To Dave Hatlee, it would appear there's more than you thought! And some of
us have been contributing to the 'Jam for quite a while now. I'm also a
teenager but in a few months I won't be classed as that anymore because
I'll be reaching the ripe ol' age of 20!!!!!!!
Anyway, "Long Live Rock n' Roll" as Rainbow once warbled, and more
    importantly, long live Prog!

A review from my friend ...

Dan, thought you may appreciate a brief note re: the concert. Playlist is
below, clearly some changes since we say them in December. The show was great,
the band was tight and the crowd well behaved. I found LaBrie to be far more
active on stage this time (maybe he got some good advice). The acoustics
weren't the greatest and they lost their mic during BMS, but the crowd pitched
in and delivered for James. They opened with Change of Seasons followed by
Just Let Me Breathe and then into Take the Time. They closed Take the Time by
picking up with the end of 'Free Bird' and then into Zeppelin's Moby Dick....I
must say that first 45 minutes was some of the best rock I've seen/enjoyed.
    The warm-up band was a group named Full of the Mouth and they weren't bad;
world's better than the warm-up band at the Ball Room.

Their tour schedule doesn't show anything in the Southeast at this point...any
chance of coming north again to the catch the guys ? Looks like it will be
around 8/12. Any new progressive rock candidates to pursue ? Stay the course
    !

I hardly think "Accident of Birth" qualifies as a "crappy self - produced
CD." I consider it to be one of the best metal releases of last year - far
surpassing anything Maiden has done since "Seventh Son..."

I have seen several definitions of "art" and the one I like the most is:

a form of communicatin that has become outdated or unneccesary.

Take your flat media(oil on canvas, chalk on sidewalk, coal on side of
cave, etc). At one point this was a way to record events and images. As
new ways of doing this were invented, such as photography, the old ways
became outmoded and as such are used as artistic tools. "But", you say,
"photography is often art too, and isn't out of date yet. How do you
    explain that, jerky"?

well yes it is not outdated, but there are only so many pictures you can
take of a particular field. Then it's been recorded. You don't need any
more; the rest are pretty much art. Cool, huh?

Now, I'm pretty sure people used to yodel and shit before anyone thought of
writing it down. I believe that was the purpose of the bard, to
communicate events through rhyme and song. And now that we have the
written word, rhyming and singing(two excellent associative memory devices)
are obsolete, which is why bards, while still around, never say anything
and are usually called "mimes" and have changed their vocation from
    "informative entertainer" to "shotgun target".

And of course, singing and song are still around, as an outmoded useless
    form of communication, hence, art.

Now then. I just saw a mime go by. gotta go! *ka-chung*

It's a cool story out of Suffern, NY (also the home of Beartracks Recording Studio). I close friend and neighbor of mine was a drummer in several heavy metal/fusion bands in the '80's. One of the bands he played in was called Asian Orange (as I recall). This guy used to play at the same gigs in upstate NY with Dream Theater during the late '80's.
I never found out about this connection until I was a freshman in college in '92. Me and one of my roomates were heavy Rush fans, and we heard the Connecticut rock stations (WNHU) playing DT's "Take the Time" like mad. I go to a Strawberries music store, and their playing I&W in the store. I bought it, and was floored by the Guitar, Drums, and Keyboard skills. I never heard anything like it, and I still remember how the hair on the the back of my neck was friggin standing straight up the whole length o
f the CD. I was HOOKED!!!!
Okay, so I'm back home, and I tell my friend the drummer about the Dream Theater experience, And he tells me all about how he knew DT really well and the whole thing (as mentioned above). To this day I have one of JP's picks (my buddy gave me) that he played with that night at Shennaniginns a while back. Anyway, there's a lot more to this story that I could get into, but lets just say that it involves the cool all chick metal band Meanstreak!

Hi I was coming to work this morning and listening to FII. As TAMP started I remembered reading an article about OFB in Guitarist magazine where JP said that the lyrics were about the death of his father. The lyrics really hit home all of a sudden. I have seen people die of cancer (although this may not be what Mr. Petrucci senior died of) and the scene the lyrics pictured was very moving and also very familiar. I know this song has not been talked about in favourable terms recently (the gradings), but for me it has a special meaning. A non-DT fan who I gave a tape to with this song on really liked it.

Back in 1992, I found out that DT was going to play Club 101 in El Paso two days before Thanksgiving. I had heard that they were similar to Rush, but had never heard any of their material. Me and several of my friends (who also had never heard them but were Rush junkies as well) went to the show. Well...you can imagine what it was like. We were completely blown away. 3 days later, we headed up for a little getaway (mass consumption) in Ruidoso, and my friend whiped out the I&W album he had just bought. The album stayed in the CD player all weekend, and I still remember studying for finals that year with nothing but DT playing in my headphones all week! Ahhhh, the memories. Now it's just work work work.

