Ya know I think these rumors of people leaving the band only spring up so
someone can start one of these stupid "who would replace?" threads. Jeez,
people, if you're not happy with someone in the band, just say so. You'll
only get flamed to the fourth tier of Hell for it, but we welcome opinions

Man, that guy has got to be crazy...oh wait...that's me. Yep, I did get all
of them to sign my back, and I am making plans today to have them all
tattooed. I talked to Mike after the show and asked him if he keeps up with
the Internet stuff. He said he did, so I asked him if he'd ever been to the
site with the quiz. He said he had. Well, that was MY site. I couldn't
believe it. He told me that he had the whole band take the quiz and no one
knew any of it. Mike laughed, "Man, I was the only one who knew any of that
shit."

The crowd was gettin' restless and I had punched (not literally) my way
up to the second row on the right hand corner of the stage where I ran
into some more of my Phx friends (goddamn I knew a lot of ppl there) and
awaited the band to come out on stage. Watchin' the roadies is a fun
experience, especially when one of them is a big fat guy with a white
goatee and long graying hair, "HEY JERRY! GET OFF THE STAGE!" heh heh,
we even got him to flick us off before he left the stage. Fun fun fun.
So the stage is set. The instruments are veiled in black cloth (along
with Derek's lava lamps), smoke starts flying everywhere...and I take
off the do-rag....
..and Alice in Chains' Rooster starts playing in the PA. What a damn
cool tune that is...the entire crowd started singing to it (and I REALLY
need to get that CD now, "Dirt"...for sentimental purposes more than
anything else...the CD itself kicks ass, I know!)
And then it started. The riff to A Change of Seasons blared out of the
PA and the boyz took the stage. Two and a half hours of pure DT heaven
ensued and by the time it was all through, I was a mound of fleshy jello
with a grin ten trillion miles wide, stretching across the cosmos.
Highlights:
John Petrucci was RIGHT ABOVE ME shredding, staring, and shredding some
more. I swear we had a psychic conversation just from the looks he was
giving me!
"GO JOHN GO! YOU FRICKIN' RULE!"
"Whoa...look at the fro on that guy!"
"Okay, I've seen you on video tapes, you can't play that fast."
"Oh yes I can..."
"HOLY SHIT! YOU CAN!"
"HA! Next victim!"
That was the coolest, JP made eye contact with just about everybody
while playing them kick ass songs. Mike pointed out ppl in the audience
(i think he knew who I was and where I was, he pointed a vicious drum
stick right at me at one point), and the entire band was pretty much on
fire. John Myung was just as impressive on that 6 string...I have NEVER
seen fingers move like his!!! Portnoy spit like a camel, knocking out a
couple of the EMI staff, and hitting John and James a couple times.
James retaliated by sloshing a whole bottle of Avian water and soaked
Mike's kit. Then Mike jumped over the bass drums and used James'
forehead as a snare drum...
..okay, that part was exaggurated...but the stage antics, the clothes
(Derek, YOU DA MAN!), and best of all, the MUSIC was so damn inspiring.
I wanted to go home and play all night long, but I was exhausted by the
end of the concert and I wouldn't dare touch my guitar with those
signatures all over the back of the guitar, unfinished and unprotected
from the elements (i.e., my belly). I don't need to tell any of you ppl
to check these guys out when they roll through your neighborhood. ;)
James was on fire. He hit every note perfectly and VERY FUCKING LOUDLY,
soaring above the rest of the instruments (he even did the Doug Pinnick
parts in LitS...amazing!!!) His impersonation of David Lee Roth was
classic.
No, I didn't mosh. :) Actually, there was like, ONE dude in the entire
audience who wanted to start a pit, but eventually the crowd got fed up
with him and shoved him to the outer rims of the club, near the
entrance. No moshing for YOU! Two weeks!
I'm even considering catching a couple of the HoB shows next time they
roll through the west coast this summer. The entire set was awesome
(okay, I admit...I would've preferred to have seen Mirror/Lie live than
Anna Lee, but hey, it all kicked ass and dammit, I CAN'T complain!)

