Okay all I have to say is Seroussi vs. Mike Portnoy - no need to quote him.

This guys post to the jam was meant to illicit only one thing - a response
from Mike Portnoy. The last post was 4/28 by Serioussi. Mike Portnoy had
realized that the only way to stop this guy was to stop replying. So
Serioussi life became empty (more empty) He WANTED to argue with MP. So he
posted the personal emails to the ytsejam thinking "this will get MP to talk
to my pathetic ass again." So hopefully MP will refrain from acknowledging
this whole thread. He doesn't need to explain himself to the ytsejam. I
don't believe MP ever admitted to "making FII more commercial" in his
responses. I think he just stated the OBVIOUS fact that more $ = more
creative freedom. And Serioussi should feel PRIVILEGED that he even got the
first response from MP. I haven't received a response from MP on an email yet
    - but I don't take it personally. MP already hung and with my friend and I
for about 30 minutes before a show - so he has already exceeded my
    expectations of a "cool guy".

Being so late to respond to this whole thread, I can now quote other responses

    KEVCOM responded with:
<<Itchy, can something be done about this? Get him outta here.>>

Dude, Itchy ain't the guy to talk to. You gotta talk to Mike Bahr. He can
get this Serioussi "ly fucked in the head" guy off the planet, not just the
    jam :o)

    Carol Dellinger wrote:
<<Remember...if you have manners and respect you have everything!>>

I don't have any manners. Hey Serriousi, I agree with you. Perhaps we can
meet to discuss the cowering of MP. You will know who I am. I'll be the guy
with the baseball bat in his hands. I'll FILL you in on why we call this the
    JAM.

Okay, I feel much better now. Sorry to post to a dead thread, but I just had
    to.

Would anyone going to the Philly show tonight *please* e-mail me by 5, or
whenever you're leaving. Much as I'm looking forward to seeing the show
anyway, alone or not, it would be cool to have some ppl to hang with. If
ya don't have time to mail me, look for me at the show: I'll be the tall
gawky looking kid with short hair, black jeans, a Pantera tee and a
silver/black shirt on over that. Any kind of gathering planned?

Re: Derek, I've had 2 experiences with the guy, one was over the phone, the
other thru e-mail. Around January of '97, Mr. Sherinian was offering
private keyboard and guitar lessons in the LI/NYC area. I saw the ad in
the Long Island Ear and didn't think twice, even though I wasn't sure how
good a guitarist he was or what he'd have to offer my playing. Anyway, I
talked to him one or two times, very briefly, and we tried to set up a
lesson in February. The night before I alled him DT had played one of
their "Fix for '96" shows on LI, and I asked him how it went. He was
pretty easy to talk to and very polite. Unfortunately, something came up
which made me *have* to back out of the lesson . . . I left a message on
his machine explaining this, and that was the end of that. Then, about a
month ago, I sent an e-mail to both him and MP, requesting anything they
might have to offer, if they had the time, to a DT research paper. Derek
responded in one line, saying he'd do what he could. I have since sent him
three other brief e-mails and he has responded to each. He didn't have to.
So as far as I'm concerned, he's generally a cool guy. Josh, I'm sure you
must have caught him at a bad time.

How I got into DT: July, 1995. Finger's Metal Shop. WBAB. Long Island.
A Mind Beside Itself, in its entirety. My jaw dropped. I ordered Awake.
Around the time it arrived, ACOS was released. Once again, Fingers played
it in its entirety. I taped it, listened to it twice more, and ran to the
store to buy the EP. I was hopelessly hooked. The rest, as they say, is
    history.

I just received LTE about 2 days ago and I absolutely love it! And to
answer Rob's question, yes, I kind of wish FII would have taken a turn
towards LTE. Nevertheless, I love FII.

And yes, I kind of prefer Rudess over Sherinian. Being a guitar player,
I originally thought it was cool that DS was so influenced by other
guitarists, but after listening to FII I've decided that the keyboard
doesn't contrast the guitar enough. Sure it can be cool for the keyboard
to sound like a guitar when it's doubling a guitar part (especially
rhythm) but you take a song like Trial of Tears. At the end of the
wonderful guitar solo, even I am ready for something different, only to
get a keyboard solo that sounds like a guitar.

