Ah...Fish can fit in this position. But...David Sylvian? I like his singing
on Damage and The First Day. IMHO, Sylvian's voice is not suitable for prog
metal music at all. It's kinda cold.

My choice for the new DT singer would be Alberto Piras from Deus Ex Machina.
This guy can sing in any range. Oh...should I add Mr.Doctor from Devil
Doll? That would be the scariest singer. :)

Get all Ozric albums if you have plenty of $$$ to spend....and Deus Ex
Machina, Present, Univers Zero, Magma, Djam Karet, Anekdoten, Anglagard,
etc....lots of them. You can take a look at the prog cd's list on my music

Maybe it's just me, but the fact that singers as divserse as
Devin Townshend, Sebastian Bach, Ray Adler and Zak Stevens have been
suggested as JLB's replacement is a testimony to how great of a singer JLB
    is.

Hmm. . . after much thought, I'd say Dave Deluco from Mystic Fishook would
be a great choice. He's a very good singer, though I've never heard him in
the upper registers. If you have no idea who this guy is, go to

What I love is : when an album I've had for quite some time finally
'clicks'. I'm talking about the Galactic Cowboys (first?) self-titled
album. An album I picked up at least 5years ago... prolly closer to six or
seven, in a second hand store. Anyway, i thought they might be worth a
listen back then as I heard a few good things about them... *but* upon
listening, found I didn't like them. I thought they were just a bunch of
slow, monotonous crappy grungified/beatlesified/kingXified songs. Well, the
CD's been in my player for a while now(one of those 60 disc players), so it
rears it's head every now and then, due to random function, or currently
being 2discs behing LegendII (which I'm listening to a LOT, & is absolutely
brilliant, and mindboggling btw). Anyway, usually it goes straight off
again.. until last week - suddenly is was bright, harmonious and beautiful
to my ears! Don't know how or why, but suddenly I 'discovered' a little gem.

    Thanks,
Zajk (still wondering how the human mind work's, and in particular, how his
    mind works)

    :-)

No, I couldn't imagine Devin filling in as a DT replacement singer even
though DT does match his own initials ;)

He's just too pissed off sounding to sing for DT. He does do well for
    Steve Vai, though.

Well, if DT were going to replace James, I would drive/fly/use my mystical
powers of telepotation to get to Manhattan and kick the shit out of Mike,
Derek, and the Johns. If they actually were to give James the boot, it had
better be because James did something absolutely awful, like rape an elderly
condor, because James is the best fucking singer I think they're gonna find.
The only way to save their ass would be to send Gary Charone into a tobacco
detox clinic and then, maybe, they might have have a decent, although poor,
replacement. James has much better fashion sense than Gary, I think, as
well. I think Gary's watched too many Sprite commercials and started
raiding RuPaul's closet. Image may be nothing, but people are still gonna
snicker at a guy in a blouse.

I hope James never hears about any of this. I'd be kind of miffed if all of
my fans were discussing who my replacement would be all the time. I think
this is the 4th time in a year I've heard this same discussion. We might as
well start a discussion on who's gonna replace Skadz as Ytse-Moderator.

And the only reason I could see James leaving would be either for family
problems, or to play Enjolras in Les Miserables, otherwise he could have no
excuse. Besides, all the Ytsettes would miss James' ass in tight leather
    pants. I know I would. =)

I don't quite get it. I like Dream Theater just the way it is.. Why change

a good singer.. If it sounds good, it's good, to me.) but what about the

Someone (Jason Birzer I think) asked about an Ozrics date in San Fran
and whether they were formally touring. According to SF's local print
media Ozrics are playing on June 5th at, I believe, the Fillmore, but
there are no dates indicated on the Web yet (including that one) and I
think the show is a one-off, or part of a very localized California
minitour. The official Ozrics site doesn't indicate any US tour
dates as of yesterday, but indicated a show was possible in Sacramento
due to some industry or label deal.

So it appears this isn't a big tour, alas and damnit. Hmmmm, $550
minimum for airfare to San Fran and back; I can't QUITE fuckin afford
it. And believe me, I wish I could. :)

(I hope this hasn't been trashed to the ground before; I've been skimming the jams by sender for a while... :))

Here's a sobering idea for a topic: what songs should DT play while they're opening for ELP and Deep Purple? There are many factors to consider:

-- They'll have 45 minutes, at most an hour, which is approximately, oh, 2.3 ACOSs. :) See below and plan carefully..... -- They'll be opening before an audience that will likely be older and a bit less "metal" than us freeks at a regular headlining show. This is a pretty tough call: DP rocks pretty hard, but ELP are generally a lot softer. It'll be a mixed bag, but I'd be more inclined toward softer songs, with a few well-spaced wake-up calls. :) (But see below regarding heckling.....)

-- When you're opening for someone, ESPECIALLY when you're DT and have limited radio penetration in many cities, every second is precious. You have the potential to make dozens, hundreds of new fans....and the potential to piss it all away with songs that either don't impress a non-DT audience or which turn out poorly (for whatever reason).

-- The setlist should be relatively undemanding on James' voice, for several reasons. If it gets strained and DT are still contractually obligated to play, then they won't be impressing too many potential fans (never mind the band's musical prowess, people tend to focus on the candy-- err, vocals). Plus, it probably took a few favors to arrange this opening gig and it'd be a shame if they had to cancel dates and miss opportunities to Convert the Masses.

-- Just as some of us did to Big Wreck and Full On The Mouth, there may well be devoted ELP or DP fans who will heckle our beloved DT during their set. If DT hits the ground running and has few (or no) long breaks or periods of relative quiet, THE HECKLERS CAN'T MAKE TOO MUCH DIFFERENCE because they'll be drowned out by DT. (Until the Flying Wedge of Ytsejammers arrives and.....silences them, painlessly if necessary. :))

Some things to think about. I'd definitely include "PMU" and "TTT", which leaves about 25 minutes. "Surrounded"? Schweeeet, but there are those quieter parts that would just beg some idiot drunk to start yelling at Our Guys. "UaGM"? Also schweet, but it's a bit demanding on James' voice. "LtL"? Yummy, but at c. 11 minutes it's a big chunk. Some instrumentals might be a wise course to steer..... "Erotomania"? "Ytsejam"? A nice juicy medley?

Let's see some thoughts here. :)