My favorite vocalist of all time, more so than LaBrie, would be Geoff Tate.
I've wondered who has a higher range, and I think James does, but Geoff just
has that tone in his voice. I'd love to hear a collaboration with Queensryche
and DT.
I think someone should start up one of those charity things like that Hear N
Aid thing that went on in the 80's with all the metal bands, reunite everyone
and throw DT and, of course, Steve Vai on it.
Anyways, Geoff Tate would be my choice if a new vocalist had to
come into the band. See ya

I know I haven't posted in a while (yeah, like anyone noticed <g>),
basically because I got a bit lazy in keeping up with my recommended daily
allowance of Jammage, much to my doctor's chagrin...but after sifting through
a bunch of previously unread Jams, I'm back and ready to roll, so let's let
the fun and festivities commence...
First: Web Site coming soon!
I would like to announce that my friend, the lovely and talented Christina
(known to many Rush and DT fans as AnalogGal here on AOL) and I are preparing
to create what we hope will be a splendid li'l web page dedicated to
progressive music. She's handling all the technical stuff, i.e. the actual
setup of the page, and will be contributing content as well, including some of
the best DT concert photos I've ever seen, whilst I will be writing reviews,
interviews, essays, features and whatever else springs to mind. To that end,
I'd like to request that some of our slightly more famous friends from Shadow
Gallery, Spock's Beard and Dream Theater (among others) consider doing E-mail
interviews with us for use on the site. We are dedicated to putting up the
very best site we can, and between Christina's "Images" and my "Words," we'd
like to think that maybe we can actually pull it off. Once the page is ready
to go, I'll post the URL so y'all can check it out and let us know what you
think.
Next: a Saturday to be remembered.
A couple of weeks ago, I attended the always-amazing Second Saturday
Record Show in lovely Wayne, NJ, and rejoiced, for my friend Bob Wolf of
Sights & Sounds had returned to the show bearing his usual gargantuan
assortment of prog-rock CDs. I was saddened, however, when he told me that
next month's show may be his last, as personal circumstances may force him to
close down the mail-order business that has been a labor of love for him lo,
these last few years. Still, his loss was my gain, as I saved a whopping $85
off the four CDs I bought from him thanks to his relentless "nexto-last-show"
price slashing. Thus it was that I came home with the following gems o'
progosity: Eldritch, "Headquake" (the second, most recent album by this
excellent Italian prog-metal outfit); Pageant, "Abysmal Masquerade" (terrific
late 80s Japanese prog-rock featuring the vocals and keyboard work of Ms.
Hiroko Nagai); "ProgFest 94" (a superb live 2-CD document of that inaugural
West Coast celebration of all things prog, featuring great performances by
such prog luminaries as Anekdoten, Anglagard, Kalaban, Echolyn, Kevin
Gilbert's Giraffe, Minimum Vital and Sebastian Hardie); and finally another
Japanese import, "It Reminds Me of Those Days," by Social Tension (the name
sounds punk, but the music is pure prog in the hallowed ELP vein; the
18-minute title suite is worth the price of the disc by itself!).
Happily, I then moved on to the Sentinel Steel table, home of all that is
prog-metal, back for a triumphant return after its highly successful debut at
the previous month's show, and snapped up five more excellent discs:. First
was the self-titled debut of Arkhe, a remarkable Italian quintet whose
material is very reminiscent of "Images & Words"-era DT, but with a smoother
flow, if you can believe that--as you would expect, the musicians (guitarist
Gianluca Ferro, keyboardist Lorenzo Milani, bassist Michele Buzzetti and
drummer Claudio Riotti) display chops galore, but their strongest asset is
vocalist Pino Tozzi, whose singing is clear, powerful, wide-ranging, and best
of all, virtually accent-free -- great songs, magnificent musicianship and
crystalline sound all comine to show that this is a band to watch closely;
then I grabbed Kamelot's "Eternity" and "Dominion," both of which are strong
