it all happened on saturday night live. i'm still shocked at the sight of seeing those 2 on stage together...puff daddy doing his thing over a re- hashed/re-worked version of "kashmir". they HAD to maul one of the really good zeppelin songs, did they? if they were going to re-hash a zeppelin song, why couldn't they at least do it well?

mind you, the rock and rap mix has worked before, but this was a complete mockery, in my opinion.

I saw Full on the Mouth at the Daytona's show last week, and I was favorably impressed. The mixture of "grunge-meets-electronic" was fairly original and unique. The crowd seemed to like them more than most opening bands. No one booed; people even clapped! <g> I'd be happy to see Full on the Mouth again.

Most opening bands are very "sloppy" and you can't hear a note of the music. It just sounds like a bunch of noise. I felt Big Wreck was that way, along with other openers I've seen like Darlahood (ugh), Reef (ugh), David Poe (ugh), and even Tonic. (K's Choice and Tonic opened for The Verve Pipe last summer. Tonic was awful in concert, but K's Choice was WONDERFUL! I had never heard of them before that show, but I've practically become a K's Choice groupie! <g> Any other K's Choice fans out there? E-mail me.)

As far as the rest of the show... James looked like a French waiter with the moustache. Mike is as cool in person as one could ever want. The setlist was damn cool. And Chris Ptacek bores me.

Well, I can see how some people would think that DT "sold out" with FII. It's not a guitar heavy album like Awake, and many of the more "metalheads" out there that listen to DT probably would think that. FII is a totally different style album, and DT is yet another band that has a different sound with almost every album they put out. Many Queensryche fans felt the same way when Promised Land came out and it was so different. For some reason, unless a band rehashes their previous material, some of their fans will always think that they sold out. These bands are just living up to their "progressive" title. I guess those are people in love with albums more than in love with the bands...Another thing, I really like Sherinian, I know this may be strange and different, but I almost like him better than Moore. Not to take away from Moore, cuz he's incredible, but I really like Derek's voicings on his chords, he's got a definite jazz fusion influence. I think he's much more of a complement to the band and his presence feeds the other guys really well.

As for comparing FII and LTE, it is kind of silly i think. These are totally different styles of albums, with one being an instrumental and one being a regular 5 piece band with vocals....Both are great in their own way. All of the musicians on both albums play their asses off. As for Rudess, he's great, but he has s a very different style than Derek, he's got more classical training i believe, and it shows. I do say though, that Rudess leaves me a little cold at times. Derek's got a little more feeling in his playing, IMO....

Another thing, I've been seeing some posts about female artists like Tori and Sarah Mclaghlin(sp?) I thought i might mention Joni Mitchell. Much of her stuff is excellent. Started in the 70's so she's a little hippie-ish, but damn good. Often too, she'll have some great instrumental sections too, and she ALWAYS has some great bass work on her albums....check her out

you missed the best fucking dream theater show in history... i've seen them 6 times and this by far exceeds any DT show i have ever seen, james was perfect, even better than perfect, the harmonies were great, the crowd was great, JP and MP jammed on a little LTE, derek had 3 freakin trinitys on stage, and myung was excellent as usual. also i must add that MP did the best drum solo i ever seen, he took the drum off the kit, walked up to the stage, played on it, played on the floor, played on a mic, took the drum into the audience and jammed with a fan. hell he even brought out what looked to be probably his first kit with DT, it even said "Majesty" on it i think, he play Anna Lee with it, and some other Bsides tune that i don't recall ever hearing. But anyway i must say that was the best DT concert i have ever seen, if there is such a thing as a musical orgasm, i think i might have had about 50 or 60 of them.

I dont know, man. I got LTE a few days after it was released, and I can still sit down and listen to 1, 3, 5, and 8 just non-stop, all day long. And you know how some say once you learn to play a part from a really awesome song, that song looses its majical quality. I spent a long time learning some of those songs on the guitar, and I love them even more.

    >On the other hand, I find myself liking Falling Into Infinity more each time I listen to it.

I agree with this, though not at the expense of LTE. JLMB is the greatest driving song EVER. I used to think the end part of Metallica's One was the best, but this FAR surpasses it. What an awesome song.

    >(Just as an aside, do you think DT ever gets tired of hearing how frikkin great I&W is?)

GREAT question. Why dont we ask MP. So, Mike, you ever get tired of being told how great I&W is?

Call me crazy, but I actually thought that the Puffy/Page performance on Saturday Night Live was pretty cool. It shows that at least one rapper has an open mind and can appreciate quality music. But yeah, it was better the way it was before Puffy tainted it. By the way, does anyone know if DT will be hitting Los Angeles again? I'm just getting into the band (very much), and I missed them when they came in November.