Second, in front of the stereo speakers I have a microphone that >will record the "5150" album in its entirety as it is on the disc.

That's a very clever post, but you really didn't address the point I was trying to make. I said nothing about success or sales in my post. I was simply referring to the fact that on a fundamental level, jazz and rap artists are doing the same thing.

Let me ask you a few other things. If a rapper brought in his own band to play an EXACT cover of the song, and then he rapped over it (rather than using samples), would that be more acceptable? If not, how is that different from a jazz artist playing a "standard" arrangement? And exactly how much of a "sample" has to be used for it to become a ripoff? DT puts TV and movie "samples" in their songs, and I assume you don't have a problem with that. Why not? _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________________ E-mail: (psull)-(at)-(ici)-(dot)-(net) IRC: DDictator WWW: http://www.just-like.nu/ ______________________________________________________________

    I'm sick of club gigs.

first of all, that Daytona's show was a great concert. Second of all, Daytona's SUCKS. security ineffective. 2 or 3 separate WARNINGS for the same guy? WTF? Throw his ass out! I know Kez and Bafu were having problems with the same guy.

Trial of Tears is much better live than in the studio. The solos just seem a bit masturbatory on the CD. James kicks much ass on this tune. John Myung messed up. I mean, he hit a real clunker. It was just a half step sharp--just hit the wrong fret--but it was in a really exposed part. It was kinda funny. Check out the latest edition of Bass player. Pretty nice article on Myung in there.

I'm sick of club gigs. I want to go and watch a concert. I don't care if people have fun. I don't care if people jump around and get stupid. I start to care when said people show no regard for PERSONAL SPACE. I start to care when my friend <who is female and only 5'4"> starts getting knocked around by guys 3 times her size. It pisses me off when the guy who is all but LEANING on me to support his 300+ pounds of bulk yells at me to get my elbow out of his back. I don't care if you paid the same $22.50 I paid. If you're just too intoxicated to support your own weight then get the fuck out of the fray. If you're stone-cold sober and you still can't control your bodily spasms, then you either need some serious ritalin or a bullet to the skull.

I'm sick of club gigs in general, but when they're in Riviera Beach, MD <which I believe is even worse than MosEisley because not only is it stocked with scum and villainy but they're all stupid to boot> it's just about all I can take. That kind of behavior just wouldn't fly at a DT gig at Jaxx. You can say what you want about his exorbitant pricing, but Jaxx is a quality establishment <sort of>.

I can't believe that people are not only that inconsiderate of others, but are so self-righteous about their "right" to "enjoy the concert in whichever way they deem appropriate." After the gig, 300+ guy staggers back into my friend Stacey. I tell him to watch it for God's sake. He says, in broken, Pasadena-accented English, "Hey, man. You been on the edge all night. Just cool it man, it's over." On the edge? I'll tell you who's on the edge: HE was on the edge of collapsing and taking people down with him. Once someone is on the floor in a situation like that it's BAD. Someone is going to get hurt.

I don't want to ruin everyone's fun, but EVEN in a club situation people have an obligation to be mindful of what they are doing and how it effects other people. It SICKENS me how people do not take this into account. My leg is still stiff because it was holding up the weight of at LEAST two people next to me. <to the guy in the whit t-shirt who was next to me: my sincerest apologies for you getting sandwiched like that. I know you weren't part of the problem. I was just rying to keep 3-4 people from collapsing on top of me and my girlfriend.> I'm not a big guy. I don't want to pick a fight OR get sucked into one, but if someone goes too far <and I do NOT have a short fuse by any means> I am going to go down swinging. I'm glad to say that those who pissed me off at that gig are going to be sore a few days longer than I am.

I'm sick of club gigs. Take me to a nice theater or outdoor amphitheater where I can have an assigned space like 27A and have enough room to bang my head when the music moves me to do so without having to worry about my hair bothering the guy or girl behind me and I don't have to worry about getting crushed by hordes of poor souls who can't support several hundred pounds of drunken dead weight that have collapsed upon them. Is that a run-on sentence?

So, who's up for a road trip to Birch Hell this December? I LOVE DREAM THEATER!

Man, I almost busted a gut laughing at this. Thanks for the tale there Bafu.

I was toying with the idea of playing the YtseDrinking Game to pass the 13-hour drive to Philly from Atlanta with Paul Cashman, but discarded it when Paul reminded me I'd have to do some driving. Selfish bastard - he claims he can't do 13 hours of overnight driving by himself. I wanted to say that since I was donating the car, he should donate the driving, but didn't so as to avoid any pre-cooped-up-for-13-hour-drive-together discontent... Ugh... :)

If there's any organized pre-Philly-show gathering someone please email me. I've been talking to Chris from Shadow Gallery and he'll be there along with Brendt and the guys from Clockwork, but I haven't heard of any MiniPhillyYtseCon (yes, it's a word) as of yet. Someone please let me know. We'll be strangers in a strange land. At least I ain't sportin' the southern accent y'all...

