    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Kurt wanted to know:
    > Forgive me if this has been asked before, but if someone went back in time
    > and erased Dream Theater from human history, who would your favorite band be
    > today?

This is actually kind of scary, not because the answer's difficult -- Rush
is my favorite band with DT very close behind -- but because I realized
how much music I'd be missing out on if I'd never heard of DT. I saw "Pull
Me Under" on MTV, got into the band, discovered the ytsejam, and through
the 'jam discovered approximately 5,318 prog bands that I would have never
    heard about otherwise.

Wow. Makes ya think. Thanks everybody for the recommendations -- and keep
    'em coming!

    Ta,
    Phil

I have had *some* sleep and my voice is still hoarse but my fingers can
type out my thoughts on Saturday.
This actually was a Dream Theater (Are they anything like Nightmare
    Cinema?) weekend.

Friday night: Ryan Webb shows up at my door with a surprise that he just
HAD to show to me and Lisa Marie. I was bummin when he got there and he
handed me a belated b-day card from Matt. Then there is this knock at my
door which I knew was not Lisa Marie yet so I look thru the peephole and
there is this cute guy out there...I open the door to the surprise....Matt
"M-Bone" Schnoor! Ryan you did it...you and Matt really surprised all of
us! I promptly page Lisa and tell her she MUST come over to get the
surprise that night and show us her new Car! She called from the driveway
to come down and see the car (a brand new 98 Black Mustang) and she was
    surprised to see Bones!

Saturday: Ryan and Bones pick me and Lauren up so we can drop her at
Lisa's mom's and go pick up Pam before heading to Dave and Kim Thomas'
place for the CaliCrew pre-show party! Wow when we pull up to Pam's apt.
was she ever surprised! Bones you really pulled this off! And you lied to
    us...you will pay babe!

Off to Dave and Kim's! Wow what a turnout of Cali Crew! Got to see old
friend Jammers Dave, Kim, Brian, Neil, Nicole, and Paul and meet some new
ones, who I will shoot myself cause I can't remember everyone! It was
awesome to meet Chris Oates and his friends Chris and Stephan. Between 2
Matt's and 2 Chris' all I could think of was "HI! I'm Larry and this is my
brother Darryl and my other brother Darryl!" And then I get the distinct
honor of meeting THE MattB! It was a great pleasure to finally meet you!
And yes, it's true I was on my knees in front of him! A word here, Dave
and Kim, you guys are a class act! Thanks for opening your home to the
Jammers for our gathering! You show what true Jammer spirit is all about!
The show would have been better if you could have joined us in more than
spirit! We piled outside for a BIG group picture of the Crew with the
    Banner.....Everybody say "Balls and chunk!"

Onward to the show! MattB was right, we were just flying up there in
Lisa's new Pony I shall call Black Lightning! Man the gods were with us
that night as we found parking right at the door to the Maritime Hall!
More meets and Greets to other Jammers we caught up with: Randall Braun,
Sis, Rick Audet, Dr. Mosh, who I must say was brunette that night and
looking quite fetching for his damn self! (thanks D for the pass!), Steve
and Matt Guillory! Cali Crew was in full effect that night! And yes I did
lose my voice before we got to the show and still haven't gotten it back yet.

After waiting in the chilly wind, they finally let us in and I got to
snatch up a promo square and poster for my collection! WooHoo! Went
upstairs to the stage and found places to stand! I was able to pick up
some programs and a DT pin! Full on the Mouth came on and hey IMO they
were not bad. I was dancing and grooving to it, so much so that I went out
and bought the CD that night! Good thing I did cause I got it signed by
the Bass player and Guitarist later!