examples of Crimson Glory-esque prog-metal, featuring the Midnight-ish vocals
of Mark Vanderbilt (who has since been replaced by ex-Conception singer Roy S.
Khan) and the ripping guitar work of Thom Youngblood; "Building Rome," the
brand new release from Mercury Rising, which is even better than their
excellent debut album ("Upon Deaf Ears"), flawlessly integrating new
guitarists Mike Evans and Judd Rizzo, who also contribute great guitar synth
tracks over the powerful vocals of holdovers Clarence Osborne and the strong
rhythm section of bassist Chris Brush and drummer/lyricist Jeff Moos; and
finally, "A Mended Rhyme," the fourth and most recent album by the Swedish
quintet Tad Morose, whose new singer Urban Breed (they swear that's his real
name) brings a Dio-like intensity and aggressiveness, both vocally and
lyrically, to the band's most complex and sophisticated music yet.
Deliriously happy with our purchases, two of my AOL friends and I then
departed the show to head down to Philadelphia for a performance by the
acclaimed Michigan prog outfit known as Discipline; I was very much looking
forward to seeing them, as I hadn't thought I'd ever get the chance to see
them outside of a ProgScape-type event. Yet while I was bummed over the fact
that seeing Discipline meant NOT seeing DT, who were playing the Electric
Factory the same night, fate smiled upon us and made up for it (kind of) by
allowing us to meet John Petrucci, his lovely wife Rena and their adorable
twins in the Hard Rock Cafe restaurant as they waited for a table. I shook
JP's hand and introduced myself as a fan since 1989, which seemed to impress
him somewhat. He and Rena werewarm, gracious and very friendly as my friend
Perk and I sheepishly admitted we were in town not for the Electric Factory
show but for Discipline's peformance at the nearby Wig & Mask Theater
(besides, Perk had seen them at Irving Plaza the night before). I cursed
myself for not having anything with me for JP to sign, but still, a true
moment was achieved when I pointed to Steve Vai's wall-mounted guitar and said
to John, "I think they ought to put one of your guitars right next to that
one." He laughed and said, "That would be cool!" Rena then joked that the
reason the Hard Rock didn't have one of his guitars up there already was that
he gives her all of his guitars after he's done with them, and I pointed out
Chris Impellitteri's guitar above us and said, "Well, if they've got one of
(his) guitars in here, they really ought to have one of yours"; JP laughed
again and nodded in agreement. If only we'd thought to have had our friend
Rob bring his camera along to the restaurant so we could take a picture with
him...oh well. Memories last longer than photographs, anyway.
Anyhow, Discipline proved themselves to be an extraordinary live band,
however, putting on a stunning 2-hour plus show that featured all four of the
very lengthy tracks that comprise their highly acclaimed "Unfolded Like
Staircase" album, as well as several selections from their debut CD, "Push and
Profit" ("Diminished" and "Karmilla" are both far more powerful in concert
than in their studio incarnations), and a couple of as-yet-unreleased tracks
("Circuitry" and "Homegrown"). Both CDs seemed to be selling briskly, and I
managed to nab the last of the beautiful white Discipline T-shirts for a mere
$20. Their amazing efforts dissolved whatever disappointment I felt over not
seeing DT that night, and we returned from rain-swept Philadelphia very late
and very happy. Thanks to Matthew Parmenter, a.k.a. the Singing Mime (vocals
and keyboards), Jon Preston Bouda (guitar), Mathew Kennedy (bass) and Paul
Dzendzel (drums) for giving the 150 or so of us fortunate souls in attendance
a magical evening of progressive rock not soon to be forgotten.
Oh, and Always Almost played after Discipline, but all their spirited
efforts just made me miss Echolyn more. Sorry, Brett, Ray and Paul. :^(
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Those of you out there who
haven't checked out Arkhe, I repeat: if you love "Images & Words," and all of
us here on the Jam know you do, order this disc and prepare to be blown away.

