If James should get the boot, i'd LOVE to see Devin Townsend take over!!
Then he could actually do some singing (ala Vai and Working Man) and not
just his explosive screeching (SYL and Ocean Machine).

Of course I'd also love to see Devy Wevy take over in Pantera but that's
    another story...

    Just kidding!

So if someone had to take over for JLB on vocals, my vote would be for
Geoff Tate. Maybe that's too obvious.

How about Graham Bonnet? I'm sure he'd jump at the chance (If he's not
collecting Social Security). He's recorded with Richie Blackmore,
Micheal Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Chris Impelliteri, etc.
I'm sure he'd like to add Petrucci to his list of "guitars gods I've
    worked with"...

Sebastian is a killer singer and would fit the James LaBrie mold.
What I would do though is try to do something a little different. Most
Prog bands have singers that are Geoff Tate/Ray Alder/James LaBrie
clones. What I would do is go for a more "commerical singer" like
Dave Grohl in Foo Fighters. That way it gives it something different
    and perhaps unique.

waiting in the large line just pouring from the front gates. A
bazillion of ppl I've met throughout the past couple years (just from
following prog metal and the local prog scene) found our group and cut
in line, it was fantastic. Fun for the whole ytse-family. :D Yes, Mike
Bahr was even there with bootlegs in hand, he even snuck past the
security and yes, the ytsejam tailgaters for his pre-show rituals with
Portnoy (I guess). Thanks for gettin' the backstage passes for us Mike,
we appreciate it! ;) Bah, we didn't need 'em anyways....

So I reached into my pocket to make sure I still had my paint pen, and
the OTHER pen (blue ink) I had in that same pocket had spontaneously
combusted! Ink all over the place! And my hands were very very very
blue. Without a hanky (other than my do-rag, and that was being used
for a far more important purpose) available I proceeded to wipe my blue
hands against the wall of the establishment, and moved all my personal
on-hand possessions in the other pocket.

You're wondering why I'm babbling on about this. Let me explain that
the EMI crew working the club that night were complete ASSHOLES, each
and every one of them, aside from the two women who were keeping the
crowd behind the yellow tape after the show. I walked up to the guy
doing the pat-down search in front of the entrance, and while reaching
for my wallet and keys, my $5 silver paint pen fell out onto the
ground. The manager behind the doorguy picked it up before either of us
could blink and said I couldn't go into the club with it. After trying
to convince him that I wasn't going to tag anything with it, and that it
was for the band to autograph my guitar with, he placed it on the ledge
and said "Well, I'll leave it right here, and if it's still here after
the show, you can have it." So he wanted to be a dickwad.

No matter, I had plenty of blue ink all over my hands. I walked right
into the bathroom, got my hands wet with soap and water, and just
splashed blue ink ALLLLL over the bathroom stalls, walls, mirrors, with
everybody cheering me on ('cuz just about everybody saw the paint pen
incident and was enjoying watching me cussing about the doorguy).

    >;P

Anyways, I tried settling down by finding a nice place to sit on a table
that wasn't being used for ANYTHING...nobody was around it...until i sat
down on it and one of the EMI staff barked at me to get off of it,
"Hey! You can't sit on the tables!"

Not that my legs didn't mind. I had only been standing for 4 straight
    hours prior to that moment.

The lights dimmed and I found a place in the middle of the floor where
most of the AZ ytsecrew was hanging out, and Full on Mouth started their
set. Aside from the uh...4 fans in the front left side of the stage
area, the entire club was standing dead still, silent, and smirking at
one another. It got so bad I became the entertainment for the ytsecrew,
making oddball faces at the band hoping it would provoke some sorta
reaction in their playing. Not that a D chord in 4/4 in D tuning isn't
a tough thing to distract anybody from....

Eh, they just weren't my cup o' joe. Ala Gravity Kills, they had to
press a "Play" button to start their act. They were real nice guys but
whoever tagged these guys on the same ticket as Dream Theater either
needs to be shot or work at McDonalds as the janitor. You gotta be a
fuckin' idiot to pair these two bands together.

