(Apologies for the length of this post, I hope it's not dripping with HTML
    tags this time.)

Listening to Liquid Tension Experiment for the first time was a much better
experience for me than the first time I played Falling Into Infinity. I was
blown away by the speed and mind-numbing chops of "Paradigm Shift," and then
it just didn't stop, which blew me away even more.

And I do remember thinking at the time that THIS is what I'd wanted to hear
when I put Falling Into Infinity into the CD player so many months before.
And yeah, for a sec, I thought, "if only DT had done this."

But time has passed, and while listening to LTE for the first time was
amazing, the novelty seems to have worn off. On the other hand, I find
myself liking Falling Into Infinity more each time I listen to it. I
consider it a very solid album, and like one of the other jammers who posted
on this subject, I place it at a somewhat distant second behind Images and
Words. (Just as an aside, do you think DT ever gets tired of hearing how
    frikkin great I&W is?)

I'd go so far as to say some of DT's best stuff ever is right there on
Falling Into Infinity. The songs on FII are more personal, better written,
and more well-produced. Each one is a little finished product, polished and
refined, whereas LTE strikes me as a collection of jam sessions. Brilliant,
nifty-as-hell jam sessions, but not very deep. IMO (ATS). In that regard, I
don't even know if the two albums can be compared fairly.

And as for Jordan Rudess, yes, he's a great keyboardist, as evinced by LTE.
But hearing that album, I have to say I'm glad Dream Theater went with
Derek. He seems to have a bit more of a distinctive style. Rudess struck me
as having graduated from the Jens Johanssen/Tony Macalpine Institute of
    Keyshredding.

Of course, I could be totally wrong about everything.

Well the title just about sums it up. TKH was always a favorite to begin
with. After *many* listens to the Jap HY CD Single, I have to say that for
me, the single most absolutely fucking brilliant thing that DT has ever done
is the most recent live version of AH/TKH. The new jazzy keyboard-based
section is tits. The slide guitar solo is amazingly beautiful and works
well. (I bet JP was only able to pull that off because of the music theory
classes he took at Berklee.) And if I were to guess, I would bet that DS
had some input in the "new" sections.

On the positive side, many thanks to the band for making this available. On
the downside though, it is a shame that this material will not be easily
accessible to many fans. Yes, it is expensive to buy a Jap import even of a
CD single. But even though it has to be painful, do yourself a favor and
fork over the bucks. I personally guarantee that you will be glad that you
    did so.

I want to be YoUnique !!!!!!!!!!!

Wow !! Is it so difficult to understand that when not playing "absolutely
fucking brilliant" music, these guys double as HUMAN ?? Ever had a bad day
at work ?? Almost everything these guys do is in front of people. In the
Limelight, so to say. I think that one of the most amazing things about
these guys is that they are kind and sincere people who haven't lost there

id probably advise getting UTP next, BFP is one of those discs people either
adore or hate with a vengeance. UTP is more like LE than BFP is. i like all
three though, BFP is just a little harder to digest. the new CD (from the
choirgirl hotel) is quite a departure from the others, tori has stated that
LE, UTP, and BFP are meant to be like a trilogy. i personally dont think you
can wrong with any tori cd. the thing that sucks the most about tori's stuff
though is some of her very best work is on her bsides and you have to collect
a lot of singles to get all of it (or find boots, etc.) id be happy to make
tapes of what i have for you, my tori collection far outnumbers any DT i have.
(speaking of which, itchy - i wrote you an email about the spark single you
didnt have, and you never responded)

    >>Also, can anyone give me any insight towards the artist Sarah McLaughlin
    (sp?). <<

sarah mclachlan - id highly recommend Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (it has the
song "possession" on it, you might have heard that one), its easily one of my
favorite albums ever. sarah is very dreamy sounding, calmer than tori is, a
more "adult contemporary" sound, her stuff has a lot of ambience in it, its
pretty mellow stuff compared to tori. shes a bit like loreena mckennitt but
less celtic sounding, sarahs vocals are heavier, thicker, more alto-ish than
loreena, although she does sometimes sing up there in the higher registers (i
prefer her lower range myself though). i have no idea on sarah's influences.

hope that helps, drop me an email if you want to discuss either one of them
    more.

