    Hello people...

Now I know I am one of the 'newer' members of this list, but I feel a need to
explain something here to the even newer ones... It seems to me that the
people on this list (i mean the long term people who actually pay attention
    people) have formed a familial relation of sorts... much like siblings :}
there is, of course as in most families, much sparring and sibling rivalry.
now feel free to correct me if I'm wrong (d-man, Damon?) but that bit between
them was just some razzing between friends. im sure if damon had really been
upset we would have heard it on the jam. so no need to get defensive on his
    part, i should think. cant we all just get along? :}

I agree absolutely 100& with every word of Damon's post. Rap is really
ridiculous bullshit. I don't even consider it music, and I think the
fact that it's so popular speaks volumes on how ignorant the general
    populous of the U.S. is.

A few things I'd rather listen to than rap.....

    5. Nails + chalkboard
    4. *THUD* *THUD* *THUD*...... slamming my head against the wall.
    3. Cats fucking.
    2. My own gurgled death scream as I'm being strangled by piano wire.

I have yet to the SNL Page/Puff video, and I'm glad I didn't see it. I'm no fan of rap music, but my problem with Puffy is that every time I've heard or seen him, he seems so unmotivated. I realize that there are many here who hate all things rap, but at least some rappers are really into what they are doing and can come across as entertaining, but Puffy just sounds like he's half asleep when he is rapping. Just my $.02.

You all knew I was going to pop up sooner or later. :)

You seem to be under the impression that since we can't physically see each other, you can be an offensive, rude coward. Sorry, it don't work that way. Sure, I was offensive and rude (I'm glad that the 'pigfucker' references gave you so much entertainment), but anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm an asshole in real life, I'm not just hiding behind the computer.

    > Ok, so maybe the way I talked to MP was too straightforward, > disrespectful, etc. But, this is the internet and MP and I were not > not confronting face to face. Thus, it is harder to show the required > respect, etc.

Why is it any harder to show respect over the internet? You say what you say, and it can be respectful or not, no matter the medium.

    > I tend not to treat people on the net the same as I > would if I were to talk to them face to face.

This left me wondering if I should bother to respond at all, since you obviously don't have a clue. And if you did, you'd probably lose it.

    > A question to everyone that flamed (I don't mean disagreed with) me:

Damn right you got roasted. What do you expect when you break one of the cardinal rules of civilization? This isn't just a netiquette issue: making private matters public without the consent of both parties is simply not done, in any medium, by people with any sense of decency. You're a dick, plain and simple, and nothing you do now will change that.

    > Some of you pointed a lack of respect to Mike on my side, wouldn't > it be appropriate to practice what you preach and show some respect > for me too? Or maybe I don't deserve any respect because you > disagreed with me/I didn't show any respect to MP.

I have news for you, pigfucker (just thought I'd throw that in again, since you get off on it) - nobody 'deserves' respect. Everyone deserves some consideration, but only until they prove themselves to be an asshole, which you accomplished in spades. My respect must be earned, and you're in the red for good.

    > I do > it because I enjoy it, I don't have the chance to do this in real life, > because then my personality is more involved and I'm putting more of > myself on the line.

Ah, I understand. You're a cowardly bitch who will only risk offending people when he's safe from a much-needed ass whuppin. I understand now.

    You yellow-bellied fuck.

    > So, go ahead and call me a pigfucker, I could say yo mama and then we > would be filling the jam with all that precious flaming content, > showing our extensive vocabulary.

But yet again, you miss the point. This has nothing to do with showing extensive vocabulary. The offense was a grave one and called for swift and sure roastage. Flowery words accomplish nothing in this scenario, but if you just really are starved for vocabulary you're welcome to read the dictionary. Of course, I think your most pressing need at this point is a spine implant, you weasel. Maybe you should leave the dictionary until after you learn to be a real person.

    > And tell me my original post was > totally unintereseting, unrelated crap, because it wasn't, otherwise, > would it have generated that much response on the jam?

Nobody said it was uninteresting or unrelated. We said it was rude, offensive, and uncalled-for. Don't put words in people's mouths, we know what we said.

    > I couldn't care less whether you agree with me or not. I just find it > fun to showcase my opinion and hear others (like that enlightening > pigfucker, makes you think...)

And yet *again*, you miss the point. There was no *attempt* at enlightenment, no attempt to spark thought, for a simple reason. It wasn't necessary, because everyone else accepts that private means private, other than yourself. You're the only person who doesn't grasp that, and I don't see any evidence that you can think.

    > My personality/personal life is not the thing that is disucssed > here.

No, Mike Portnoy's is. You clueless asshole. I find it amusing that you're quick to state that your personal life doesn't need to be discussed, while the entire content of your messages to Mr. Portnoy consisted of questioning his personal life. Since you seem to have a vocabulary fixation, I'll give you a word to look up in the dictionary: 'hypocrite.' Do you think you can find that, or is your skill with the alphabet on par with your skills in logic and civilized behavior.

Go away boy, you are growing tiresome.

Well, I've begun to think some, and I've decided to not be so elitist about things....It's really closing me off from some really great creations.

First of all, I don't see anything wrong with what Puff Daddy is doing, all he's doing is taken some old songs, reworking them, remixing them, and passing the new stuff as his own. This does, in fact, show some creativity and artistic ability. Not everyone can do the brilliant jobs of remixes that he does. You say they did not do the performance of kashmir well, but perhaps it was done the way that Puff Daddy thought it should be done. A reworked song doesn't have to sound like the original. To say that Puff Daddy is a no-talent rip off is totally off target, he's an entertainer who uses his production and musical knowledge to do some really good reworked music....I surely hope that these guys don't kill each other off, cause I'm starting to get into it all....well, good bye...:)

Well, to clear it up... there is a nother band called Superior. They do (as far as I know) Brit Pop and we are still trying to get rid of the problem. We have started a registration at the Patent and Trademark Office in Washington DC but this is taking time. We started this in November last year or so and still don't know if we will be registered or not. We've been told that things will be done in June this year or so. If we get registered then, we will try to kick the other Superior's behind. :) If not... we have a big problem...

