Steve was embarrassed to admit:
'sokay. I basically just hate the word "girlfriend." It makes me feel
like I'm 15 years old. Like:
"I went to the movies with my girlfriend this wekend."
"how'd it go?"
"Well, first my mom dropped us off at the mall..."
You get the point. :)
Steve...here's a great word to use:
how about " Meet my Lady! you will melt her hear, gain more respect and
yes it's an adult word!
No Mallrats connotations.

Hello Jammers..
I finally got the Simon Phillips` CD "Another Lifetime" after
seeing his concert live a month ago. Okay, this may not be the
hardest kick ass music, but it`s IMO very progressive. It gets
quite jazzy at times but the harmonies just can`t seem to cease
to amaze me. Simon is one helluva drumplayer (I put him on my list
right after allmighty Mike) and the rest of the musicians are
wonderful too. U might have heard of Andy Timmons (he`s got 4 CD`s
out and I can`t get any of `em here *doh*), he`s one of the
most amazing guitarists I`ve ever heard. He sounds very fresh,
very original and dinamic.
This CD is VERY high on my instrumentals recommendation list.
Anyone looking for new ideas with jazzy flavour, tons of
good taste and groove should at least give it a try.
P.S.
Simon used to play drums for Toto and Mick Jagger.

But even on LTE Petrucci didn't play all leads, he played a lot of cool
rhythms as well. This is something that I don't hear Vai do very much.
I just think that Vai's whammy bar and wah wah antics sound annoying.
I obviously prefer JP.
That most likely comes from the fact that Vai is a solo artist
and
basically has everything center around him, whereas Petrucci
*has*
to restrain himself, according to the songs DT writes. Although
he does stray from that in LTE, where gets to showcase a large
part of the time.

I usually introduce a girlfriend as "This is my ho....5 bucks and you can have her...."
Maybe that explains why I'm single right now..... :)
Actually, the last girlfriend I had I would introduce with different variations of, "This is <name>,the most beautiful girl in the world". Granted, the people I introduced her to would basically puke, but I meant it and she loved it.
Don't ask what happened...... :)

Yep. Mike P. told me himself that there MIGHT BE another live video soon: Awake era.
On another note....... I must say that 5-12-98's St. Andrews show was so incredible, that it would really be a Godsend if a bootleg was made of it. I would definitely shell out major $$$'s. Just a thought.

In a message dated 98-05-14 15:07:01 EDT, you write:
<< this should not even be discussed, they are 2 different guitarists COMPLETELY. personally, i like vai better, but thats all it is, is an opinion. and Petrucci is obviously influenced by Vai, ask him and i'm sure he will say he is. Petrucci is a great technical progressive guitarist, with a lot of feeling in his playing, and even somewhat bluesy at times. Vai is a wild guitarist, always exceeding the limits of his instruments in every way, he can play with loads of feeling, but i don't think he can really play bluesy, nor does he try to. Rocky >>
Being one of the biggest Vai fans you'll ever talk to, I tend to like Vai a little more, BUT, lately Petrucci is heard coming out of my room more so than Steve is. To say they are completely different guitarist is far from the truth though. The solo in PMU, everything about it reminds me of Vai, there isn't a thing different in that solo that Vai wouldn't play, especially the phrasement. John has said that Steve is one of his inspirations. I asked Steve once if he gets into Dream Theater at all and he said he heard some of they're music, it was outstanding, and he'd have to get some of they're stuff sometime. They both went to Berklee College Of Music, so they're level of technicality is bassically the same. I've seen Steve live 3 times, and saw a few different DT bootlegs, and I'd have to say they're live tone is equally as well as the studio tone. I'd say Steve's is even better live than it is in the studio. Steve does seem a little more relaxed on-stage and seems to get into the music more than John does, but they both do equally as well of a job. When I first saw Steve on the G3 tour with Eric Johnson, he had the audience eating out of his palm, I never saw someone grab the attention of a group of people more than he did. I think he learned a lot of the showman stuff while touring with David Lee Roth. As for the wah pedal thing, I'd say they both use it the equal amount of time, maybe John uses it more than Steve. Notice they both use it the same way, more of a tone control than a straight ahead wah wah wah wah wah, more of a pan type thing. Steve definatly uses more of the whammy bar than John. Steve does use a lot of hammer on's and pull off's, but he also picks every note a lot of the time, he mixes it up. John tends to pick every note rather than do the hammer on pull off thing, he said in an interview that he spent a lot of his time working on getting his right hand to pick every note, and he sometimes regrets it, (I cant remember the reason he regrets it though, maybe out of sympathy for the HUMAN guitarist out there who can't play at those speeds!!!!!). To me those two are THE best guitarist to ever walk the Earth, (But is Steve really from this planet? If not, then they're both definatly machines, humans have no capability to play like that!) Ok, that was long and winded. See ya all lata Andy D The Next Steve Vai