First it was wrong to post PRIVATE e-mail. You owe the Jam and MP an
    apology.

    > > > > The catchier & more mainstream music you make -> more $ -> more
    > freedom
    > > > > to create catchy mainstream music (metallica comes to mind...)

Why do you put words in MP's mouth? Just because Metallica did something
has no bearing on what DT will do. You have no idea what DT will do in
the future, yet you somehow know what their next album will sound like?
Who are your sources? Why don't you back up what you are saying with
some real facts instead of trying to correlate apples (Metallica) and
    oranges (DT)?

And the last time I checked DT was influenced by many mainstream bands.
DT has never been an anti-pop band. Yes early on they were more
progressive, but look at their influences. The best way to start in the
    Uncovered show setlist.

Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding- Elton John- hardly prog
Perfect Strangers- Deep Purple- somewhat prog
Red Hill Mining Town- U2- not prog, very poppish
The Rover/Achilles Last Stand/The Song Remains the Same- Led Zeppelin-
    classic rock, not prog
    Tears- Rush- prog
Damage Inc- Metallica- metal, not prog
Happiness is a Warm Gun- The Beatles- the supreme mainstream band
    Easter- Marillion- prog
    Winter- Tori Amos- somewhat prog
In the Dead of the Night- UK- prog/fusion
    Yes Medley- Yes- prog
In the Flesh?- Pink Floyd- prog
Carry on Wayward Son- Kansas- prog
    Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen- somewhat prog
Lovin, Touchin, Squeezing- Journey- not prog
Cruise Control- Dixie Dregs- somewhat prog
Turn it on Again- Genesis- prog

As you can see DT has a wide range of influences. They are not strictly
    prog, and FII represents that.

    > > > > And make your hands dirty with some real work would be so bad?

    > > > > live off your art?

What has been DT doing since the summer. Oh let's see. I believe they
recorded an album, and then started touring in October. DT has been
touring virtually non-stop since then. But then again playing music many
miles every night away from your family and home is not real work. I've
seen them five times this tour, and they are earning every cent. Get a
    clue.

Well now that I've got my opinion of Seroussi off my chest, here's a long review of the May 8 concert in New York at Irving Plaza. I decided to go because I finished finals here in Boston on Thursday, my flight home is Tuesday. So what better to do than spend some free time by seeing DT.

Well the adventure began in Boston. Me (aka Sbaotage and Igor), and two fellow Boston Jammers Brian (aka Wacky and Frankie) and Julie (aka Binky and Renee) picked me up in front of my dorm Friday morning at 10:30. The next hour was spent in the cosmetic department of Filene's (Binky had to return something). The highlight of the trip to Filene's was Binky almost hitting a car as she parked. What is it with me and collisions with DT shows?! :)

We then started the drive to NY. We made good time in the Binkymobile. We stopped for lunch in Hartford. Binky did an exquisite job parallel parking in Hartford. Soon we were in the state of NY. You can tell your in NY because of how people start driving. They are maniacs there. Then the trip started getting fun. :)

Wacky and Binky were staying the weekend in NY, so they needed a hotel. They decided to try to save money and get one in Yonkers. Well they could not find one there. But we did drive through the Bronx not once but twice. :) That is an experience everyone should try. I did not mind that much because it's all part of the adventure. You don't want to just drive to the show, watch DT kick ass and drive back. There has to be the adventure element.

Eventually we reached Manhattan around 5:00, after some traffic and discussion about directions, they found a hotel. Then we decided to head to Irving Plaza. After all this post is a review of the show. There was a long line already. We got in and found places to watch the show. Irving Plaza is a nice venue.