OTOH, I love the sounds Rudess uses on LTE. He seems to have a classical
influence that sounds wonderful. I do like Derek's playing however.

BTW, here's how the order in which I rate DT's albums, starting from my
    favorite going to least favorite.

    1. Images & Words
    2. Falling Into Infinity
    3. Awake
    4. WDADU

I had trouble including ACOS in the list because, the song ACOS is one
of my favorite DT songs, but I don't care much for listening to the
covers. I like the song ACOS enough to rate it up with I&W, but the
    covers brings the album downhill.

Okay...I'm now enlightened. I got LTE about 16 hours ago. I bought the
            thing
near my cousin's house about eighty miles from me. Yeah, I paid too
            much.
Probably could have gotten it cheaper through mail order/the
            www/whatever.
Do I regret it? Hell no!!! TMW kicks butt. I can't get enough of this
            CD.
Kindred Spirits is my favorite so far. Woo-Hoo!!!!

Mike Portnoy, if you're listening, GREAT JOB!!! Please relay the kudos
            to
Messrs. Rudess, Levin, and Petrucci. A+!!!

Okay, jammers. Just wondering if there are any jammers that would have
            preferred
to hear the playing on FII go more in the direction of LTE. I think
            that there are
some who would have liked to hear Rudess as the new DT keys guy. Just
wondering what you think. Personally, I love FII. I give it an A now.
            There's
some stuff that I don't really dig as much (JLMB) , but I'm getting into
it more. I like that stuff more and more. Back to the aging of FII
thread... I would have given it a B- when I first heard it. I was
definitely trying like hell to like it better considering the flooring I
had when I heard ACOS and when I finally appreciated Awake and really
got into DT, which brings me to another thread, one that's not quite as
            old.

As for the Serioussi fiasco, I was under the impression
that DT was the band members' outlet for generating
income (not a bad thing, mind you), whereas the "project"
music was more an artistic output of "pure" ideas.
The DT material, while artistically sound, is much
more adulterated than, say, LTE. I am not going to
begrudge them that right, especially since all this
"selling out" has not resulted in many records selling
    out, you know?

    Hello guys! (and Lisa *g*)

Here`s a question for ya. I may not be the greatest musical mastermind,
but I don`t consider myself a musical idiot either. What I don`t get
is the fact that nobody here seems to like "You Not Me". Okay, it may
not be the most progressive song ever and I agree DT wrote dozens of
better songs, but I still kinda like it. I has this contemporary feel to
it, it`s kinda easygoing but still very original. I love the guitar solo
and sound. True, lyrics don`t tell a thing, but I`ve heard sillier
lyrics before and was still able to like the song. Is it the fact that
the song was rearranged by a hitmaker? That doesn`t bother me at all, in
fact I do think the song is much more compact now.
The funny thing is, that if I want to "convert" someone into a dreamer,
I show them this song first (especially if they`r into alternative or
grunge) and they gradually get to like even the most progressive stuff.
If I show them the heavy stuff from Awake they just go "yeah, yeah, what
    else is new".
This might have been discussed before and I missed it, but the bottom
line is that all I see here is bitching about this song and I can`t
figure it out. Please enlighten me :)
I`m sorry if I`m warming up ol` forgotten discussions.

    Jam on!

Hi there, me again, with one more of my concert comments. =)

I went to see Yes yesterday night, and I won't be able to avoid the
comparisson with Malmsteen's concert last Tuesday.
First of all, the sound was PERFECT, almost flawless (except for the
first two or three songs, when Steve Howe was having some trouble with
his guitar). Every instrument could be heard clearly, I think every band
should hame some classes on equalizations with the guys there. :)

After that, there's the man, Steve Howe. After the 5th song they were
playing (ah, don't ask me about names of songs they played, I can only
name two or three of them :) ), Steve stood alone on the stage, with an
acoustic. What can I say, my jawbone dropped to the ground, and didn't
come back for the rest of the night. The guy is simply incredible!!! I
think I never saw something like that. He even played a COOOOOOL song
from Chet Atkins, besides lots of other amazing things. It was just too
    good to describe with words.
Now, for the Malmsteen comment... the only thing I think is that Mr.
YJM should run and have some classes on guitar playing with Mr. Howe.
Perhaps that way he realizes that playing harmonic minor scales
shredding up and down the neck (even with acoustics, it's amazing how he
can sound exact the same with any string instrument he puts his hands
on) at light speed is NOT the only thing that makes you an awesome
    guitarist.