That's quite alright. I'm always ready to discuss Floyd. And to those who dislike the non-DT content remember, DT does Floyd covers, so it is related . . . sort of . . .

    > We agree there. The person who wrote with desdain about the Roger > Waters era PF simply hates Roger.

Wee bit of an understatement. I don't just hate Roger. I despise him. He can't sing worth shit. He was a control freak. He SPIT in an audience members face during the "Animals" tour just because he was pissed off. He forced Rick out of the band. His 90 Wall Remake was an embarrassment. His head got so big in the early 80s that he decided that he could just "disband" Floyd without even asking the other guys in the band. I'd appreciate knowing what there was to LIKE about Roger.

Agreed. Delicate Sound did destroy Comfortably Numb. But then that exact same group of musicians (with different female backup vocalists) turned around and did the BEST version of that song ever on Pulse.

: the people that PF gathered to help them pull > out that tour do fairly well their jobs as far as playing their > instruments BUT when it comes to singing, they SUCK royally!

I'd disagree. I think DSoT was just a bad performance. Pulse proves that those same guys (I think they're the same anyway) are incredible vocalists.

I'm disgusted by some of the recent posts

First - you guys (me included) flood the jam with posts stating that Mike Portnoy DOES NOT HAVE to defend his musical choices. That Serioussi is a dick for asking the question "Do you have to live off your art?" You say that MP has the right to do what he wants.

Guess what - I agree with this. Mike Portnoy and DT can do whatever they want. If they start going in a direction that no long interests me, I'll stop listening. I won't scream out that the need for money killed DT. I'll just accept I don't like the new DT album (hasn't happened for me yet btw) I may gripe - but I won't accuse them of "doing anything for money". Cause it would just be a guess.

Now here is where I get disgusted.

Saturday - SNL - Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page (didn't actually see it myself) play Kashmir. Fine, you don't like it but then I constantly read posts to this effect: "Are Paige/Plant REALLY that hard up for money?"

Do you see the irony in this? The cases are slightly different (in that Serriousi aired a private discussion in public and attacked MP directly) but the underlying theme is the same. Music for money. When DT may have supposedly done this, its okay. When Page may have supposedly done this, its not. Kinda hypocritical don't you think.

Here are some other reasons Page may have done it 1 - Page actually enjoys Puff's version 2 - Page is honored that a song he was a part of is redone by another 3 - Page just likes to play and had fun

So go ahead. Opinions are fine. You can air your disgust. But I sure hope that none of you that said "DT can do whatever they want" didn't complain about Puffy Page. And so close to each other. In the same digest even.

If you are going to apply a standard of rules to conduct towards music, make sure it is for ALL music. Not just the music YOU like.

Imagine that I stole your car, had it re-painted, and drove up to your house to say, "Hey, Kev! Check out my new ride!"

Notorious Puff Doggy is good at two things. 1) Making people think he is a gifted artist. 2) Karaoke.

    > Not everyone can do the brilliant jobs of remixes that he does.

I'd be willing to bet that with a few hours of free time, I could *gak!* reboot my machine into Windows and do the same remix he does with the stock SoundBlaster software.

    > A reworked song doesn't have to sound like the original.

You're absolutely right. Dream Theater's reworking of "Tears," for example, is similar to the original in a lot of ways, but it's distinctively Dream Theater in a lot of ways, too. Puff Dude's "I Miss That Dead Crack Dealer" or whatever the former Police song was called *is* the original, with the vocals removed and replaced, and with an imitation drum track laid on top.

(Don't get on my case. That was not, nor was it intended to be a racist remark. It is common knowledge that the song is dedicated to that big fat guy, who used to be a professional crack dealer. Look it up.)

    > To say that Puff Daddy is a no-talent rip off is totally off > target, he's an entertainer who uses his production and musical > knowledge to do some really good reworked music.

He might be the most talented musician in the world, but he hasn't shown it yet. He has not once in his professional career created music. He talks over other people's music. It's the lowest common denominator. That has got to be the absolute laziest way to create a record. It is completely abhorrent to me.

Actually, that's not entirely true. I could give a shit whether he lives, dies, or grows mushrooms out of his ass. But the popular media, in the name of the Almighty Dollar, have convinced the world's pop-culture lemmings that it is worthy of praise, admiration, and -- most importantly -- their money. That turns my stomach. The more the general public is led to believe that this is Art which must be Revered, the more difficult it will be for artists to make a living at their art.

And I'm not just talking about music, either. (Oh, great, D-Man's off on a rant.) Check the local movie theater. Titanic. Godzilla. Flubber. All remakes of old ideas, because movie makers couldn't think of any new stories. All mass-marketed to death, so that the Lemmings would decide that they are Good. And all named with one-word titles so stupid Americans could remember what to order tickets for at the box office.

Art is dying, folks. The longer we allow utter shit to gain popularity and acclaim, the harder it will be to find true art.

I'm sorry to pick on you personally, Kevin. Your post merely inspired me to put off this final project -- er, I mean, to examine where we've come as a society, and how quickly we're headed down the shitter.

*phew* OK, I'm done. (For now.) Finals suck! -d
