I was very impressed with the show. They put on a longer show and it's a
lot better than the show in Palo Alto last time. James' voice was almost
perfect.
I was glad to have a chance ot meet other jammers at the show as well.
There is one thing that I'd like to say. A few of DT fans DO need to change
your own attitudes in seeing concerts. Please think of others before you
push push push or slam. If you want to be up in the front please come
early. Be nice to others!! I was very tired of people around me. I did not
understand why they tried to push people in front of them and there was no
space for them to sneak up to the front. I can't consider this kind of
people civilizable.
I hope my English is better than this so I can say more. Oh well....

First of all, I can confirm that they'll be playing at the Finger
Lakes Performing Arts Center on Aug. 14th because I bought my tickets
this morning (woo hoo!, DT only 20 min. from my house) . All I can
say is . . . ouch! $45 to see DT. But do I care? . . . No. I think I
got like the 8th row. Should be close enough.
I was also psyched to hear the commercial for the show on our radio
station here this morning. It's great, you hear the guy with the deep
voice " . . . with special guest . . . Dream Theater" . . . and they
throw in a little clip of You Not Me. Pretty cool to hear that. Now
if the station would actually start playing DT . . . that would be
even cooler.
I also wanted to say how cool it has to be for the guys in DT to be
playing with these bands that were big influences on them. I can
only imagine how psyched they were when they heard that they'd be
playin' with Van Halen, and Satriani . . . plus opening for DP and ELP.
I also think this tour is gonna be a little strange for us crazy DT
fans. It's gonna be weird having to watch DT while sitting down.
Plus, the crowd won't be as into the show as we will be. But I'm not
going to care really. It's gonna be great exposure for DT.
I haven't had time to post my review of the Irving Plaza show. I
won't say too much other than it was awesome of course. I was in the
front row on Petrucci's side. It's great to be in the front row and
make eye contact with the guys, and be able to see their facial
expressions. You feel like such a part of the concert. But the down
side is the sound. All I could hear was Petrucci and Portnoy.
Anyways, while waiting in line there was this really really annoying
big fat African-American chic (sorry to be rude . . . but she was
really annoying) that wouldn't stop talking. She had a real attention
craving problem. She was telling lies all over the place. She must
have said she met every freakin' band in the world. According to her,
she's met Ozzy 8 times, the guys in Fear Factory, Jeff Bukabum (sp?
he's a hockey player BTW), plus about 20 other bands. She didn't even
stop when she got inside. It was great, when each video came on, she
said . . . ohh I've met them. I think a Prong video came on and she
said, ohh Greenday . . . and we said, no that's Prong . . . and she
says ohhh, I've met them. Pretty funny . . . actually kinda sad. The
worst part was there were these idiot high schoolers that kept eggin'
her on. They kept asking what all the people she's met were like and
tellin' her how cool it was that she's met them. I wanted to flatten
her like a pancake, but I don't think she could be squished that flat
. . . well, maybe like a really thick pancake . . . like the kind you
need a full glass of milk just to take one bite of . . . uhhh, but I
digress.
There was also this other girl that was a couple people behind me
that almost passed out halfway through the show. One of the bouncers
checked up on her and asked how she was doing, and she said she
couldn't see. Hmmm, well you're about 5 feet tall and you're in the
third row . . . now who's fault is that? She wasn't lookin' that good
though, so I gave her some of my water. The bouncer also gave her
some ice. I think she got out of there not too long after that. Why
she was even there in the first place is beyond me.
Wow, this got long . . . sorry about that. Anyways . . . looking
forward to the show this summer. Laters,

Stream of Consciousness is from a T3 recording from the liveconcerts web broadcast. I was given many tapes to work with and one tape sounded so far and away better than the rest...
There's nothing wrong with Nick doing that show on CDR, but Nick, you should be aware that Mike Portnoy speficially wants FULL SHOWS on disc if anyone's going to make DT boots. For this reason I will only ever release full shows from 1998 on out.

I didn't catch it, but Keith told me he caught "My Way," which I think was a kind of interesting little tribute there to Sinatra. Also, I could swear I heard "Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion as well. That's kind of fun, trying to pick up on those interwoven bits.

Actually, it looked more like *two* women. Way different from when I last met the band in '94! At the time, Derek was really new - like within his first couple weeks touring - and he was out before everyone else and spent a rather long time conversing with everyone. I suppose maybe it was building his self-esteem up when he was possibly feeling a bit insecure about filling such big shoes.

I liked meeting you, too, as well as a bunch of names I'm likely to forget, so I do apologize. Let's see... Woot, Lisa Marie, Chris Oates, Pam ("Rockin' Cabbie"??)... I also met an old-timer 'jammer who is not on the list anymore, Matthew (he mentioned knowing Scott Cook AKA "Grinder").
We also struck up various conversations with other show attendees that were not online people. There just seems to be this instant feeling that you've met kindred when you find another fan.
It seems to me that the band is growing more loose with performing. (I'm referring to stage presence here because musically they were very tight.) James was bopping all over the place, making jokes. Mike was, well, Mike. Derek was even playing around, trying to catch the drum sticks Mike kept throwing around. I thought it was rather nice to see them so relaxed with each other and the crowd.
I do wish that they would have done a bit more "Awake" stuff. I was waiting for "Space Dye Vest" or "The Mirror" (I've probably mentioned it before, but I really love the "Puppies on Acid" intro). Keith wanted to hear at least one WDADU track, like "The Ytse Jam."
I miss the lasers from the last show that I saw. Those lava lamps and TV sets just didn't cut it for us!
Overall, though, I would still rank it as one of my favorite concerts and I look forward to catching up with you guys in August! Maybe, if we're lucky, they'll actually play here, too!

I think they might be referring to the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium, which is actually in Oakland (10 10th Street... Xst is Fallon). If that's the case then that kind of sucks, because unless things have changed recently, there is NO parking and the venue is like an oven.

Wrong. Bahr's SoC is from the Real Audio broadcast. He used part of my DAT that was recorded with a 56K modem.

Watching John Petrucci during his solo on the encore...he came over to our side of the stage and was having a great time playing when Mike and James came over and picked him up by the arms and legs STILL PLAYING flawlessly and carried him back across the stage over to his rack and set him down on the floor. He finished his solo sitting cross legged on the floor just grinning and laughing even when Mike leaned over him and played Eruption on his guitar!
I can say that the guys looked happy and relaxed on stage and it showed....the drumstick up his ass comment that James made when Mike was throwing sticks was hysterical!
THIS is why I love DT...they still love doing what they do so well! --
