Okay all Tori fans here on the list,

I picked up LE not long ago, loved it, and was considering getting her
other albums - BFP and UTP. I've heard mixed opinions about these
    albums, should I get them?

Right now, I can pick up both of them for a relatively cheap price at
local 2nd hand CD store, so now would be an opportune time :)

Also, can anyone give me any insight towards the artist Sarah McLaughlin
(sp?). She is one the few artists I hear mention of on the Jam and can
easily obtain at any local record store. What
influences/similarities/styles could describe her music? What albums to
    check out? thanks..

How I got into DT; (I just gotta throw my $100.78 worth in here)

A friend of mine saw a JP article in a 94 issue of Guitar World and
thought he sounded like a pretty cool guitarist and therefore decided to
check out "an album from JP's band...". Since GW had a review of AWAKE
in the back, he decided to order AWAKE via his local record store - the
poor bastard waited about a year to get the CD in (don't ask me why),
anyway when he finally got it (in late 95), he listened to it, didn't
care for it because of the vocals and pretty much threw it to one side.

A few months later, this friend just happened to show AWAKE another
friend of mine and by chance, he and found 'Scarred' a rather appealing
song. He borrowed the album and within no time at all he was hooked.

So this friend gives me a listen to AWAKE for the first time. I hated
it. Since I was listening to bands like Soundgarden, Live, Cypress Hill,
Stone Temple Pilots at the time, DT didn't run to smoothly with what I
was used to hearing in music, so I didn't give it much attention.

Anyway, this friend kept on listening to DT repeatedly whenever I was
around and slowly I came to find parts of their music rather intriguing.
"Wow, they do different time signatures, that's really cool!"...."Hey,
this has got pretty cool atmosphere, I like the keyboards"...."The
guitarist is pretty good, isn't he. Drummer too".

So I got a tape of AWAKE and within 3 - 4 days of solid listening, I was
hooked and haven't looked back. My Cypress Hill CDs have done nothing
but collect dust and my Soundgarden and STP CDs have taken a permanent
backseat to Angra, Symphony X, Superior, Fates Warning, Stratovarius,
Eldritch, Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Enchant, Rush, Queensryche.
    Shadow Gallery, Lemur Voice.

Pretty pointless thread this one, but I'll make it my duty to keep it
    going....

The sample from Cypress Hill's 'Hits From the Bong' is from 'Son Of A
Preacher Man' by ??. Even though I used to love Cypress Hill <trying to
hold down the hurl>, everytime I hear the intro to this song, cause they
sound almost indentical, I'm not sure which song it's gonna be - I just
pray that it's 'Son Of A Preacher Man'. Not that I love that song, but
    it's better than CH anyday...

I often get the same confusion with the Vanilla Ice/Queen thing...

Hi. Remember me? Houston 'jammer? Yup, that's me. What the FUCK is
wrong with the jam? I've spent the better part of 3 days catching up on,
lesse, 5 days' worth of posts! Now, I wouldn't be upset except some
things have happened that are inexcusable.

1.) Why didn't ANYONE offer Damon a ride? See, there are dozens, nay,
scores more jammers in the Northeast than where I live. I would GLADLY
give a jammer a ride to the show, let them crash at my place, buy them
dinner, etc. if they really needed it. Why couldn't ANYONE offer a
fellow jammer, blind or not, a ride to a DT show?

2.) Since when has posting private e-mail to a mailing list become
acceptable? Forgive me if i'm out of the loop, but I thought PRIVATE
mail is PRIVATE unless both parties agree to divulge said e-mail. But
since I have a sneaking suspicion that Serioussi has ditched the jam,
it's pointless for me to bitch.

3.) I thought there was a limit as to how many lines a single post can
take up. In one ytsejam alone, 3 posts took up 78% of the jam. If it
gets to the point where each person is refuting everything another person
is saying, it's going to take up the entire jam. (OK, not really, but
you get my point.) Going back to point #2, you can take it to private
    e-mail, y'know.

4.) How come there have been VERY few reviews of the recent shows? I
don't mean spoilers and setlists, I just mean experiences (like the 300
lb. dude and how Derek acts). Personally, I thought Derek was a pretty
cool guy, but I had to practically shove my FII liner in his face to get
him to sign it. Then he promptly ducked into the tour bus with a blonde
woman. *sigh* The curse of the brunette struck again.

