Hello once again! Welcome back to the Celebrity Deathmatch, where today we have a very special treat! Marv, what do we have for our viewers today?

CHUCK! This looks like a HELLAFIED match between two of theeee craziest shredders you'll ever meet! From the East Coast of the U.S.A., one mean motherfucker of an axe slinger, Mr. John Petrucci! And in the opposing corner, from the opposite coast, Steve Vai! It should be an excellent match!

Alright Marv, our viewers are definitely in for a treat with this one! Bob, what's your take on the matchup?

Both opponents are guitar virtuoso's, both play Ibanez, both get their guitars made to their personal specifications! Vai definitely has the weirdness factor on his side...I haven't seen any yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if his army of little green men came into play! There's no telling what this man will do!

I don't know about our relations with the FCC, Bob, but if he pulls out that little weenie of his our sports broadcasting days may be numbered!

Yes, he does have *THE LITTLE WEENIE*! But don't worry, I don't think he's going to use that too much here. And fuck the FCC, Chuck! As for Petrucci, he has the long hair on his side, and with those chops from hell, I don't think he's afraid of that wacko in the opposite corner.

Interesting take Bob, Marv is with the wacko right now! Marv, how is Little Stevie doing?

CHUCK! LET'S ASK HIM! STEVE, how do you feel about tonight's matchup against one of the fastest shredders on the planet right now?

Well, you know, I don't know. I've been thinking I should try to confuse him at first, or just ease into it, but I don't think I can wear him out very easily, shredders like him don't get tired. So I'm thinking to myself, "Hey Steve, go for the jugular," and you know, it's just crazy enough it might work, and if it doesn't, well you know, I'm just going to make it work, right? I'm really not that good at this, I just make it look easy.

The Jugular, YES! CHUCK! That is what Vai is thinking right now! BACK TO YOU!

Alright, Marv! Right next to me, I have Joe Satriani, mentor of Steve and an incredibly notorious slinger himself, Joe, how do you feel about tonight's matchup?

Well Chuck, personally I don't see what this is going to accomplish, you see I do my own thing and Steve drew a lot of that from me.

Like your abuse of the whammy effect?

Hey, if it fits I use it. Steve's the one with the bar problem. It's a filangal fixation, he always needs his right hand to be stroking something. It's gotten so bad they've added another whammy bar to his guitar!

Will this be something Petrucci can use against him?

You know, it could be, but I don't really know. The battle is all up to the two contenders, I know how Steve's mind works, I don't know how John's works.

Speaking of John, Marv is over in that corner right now! Marv, how is Mr. Petrucci doing tonight?

CHUCK, I'm here with the fastest shredder this side of the Mississippi, John...what is going through your mind right now!?

    Are you okay man?

    YES! WHY DO YOU ASK?!

Well Steve...man, this guy...what can I say? His chops are incredible, his style is just gushing with passion, he's a very formidable opponent. I think if I can take away his whammy bars, he's screwed.

HE'S SCREWED! YES! Back to you Chuck!

Well, it's about that time the opponents must go to their corners and the bell is about to ring....

~Eckie wonders how many bets this will start....

maybe cause they want to experiment with new sounds, I really like a band that doesnt sound the same in every record.

    Ummm well...

I know the SF concert is on Saterday, but anyway... Last weekend I went to pick up ear plugs. The only one that this store (Wherehouse) had have a 30dB rating. Is that going to be too much? I've never used them before so I don't know how much distortion they cause. Should I go out to say a drug store and look for some with lower dB rating?

I just got Carved in Stone... and I have to say I'm very impressed. The vocals, while not in the range of JLB, make great chords. Also while they may not be technically inclined like DT, they utilize piano riffs very well, and have nice contract in songs.

Those of you who have fallen out of your chairs at the sight of the "from" address can now pick yourselves up off the floor. ;) Yes, it is really and truly Jen. :) Sad to say that while I have been subscribed all this time, I have not always been able to stay on top of my 'jam reading. Among other things, Keith and I bought our first house late last year, so we've been keeping pretty busy. Anyhow, as a result, I was not aware of any concert dates - yes, shame on me. :P Just today, thanks to a keen eyed person at Keith's work, we found an ad for all the shows at the Maritime (sp?) in S.F. It's been a long time since we saw Dream Theater live ('94) or met up with any 'jammers (Queensryche '95), so we're looking forward to both. :) I suspect we will be properly attired in items from our varied Ytsejam/old DT shirt collection. <g>

Well, I really couldn't help myself.

