    This was the best of the 3 DT shows I've seen (Fix for '96 at The Chance
    12/14/96, and FII at Toad's Place 10/25/97 were the other two). Not only
    was the set list awesome, it was very homogenous with lots of little
    suprises sprinkled throughout. I only wish that I had been the one to
    drum with MP! Anyway, at the risk of offending some purists, I'm
    wondering if anyone has a recording or video of this show? I saw someone
    standing backstage left with a video camera, but I'm assuming that it
    was for MP's personal bootleg collection. Anyway, great show, killer
    cover medley, and the best crowd interaction I've seen yet! DT just
    keeps getting better! BTW, the person screaming at Full On The Mouth may
    have been me (along with everyone else), they were good, actually quite
    tight, but not what you would want opening for DT.

    Yeah,and they often show it in their classy-but-way-shitty videos.
    They make their videos like, i dunno, like they want to show off how rich
    they are getting, and to put to shame the other rappers videos.
    It s like a contest.

    I cant stand those fucking videos, hate them. They must cost a fortune
    though.

    Nice meeting you too Shawn. Man, you got backstage passes!! I guess I
    should have looked to go to the front row with you guys.

    Definitely an excellent show. I was up on the balconey next to a roped
    off section for VIP's. Turns out that some of Petrucci's and Portnoy's
    family showed up to the concert. Even got to see his little daughter up
    there as well. So cute with those little ear plugs.....

    Highlights:

    1) They actually played Speak To Me!
    2) Petrucci going crazy during a solo and James and Mike carrying him
    away!
    3) Mike playing part of Eruption on Petrucci's guitar.
    4) Derek the amazing rock star.....
    5) James' new do and stache

    Does anybody know that little interlude they played during Metropolis or
    was that some kind of Jam.

    Well, the show definitely got me through another year. Cool meeting
    everybody there.

    Sometimes they both use picks, sometimes they're both fingerstyle.
    They play gut string, nylon string, and steel string. Depends on the
    song. Farah picks more often than Strunz does, and plays more of a
    support role.

    My favorite album is Guitarras, because it's the most traditional. My
    second favorite studio album is Mosaico, their first. It's quite diverse,
    and includes great Indian violin, and Omar Khayimsomethingorother
    as a guest third guitar player on one song. Really, anything you get
    will be good, though Misterio is only for when you're in a really
    relaxed mood.

            First off, I just want to say that this weekend's posts (I
            don't have e-mail access over the weekend) were possibly the
            best collection of posts I have seen in a while, both DT and
            non-DT. I wish there were more reviews, but it was awesome.

            I think that the fact that uit's been raining for 13 days
            straight here on the East Coast is reasoning behind some of
            the venomous posts on here (venomous but hilarious), but I
            could be wrong. Ok, here I go:

            1. Ben Folds - great group, incredible live, and spent a LOT
            of time on the indie, small-club scene before "Brick". They
            definitely should not be lumped in with the other "mainstream"
            bands mentioned with them (MB20 Third Eye, etc.) - I'm
            acutally going to see them twice in a span of a week (Y-100
            Festival, Dave MAtthews), and I can't wait.

            2. Puff Daddy - I hate him - everyone kisses his ass, there's
            MUCH talk about his involvement in B.I.G.'s murder (that he
            ordered the hit). He takes the songs, and basically talks over
            new lyrics to the entire song. I don't particularly like it, or
            think it takes that much talent, but that's me. This is not
            representative of all rap, though. I'm an East Coast fan
            myself, but there's a lot of rap that I enjoy (PE, Beasties,
            Fugees, Wyclef, Tribe Called Quest and De LA Soul, with some
            Busta Rhymes) -- anyway, the "Staying Alive" song really
            doesn't compare to Puff Daddy because basically they rap over
            the bassline to Staying Alive (with beats mixed in) along with
            a 2-second sample here and there of the "staying alive" chorus.
            A lot different than what Puff does.

            D-Man also brought up the "Under Pressure" Vanilla Ice thing.
            This again is only the bassline (a 2-3-second sample of it), and
            I personally don't think it goes to the extent that Puff Daddy
            does it. Sampling is a big part of a lot of rap, but it's used
            as a foundation, and usually is accompanied by original lyrics,
            added beats, etc. It's a hazy area to talk about. Some
            people do it tastefully (IMHO) as an "enahncement" to they're
            ideas and lyrics, while others (esp. Puff) do it it what
            APPEARS to be a lazy example of lack of musical integrity, IMO.

            3.) Can someone give a description of the DT programs that they
            were selling - contents, price, etc.? I'm really interested in
            getting one of these...........

    Tell me how. I really wanna know. I've been wanting to do a remix of
    Sylvian's "Upon this Earth" and the last song on Lamb's album...both are
    quite similar...but I don't want to do it in Digitracker because I HATE
    tracking software (even though it was all I had on my Amiga).

