So, if I've "excercised" many times enough, I won't be able to hear the
wounderful music of Dream Theater at all... and is that such a good idea?
I'd rather save my already damaged hearing for the presently released and
the forthcoming albums of DT (and other artists, as well)...
And, well, please don't laugh at me now - I've never seen DT live... not
even on VHS! (Doh!) <:-(
On the topic "Vai vs. Petrucci"... Whoa man... Deja-Vu!!!
I believe that I myself started off a discussion like this last week (or
was it...? Eeh...) - where I stated I though SV had more feeling into his
play than JP. I can't help I still feel that way, though.
Damn, this was a completely unnecessary post! Sorry Skadz! Please don't
unsub me!

In my mind at least, Vai seems to have a very distinct and idiosyncratic
style. I think he has taken the lydian mode and really made it his own.
Whenever I hear a lydian passage it kinda reminds me of Vai. Petrucci is
more of a traditional player and tends to solo in more common modes and
recently has moved towards a more bluesy phrasing where Vai sounds like an
alien. I'm not sure whether Petrucci has really got his own style yet (this
may not be a fair criticism), but to me his lead playing sounds like a
combination of Holdsworth, Morse, Di Meola and a few others while his rhythm
playing reminds me of Hetfield and Lifeson. I think he's own unique
personality is starting to emerge though. Just my opinion.

Rainer

Scarred Records' second Dream Theater release, "Spinning Years 2" has been
shipping like a madman for the past week or so! It features six of the best
double-disc DT bootlegs available (count it, 12 discs!!), all on a single
disc using the CD-quality MP3 format! This is an update from the original
"Spinning Years". It corrects the gaps between tracks, and completely
eliminates any warbling or swishy sounds that was characteristic of several
songs on the original release.
"SY2" features a full color liner *AND* a painted disc! It looks incredibly
cool. I've just received the disc printer, so any people who have already
received the unpainted SY2 discs will receive, for free, an additional
painted disc in the mail within the next week or so. How's that for
customer service? =) Not only that, but owners of the original "Spinning
Years" disc can obtain the update SY2 disc, which includes a painted disc
and new magazine-quality front liner, for a flat $5!
Now, if you want to hear several full-length song samples of this immense
disc, go to the Scarred Records homepage at:
http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236
Hear for yourself how awesome these MP3 discs can sound! Also available for
listening are several clips from my very limited edition Van Halen MP3 disc,
"Rat Salade", so have fun with those as well.
Also check out the bootleg listing on my site. You'll find it's probably
the most extensive listing of Rush and DT bootlegs out there, and most are
available for replication! With the arrival of the disc printer, I will
soon expand the bootleg replication service to include full-color liners and
disc prints, so keep an eye on the page for more info about that.
Sorry to keep rambling, but a lot's happened lately. =) Another new
section is the Specials area, which features not-so-hot bootlegs at way
cheap prices. This week's special is a Rush double-disc bootleg for $15.
Yup, $15 for two discs!
Thanks!

I think it comes from a situation if you get a gift hors,e it porbably has
bad teeth. Thus, don't look too hard, and accept the gift horse. If you
look too hard, you'll probably find something to complain about, but do
you really have a right, seeing as it's a gift horse and all? hehehe...

