but the clockwork orange music wasnt played on that show, was it?

The first time I saw the band (on the Images And Words tour),
    >everybody - with the possible exception of Mike - was very serious, and
    >most of the fans were apparently music theory students who just stood
    >there with open mouths, drooling but not smiling. The next time I saw the
    >boys was the Awake tour, where Derek was tucked away in the corner of
    >the stage, playing music that he hadn't written. Then came the big change
    >when they did the European shows in early 97. People started smiling and
    >laughing, both on the stage and in front of it. And now the current tour -
    >Derek dressed up like a 70s dog's dinner, over-the-top stage accessories
    >(lava lamps, TVs, shaggy carpets), and suddenly lots of fun for everybody,
    >drum stick juggling, instruments are exchanged, Nicky Lemons is born
    >and dies, great cover songs AND some of the best Dream Theatre
    >performances ever. Anybody else think like this?

I was talking with mauricio about this, I dont know if it's because Derek
is now on the band, I dont think so, but we were talking about how Petrucci
and the rest of the band have been going to the unformal side, I mean, on
the LIT Video Petrucci is wearing a silk shirt (or whatever you call it)
and most of the band was pretty formal, just a few jokes from Portnoy and
Moore, now Petrucci wears GI Joe and football shirts, they make more jokes
on stage and they seem to be happier, just my opinion here.
by the way, can anyone explain me the nicky lemons thing?

    >Here's the beginning's of the plan:
    >1. Someone find out what the email address is and post it here.
    >2. Someone (anyone) post that email address to the other mailing lists.
    >3. EVERYONE start emailing the hell out of MTV. Throw in some catchy
    >phrases to get the email on the air (they always pick the cool sounding
    ones).
    >4. Continue to tell everyone you know to start requesting...and don't stop.
    >
    >How's that for a plan?

Someone should post the final plan on music newsgroups, I could add the
plan to my homepage if you want to, maybe UACM will do it, if not let me
    know and I'l do it.

    > And even better than that, my brother was the first of the
    >audience to play with Mike, that was REALLY cool! Of course, he didn't
    >get the last part right, the "secret knock" code, but then, the second
    >screwed it up after hearing my bro mess it up. =)

I lauughed when this happened the first time but I thought "ok, the guy
didnt catch it" but I couldnt stop laughing when this happened the second
time, everybody noticed the first time, I wonder if it was unporpose

    >The only bad part was
    >having to wait forever for the bus, but Mike stopped it and him and
    >James came out, apologized, saying they didn't know we were out there,
    >and signed everyone's stuff. Oh yeah, and Mike said to tell the jam
    >"hey". =)

yeah, Mike is pretty cool, he stopped the bus and told us to come, the bad
thing is that I didnt get to know Petrucci, yeah, I remember that Portnoy
said "say the jam hello", so you were the guy who handed the CD from the
fan club, right? I was just in front of you, he asked you if you had the
new one too, he said "that one kicks ass too" or something like that, James
Labrie was surprised I handed him the FIX cd to sign while I was saying I
was from Mexico, I wonder if he thought it was the mexican edition of
Falling Into Infinity or something...I dont know how much he is into
    bootlegs....that was cool.

    i suggest getting beethoven's symphonies 1-9, especially 3,5,6,7,9. i don't
know much about classical music in general, but i know that for orchestral
music beethoven is pretty damn awesome (and I mean in the sense of
awe-inspiring!). besides, he was a fiery, tortured soul, just like me!

    ha ha ha,

rush and triumph in the same sentence--i guess i understand why (both are
canadian rock bands, etc), but that's like comparing neil peart or bill

You might try Sergei Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky." The version I have is on RCA Victor Red Seal with The St. Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by
Yuri Temirkanova. Odd thing, this is actually Prokofiev's film score for a 1930's film of the same name. ;)

Yes, I've actually seen the film... but that's another story.

i like Fish a lot, but Hogarth is awesome. if you like fish era of Marillion, you'll probably like the earlier Hogarth era, where the songs sound more "80's". go grab a copy of Season's End. or if you like music with a bit more of a modern sound, but not "alternative" crap, go get "this strange engine" and "brave" they are my fav marillion cds with hogarth.

Secondo me, non e' vero. Non ci credo!

Samuel Jackson could probably have replied much better than I just did.

If anyone has ever wondered, as I have, where John Petrucci got those cool silk shirts for the I&W tour (and videos), I found a store in New York City with comparable threads. It's called "Porta Bella," located on everyone's favorite wide street, Broadway. Any NYC residents on this list? Go there. Shop. Indulge. Wear at your own risk.

What was really weird about my week-long trip to NYC was running into Wisha (Rachel Goldenberg) at a crosswalk! I knew if I walked around Manhattan Island long enough I'd run into someone famous. :)

Music Street Journal Number Five is available online at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/9250/.

This month`s offering features a special section devoted to Cairo, including reviews of their first album (Cairo), their latest album (Conflict and Dreams (this review was in the archive section, but has been moved back to the main section for this special)), and an interview with Mark Robertson. Also in this issue is a review of the Dream Theater concert in Chicago last month (including a short Q & A with Derek Sherinian), a review of Jon Anderson`s EarthMotherEarth ballet (by guest reviewer Anne Corbin), another review of the same ballet in the form of a poem by Wendy Vig, reviews of Under The Big Tree, Point of Ares-Enemy Glory (including a Q & A with Karen Michalson), Tony Levin-World Diary, UFO-Walk On Water, Black Sabbath-Never Say Die, Savage Garden-Savage Garden and Various Artists-Stairways to Heaven.