Onto the show. Whoever said club shows suck was not at last night's show. Full of the Mouth was ok. But DT was perfect. They were real pumped for this show. The setlists follows: ACOS I+II, Just Let Me Breathe, Burning My Soul, Take the Time with bits of Freebird, some other cover which I did not know, YYZ, Anna Lee and Speak to Me (on second drum kit in front of the stage), Lines in the Sand, Caught in a Web (with drum solo. MP went to the audience with a drum and two audience members soloed with him. One tried to show him up, but MP showed who was the better drummer), Lie, Guitar Solo (w/ MP on Paradigm Shift, Flight of the Bumblebee and lots of other stuff), Peruvian Skies (w/ Have a Cigar), Pull Me Under, Trial of Tears. Encore medley Metropolis Pt.1, Learning to Live, and ACOS VII.

Other highlights were MP and DS playing catch with some drumsticks during the Lie solo. JL, who was sporting a moustache, was awesome. He was the best I've seen him. He hit every note and some exras. He had great stage presence. Anna Lee is awesome live. Speak to Me is great. The whole band was on. It was funny because it was raining the whole day in New York, so Trial of Tears was even cooler.

After the show I talked with some Jammers and left. I had a 3:15 AM bus back to Boston. Everyone should also experience Port Authority bus station at 3:00 AM, there are some interesting characters there. Well I made it back to Boston at 7:15 AM without a problem. I can die now after seeing the greatest concert of all time.

Thanks to Wacky and Binky for the ride, Michael Handverger for subway directions and DT for an amazing adventure.

Regarding the semi-debate about possible "commercialism" playing part in any of DT's stuff:

Folks, I truly believe that DT is a group of guys who get together and write music based on what they feel and what they like, and it kind of bugs me that people seem to be over-analyzing their intentions. They are the FARTHEST thing I have ever seen from "sellout", and just because they have produced CD's in different styles / different frames of mind does not mean it's completely for a money advantage. They EXPERIMENT with their music, which is EXACTLY why I love them so much. Even if they ever did put out a CD with money in mind, I would support it 100% because if it means them being able continue writing and releasing albums, then by all means let them do it without whining and complaining about it.

I don't want this band to go away, I want them to have the advantages that "mainstream" bands do, like marketing/promotion and a healthy budget to record with, and support from the record label. *IF* they ever do something in order to improve their recording and playing conditions, I will back them up 100% on it, because you can't expect them to starve in order to please everyone.

You guys don't have to agree with me, I just thought that since there always seems to be someone crying about something the band has done like DT personally OWES them, that I might give another take on the subject. Isn't it nice to have both opinions/sides expressed?

You cannot diminish DT's integrity if they choose to experiment with new styles on their recordings. It's all good. If someone likes one style or CD less than the others, does that give them the right to accuse DT of some sort of treacherous act against them? These guys are just making CD's and playing for us, and it's some of the best music I've ever heard in my life. WTF is the problem??? Without a few songs that are "industry pleasing" DT could miss out on future opportunities to record CD's for us, and that would be a true tragedy for us fans.

    See you in Cincinnati Monday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sincerely, Dave Hatlee (aka buster)

First, I don't get instant messages, we save those for those poor unfortunates on America Online. Second, since the punctuation that makes up smileys is punctuation, and you can set your speech program to not read punctuation for a natural sounding read, I don't necessarily hear the smileys. Got me into trouble a few times when I didn't realize that somebody was joking or being sarcastic and I turned up the broiler on their ass. Thirdly, I don't use speech recognition and never will. I have been typing for almost ... no for 15 years. Why stop now. Yes, win95 is a pest. And I would love DOS forever if it weren't so obsolete. And I used to be a frequent poster, but ... I don't know, not much to say lately. I used to be a serious wiseass ... I still am ... but I don't use the ytsejam to air my obnoxious attitude all the time. I used to be on IRC a lot but I had school and then I got a gf and that took up all my time. Since I am single again, I go there sometimes, but hardly recgoznie anyboby. And regardless of whether or not I am blind, sighted, or left handed, flame me anyway if you must. Although I have to warn anybody who tries, I am not a nice guy when flamed. Ask some of the ytsevets about the f sharp incident. :)
