I got the Irving Plaza show, which pretty much kicked total ass.
Watching Petrucci "yawn" through Hot For Teacher says it all... If
anyone has any other shows they want to trade, I'm up for it.

That would be "Short Circuit". Now what do I win?!?!

<<I know this is non-DT related, but it relates to the discussion about rap singers stealing work from real musicians. I am watching right now probably the WORST and most DISGRACEFUL performances of a great song by a rap singer. I am watching SNL and Puff Daddy is totally RUINING Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. I feel terribly sorry for the millions of kids around my age being exposed to this catastrophy of a song, instead of the great original.>> Well...I haven't heard this one yet, but I did hear a rap "remake" of Stairway to Heaven... do the original artists actually give their permission to the rappers to do this? Can't believe it... Totikus

Dude, seriously. If you don't understand that, you don't deserve to have an e-mail account.

Imagine you had a serious phone conversation with somebody. It doesn't have to be embarrasing, just highly personal. Say you discussed your income, and how you feel about your boss. Now imagine hearing that conversation on the radio the next morning.

    > I doubt that there's any > information on the email that neither MP nor me would > consider extremely private and it does involve the jam in > a way. Anyways, I apologize if I offended anyone by doing > that, it won't happen again.

You offended all of us, because you sullied one of the most basic forms of trust on the internet -- that private mail stays private.

    > respect, etc. I tend not to treat people on the net the same as I > would if I were to talk to them face to face. Maybe I should change > that, but I can't undo what I have already done.

Yeah, you definitely need to get out of the house a little more before you start sending e-mail again. This isn't make-believe. Just because we show up as words on a screen, rather than pictures and sounds, doesn't mean we're not real people. Your computer isn't making this up. We exist. We're people. Respect all people the same way, regardless of the medium of communication.

    > Anyways, don't > expect me to be ultimately polite to mike if you can't do the same.

That's a revoltingly illogical argument. If we all treat you like shit and kick your dog and feel up your sister, Mike still has done nothing but show you respect. Therefore, he deserves your respect back. Judge what each person deserves based on how each person treats you.

Abused children use that same line of reasoning to abuse their children. It's kinda frightening to see it used here.

    > Ok, THIS IS NOT ME - I don't post on the internet to showcase my > personality, I discuss. I don't expect to make any friends, nor do

That's good. Don't sit by the phone.

    > it because I enjoy it, I don't have the chance to do this in real life,

THIS IS REAL LIFE. For the benefit of everyone else on earth, I suggest that you stop using e-mail altogether until you understand that.

I bet you *still* don't understand that. -d

My DS encounters: First off, I saw them play at the now defunct Strand in Providence on Fix '96 mini tour. One of the best shows I've seen in general. Anyway, I got my first ever backstage pass from the club. I was hanging out after the show, and Derek was the first one out. There were about 5 or 6 girls with whom he was talking to. Needless to say, it took me about 15 minutes to get him to sign my ACOS cover. He did come off at first like everyone else has been saying. But then, we started talking about Kiss' "Revenge" tour in '92, on which he played, and that I found him to be much better than Gary Corbett. Also, we were taling about Eric Singer, who is his roomate. After a while, I got to meet the other guys, which was great. Mike even remembered me from one of his drum clinics a few weeks before. Fast forward to last Oct. They played at Lupo's here asa a warm up gig for the local radio station. About halfway into the 2nd band's set, who walks out but DS!! He had remembered me from 10 mos. earlier! This guy's got a great memory. Anyway, the show was great,as usual, and this time I met everyone again, except for JM. Oh, well. Anyway, that's my story. Later jammers.

Dios mio! That show was ABSOLUTELY phenomenal!!! I came all the way out from Boston and was not the least bit irritated with the discomfort of a cumulative 16 hours in a bus, b/c the show made the journey TOTALLY worth it. I LOVE DT's group dynamic. All the members had something unique to contribute to the show, both musically and in terms of presence. They all complement each other very very very well. Impressions...At first, I felt that Derek seemed like a pretty arrogant musician...But, as the show progressed, he was continually smiling at the audience and playing stage games with MP. Mike was super interactive with the fans and played an incredible drum solo. Woo hoo!! NP reincarnate...(though I realize the divine Peart is still kicking). :) James LaBrie is perhaps the best vocalist I have ever heard. Anna Lee was tremendous. JP played a SUPER cool guitar solo (I especially appreciated the classical allusion). He also presented himself as a very genuine person on stage. No arrogance. John Myung was perhaps the least pronounced among the band members, only because he seemed so shy. I don't think I saw him smile once during the entire show (despite the fact that I was yelling amusing Korean phrases at him). :) Nevertheless, his fellow band members made up for any lack of extroversion on Myung's part. And his bass playing was FLAWLESS. I am still in awe of their performance.

Just as a side remark. I've read the various comments about DT "selling out." I totally agree that they have a right to vary their musical style. That is what progressive rock is...the perpetual metamorphoses of music...the introduction of new instruments, the fusion and reconstitution of old genres...Nobody should think that b/c FII isn't quite as heavy as some of their past work that it is not legitimate.

I just suggested > that they don't have to earn more money through music but get > another job than that, trying to make their music what they want > (and FII might be that, though it seems more commercial) without > considering sales of albums.

Suggested, my ass. You told Mike Portnoy to get another job to earn money because that would be the only way that his music could continue to make you happy. We may very well buy the records, but if we stop liking the music we'll just stop buying them. THAT is the end of the artist-fan relationship. DT is great and makes it stronger than that. <Thanks, guys.> When Mike Portnoy starts telling YOU how to do YOUR job, well, then you may have something worthwhile to say, but for now you're just mudslinging, antagonizing, whatever.