Archival reviews are also available there. Tour dates that are there are up are for Yes, The Mollys, Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Savage Garden and Hawkwind Strange Daze Festival. The Progressive Rock Archive Page contains reviews of albums by Anubis Spire, Ajalon, Lands End, Fish, Spock`s Beard, The Lonely Bears, Various Artists-Tales From Yesterday, Dream Theater, Tempest, Pentwater, Genesis, Nektar and Ancient Vision. There have been enough Yes reviews here to warrant their own archive page. Tony Levin is the only person who has been featured (in one project or another) in every issue thus far. With that in mind, I have devoted an entire page of my archives to those reviews.. The Progressive Metal Archive page contains reviews of Autumn Rest, Fates Warning, Divine Regale, Blue Oyster Cult, Royal Hunt, Queensryche, and Faith No More. The Non Progressive Archive holds reviews of Blue Oyster Cult, Hawkwind, The Mollys, The Drovers, Alice Cooper, Smashmouth, and Captain Beyond. In the Concert Review Archive you will find reviews of Yes and Rush. There are two interviews in the Interview Archive. One is a very in depth interview with Tony Levin and the other is with Randy George of Ajalon.

Oh, okay Stalin. So Ginger was the "HOT" one. Well some would argue that Posh Spice was the "HOT" one. But let's end this gingery flame war to peacefully observe the beauty of that now-divided quintet. (if it splits five ways it pentavides, but since this case is one leaving four that were once five together, it's actually a single body becoming two, or a DI-vision.)

A long time ago I wondered about questions that could receive a different answer every time I asked it. In recent years I was intrigued to find that "Who's your favorite spice girl?" was quickly moving in on "What time is it?" Wasn't it beautiful to hear so many different answers of the people I asked? So few repeats? Such a variety of reasonings as to why a particular spice was someone's favorite?

"Because she can bench more than me!" "Gucci skirts are where it's at, man!" "She growls like a grizzly bear, and I like grizzly bears!" "She's got red hair!" "I can pretend she's 12 when I'm bangin' her!"

*sigh* if only Dream Theater could evoke such a variety of answers...

Adam Cook asked and I thought I'd post this...

Guitar World magazine - July 1998

Explorer's Club - Age of Impact (3 1/2 stars) Liquid Tension Experiment (2 stars)

One of the few successful purveyors of Eighties-style shredding around, Dream Theater's John Petrucci has managed to thrive at a time when technical razzle-dazzle is no longer in vogue. On these two side projects, he teams up with some heavyweight players to showcase his high-flying style. Explorer's Club adds a new twist to classic Seventies progressive rock (Yes guitarist Steve Howe even plays acoustic on one track). Bolstered by the monster rhythm section of bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Terry Bozzio, petrucci unleashes some of the most biting, from the gut playing of his career on Age of Impact. Liquid Tension Experiment is another prefab supergroup. Assisting Petrucci on this all-instrumental shred-fest is King Crimson bassist Tony Levin, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and ex-Dixie Dregs keyboardist Jordan Rudess, but unfortunately, there are few rousing melodies to speak of - just self-indulgent, solo-mad forrays for the most part. It's no surprise that this endeavor was written, rehearsed and recorded during an intense one-week period; it sounds more like an overblown jam session, with little inspiration or imagination, than a coherent album. If Liquid Tension Experiment ever makes another album, they should take more than a week out of their lives to do it. - Joe Lalaina.

    That's it folks. E-mail GWEdit@aol.com if you disagree :-))))

Wow - another Jen-type person. Now we can really confuse everyone. ;) Anyhow, hello and welcome...

Jenny did say: >I'm one of them new Falling Into Infinity fans who totally, completely >fell in love with DT without listening to any of their other albums.

Just a curiosity - how did you get into the band? Was a song off FII getting airplay, or did you know someone with the album already?

    >I signed onto this mailing list a couple weeks ago, and at that time, >everyone was talking about DT selling out.

Any time anyone talks about "selling out," regardless of whether I even like the band or not, it kind of grinds my gears. I mean, yes, musicians are business people in one sense, but I think, first and foremost, they're artists. Wouldn't we all love to get paid for doing our very favorite thing, for our acts of expression? I don't think anyone intends to go out and make a "hit record," except for those rare pre-fab cases.

    >Well, today, I went out and got Images and Words......and what the hell?

I've grown rather partial to "Awake" myself. Still, it was one that had to grow on me. Give I&W some more spins and tell us if you still feel the same way. I'm not trying to say that it absolutely must become your favorite DT album, but I know that I often have to listen to something multiple times to really absorb it.

Okay, if you've read this far, here's what is included:

    1. The cd, of course. The cd is over 74 minutes of playing time. 2. The cd comes in a standard jewel case. 3. The jewel case has a cd jacket with graphics on front and back; and a back cover, with track listing on back. 4. The cd has a label with title printed on it. 5. Shipping is included in US. Canada add $.50 and anywhere else add $1.50 (except Australia & Japan, add $2.50). I use bubble mailers to send the cd in (or a priority mailer box, if you're ordering more than 2 sets) to guarantee you cds arrive safely to you. 6. The whole package is guaranteed to satisfy you. If for any reason you are not satisfied, just return everything within 2 weeks of receiving it, and I will refund you money (less shipping). I will also provide references upon request.

Okay, I think I've covered everything. If you have any questions, please ask.