    One interesting thing about this Puff Daddy thread: when he did his "I'll be Missing You" or whatever the ripuff-version (heheh) of "Every Breath You Take" is called, he asked Sting if he could do it and Sting said OK. The funny thing is, the part of the song that they're actually using from the original recording is the guitar riff, and nobody asked Andy Summers about it. Andy said he was very pissed for not being contacted, but he wasn't gonna sue or anything cuz he figured it would be more trouble than it's worth. And Andy did not like the Puff Daddy version...

    OK, here we go-- As for that dick who posted his e-mail exchange with MP and started suggesting to MP better ways for MP to live his life, well...not much to say here. Pretty obvious he was wanting a response from MP, but he probably came closer to making Mike wish he'd never posted his e-mail addy on the friggin' jam, and had never posted here to begin with.

    As for the DT sellout/Metallica similarities/whatever thread, I have to first say that I really like Dream Theater and Metallica's latest albums, so I really don't care whether anyone has sold out or not. I couldn't give a crap about motives if I like the music. No band has ever pledged to me that they'll only make music I like; therefore, if a band makes music I don't like, I have no grounds to complain and say, "they should've done this/they sold out/they should've made the record *I* wanted them to make..."; all I can do is not by it. On the other hand, if a band comes out with something I do like, I feel fortunate to be able to come along for the ride. However, looking at it from a common sense point of view, it seems to me that albums with a few radio-hit-songs and the rest being songs of a band's "usual style" are more likely to have "sellout intentions" than albums that show a common stylistic thread throughout. For example, look at DT and Megadeth's latest albums. They each have a few radio-friendly-type-songs, and the others are in a different direction. This, to me, looks like they wrote a few songs to get radio exposure and album sales, while the rest of the album contains the style of songs they really prefer. Whereas Metallica's "direction change" or whatever you want to call it, extends throughout their entire albums. That's why I think Metallica really is playing what they want, like the guy mentioned on here earlier who said they're a bad choice to compare to DT. I mean, if I wanted to "become popular" and "sell more albums", I would gear maybe 4 or 5 songs toward radio or eMpTyV, but the rest would be what I wanted to play. That's why the "Metallica sold out" argument has never entirely made sense to me. I honestly don't think any band would write and record an entire album of material they hate. If a band is playing the music they *really* want to play, it is NOT selling out. Period. Therefore, if Metallica is playing groove metal "just to sell albums," they must secretly wish they were still playing thrash, right? If they really still wanted to play thrash, wouldn't they record 4 or 5 "radio songs" and then have the rest of the album be thrashy? Common sense to me. No albums have over 4 or 5 songs released to radio or eMpTyV, if that many. Metallica had other influences besides the NWOBHM, you know. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple, Skynnrd, AC/DC, etc. are bands they've always said they listened to; they're really wearing the influence of those bands on their shoulders as of late, and it's easy to pick out elements of all those bands in their recent music. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm NOT saying DT or Megadeth sold out; I freakin' *love* FII and Cryptic Writings. My point is, the commercial songs on those albums seem more "forced" because they're different than the other stuff on the albums, whereas the Load twins contain singles relatively indicative of the general direction of their respective records. I'll never understand why people don't get the fact that all the members of Metallica were financially set for 20 lifetimes after the Justice album and tour. And after the Black, sweet bastard... Seems to me, according to common sense and recent 'jam logic, not having to worry about making money anymore=the freedom to record what you really want, right?

    As for the Puff Daddy thing, did you guys know that he wanted to do a version/remix/whatever they do of Megadeth's Trust? He apparently said something about it before even approaching Dave. Dave basically just laughed at him. Hail Mustaine!!!!!

    Not that this discussion is on Victor Wooten, but I must quickly comment on him. I saw him perform with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (he's a Flecktone, BTW) back in February and he was the first bassist I ever saw that actually made my jaw drop. Ya know the little neat thing Myung does during Metropolis? Well, Victor did stuff like this throughout the whole concert. Myung is the man, but I wish he would be more like Vic.

    ok, I agree that a remake doesnt have to sound like the original, in fact he can do as many remakes as he wants....I really dont care, he can relase a 10 CDs boxset of remakes and covers, what I dont understand is why did police had to include his version of roxanne in their new best of album, I mean, let puff daddy do his own records with covers but I dont like to listen to his songs in other people albums...I havent heard the kashimir version, I know it has tom morello on guitars, but I cant give my opinion on that song...I've only heard the police covers and I dont like them.

    Actually, I rather enjoyed Puff Daddy's performance on SNL. And here's why: I have connected to my TV a fairly cheap Aiwa mini-stereo system, which has a Karaoke feature. After picking up my jaw at what Jimmy Page was doing with the Puffster on stage, I quickly diverted the sound through my stereo and engaged the karoake. No vocals!! It was awesome. =) The little dweeb was jumping around and getting all into it, and he was almost completely inaudible. Unfortunately, much of the lead guitar was muted as well, but I was kind of getting into the small orchestra they had on the stage. It was like watching an instrumental Kashmir, and I kind of dug it...