I really don't mean to dog on the 'jam. I'd just like to see people be a
little more reasonable, kind to fellow 'jammers, and above all, talk
about what DT is doing on the tour so that those of us unfortunate enough
not to be there can feel like we're there.

    >>Look at how they're currently pushing "The Verve" and "Ben Folds Five". The
record companies are throwing millions behind these guys, and they
will probably get their money back, but they most likely won't create
long lasting music (or artists). It's very likely that no one will
know who these guys are in 2 years.<<

sorry, i have to take issue with ben folds five being included in this
statement. i cant think of a more innovative band to come out recently (a
good pop <gasp!> band with a piano at the center, and with no guitar). they
are also one of the best bands ive seen live. i will agree that radio is
totally overplaying their song "brick" which really pisses me off considering
that almost all of any of their albums is nothing like that song.

i am way more annoyed by bands such as Third Eye Blind, Matchbox 20, all the
ska wannabe bands, etc. i think if youre going to talk about bands without
longevity, those are the bands i would point out. i dont hear anything
    original in their stuff.

In regards to Seroussi's most recent remarks...

Was MP's argument with the promoter in the UK to do an LTE/DT/Platypus Show
a sign of selling out too? James is sick can't do a show and these guys just
want to play. I hope they will get to do a show like that one day.
This is music. There are masses. DT is evolving, moving forward in my
opinion. If DT does not evolve, extinction. They put there heart into
making records that hopefully please you, their fans. Fans however are fickle
and often question why they cant make the same album over and over and over.
Numerous VH 1/2/3 heated discussions come to mind.
Just because you gain the respect of the critics and have a sold fan base
does not guarantee success. King's X is a great example. A lot of respect
and a damn fine 6 album catalog to show for it. But inevitably, they were
dropped from the Atlantic roster (Not to mention the fact Atlantic sucks as a
label too....How Savatage survived as long as they did on Atlantic I will
never know.) Now King's X is back to a small label (Metal Blade) to continue
to make music. Making music and trying to make money as well.

In other NDTC, This new singer for Journey, Steve Augeri, was not only the
frontman for Tall Stories, but also was most recently singing for Tyketto. He
has a fine voice and should do well in his new position with Journey. It's
the big time now, until Journey decide to reunite again ala Motley Crue.
It could last one album, but it will be a fun one album.

    back to the shadows

    Glenn

<< I'd like to know if Derek has a bad reputation in general or if we just

personal Derek stories - the good :-) the bad :-( and the ugly :-o
(Well, not TOO personal of course.) >>

I have had two brief encounters with Mr. Sherinian, and he was as nice as I
would expect someone to be to a total stranger.

The first was at the Jaxx show in January, he came out after the show and went
to the bar to get a drink. I approached him, our eyes met, he ran to
me.............(oops, sorry, that's another story ;~). Anyway, I just told
him it was a great show, he shook my hand, and thanked me for saying so, and
that was it. I didn't expect any more or less. Fine.

The second was at Daytona's just 3 days ago. I was hanging with some other
fans at the front door to the club, and we saw Mr. Sherinian come out from the
back, and go across the street to get some coffee(I think). When he was
walking back, I (being the shy cat that I am) just asked him(from across the
street, so maybe I yelled a bit) if he had a minute, he waved, so I walked
across the street, introduced myself (as Kezcom. "I'm such an idiot", I
thought), and he recognized me from the nickname and from the Jaxx show. He
signed my DTIFC CD booklet, signed some other people's stuff, and went back to
the bus. I couldn't have been more pleased.

Now, granted, he may not be as outgoing and buddyish as Mr. Portnoy, but
neither is anyone else that I've EVER met.

That's my experience. To steal a quote, "your mileage may vary".

Good luck, and thanks AGAIN to Mads for the advice.
Basically, just don't be an idiot.

Here is my story, as told to Nicole a while back(It's okay to post MY OWN e-
    mail to the list, right?):