Well, fellow jammerz,
Last night proved to be one helluva memorable experience (just as all the
DT shows I've been to have been). I'll try not to rehash what Chris "I'll
get my own bootlegs" Ptacek, Matt "sideburns" Stanich and Derek Franz (BTW,
are you the long-lost brother to FOTM's drummer - geez you guys look a lot
alike!) already posted.
I hooked up with Mattymo and his bud Tom and we cruised down to Chicago.
Missed our exit, but eventually found the Vic - whew! Got a chance to hang
with a buncha jammerz - nice to see Chris Ptacek and his gf Margaret, as
well as Matt Stanich, the Geoff Tate look-alike guy (sorry I forgot your
name) and everyone else. Kinda funny - there was this one guy, who pretty
much waited by himself who kept on busting out joints right on the street!
Didn't seem like he was totally with it - someone told me that he earlier
that he had gone across the street to take a leak (in the parking lot) and
had a 40-ouncer. Crazy thing was, he was the first guy to play along with
MP during MP's solo (and he was pretty good, though he didn't catch on to
the "match what MP does" part of the solo).
Anway, it was pretty fun since myself, Mattymo and Tom got to see
soundcheck. Pretty much just went through LitS, PS and S2M. Before they
started soundcheck, I repeated my request to Mike that they at least play
the beginning of TOWHTSTS (ta-whats-its) - I had asked him the same thing
when they played Madison in November. As usual, it didn't happen during
the show, but during sound check all of the sudden Mike looked right at me
and busted out the drum beat for it (right after the mellow intro where the
drums kick in and the chunky guitar part starts)! Totally kewl! I think
John M even joined along, but Petrucci was playing something else so the
song fell apart. Nonetheless, it definitely made my day! Mike and Derek
practiced tossing a drum stick back and forth - Mike kept on telling Derek
to "catch the drum stick like a man" since he kept on dropping them (and he
looked like a sissy when doing it) - pretty funny - later on Mike literally
started throwing bananas at Derek instead of drum sticks. After sound
check was over, I took a picture of Mike standing next to his small kit and
we had a conversation about LTE, what happens after the tour, etc.
Kiddies, go see DT now, cuz I think its gonna be a while before DT will be
touring again after the tour with DP/ELP is over. Turns out there's
another little Petrucci on the way, so at least John will probably take
some time off. Mike sez he's already gotten a couple other offers for
other side projects, so there will be other things in the pipeline though.
Of course, during this time (while talking to Mike after soundcheck) JP
would start playing something on his guitar each time I'd try to ask Mike a
kweschun or when Mike tried to respond, so Mike finally told us he'd talk
to us later "(damn guitarists!!)" <----- quote from LTE's booklet
Finally, security told us we had to go wait outside since we didn't have
our passes yet, so we rejoined Matt S, Derek, Dale "this is my first DT
show" Newbury and everyone else in the line. At this point, we found out
Chris Ptacek took Derek for a cruise but he already covered that so I
won't. Once they started letting "special" people in, I got my pass and
snuck back in and caught the tale end of FOTM's soundcheck which was pretty
good. I got the chance to talk to the lead singer before they opened the
doors and he was a very down to earth person - he mentioned that he heard
the horror stories of Big Wreck but that the tour was going pretty well for
them. Oh yeah, it turns out FOTM get along pretty well with DT since
during DT's soundcheck, FOTM's singer was having fun running around taking
pictures of them and other people. FOTM also watched part of DT's
soundcheck and applauded and laughed when Mike and Derek were goofing off.
Chris Ptacek already covered FOTM's performance - all I'll say is give
these guys a fair chance before making a judgment call - for the most part
(from the reviews I skimmed from the 'Jam) the overall impression I had
gotten was that FOTM sucked - and they don't. I'll also say that the
attitude they had was ten times better than that of BW's - no stupid scowls
on their faces - the lead singer ran all over the stage through out the set
slapping everyone's hand and the guys while serious, still looked like they
were having a good time on stage.
Again, Chris P covered DT's performance as well so I'll keep mine brief.
It ROOOOOLED!!!! Okay, I'll ad a bit more: the setlist was very cool
(though I did miss Crack/Puppies) and it was awesome hearing two of my
favorite DT songs (ToT and LTL) in the same set - although as I told Derek
after the show - "you weren't supposed to edit LTL at all" - I understand
why they did it, I just didn't want to see them do it! Oh well. The
string of cover-teasers they did - Freebird, Hot for Teacher, The Trooper,
YYZ and I think a PF track were very cool - before they did the Trooper and
YYZ - (remember Mattymo - it's pronounced "why why zed" not "why why zee"
:) I saw Mike signal to JP "two more" - so these teasers (or snippits)
appear to be spontaneous/off the cuff. For any who care (D-Man and Bogie)
Mike gave me the setlists for the majority of the shows from Nov 19th on up
(I had everything else before Nov 19th except the Euro97 and South American
shows) so they will be typed up shortly.
Now the one thing that I want to mention that really shows how we
Ytse-bretheren (and Ytse-sisteren) stick together is this: just before the
show started, I jumped the barrier where security is so I could move around
when taking pictures (I had a photo pass). The one security guard told me
that was dumb of me since I was not gonna be able to jump back over the
railing (into the front row) after picture time (the first 3 songs) was
over with. Oh well, nothing I could do now. After I was done taking
pictures, I went to the side as security directed me. Slowly, I moved my
way through the mass of people (who at the time were moshing to TTT) and
when another security guard recognized me and pointed me out to Chris
Ptacek, Chris grabbed my hand and pulled me back into the front row -
before they even got to Freebird. My thanx to Chris for doing that!!!
(Heh - guess we proved that first secruity guard wrong). The moral of the
story is this: Chris Ptacek is a cool and nice guy in person - just don't
argue with him in email!! :) :) :)
After the show, we hung out and Derek came out soon after. He hung out for
a while, signed stuff, pictures, etc. - it almost seemed like he was out
there too long since everybody had their stuff signed and we were all
running out of kweschunz to ask him! Anyway, he picked his girl for the
evening (Gene Simmons must be his hero!) and later came back with a bottle
of wine before taking off with her. The bassist and drummer from FOTM came
out to chat and were very personable. I got to ask the drummer why he
plays just with socks on and he mentioned he just never could get used to
playing with shoes on - interesting. Also found out that they had been
around for 8 years though their drummer had been with them for only 3 (sez
they went through a Spinal Tap thing - losing drummer after drummer). Mike
and Marlene were the only other ones to come out to the "after-show", but
we got the chance to talk with them, take pictures and have stuffed signed.
I got to talk to Marlene at length and she was telling me how she
concerned she was about Melody's hearing (since Melody was with them at the
show) - not only did Marlene put the headphone-type ear plugs on Melody,
she also took her own in-ear ear plugs and also put those in Melody's ears.
Marlene also mentioned that Rena and the twins are also touring with DT
(though they were at the hotel) and how Melody would play with the twins.
After they left, we headed outside and ran into JP and got a picture or two
with him. Finally, they boarded the bus and headed to the hotel to get a
brief night's sleep before their 6AM flight to Cali. Hope they all got
enough sleep!!
In closing, I want to say hello to all the Vinnie Kowalski (mix master),
McGee (hope you're feeling better!!) and fellow jammerz who were at the
show and to thank DT and especially Mike for everything!!! You guys really
know how to make your fans special! Thanx again!