I saw the name Blevins on the Jam and I couldn't help thinking about a book I read for English. (This is in no way shape or form a kick at Mike Blevins, whose name reminded me.)

The book is called "All the Pretty Horses" by Cormic McCarthy (While it may have a horrible title the book is awsome. One of the very few good novels I've read for school. Anyway, one of the characters is named "Blevins." When he meets the two main characters, the following conversation ensues:

Grady: "Are you sure your name isn't Blevit?" Blevins: "Yeah, it's Blevins." Grady: "You know what a Blevit is?" Blevins: "No" Grady: "A blevit is ten pounds of shit in a six pound bag."

Both are obviously excellent guitarists.....I believe the difference is:

Vai is a guitarist (ie sacrifices songwriting for pure shredding)

Petrucci is a songwriter (ie sacrifices pure shredding for songwriting)

Depends on what sort of music you like as to who is the better player.

    >I'll make this short, DT rocked, James' voice wasn't shitty, and the >band had a blast playing up there! >Bottom line, great show, made up for last October's dissapointment.

Well, Jeff just perfectly captured what I would have said about the Detroit show.....not sure if the Mosh pit talk started up before or after reports of this show, but there was some action going on all around/behind me for a long while..... Portnoy at the end of the show, "I don't know what the fuck just happened, but thanks a lot"....

but then, mosh pits can be a good thing, too.....seeing as how i started out 5th row and got shoved up to breathing over the neck of the guy in the front row.....

As Jeff said above, last October's DT in DEtroit on Devil's night was pretty much a hellish show, what with painful sound, me getting lost (at 5'6". that's not saying much) in a forest of tall people, the crowd shoving all ways and my legs killing me all night.......

Tuesday for me was as good (almost) as last October was bad....I thought maybe it was just because of the fact that I could SEE the band, and watch their hands and fingers move and CONNECT with the music, even as I was getting buffeted from behind....as opposed to being shoved around with no space to go to with obstructed views on all sides......but reading reports of those Jammers I met (hey Christian, Joe, Mark, John) and those i expected to see but didn't run in to (Jeff, Andrew, where were you guys?), the sound was actually better this time around.....

the mosh pit did finally get to me....i was clipped at (seriously) about the three minute warning, and staggered out of the building, and was damn glad not to have any classes wednesday, cuz i wouldn't have been able to walk to them......

but before that, what with Under (Pink) Floydian Skies, the appearance of Melody, the trooper, etc, etc and all the other good stuff, it was all cool, even full on the mouth

whatever the reason was, I had one HELL of a time, just may be the best show i've had the fortune to witness, and for that I wanted to say "thank you Mike Portnoy, and pass the sentiment on to the rest of the guys"

with minor apologies for the ramble and the self-indulgence,

    partha sarathi mukhopadhyay

p.s.: Kai: got any birthday specials going on? mine's next Thursday :)

    (j/k of course)

    >In the alt.guitar newsgroups, someone has the gall to say that Steve >Vai is much better than Petrucci. Another poster said that they both >sounded alike.

Hmmm...I think there's guitarist who sounds like Vai.He's got his own style,no doubt about that. But to say he's better than JP?I don't think so.Different would be the word. You have to remember, that Vai is a solo artist, while JP does great job playing within a band.

JP also has some Vai influeces (listen the solo for "Under a Glass Moon"),but they definately don't sound the same.

    > Vai taps, uses the whammy bar and wah wah way more than Petrucci > does.Petrucci primarily uses alternate picking while Vai frequently > incorporates hammer-on/pull-offs as well.

Well, that's the stuff Vai is know for.JP is more of "Traditional" guitar player,if you know what I mean, while Vai is the master of making guitar sound like something else.

    > Subjectively, I prefer to listen to Petrucci than Vai because I > feel that Petrucci's playing is much more tasteful than Vai's. > Petrucci knowswhen to restrain himself.......something that > cannot be easily said about Vai.

I also listen JP more often, and I think that it's the sense of playing for the song with taste, that makes JP the guitar god he is. But personally I think Vai really holds back a lot.Listen to the solo for "Rescue Me or Bury Me".It takes forever, before he starts really burning. He almost lays back too much(IMO).I wish he would more often just go for it...

    > Nevertheless, they're both great players.

Now,this is where I agree completely. By the way, does anybody know what Vai has been doing currently?