<<Well, to make a long story short, I had a best friend(basically since birth)
who I had grown up with, musically and otherwise. We were both into Rush,
Scorpions, Triumph, and other stuff that wasn't necessarily mainstream, and we
trusted each others' musical taste. In our mid 20's, we had sort of grown
apart for a little while(me getting married had a little to do with that), and
then he developed a brain tumor. I hadn't seen him for about a year when I
found out about it(he had just had the operation), and went to visit him at
the hospital. We quickly renewed our friendship and became as close as
ever(you know this can't end happily).
Anyway, about a year and a half later(Summer,1992) we were in a Kemp Mill
Records(RIP) and he told me about this CD that he had bought a few days
earlier, Images and Words by Dream Theater. He had only listened to it a
couple of times, but said that, so far, he would highly recommend it. I
bought it, notes unheard, and it didn't leave my CD player for a long time
    after that.
In January, '93, we went together to see DT at The Bayou in Washington,
D.C., and I was permanently hooked. They played I&W in its entirety, note for
note, beat for beat, and I was blown away! I knew then that these guys were
    special.
Well, as hinted at, my friend's tumor returned, and he died about 3 months
later. The whole I&W CD took on a new meaning for me(Another Day, Take the
Time, Learning to Live), and the words play in my head to this day.

I thought that my obsession with the band may have been attributable to my
emotional state at the time, because I bought Awake, and didn't really care
for it right away. I bought ACOS as soon as it came out, and I was re-hooked
for good. Now I see that there are many others like me who are semi-obsessed
    with DT, also.

Sorry for the long sob story :~( Guess it wasn't so short after all :~)>>

Addendum: Probably why I like and identify with TAMP, huh?

That's it, for what it's worth.
    Kez

P.S. Nicole, are you ready for DT in Texas? Enjoy!

I'd have to agree....and this is coming from a die hard metal fan too.
The keyboardist in my band was playing some Ben Folds Five the other day
for me. The music was friggin' FUNNY! Listen to the lyrics :) As for
talent, they had a really good pianist. I mean REALLY good. Very jazzy.

Well, that's my take on that band. Now let's talk some metal :) Anyone
(besides Mape :) got the new Stratovarius live 2 CD set? I frigging love
this stuff! I need to know, though...what drugs are being used by the
drummer, and where can I get some. He's the fastest, most consistent, and
most solid double-bass drummer I've ever heard. Sure, guys like Lombardo,
Portnoy, and Menza can do it as fast if not faster, but the guy from Strato
does it in EVERY song, from beginning to end, and THEN does a drum solo,
    never once really stopping :)

He's a BADASS. You hear me? BAD ASS.

    Laterz all,

    Me:

So James, what kind of food are you feeding your caribou?

    James:

Well I've been feeding them caribou chow, eh.

    Me:

What? How could you feed them that corporate slop! Maybe you should get a
second job (say working at Taco Bell (can't you just see that, "Would you
like a GoooooooOOOOOOrdiIIIIIIIItooooo")) so you can afford to feed them
    better food!

James: Jeez, my caribou are very happy and well fed. Caribou Chow is
preferred by 4 out of 5 veterinarians you know.

    Me:

Don't give me the 4 out of 5 crap! My caribou prefer Science Diet and
therefore you should feed your caribou Science Diet! If you don't do what
I want I shall call the ASPCA on you!

    James:

/me hands V_Clortho a valium. Chill out dude they are just caribou eh.

    end of correspondence.

Am I wrong or is JLB just being a jerk. He never answered why he used
Caribou Chow or why he isn't using the caribou food of my choice. Let's
all call PETA and let them know about the injustice that is JLB's caribou
    farm!!!

To be honest, I can't resist this one.

In '89 I read in the English magazine
Metal forces about a band that was a
    mix between Rush, and Kansas.

I got the CD and that was it.
Of course I was REALY blown

    was released.

This is how I remember it.

    Hey folks--

Just temporarily subscribed since I've got some free time.

ANyways, me and my friend went to the Irving Plaza show tonight in the city and now my friend wants to go to the Philly show. Can anyone tell me if they sold out yet? Thanks.

    Yesterday, I wrote...

I'd like to thank those of you who have contributed to this thread. Your responses were exactly what I was looking for (aren't these discussion groups great?). I'm pleased that 90% of the comments about Derek have been positive.

For those who are curious, the negative impression that Derek made in Madison began almost immediately after he entered the building when he started checking and tweaking his gear. He was not satisfied with the quality of the monitor provided for him by the local sound company. He immediately launched into a loud tantrum of cruel sarcasm and insults about it, causing the entire room to go awkwardly silent. He seemed to be going out of his way to embarrass the local sound tech (who he had not been introduced to yet) and came off as a spoiled brat. Anyway, after that, I kept my distance from him. I'm sure that he's a pretty cool guy most of the time but you know what they say about first impressions :-)

Thanks again, Josh Becker josh@beyondthemirror.com http://www.beyondthemirror.com