Finally...this is it..the Rooster. MattB nearly lost his mind singing this
song along with the rest of the crowd! And once the music from Clockwork
Orange started and the lights dropped the crowd surged forward as one and
away we go! I can't remember every song they played as I was in heaven
just being there but I can say that the band looked very relaxed and Happy
to be there! James' voice was awesome and right on the money! Hearing
Speak to Me for the first time was awesome. Derek's solo to Lines in the
Sand slayed me. Mike Portnoy does it all, he sang, played keys, played
guitar! Hey the man's an Animal and we love him! The look on John
Petrucci's face when he played My Way in his solo and we sang along! The
heavy solid pounding bottom of John Myung's bass at the intro to Trial of
Tears! Mike's Wandering solo. Being there with my best friends, and
watching MattB's face light up at seeing Dream Theater for the first time.
A camera was gotten inside the show and Bones says he took pics during the
first 4 songs. I'll get then developed soon! Only low point, getting
    moshed by dunk people!

After show, Bones and I got to meet Derek and I got a OH! You're Carol from
Derek when I got his autograph. Getting more pics and sigs from James who
loves his new haircut for the wash and go effect! Going outside and
getting JohnP to sign one last autograph while waiting for Mike. Got to
finally catch up with Mark Philpot (HI!). Now is the moment......MIKE
"ANIMAL" PORTNOY! Once again Mike is a class act. Actually all the guys
in DT are class acts! I got some autographs and a hello from Mike and then
the moment that we waited for....we gave Mike the Cali Crew Banner that I
must stop and give props to Lisa Marie for her creative brilliance. This
banner would not be in existence without you my best friend! We opened up
the banner in front of the bus and Mike liked it! We got him to stand
behind the banner in the middle and we gathered around to get pics of this
momentous occasion! Mike, I hope you enjoy the banner as much as we did
    making it for you!

Once again, thanks to Dream Theater. You bring people together! Watch for
more details when the pics get done!

A still very sore, tired, hoarse, but unbelievably HAPPY...

Well I just drove in from the coast and man is my butt tired! *rimshot*

    But seriously, folks...

You can imagine what my inbox looks like after being gone for 5 days, so if
anything has already been said gimme a break.

    A few observations:

There is only one place in the whole city of SF where it's legal to make a
left turn and it's always on the other side of town no matter where you are.

Derek needs to practice catching drum sticks thrown at him. He never caught
one all night and Mike was constantly hucking 'em at him.

Derek needs to be higher in the mix. There were very few times when Derek
    was even audible.

Derek's signature looks more like a seismograph impersonation than a name.

KJLB and MP are the coolest guys I've ever met. I think JP was really tired
or something and JM never says anything. I didn't get to talk to Derek. He
only hung around long enough to practice his lie detector impersonation on a
few people's posters/liner notes and do a Nicky Lemons pose for somebody.
KJ and MP were very cool and were very appreciative when I told them how
long I traveled. ( KJ = No shit? MP = REALLY?!? ) The other two guys said
something like "thanks." KJ also said that they were going to try to make
it up to somewhere close to Idaho/Utah soon. They are coming back to SF
    with Deep Purple in August.

Quite a few people (including my brother, Zoiter) didn't even notice that JM
ever came out of the bus. He must have ninja training or something. He
lurks in the shadows and speaks only when necessary. I was the first one to
talk to him and he seemed very cool if not a bit (er... very) shy.

Lisa Marie has an uncanny resemblance to one of my ex-gf's (except for the
    leather *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*)

It was really cool to meet all the jammers that were there. Matt B, Mr. and
Mrs. Jenny Bear, *chuckle* Chris, um and all the other ones that I can't
    remember.

I had third row on JP's side for the concert and he'd come out to the very
end of the stage for at least half his solos and play them right in my face.
    It was extremely cool.

Mike's Drum solo, which included grabbing a snare and taking it out into the
crowd and doing little snare duets with crowd members was awesome.

JP is a big ham. You could tell he was loving every minute of the concert.
He was always getting thing looks on his face like "You think that was cool?
Watch this!" He is the man and everything though so that's fine by me. The
best part was when he played some opera song ("I did it my way" or
something) and was all wiping tears from his eyes and stuff.

Paradigm shift was extremely cool also. My bro thanked mike for playing it
and he thanked my bro for knowing it. hehe

Mike has the FII cover on his bass drums now. The guy in the white shirt is
on the left one and the guy in the tan vest is on the right one.

