I ordered Lords of Sound a few weeks ago, and I got it in four days. Not bad considering they are in Singapore. Well, the reason why I don't think PS is prog is this. The end of the song sounds so much like Black album Metalica. Not that this is bad, but there is really nothing proggy to my ears about the solos or the song itself. in fact, I thought it would make a great single. Still do. It doesn't sound anything like Metropolis, TTT, or any of those songs. In fact, PMU is not really prog either. I guess I am still adapting to the idea that a prog song can be in 4/4 all the way through. Here's an idea. Who thinks that they can cut New Millennium into a radio single?

Ummmmmm, Original and Unique? Ummm, Rock n Electronica is NOTHING new. Lesse, how about Stabbing Westward, God Lives Underwater, White Zombie have all been doing this for a long time and alot better than FOTM. They weren't horrible, but if this is the genre they want to be in, they have some damn still competition.

K's Choice is definately a very cool band. Haven't had a chance to see them live yet though.

Don't worry about the moshing, because if it's anything like last time at HoB, there will be none. If people try, we shall have to kick their ass. Correct me if I'm wrong, but attempting to absorb the intracies of Myung's bass wizardry is complicated by having some asshole coming at you elbow-first at 20mph. IMHO, moshing of the usual brainless, full-contact variety simply has no place at a DT concert.

Generally it's a non-moshing crowd at the HoB... mostly more mature like folks... (as opposed to the word: OLD) that attends the functions at the HoP (House of Progressive).

You're on, Damon... (grin!) ..when I heard your challenge (^_^), I decided to take matters into my own hands. I went through and edited a little over 3 minutes off of NM, and came up with a song that's as radio-friendly as I can get it. Most of the cuts sound seamless, but some lack the shine of a professional studio. Cest la vie.
The finished product weighs in at a scant 4:42, and cuts 1x thru the New Millennium pre chorus, and the last time thru the I Got This Feeling chorus. It also cuts out a lot of the proggy stuff, but this is to be radio friendly, you understand!
It seems a little choppy (duh!), and I prolly could do better if I give it another go, but I wanted to get something out there in a timely fashion. Actually, I'm pretty proud of some of the more subtle aspects of the job I did, like integrating the beginning of the first verse with the beginning of that riff (the first time thru without the vocals, but with the cymbal crash). Anyways, enough about the obviously cool job I did (chuckle)...
..I'm encoding it to .mp3 now (128kbps, high-accuracy), and placing it on my web page:

To ease into this debate, let me say I agree completely with Damon. The 'Heavy Ending' (tm), not including the solos, is the best song Metallica never wrote. That's why I about died laughing when they put in a couple of bars of "Enter Sandman" last night! Does humor belong in music...?

This is where I start to disagree. While not John P.'s most spectacular solo, this solo displays a level of technical proficiency and the ability to "play for the song" far and above 99% of what is in the pop-hard-rock field.

Again, I disagree. The mellow first-half of the song gives us a beautiful, yet haunting melody, played (or sung) over top of a subtlely shifting rhythm. To go one step further, this subtlely shifting rhythm is not in 4/4, the yardstick of Prog (tm) you allude to later.
The over-driven end of the song is (again, in my opinion), the perfect resolution of the tension built by the mellow first-half. Can something be mellow and still create/build tension? I think this is proof-positive.

I agree, if you could just get radio stations to play it, lengthen people's attention spans to take in the whole picture, to appreciate the whole wild ride that is PS. I think the ending would win over a lot of standard hard rock listening people. But I think the ending is nothing without the the first half.

And I think that's great! I don't want another I&W. Progress, evolution, growth, whatever you want to call it. I'm glad that I&W isn't just a better-recorded WDADU, and that Awake isn't just I&W with 7-string guitars.

For a particular song to be 4/4 throughout, and be considered "prog", would be tough. But stack it up against the artist's body of work, and see where it fits.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I guess "prog"-rock for me is something of a rock-oriented nature, but typically showcasing more complicated song structure, instrumentation, performance. I also view an artist's body of work as a whole, not wishing to segregate individual songs as befitting of the artist or not...I either like them or I don't. PS is not my favorite song from FII, probably around #6.
While I'm pulling on my Asbestos undergarments, let me add that I'm not saying that Damon's wrong. It's his opinion. These are my opinions, and one of them happens to be that I find Damon's yardstick of Proginess to be a couple of inches short...