Should we tell Jimmy Page that if he doesn't stop playing for Puffy then we, the record-buying public, will be upset? <Actually, maybe we should!>

Do you know--do you have any CLUE--how much it means for a musician to make a living through music? Well, it means a great deal. I learned a long time ago that a musician who gets the most pleasure out of his art <regardless fo how much money it makes him> should always think of himself as a musician FIRST. If you work in sales during the day and gig at night, don't tell people that you're a salesman who has a band; tell people you're a musician who also works in sales. Does that make you a poseur? No, of course not. As long as you really do consider yourself a musician, your conscience is clear. You'll FEEL better, too.

If you're fortunate enough to make your living solely through your art you'll try to hang onto the means to do so, namely a contract. That's what DT is doing. Trying to make themselves, their bosses and the customers happy. Do any of us do any less in our respective jobs?

    > This is the internet, where > does it say one is not allowed to have a person faced with > questions considering his method of making a living?

STOP saying that! It is obvious that choose to hide in the anonymity of the internet due to you other comments about how things said over the internet you wouldn't say in real life. I'm sure many of us here on the 'jam <like me> don't say anything over the email that we wouldn't say in real life.

What do you do for a living? are you happy with it? How do you know WE are happy with what you do for a living? If you don't care what we think about how you make YOUR living, then you have nothing to say to Mike Portnoy about how he makes his.

It is this mentality that makes the internet such a dangerous place. Indulge me for a minute, and consider someone else using a defense like that. Say, one of the denizens of AOL's chat pits. Say a 45-year old male pedophile logged in posing as a 13-year old girl in order to make contact with young boys. Let's say he gets caught, and in his defense, he says "I do this because I enjoy it. I don't have a chance to do this in real life. This is different - this is the internet."

I think you can see here why I, personally, don't buy that crap. Anyone who is so deluded as to believe that they can "be" whatever they want on the internet, and simply by the nature of the medium, it absolves them of any resposibility for the consequences; well....I'm sure you can finish that thought.

    > Ok, THIS IS NOT ME

So what you're saying is that you are misrepresenting yourself; not being true to yourself; passing yourself off as something you're not. Hey! isn't that what you were all upset at Mike for doing with DT?

THAT FUCKING RULED. I don't think I could have possibly asked for a better show. James's singing was flawless. Portnoy's drum solo during CIAW was absolutely mind-numbing. Petrucci's guitar solo was amazing, especially Flight of the Bumblebee and Paradigm Shift (during which MP came out and played). "Speak to Me" was a nice surprise. It sounds great live. Basically the set list was the same as Irving Plaza the night before -- "ACOS I&II", "JLMB", "BMS", "TTT"(w/Freebird), "LITS", "AL", "STM", "TOT", "CIAW", "Lie", "PS"(w/Have a Cigar), "PMU", Encore Medley "MetI, LtL, ACOS VII". (I may have screwed up the order there).

Disappointments: No "Voices", "Scarred", "New Millenium". Driving in Philly REALLY SUCKS. Couldn't stay afterwards and meet the band. Didn't meet any 'jammers. James was sporting a 'stache. :)

Good things: No "YNM". Someone behind me who wasn't ashamed to really get into the music thus making me not the only idiot in the back totally grooving to every song, singing, and banging my friggin' head to the heavy parts. :) All in all, my first DT concert was the best show I've ever been to, topping Pantera in August '96 and Metallica in Feb. '97.

    Enough out of me anyway.

not fair, not fair! This was one of the funniest episodes I've seen! Celebrity Jeophardy is always funny, goat boy is always funny, and david duchovney smashing that guitar was hysterical. He does a great jeff goldblum. I had no idea he could be funny.

Maybe you saw em at a shitty club... Big Wreck was not at ALL sloppy when we saw em. I didn't dig the music too much, but there was no doubt that the guitarist had chops. He was a cross between Steve Morse and Bonnie Raitt or something. :) The music and the lyrics were kind of tired. They bored me.

Wow. You're a dick. You don't even explain your reasons... you just say "This sucks," or "This Rules!" What can we POSSIBLY gain from a review like that.

    > As for comparing FII and LTE, it is kind of silly i think.

My sentiment exactly. I really don't think any of this stuff sounds too much like DT. Maybe on Petrucci's improvised solos, where his "style" is the connecting factor. But for the most part, this sounds more like a Steve Morse record than a DT record.

It's just not yours to decide. You know? I mean, if he wanted it to be a public exchange, he would have addressed it publicly. His statements were directed at YOU alone. And sometimes people will say something to a friend that they wouldn't want to say to a group of people, like "Hey, that Dr_Mosh is a real fruitbag!" It's okay to say, but it's not something your friend should pass on.

It's considered that in life, you do not have the right to question the rights of someone else to make a living exactly how they want to, so long as it doesn't break any laws. The pursuit of happiness. I am appalled that you can't just see how your simple question is completely rude and obnoxious. I teach guitar. If you seriously suggested that I should just flip burgers, because I'd have more hours, and with overtime I might make more money, I might just fly out there and beat your head in, or I might just ignore you as a real jag off. You make your living how you want. Mike Portnoy doesn't question you on that. So long as Portnoy isn't selling drugs or manufacturing kiddie porn, I think he's right in his career choice. And I still don't see how you think this is a sell out album. Do you think DT would release a disc they're not proud of?