Full on the Mouth was much better than I expected. The guitarist (nipple
rings, tattoos, leather pants, greasy dreads and all) kinda sucked, but the
music was pretty cool. I was thinking that it'd make good video game music
and then NotHagar mentioned that 2 of their songs are going to be on the
Road Rash 3 soundtrack. Best I can describe it is electronic metal. Just
don't expect anything more difficult than power chords (In dropped D tuning,
    no less).

I only got pulled over once the whole trip. Ironic how it was for going 36
in a "25" (it was an onramp. feh.) When I'd been passing cops going 100 the
whole trip. I didn't get a ticket though so it's all good.

In all the whole trip was somewhere approaching 2000 miles, but it was well
worth it, especially since there's so much cool stuff to do in SF. We were
there for 2 whole days and still didn't get to do all that we wanted to.
I'd never want to live there, but it was awesome to visit.

I know I'm missing a bunch of stuff but it's probably all been posted
    anyway.

oh yea here's one. MP yawned and had an overall bored look on his face
during the instrumental section of Metropolis. They must have played that
song ten thousand times by now but he shouldn't be able to yawn during that.
    Yikes.

Hello everyone, Did anyone on this list that was at the Irving Plaza show get a copy of the two-song sampler from the band Rhythmscape? I am friends with the band and was fortunate enough to listen to their forthcoming CD. It is some of the best prog-metal I've heard in a long time (and I'm not just saying that because they are my friends!). Among the influences are Dream Theater (of course), Iron Maiden, Fates Warning, and bands of the like. I'd love to hear what others thought of the sampler. Please e-mail me privately, unless you REALLY like the band. Then post to the list. : ) These guys are really good and need all the help they can get in getting their music heard.

Nope. The North American dates after August 17 are DEFINATELY not confirmed yet. And apparently all the dates *before* that aren't finalized yet EITHER... except for the ones that are already on sale, of course. But then again, you never know. ;-)

Best thing would be to keep checking UACM or the Official Deep Purple Webpages. I keep in touch with Svante from the DP site, and mail him whenever someone here posts info that contradicts their list of dates/venues... Trust me, as soon as all venues and dates are confirmed, the info will be on UACM.

    > and I mean a REAL list, not a list of TBA's and possible > dates. :)

The TBA's are a dead giveaway that there IS no finalized list of dates/venues yet. ;-) _____

    >>Has James's voice been like that every show or was he just hoarse or something on the cybercast. Sure hope it's not that way in DFW next week<<

james sounded fine two weeks ago in cincy, not at all tired or hoarse. he sounded ok to me too at the beginning of the cybercast but it was apparent to me pretty quick that he was probably vocally tired, in my experience the first thing to go is enunciation and your high notes. i noticed he wasnt doing the usual things with the melody, i.e. taking the safer, lower notes. as the show went on i really started to worry for him although i know he is trained so hes knows how to handle that situation. then i was told they are playing monday, tuesday, and wednesday =\. i dont know what his normal "recovery" period is or how he sounds the next day after a straining night but man, that can be scary. as a singer that just hard to hear. there are medical treatments one can get for vocal problems when theres a gig on the line, usually a steroid shot to get rid of the inflammation (ndtc - tori amos was on steroids for part of her club tour for the same thing) but thats risky as you could possibly hurt yourself worse in the long run by the false comfort that provides. james definitely sounded like he could use a couple days rest.

also wanted to say thanks to everyone whos made me feel really welcome on #ytsejam, i know theres probably a lot of us new faces there but yall are making me feel right at home =).

Just wanted to make a quick comment on this. If you would like to post something commercial to the jam (selling CDs, selling music equipment, selling X-rated videos of Derek with Pamela Anderson, etc), PLEASE keep the posts VERY short (like under 10 lines) and point people to a URL or ask them to mail you or something. This list isn't for commercial type posts, but I don't mind them if they are short and let people find out other info elsewhere.
