've only = been a serious player for a couple of years. I know I will get better. = No new Lee, Myung or Hamm (my gods), 'cause I don't have their mind for = the music... at least not yet. Oh, and I've been into DT for... let's say... half a year, but I truly = love 'em!
And about the theory discussion:
I would never have been as good as I am today if it weren't for the = musical theory. I would have played every song in AC/DC-style (ya' = know... playing eighth notes B for 40 measures (=3D "Thunderstruck")). = Theory is important, but not everything!

Well, how i got into DT was believe it or not... from eMpTyV... yes, i was flipping the channels one day, and i saw the heart from the PMU video, and i was like.. "YES A TESTAMENT VIDEO!!!!" and i was like, hmm i don't know if this is testament or not, but it was during the guitar solo, and it kicked ass so i thought it was alex, but then i heard the chorus and i was like, no, maybe its not testament, but anyway, i waited for the name, and it said Dream Theater.. and i was like "who?? you mean testament wannabes" i talked to my rhythm guitarist at the time the next day about testament, and i told him i saw a testament wannabe on mtv the other day called dream something (keep in mind, i only saw the last half of the video, i came to this conclusion cause of the heart), and he was like dream theater?? i was like yea, thats it, he said you gotta hear them man, they blow testament away, he brought in the tape, put on metropolis, and the rest is history.

I was watching Japanese MTV (I lived in Tokyo at the time) and saw the video for PMU. The video was cool but all the transitions sucked. I said to myself "this song is so broken up", turned off the tube and went and made myself lunch. I was then watching headbangers ball (cuz japanese MTV loved the ball and so I could actually watch a show on metal :) and low and behind DT was on and I gave a listen and watch to TTT and I again said "these transitions suck" All my 8th grade friends who were these death metal listener types were talking about the interview and the video and they basically said DT was crap. All arrows pointed to me not liking DT. Then that summer, I came back to the US to visit and was savoring the local mall. I went into a CD store and saw I&W sitting there on the counter and just stared at it. This was a band I really didn't like but something wasa telling me to pick up this CD. I just grabbed it and bought it without a thought. By the end of the day, it had become my favorite CD of all time and still to this day 6 years later, it still is. I wonder what it was that forced me to buy this CD of a band I hated. Maybe I was subconciously able to see through the crappy edits done on PMU and TTT to what the band had originally envisioned. Maybe MP has some sort of psychic power that eminates from the I&W CD case. Maybe I just knew in my heart of hearts that this band would change my outlook on music and ultimately life with just 55 minutes worth of music. Whatever it was, I am truly thankful. - Layne

Yes, but if every lesson were taught that way, it would be hard to learn anything. Kind of like putting IMHO in front of every sentence of every ytsejam post. After a while you can't actually see the point being made. Being a good student means integrating the knowledge taught into one's own experience and goals, not taking every piece of knowledge as some sort of holistic gospel. It's not up to the teacher to say "In western Music..." at the beginning of every theory lesson. It's up to the student to know this going into the lesson and keep it in mind.
And, there's enough to know in Western Music theory to fill a person's lifetime. Every teacher shoudn't be required to know and present alternate systems. Though, it would be nice for one teacher at an institution to know it and to teach it to those who are interested. Maybe such a teacher exists where you've studied. I only studied basic theory for fun at UCSC, but there are plenty of "world music" type classes here I could have taken if I had the time and inclination. Heck, there's even a student Gamelan performance class.

it had a bunch of cool 3D DT/majesty symbol bitmaps. some were arctic, some were really colorful, i think one was the same as the cover for WDATodayU...

Harris, you mean. Not in any way - Steve, Nicko, Jannick and Dave are = masters of their instruments, Blaze is in no way a master of his task. = Not even close. I love Iron Maiden, at least pre-"X Factor". Their quality has been = worse among the years. When Dickinson left, something radical must have = happened. They are just so pathetic - at least Blaze is. Can you believe = that they performed PLAYBACK in a Swedish TV show, "S=F6ndags=F6ppet" - = and Janick wasn't even on stage!