The show (the Yes' one :) ) was very good, and the audience was much
more into their sound than in Tuesday with Malmsteen. Everybody singing
together, clapping hands, jumping and dancing around, and all that
    stuff. Neat. :)
The only sucky thing was a guy by my side that, in every note the bass
palyer would play, he would turn around and scream LOUD how the bass
player was good and how he worshipped him. Idiot. :-)

Another thing I was thinking is "what makes these old bands sound
soooooooooo good, and what lacks in the new bands to make they sound as
    cool as them". :-)
I've come to a veredict: the "kitchen" (that's as we call the bass &
drums here in Brazil. :-) ). Two perfect examples are Yes and Deep
Purple. Both drummers are amazing (Ian Paice is awesome), and both bass
players are very good too, and that makes the rhythms of these bands so
    catchy. I love that. :-)

Sorry for the long post on NDTC, but, wtf. :-)

I've only met Derek once, and briefly, on the Awake tour, but he was just as cool as anyone else in the band. That was the day I tried to have a conversation with Myung, but realized that I had nothing to say (mental block), really, so it sort of went "Great show, man." "Thanks."

Anyways, it's my experience that assholes in real life are even bigger assholes in e-mail, and that doesn't hold for Derek. He's responded to every e-mail I've sent him, and always given me some new info to digest. The dude is cool as hell.

Incidentally, since no one took my JLMB quiz (save one) the answer is: The scale that the unison line in JLMB is in, is Lydian Dominant. 1, 2, 3, #4, 4, 6, b7. I believe it's the Lydian (4th) mode of Melodic minor.

As I've thought more on the idea of DT "selling out" I was reminded of how Steve Vai once worked with both David Lee Roth and Whitesnake and made millions of dollars. As a result, he's now able to put out the kind of music that he likes (which is not mainstream) and make a career out of it.

Another guitarist who has done this is Richie Kotzen (one of my favorites). He briefly played for the band Poison and I'm sure that was a high paying gig. As a result, he can now make a career of making non-mainstream music and maintain his musical integrity.

I have no problem with DT temporarily "selling-out" in order to be able to have a lifelong career of making the music that we hard-core fans love and expect out of them.

I think it's time for a blindness jammer faq. There are two of us. Matt is the other blind jammer, and I understand he is a guitar player. I am a keyboard player. Now, I can't necessarily speak for Matt B., but I run a regular computer, just like everybody else. The only difference between my win95 machine and yours is that my computer has an add-in board that handles text to speech. Software handles all the functions of the board. Whatever appears on my screen is read by the speech engine in my computer via that add-in board. Now, windows95 is a bit of a pain in the ass to navigate with speech, but we somehow do it, although I still love DOS and my shell account.

Atlantic "sucks as a label?" What exactly do you mean?

I have both the Tall Stories album and the Tyketto album w/ Steve. Yes, he is a fine singer, especially live. But to me, Perry IS Journey. I know he's not an original member, but his voice is so unique you can always tell it's him. Journey was nothing before him and while they might do well with Steve, they're not going to be nearly as successful as they were with Perry. Hell, they're not even going to be as successful as they were with Trial By Fire. I personally am not going to by the new album until I've heard the whole thing first, whereas if Perry had remained in the band I would have bought it blind without any hesitation. But that's just me. I'm not looking for them to fail. I'm just not going to be surprised when they do.

In other 70s arena rock news, Tommy Shaw of Styx/ Damn Yankees is currently on that VH-1 game show "My Generation." He's not doing to badly.

As for Derek, I've only met him once and it was very brief. It was just after the Poughkeepsie show of the Fix '96 tour. He came out and hung out with the fans for a bit. He asked what we thought of the show and which of the new songs we liked best. I was quick to voice my appreciation of TAMP. Someone mentioned LiTS and his face lit up. Apparently he had a big hand in writing that one. Anyway, he was being swarmed with fans, so me and D-man took that as our cue to leave. But my impression of Derek is that he is a great guy, a professional musician, and just as big of a DT fan as anyone on this list (with the possible exception of Mr. Portnoy). Richie