On another note, I want to publicly thank Mike Portnoy for his amazing generosity to Paul "Not-Really-A-Selfish-Bastard" Cashman and myself. He knows what I mean...

I just realized that if we leave early enough on Sunday morning, I might actually get an hour of sleep before my 7:30am exam on Monday... Man, I can't believe my girlfriend says I should skip said 13 hour roadtrip just b/c of an exam... Pfft... I need to help her get her priorities in whack... :) Take care all, and I'll see some of you in Philadelphia! WHOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Lung infection... huh? couldnt have anything to do with the fact that the guy was a freakin' chain smoker could it? nah... sorry me and my imagination again, my bad!

I can think of a couple of possible health hazards to guitar playing: tinnitus from playing too loud and maybe a repetative movement disorder like carpal tunnel... and both of these can be avoided with a little knowledge and preventative precautions. For the life of me though i cant imagine getting a lung infection from the guitar...

.. maybe some sort of toxic guitar paint that seeps into the skin while your playing naked in front of the computer (if you do that kind of thing of course). The toxic seepage from the paint migrates through the pores of your soft bellydermis and straight to the lungs where it coats in a bizarre replication of the original guitar paintjob whether it be flat, gloss, swirly, ugly (most home-aids fit here) or cool. And though this makes for a nice "take home and frame" type of x-ray visit to the doctor especially if you forked over for a nice JPM but otherwise its unrecommended due to other health concerns, namely death.

You know how violinists get that little bruise up under the neck from where they rest their violin? I imagine that if you hold your guitar really tight against your body when you played all the time you might get a nice bruise right under your ribs... hmm... if anybody sees the upsides to this idea then mail me :)

    >Kevin Carmouche <khc@bellsouth.net> >I just have some >crazy beliefs, I guess that's what being raised by a poor, struggling, >professional jazz clarinetist does to you...haha...

this would make a nice little preamble to all future conversations:

"Hi I'm Kevin... I have some crazy beliefs....I guess that's what being raised by a poor, struggling professional jazz claninetist does to you... nice to meet you"

"ooohh..." understanding look.. inevitably disasterous and confrontational discussions avoided.

oh, and thanks for not skimming straight past to Bafu's next post like I would have! bruce bforst@busprod.com

Hey band! I am posting this message on the off-chance that one of you might see it before Saturday. I am a huge DT fan, and I will be trekking out to Philly from Cambridge, MA this weekend to see you perform at the Electric Factory. I'm a friend of Ed Roth's (is this name familiar?) and also an admirer of your co-conspirators in the prog rock world, FW. I would LOVE to meet you guys! I don't know how big your following is in PA, how big the venue is, or how realistic that would be. But, just in case, I will be the Asian chick wearing black slacks and a white tanktop and screaming Korean phrases at Myung. :)

Some impressions - (No, I don't do Nixon...)

Well, here's hoping for a Jaxx show later in the year. :)

Seriously, the sound was OK until the mains went out in BMS - the power amps must have overheated - and then it lost all definition at the lower volume, with the vox being buried. It was nice to hear the crowd singing

I like the Metropolis Medely. I also think EVERY DT show should open with ACOS I&II. They have no better opener - it just sets the mood perfectly.

TTT was nice - I didn't realize how much I missed it. I could have done without "Anna Lee", though.

I think several of my friends missed the joke with "Freebird." Sometimes people forget that the band likes to have fun, too.

The band wasn't too comfortable onstage, by the look of it. Having played on that stage, I can understand.

James should lose the 'stash - it ain't workin' :)

Bafu looks nothing like I would have guessed. Then again, does anyone?

Kezcom was, um, somewhat enamored with having met the band. :) BTW, I'll have the 'Tage ticket next week... Thanks for hooking me up, man. How long did you stay?

I wonder what pickups JP has in the 7 strings - it didn't seem to cut as well. Of course he was using a slightly different tone, as well...

To MP: If you play in the DC/Baltimore area again, make several of us happy - play "The Mirror" instead of "Lie."

I'd much rather go to Birch Hell than Daytona's, except for one thing - the bartenders. :) Hey, one of them was my regular Hammerjack's bartender...

Pat, Jason, Steve, Steve's woman (lost for hours?), Bafu, Kez. I later learned there were several other 'jammers there, but that's all I knew at the time - rather disappointing...

Oddly enough, I missed Madden. It just didn't seem complete without him there, complaining about something... :)

OK, I've rambled enough. Not as good as the Jaxx show (what is? They were awesome that night) but better than the Capital Ballroom.

Mike Division - with King Diamond, May 18. With Savatage, June 19th. With matches, we can start a fire...