I say import Michael Kiske from Germany. If Maiden was too stupid
to pick up on him, and if DT was in need of a new singer, then I'd like to
see Kiske in DT. I just dig his voice. He seems to have a range
compatible with DT, has always sounded pretty emotional to me, and did a
fine job in Helloween. However, I think a sadder day would be Petrucci
    leaving DT.

Townsend has to have THE most annoying voice I have ever heard, he
    ruined

Well, I'm 6'2 and approx 205lbs. If I get to a concert early, I'll still wind up not
in front... The only way you can avoid the tall monsters is by moving around them. It's
really not their fault they're as tall as they are. It's the way they are and they have to
live their lives being big. It's actually easier if you are small to get to the front of a
crowd. You really just have to say 'excuse me' and any decent person would let you through...
I mean, what is the guy gonna say - "no?"
As for the moshing bit - argh - moshing is just another dance, man. It's an
aggressive dance, I'll give you that. It's a dance in which one can get seriously injured,
I'll give you that too. But, in concert, there's really no stopping it. If you want to
express yourself, you just do it in any way you know how. A lot of Metal (Dream Theater is
still concidered Prog Metal right?), if not ALL metal, causes moshing. It's there and it's not
    going away. Sorry :|

    <<Hypothetical replacements for JL...>>

Sebastian Bach? No way. Not only does he lack the "Mature Vibe" needed for
DT but I've heard that his voice has been toasted by too much screaming. If
James did leave, I think that there are a number of currently unknown
singers who could vie for the job.

This reminds me, the cover songs on ACOS represent bands with some of the
best singers in rock history (Mercury, Perry, Plant, etc.). LaBrie does a
fine tribute to each and is probably a better technical singer than any of
them (except maybe for Perry). However, when given a choice, I'd still
would rather hear the original artists sing these songs than JL in pretty
much every case. I think that this is a testament to how much character the
original singers gave their own songs.

On the flipside, it's fun to envision some of these legends fronting DT. In
particular, could you imagine Freddie Mercury (if he were still alive, duh)
on stage with DT singing Pull Me Under, Wait for Sleep, Caught in a Web,
Burning my Soul or Lines in the Sand? Personally, I think that's a
combination that would have worked great. Comments anyone?

PS: Sammy Hagar would probably take the job:-)

Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater is Elvis Presley's illegitimate son. Proof
has been discovered by.examining old podiatrical records of Elvis and
comparing them to Mr. Sherinian's. Revealed is that they have similar
phalangelical structures and that also, as well, do they have the same
fungal patterns growing on their toenails. He is now seeking the advice of
a legal professional to obtain part of what he claims is his rightful
inheritance. Elvis fans across the world are in a disfervor over the
    situation.

James LaBrie was last seen carrousing through Arizona in a rented Audi with
hair glued all over it. Reports are that he's bald as a cue ball and was
growling at innocent pedestrians like a grizzly bear. Supposedly he is
mourning the loss of his beloved caribou and rockchuck, "Bert and Ernie,"
respectively, who were forcefed 50 pounds of effervescent tablets by 2 KGB
agents known as Boris and Natasha. They were last seen fleeing the crime
scene muttering something about "No more moose and squirrel."

John Myung finally got that voice box and tracheotomy he always wanted. He
no longer has to embarrasingly make finger gestures and grunts to
    communicate with other band members.

Mike Portnoy was stated as saying that his dream has always been to be a
horticulturalist and that drumming is just his last step before enrolling in
college to become such. Rumor has it his ambitions are leading towards the
development of a "soy bomb." Scientists are baffled as to what the potency
of such a weapon might be.

John Petrucci thinks that Mike Portnoy is an idiot.

Kevin Moore sighting: Last report is that he was entertaining children in
Jersey City by removing his prosthetic testicles and playing jacks with
them. He was soon accosted by the local law enforement officials and is now
awating trial for indecent exposure and lewd and lascivious conduct. He
faces a $1000 fine and up to 1 year imprisonment. Said children believed
the penalty to be unjust and killed several of their schoolmates. Mr. Moore
claimed to have no involvement in the schoolground massacre.

Back to your regularly scheduled jamming.

Hell yeah!! Outside of the prog scene those two are definitely my
favourite singers. I also think that they are so versatile that they
could sing just about *anything*. Just listen to the many cover versions
that FNM did (I'm still grieving about their breakup). I also seem to be
one of the very few people who think that Devin's interpreatation of
Natural Science was one of the highlights of the Working Man tribute.