At the risk of offending many of you out there, here is my opinion of 2 new CD's:

HELLOWEEN 'Better Than Raw' Rating 9/10 Helloween are back with possibly their best album since the classic 'Keeper' albums of the later 80's. I never thought too much of singer Andi Deris or the 2 post Michael Kiske Helloween albums that Deris sung on. ]From start to finish 'BTR' is spot on the money, Deris's vocals are quite varied, those killer riffs of old have returned and the songwriting is far superior to anything on 'Master Of The Rings' and 'Time Of The Oath'. The production is first class and the cover artwork is superb, a very pleasant surprise and return to form from Helloween.

EMPTY TREMOR 'Apocolokyntosys' Rating 6/10 As much as I wanted to hate this disc, mainly due to Arash's over zealous hype, I gave this a good listen and was quite surprised by the fact that it bore no resemblance to our beloved 'I&W'. This young band shows plenty of potential, all the songs are well written and well played. None of the songs really stand out and grab me by the short and curlies , one or two of the songs simply try to hard to be 'prog', with too many drum fills. A very promising debut and I see tonnes of potential for future releases.

    > You suck because you post private email...

Well, no matter how I respond to that you would say I'm an asshole. But please, explain why it is so terrible to post a private email conversation. I doubt that there's any information on the email that neither MP nor me would consider extremely private and it does involve the jam in a way. Anyways, I apologize if I offended anyone by doing that, it won't happen again.

    > They have a right to change. They have a right to > make money also. Music is their job and source of income. [and the likes]

I never said they're not allowed to do that. I just suggested that they don't have to earn more money through music but get another job than that, trying to make their music what they want (and FII might be that, though it seems more commercial) without considering sales of albums. This is the internet, where does it say one is not allowed to have a person faced with questions considering his method of making a living?

    > If you want to shit on ppl we admire and respect make sure you do > it out of our sight and in the gutter, I might add, where you > and your stupid questions to MP belong... [and others of that type]

Ok, so maybe the way I talked to MP was too straightforward, disrespectful, etc. But, this is the internet and MP and I were not not confronting face to face. Thus, it is harder to show the required respect, etc. I tend not to treat people on the net the same as I would if I were to talk to them face to face. Maybe I should change that, but I can't undo what I have already done.

A question to everyone that flamed (I don't mean disagreed with) me: Some of you pointed a lack of respect to Mike on my side, wouldn't it be appropriate to practice what you preach and show some respect for me too? Or maybe I don't deserve any respect because you disagreed with me/I didn't show any respect to MP. Anyways, don't expect me to be ultimately polite to mike if you can't do the same. (gotta love the pigfucker...)

    > So, do these shows of bravado and individuality get you laid? I hope > so, because it's sure not making you any friends. It'd really be shame > if you made a fool of yourself for absolutely nothing.

Ok, THIS IS NOT ME - I don't post on the internet to showcase my personality, I discuss. I don't expect to make any friends, nor do I want to get laid by doing this shit, nor anything of the like. I do it because I enjoy it, I don't have the chance to do this in real life, because then my personality is more involved and I'm putting more of myself on the line. This is different - this is the internet. I don't want you to love me, in fact, I don't care about what you think of me. So, go ahead and call me a pigfucker, I could say yo mama and then we would be filling the jam with all that precious flaming content, showing our extensive vocabulary. And tell me my original post was totally unintereseting, unrelated crap, because it wasn't, otherwise, would it have generated that much response on the jam?

    > Well, now that Seroussi has committed Ytse-Suicide, I am just waiting > for his brilliant and enlightening reply. The one that changes all > of our minds to conform to his precious sense of reality.

I couldn't care less whether you agree with me or not. I just find it fun to showcase my opinion and hear others (like that enlightening pigfucker, makes you think...)

    > This guys post to the jam was meant to illicit only one thing - a > response from Mike Portnoy.

Thank you for reading my mind - of course reading the jam and arguing with MP (+don't forget pigfucking!!!) are the only things that fill my empty life, which is exactly the reason why I'm more than a hundred jams behind. I want to read every jam slowly, word-to-word. Now, don't you think that if I were that bored I would have posted to the jam about that right after MP's last response? No, I have better (more important) things to do - I just consider this fun. My personality/personal life is not the thing that is disucssed here.

    Hey everyone.

I'm just butting in to drop another advertisment for my band's site, so I'll keep it brief!

"Day of Honour", the Aussie Prog Metal band, have moved to the following URL:

    members.easyspace.com/honour

This move was made to allow us to use MP3 files, which our previous server would not allow! Only one MP3 is there as yet, an instrumental we sort of "whipped up" one day during tracking drums. Nathan just basically played for 4 minutes or so and Adrian and I overdubbed parts to create what you can now download! There will be more added as we complete it.

And if you check it out and like it, please let me know. Either on the jam or by private email. On the jam would be cool as we need lots of exposure!! :)

    Thanks all!