well, I like James, and he's grown on me, and i'd hate to see anything
happen, but, we all know things can happen. I guess anyone that has
seen my signature knows that I'm a huge QR fan...and hence, Geoff Tate
is probably my fav singer in the world...:) Now, I question how much
longer QR will be able to hold together, with DeGarmo gone, I hope they
stay, but who knows....so perhaps Geoff would be available...We all know
he has a great range(though he didn't display it on HitNF)But the thing
that impresses me most about Geoff is his style and phrasing, and I
think that would add yet another dimension to DT. He can yelp, as well
as groove into a ballad, and he does have some solid experience
writing...I may be way off base, but hell, that would combine my fav
singer with my fav band, all for one heavenly experience for me...:)
though maybe not for others....

I just saw mention of Phish, and yes, that's a HUGE reason why they are
so unpopular with many people, because of many of their little trashy
fans that follow them around. Two years ago, they played for the
Louisiana Jazz and Heritage Festival, and they totally trashed the
place. The fans were smelly, obnoxious little pricks, who felt like
they owned the place. They told tourists not to buy the jazzfest
products, to buy stuff from other fans so they could support the fans.
They camped out on people's private property and generally were a public
nuisance. Now, Phish is banned from playing JazzFest anymore over here
because of the fans. Now, I personally can appreciate what Phish does,
they are talented musicians, and play some nice ideas, though they get
kind of old after a while for me. It kind of, after a while, starts to
kind of all sound the same to me. I personally like bands like
Widespread Panic and Galactic a whole lot more. What is a shame though,
is that people judge them cuz of their fans, because so many(not all) of
them are so rotten.

Just got back from the Ft. Worth show, and WHOA, what a show!
It had a *completely* different feel to it from the Lubbock show last night.
If you read my last post about the Lubbock show, you'll know that it had a
ton of covers with lots of random people singing with short set list.
Tonight was pure Dream Theater. No covers at all except for an 'Enter
Sandman' segment thrown into Peruvian Skies. The set list was definitely
longer, with 'Anna Lee', 'Hollow Years', 'Lines in the Sand', 'Trial of
Tears', and 'Ytsejam' (Fasten Your Seatbelts version) added. As James puts
it, "Where the f*** were you all last night in Lubbock?!" =)
I guess this means that the more people DT play in front of, the more
down-to-business they become. Lubbock's turnout was maybe a half or a third
of the Fort Worth. I say 'down-to-business', but as you all know they still
looked like they were having a ton of fun up there.
I didn't hang around afterwards for autographs. One of the workers said
they probably weren't going to come out. So my aching legs agreed to go to
my truck and drive home to a cozy bed.
I saw Ryan Webb again. He was at the Lubbock show last night as well. This
guy flew in from California to see all three Texas shows. Talk about a true
fan. =) I also met Ken and Nicole McWatters briefly. They were among the
first three people in line. I signed their banner for Portnoy. During the
concert James held up this one banner, but Mike Portnoy made sure that
Nicole's banner also made an appearance on stage. That was very cool.
Anyways, it was nice meeting you guys, even if it was for two seconds. I'm
sure I'll see you all again at the San Antonio show!
I got the show on tape, but the tape sucks. I have a lot of either 1)
dropouts or 2) blank spaces due to bad connection to my machine or
something. It's a shame, because the quality of what's there sure sounds
great. =)
Oh well, gotta go to bed. I'm exhausted. My back and legs are killing me
after standing for 8 hours straight two nights in a row. Not to mention the
hours spent in the waiting line that I had a DAT recorder in my crotch,
which isn't too comfortable. I'm sure somebody else like Brian Cox got this
show on tape, so at least it's out there somewhere.

people don't like him, but hey, lots of people didn't like the sound of
distorted guitar when it first came out. Open up your minds, people. Devin
will hopefully be someday recognized as the genius that he is.