Mike and Dev probably wouldn't fit into DT because of their
personalities, but I'd love to hear both of them singing a few DT songs.
I'm still convinced that James is the best that could happen to DT after
    Charlie's departure though...

BTW: Does anyone have some information about Devin's new "Infinity"
project and Mike Patton's new band "Fantomas"? I also heard that a new
"Mr. Bungle" album was on the way...

I believe that Ray Alder of FW would be one of the few good choices if James
were to leave. His voice has a huge range (probably greater than JLB) and his
voice is beautiful and full of emotion. The Savatage guy would be good too.

    Message-ID: <001901bd8641$ca82ae00$4100430c@dwhit>

Just got back from my 5-hour trek back home from the Lubbock show. A short
summary follows, as it's 6AM in the morning and I haven't had sleep in a day
and a half. A longer review of this show and the upcoming Ft. Worth and San
Antonio shows are coming later as well.

According to James, this show was the most laid back and strange concert the
band's ever done. Lots and lots of covers, James seemed to get a little
pissed at how many covers they did as shown by, "Ok, do you want covers or
do you want Dream Theater?" Portnoy's fat drum tech sang a song which was
funny but actually sounded good. Derek Sherinian ran out front and sang
like Roth on a Van Halen song which was hilarious. Portnoy mooned towards
Sherinian's direction twice. The one and only drumming competitor didn't
get the point and kept on playing when Portnoy tried playing, so the whole
thing seemed like a jumbled mess. It was freaking hot in the club. Very
short setlist. No "Lines in the Sand" or "New Millenium" like I've always
heard were part of the setlists in previous concerts. No "Ytsejam", either.
"Voices" made it, which was one of the songs I was hoping for. A lot of
other similar things that have happened in recent concerts happened, too,
but I'm just trying to point out differences. I talked to Portnoy
afterwards and he asked if I was going to the Ft. Worth show, and I said
yes, and he said, "Good, then you can see a real show." I also talked to
Labrie, asked him about a live album, and he said it's a very strong
possibility in the near future. They're talking to the label about it.

I was the first person in line, and I was the first and *only* person in
line from about 4:30PM until 6:00PM. I guess I arrived too early. =) But
because of that, before the concert I did get Myung's and Petrucci's
signature on the only thing on me at the time, my ticket. Then when I went
inside the guy taking tickets tore my ticket in half and gave me the half
with Myung's signature, even at the request of me to keep the ticket whole!
    So he got Petrucci's. Sucks.

About three varieties of t-shirts, a big program, and a pin were for sale.
I grabbed the black t-shirt with the pictures of the guys on front. The
program is very cool. I got everybody to sign in there, so that will be a
keepsake. Some guy got his back signed by everybody and is going to have
    those signatures tattooed on him.

I can't remember anything else at the moment, because my brain is already
sleeping on me. =) The coolest thing to me is that I got an awesome
recording of the entire concert. I thought the acoustics in the club
sucked. I couldn't hear James' voice clearly at all when I was in there,
but on the recording everything's really clear. Probably the best audience
recording I've heard from any of this tour and pre-tour so far. I listened
to the entire concert three times driving back to Dallas. Those Energizer
Lithium AA's are to thank for that lengthy listening pleasure on those
    normally power-sucking PCM-M1 DAT recorders.

The concert can be summarized as DT having a ton o' fun and still managing
to be tight throughout. Definitely worth the trip. Again, longer summary
    coming later!

No, actually, I agree with you completely...Mike Patton WOULD be a great
replacement, except he's currently in two bands which are both working on
new albums. These would be Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. He might be just a
little too wild for DT, though. Think Derek cubed.

Um, attention all! I'm searching for the proper email address of J. Kerr. He posted about a possible trade for DT's Mosaic for a select group of Rush bootlegs. Well, I replied to his listed address (digitalmusik@bigfoot.com) but it was returned. Well, if anyone knows his address, or if J Kerr reads this, please mail me at ckssrs@axiomnet.com so that this will remain off of the jam!

For the DT content: Sebastian Bach as the next JLB?!?! What are you people insane!!?!?! My goodness...thats just wrong...
