Okay, so I'm trying to catch up on my reading, so I'm thumbing through
The March 1998 issue of PC Computing magazine. I've reached an article
about internet hotspots, and right there on Page 301, I see a graphic
that is unmistakably the burning heart from the inside cover of Images
and Words. So, naturally, I surf over there. The page itself is
innocuous, it's called "The Pessimist's Guide To Love", but it does in
fact feature the graphic, which is called "dthrt.gif", both as a graphic
and tiled in the background.

me too. and i've never seen OFB - when they were in Tulsa 4+ yrs ago, i was managing a skating rink and couldn't get anyone to cover for me :(
and i've worked the small club circuit before - sux.
if only OFB would come here and play at the river front park. heh... they'd probably only draw about 2k people, but hey, that's better then a club of 300 and outside where they'd have no accoustics issues to deal with. just the humidity that makes you sweat pounds off while you pour beer in. *grin*

Hi everybody,
I am 16 years old, and I got into DT about 2 years ago. I got on the right track very quickly. The second CD I ever owned was Rush: Permenent Waves (my 1st CD was Queen: Greatest hits 1 in case anyone cares). I was hooked on Rush. I started looking over the internet for other bands that were similar to Rush. Of course I eventually picked up my first DT CD (I&W) and I was amazed. Now I have CDs from all sorts of crazy prog bands. I talk about them at school and people say "whaa??!?" They don't have any idea what they're missing! I have seen DT live once (at Palo Alto), and I am going to see them again at Maritime Hall (wahoo!). Also, I am now a drummer. : )

I need to know. Can someone describe irving plaza in comparison to the vanderbilt in plainview and toad's place in new haven? I really really really liked the vanderbilt because of the nice big stage. which is Irving Plaza closer to? and do they have security perched right on the stage like they did in new haven? stuff like that. you can private e-mail me, or not. It's relevant to the jam anyway.
new topic: I suspect that the song "New Millenium" will become immensly popular as the actual new millenium draws ever closer. This is a huge advertising point that's already being used in ads like the M+M ones. I think this particular song, and the chorus in particular, is really condusive to being part of an ad jingle for sporting goods or something. And I can just see it being played on new year's eve. stuff like that.
Of course I also think the intro to jlmb is good for an Army commercial. Play the intro and say out loud, "Do you want to be part of a team? Do you have what it takes to do something for your country? Find out! Be a part of the action! join the army today!" It just gels nicely. Cut to guy rapelling down cliff...
I will be quiet now. I know, because I'm going to ducktape a ballgag in my mouth and crazy-blue my hands to my armpits.

this is back in 1993 I think, I was still in high school and I used to go out with this girl I just met, we started dating and after some time he gave me this tape and told me "listen to this, I love this band, it's my fav band around" and I said ok, let's see what's she into, I got home put the tape and it was images and words, I think it started with pull me under (it was a recorded tape so i really dont know and I really dont remember) and I though "this girl doesnt look like a metalheat, did she gave me the worng tape?" I keep listening and I really hated I was thinking "rock was not meant to have keyboards" (stupid me), but then the first side ended and I said well, what the hell let's finish hearing it, then it was...metropolis, this was the first song I really got interested in, i thought that was pretty cool, then I heard take the time and that was it.... now Im happy I listened to the whole tape, my girlfriend never got into awake, but she loves falling into infinity and a change of seasons...I think she doesnt even know images and words is not their first album... what was cool also is that I lend her my Extreme albums and she really liked them too, so it was a mutual musical exchange that's my story

Reminds me of a few athletes that I've played with in various sports. I've seen guys who have tremendous talent and could go far if they just applied themselves, just not care. I would have killed for half the talent these guys had. It is sad to see Vito like this, but there isn't anything to be done about it, so move on.

This was the = fourth time I've seen DT (twice at the Birch Hill and once at Irving = Plaza) and they were nothing short of astonishing. In fact, this is = probably the best I've ever seen them. I'm not gonna get into a set list = here, primarily because I don't remember it. Sorry. I can say that = Ytsejam was incredible, they're still splitting up ACoS (it started and = ended the show) and they played Trial of Tears all the way through as = their finale. The encore was an extended version of Metropolis which I'm = thinkin' had a little piece or two of Metropolis 2, but of course, I = can't be sure. At any rate, there was a nice jam in there.
Highlights of Petrucci's solo were Flight of the Bumblebee = (UNBELIEVABLE) and a bit from Liquid Tension Experiment. Overall, a = completely kick-ass experience from start to finish. Even the Birch Hill = was cool. In the past it's been a firetrap, but this time, I swear there = was enough room to breakdance.=20

Cultural relativism is a moral position that is difficult to defend because of inconsistencies in communication, values, and it's counter-intuitive conclusions. There are moral implications... it's a moral system. Musical relativism is not, and doesn't suffer from the same problems. It think (and I am quite possibly wrong) that it is counter-intuitive NOT to support some form of musical relativism. Let me explain. We, representing an unfortunate minority of music fans between ages 14-40, (I know we extend outside of that range...) like Dream Theater. A significant majority, consisting of all ranges of intellects and educational backgrounds, within that age group, dislike Dream Theater. They can offer as many reasons why they find DT distasteful as we can offer for liking them. Would their majority not somehow represent a hierarchy, and if their decision as a group has some non-relativistic affect, would that not mean that we are wrong for liking DT? I don't see how anyone can tell anyone else that his or her tastes in art are wrong, poor, unfounded, uninformed, or anything else. It just doesn't make sense. Many rap fans hate metal as much as many of us like it. We won't allow that to establish that they're right and we're wrong, even if they vastly outnumber us (and these days, they probably do!) How could we possibly justify that we're right, and THEY'RE wrong? My understanding of art is that it's expression for the artist, and entertainment for those who enjoy the experience of the art. If I express "anger" to 3 people by beating all the strings on my guitar in some rhythmic or melodic way, and those three people are entertained, then I have succeeded. I could not be any more successful if that guitar performance involved the changes from "Confirmation" or the speed and dexterity of MICHAEL.ANGELO. with the feeling of Jason Becker. It wouldn't be any more meaningful as music or as art. If the expression came through, and the entertainment was present, there's nothing else to achieve in that moment. Of course, usually I, personally, have to put quite a bit of work into expressing things through my guitars, and I'm not always successful in entertaining everyone, but when I do feel I've expressed that "feeling" then I have succeeded for myself, and when I do entertain someone, then I have succeeded for them. You can't disestablish that by virtue of how or what I played... it's counter-intuitive. This requires no standards, other than if it be musical art, it must be sonic or implied as such (4'33 I think it's called... look it up.), and if it be visual art, it must be visible or implied as such. Please, if you can find a more applicable system that does not lead to unacceptable conclusions, but does explain music in a universal sense, let us all have it. We could all benefit. The above was not aimed at either Adam, or anyone in particular, but to anyone who does believe that there are knowable, universal standards of good and bad in any artform.
