If there are any newbies to the jam, you gotta go to dr. mosh's site,
don't have the url handy, but I am sure you will hear from him soon
enough, and read the rules for the ytsejam drinking game. And any vets,
you should go there and read it as well. Brings back lots of memories,
especially since I was mentioned twice in the damn thing. Hey, anybody
want to make the attempt to update it? I know a few things that have come
true that we never thought possible. For instance, MP posting to the jam,
I wonder if he's seen this yet. Technically, the game could use some
updating. BTW, we are all still in shock over Al sending Pat the tapes,
aren't we? What do you say, Mosh. Time to update the ytsedrinking game?

So... instead of writing two sequential one line letters to the listserv, now you get to write one medium length letter to the jam, wait for a response that you probably won't get, and then you get to write a one line letter... or two if no one helped you. Lazy, or just not too quick? :)

    > Subject: Re: LedZep ripoff

I personally don't mind it. The Stayin Alive rip actually sounds cool to me. The Sting one only sucks because the lyrics are LAME as hell, IMO. Haven't heard Kashmir (the PD version). I'm not a rap fan... but I don't mind this stuff, as long as he's giving credit where credit is due, and clearly PD is.

None of us want you to play with your weenie in our cars, that's all. You think we don't know what causes blindness? Seriously now... please focus your hatred upon the jammers in your area. You're on the east coast, right? Then say "I hate you east coast jammers." I agree with you, that it IS a fucking sick ass disgrace that people couldn't put in the extra effort to help you hit the show... I am really shocked that no one decided to stand up and help you out. That would not happen in the Chicago area, nor do I believe for a second that it would happen in the Cali or Texas areas. It's a damn shame, and I really am disturbed that you were left out like that.

I'm of the minority opinion that it sort of IS his own music. I mean, I bet at least half of you think of DT when you hear Perfect Strangers, and the other half of you are still thinking about Balky and Cousin Larry. I think QR when I hear Scarborough Fair. I think PD changes the lyrics every time and everything. I think "I'll be missing you" is lame, because he didn't change the lyrics enough to make sense, and because that song is about a stalker, not love or longing.

Sort of the DiMeola/McLaughlin/DeLucia musical vein, with a bit more tribal influence. Not a big fan, but I dig em somewhat. > Strunz and Farah's music comes from Latin America and the Middle East, > the old world flamenco and the new world of jazz improvisation, > traditional classical guitars and electric bass. As Adrian Belew says,

It's more Flamenco guitar than classical. And I really hesitate to call it jazz. But it's certainly extremely talented and infectious music.

    > This mp3 sample is in mono and could be a bit better quality, but still > this isn't bad. It's a good introduction to these musicians (Strunz-right > channel, Farah-left).

One of those special "Stereo Mono" MP3s? > 3. Peruvian Skies - prog Not really.

    > 5. Burning my Soul - prog Not really at all.

    > 9. Just Let Me Breathe - prog Borderline.

This is the problem inherent to classifying music. People develop these necessary characteristics to defend the music by, when in fact, the characteristics may not be the key. If you set up standards, and then something comes up that doesn't meet the standard, you have to admit it's not prog, even when you think it is. On the other hand, if you just say "this is Dream Theater, so it's prog" then you're sort of affirming the consequent. I classify music for the purpose of describing it to someone. Not so that I can say what I'll like or dislike. To me, the genre is meaningless... it's all about what the music does for me. This is why I stopped running a prog metal page... my interests go so far beyond prog metal, and I don't really like having to say something's prog or not... because sometimes there are borderlines, at which people argue, and it's such a complete waste of time to get into with people... > > 5) 5's gone. there is no 5. Nononononono. I told you, the word "5" doesn't appear anywhere in the actual quote. You have to replace all the "5"s with the name of a character from the movie. (Say it out loud, that might help.)

    And it's not sci-fi. It's drama. -d

Forgive me if this has been answered already, but I'm way behind on jams all the sudden.

My brother and I are making the trip to SF for the Saturday concert. I need to know if and where the little ytsefest is taking place beforehand, and especially I need to know if there's a cheap motel anywhere in the area. Any other information that's prudent to the situation would also be appreciated. I look forward to meeting some of the bay area jammers. Private email please, as I'm not sure if I'll be caught up by Saturday.

I find "Peruvian Skies" and "Burning My Soul" very mainstream. To label those two as prog is a stretch. Granted there are some progressive elements (Derek's solo in BMS is far from mainstream) but those two tracks are pretty straightforward hard rock. I would consider Lie or The Mirror more progressive then those two.

Id say its *very* latin jazz oriented...being brough up on latin jazz ( my dad's a big fan ) i like s&F a lot. Theyre blazing fast fingerstyle players.. and they always IMO sound interesting, as opossed to many flamenco guitarrist which IMO always their solos sound too similar. And the middle eastern flavor farah brings is very unique... now im gonna whip out my S&F live cd again!...

Wow, you're a stupid fuck, aren't you? Why do so many people assume that just because this is an Internet mailing list, none of us know each other personally? I consider myself lucky to have Damon as a personal friend. If I lived anywhere near him, I would have driven him to Irving Plaza, Birch Hill, and the Philly show. (As a matter of fact, even though I *don't* live anywhere near him, if I had driven up from VA to see the shows, I would have gone and gotten him. Fucking finals.) Damon and I have known each other for quite some time (apparently, a great deal longer than you've been on the list), and I know for a fact that he's cool with me busting on his sightlessness. If I weren't absolutely sure that it doesn't bother him, I wouldn't do it.

    > a volenteer, and I concider myself a worthy opponent to the "O great > digital person" jsut too friggin bad we are so far apart..

Ooh. The chicks must love that macho facade.

I didn't mess with Damon's disability. He has overcome it in a manner that inspires me to fight my own battles. You, on the other hand, clearly need to get a grip on your own emotional disabilities.

    > Oh yea.. I missed something somewhere.. Why is this Dream Theater related?

It isn't. Why are you perpetuating the thread?

Next time you're going to make a character judgment about someone based on one e-mail message taken out of context, think twice. A wiser man would have attempted to gather more evidence before launching an attack like that.

I had hoped to have the chance to talk to him when he was done - but after he had gone ballistic over his monitor I chickened out. By the way, yesterday I talked with two other people who were there and they remembered the incident pretty much the same way I did.

Note: I'm not claiming that I'm not a dork, just that it wouldn't have had anything to do with Derek's behavior :-)