Oh yeah, I love this guy. I have six of his cds and they're all really
good.
The ones I have:
Gatton, Danny (Danny and the Fat Boys)-American Music
Gatton, Danny-Redneck Jazz
Gatton, Danny-Unfinished Business
Gatton, Danny-88 Elmira St.
Gatton, Danny-Crusin' Dueces
Gatton, Danny/DeFrancesco, Joey-Relentless
I still need to get his live one (Danny with a double neck guitar on
cover)
and the one with him and rockabilly legend Robert Gordon.
I even saw him once in LA in about '93. Great show.
Too bad he had to kill himself.

Are you serious, Coldfire?!? There's got to be at least 50 progguys for
every proggirl.

Lisa Marie
Hey! What about me, Lisa Marie? You still owe me for those SB pictures!
:)
--Matt (Any female Jammers in Eugene, OR? ^_-)
If you find any, send them up to Seattle asap. :)
For the record:
It was I who reposted Skadz instructions to Damon because Damon
was responding to that idiot poster like Skadz said not to do.
No offence intended by the "Are you blind?" part.

Can I guess? You took a really really really long time in sending her
tapes and she got pissed at you and broke up with you, right? ;)

Wow, what a night...
I had the great pleasure of seeing DT for the third time in less than
six months. And it just keeps getting better.
I offer my thanks to Chris Ptacek and his lovely counterpart for
making the six hour trip to Chicago a totally enjoyable experience.
The hospitality of the Chicago area jammers goes WAY beyond the
call of duty. Thanks again to Derek Frantz, (I want your Majesty necklace)
Todd and his Girlfriend/wife? from Ames Iowa, Hugo,(the better living through
chemistry drummer) The big dude with the glasses (and the DT induced erection) that stood to my left
during the show, Dale Newberry and company, (you wussy's should
have stayed for some chow) and to the other jammers that we had dinner with.
Sorry I forgot some of the names. Hey Chris, the Symphony X CD you gave me
kicks ass, thanks much. Next time I will drag along my other half, (AKA the warden)
she is a big DT fan. Unfortunately she's not a big fan of long car rides, and she
takes her job duties a little too seriously to take a day off work for a concert.
I will work on this fatal flaw of hers.

Thanks man, between the explosives and my carelessness with a lit
cigarette, We now have a convertible! I have some great pics with
the band, if they turn out well I may post them on my web page.
Hey Chris, my buddy Mike also took a picture of the flaky looking
parking attendant just for laughs, I don't think he's a jammer though. hehe
Thanks again for a great time, I hope I can get you guys to Minnesota for
the DT/ELP/DP concert in August. Toodles!

If it is the King Crimson show it should be 100:1.
This is true. But I don't see any difference between male and female for listening to prog music.
DT content: See you guys at the Maritime Hall show.
If anyone cares...Keith Emerson will be playing at the Maritime Hall on this Friday night (May 15) and Marc Bonilla and Glenn Hughes will be an opening act. And Present (Belgian prog) will be playing at the Full Moon Saloon in San Mateo on this Friday night, too. I will be at the Present show.
Good night, AE
