    I had a moment yesterday...

after tossing up my hands in exasperation yet again over the drivvle that K-
rock was once again spewing, I lunged towards my tuning button and the only
    hope of escape...89.5 WSOU...

Okay, these guys play some pretty hardcore stuff most of the time (this is the
ONLY radio station I have heard Type O on!) - but that did not prepare me for
the moment. I had my thoughts, but it took a while to sink in that they were
playing PMU! Alright, I keep hearing that this is their biggest radio hit,
but the only songs by DT I ever heard on the radio were from Awake - Lie, and
the Mirror, way back in the day (I think that was pre-wuss Q104.6 (?) ).
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aight, just had to share the moment, it most definitely made my day yesterday.
    Wiggin' out,
    Alex

Well, to learn more about the band you can go to http://www.ivorygate.com/fw
and check out all kinds of info, even find out how to sign up for the Parallels
mailing list... As to what to get next, if you liked Awaken, you might want to
get Spectre Within (still has John Arch on vocals), everything from No Exit
forward has Ray Alder on vocals just so you know... any of the Ray Alder era
discs are great, get either A Pleasant Shade of Gray, Parallels or Perfect
    Symmetry...

Steve H has a great voice, very different from Fish, but incredibly
emotional... Season's End is a really great disc, and This Strange Engine has
some great stuff on it as well...

    hey everybody! (hey louie!)

i've been reading the jams lately and have discovered a disturbing trend...the 'let's get DT on MTV through the total request program' thread. First off, even though my first thought is that the whole thing is fixed to start with, i think that it is worth a shot on the off chance that it ain't fixed. second, i see a lot of posts that say 'i'm in, just tell me when and what video'. At this rate, we will never get the task done. somebody has to take charge to get his thing underway...I say if we do it at all, we should vote for the 'hollow years' video on (maybe) Friday june 5th. (just an arbitrary time and date...i don't know when the votes are supposed to be sent or if there is a better or more current video that would better represent the awesome talent of DT).

Chuck PS anybody who recognizes the hey louie reference probably watches too much eMpTyV. (yes, i used to watch 'that' station alot, but not very often anymore) "I want to dip my balls in it!" - Louie

    >I couldn't disagree more. Voices has one guitar solo. Beyond that >where's the virtuosity. It has time changes but all DT's songs have |>that. My favorite DT songs are ACOS, TTT, Metropolis and Erotomania.

    >I think that these songs have the most virtuostic playing of DT. And >ACOS and TTT, in addition, have very catchy melodies and hooks required >for a great song.

What I can't belive is that Voices is not up on most favorite of all time!

While I can't change anyone's opinion, I must dissagree on this one. Voices IMO is one of DT's better songs (they're all good, so a DT ranking system, is strewed.) THe melody is supurb and while JP's solo has been criticized by being too much like Hamlet, I belive is an incredible solo (especially when he plays it live right in front of your face). Especailly when you regard that Voices is only the 2nd part of the trilogy (Erot, Voices, Silent) then it's a wonderful combination of DT.

While there is no DT song I dislike, I love some more than others... and I must say, its difficult to rank them... but I think my top 3 would go in this order....

    1. ACOS 2. Learning to Live 3. Tied Voices, Metropolis

    Hey,

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, since I haven't read a jam in a while, but Divine Regale is looking for a new singer. I have no idea what happened between the band and their old singer, but I can't say I'm upset. DR lives a few miles up the road from my town; I went to the local metal CD store, which has musician ads on a bulletin board, and saw that DR was looking for a new singer. Hopefully they'll get someone who doens't want to be Geoff Tate. If someone would fill me in on what happened, I'd appreciate it. And if anyone wants the name and number to contact to send DR a demo tape, just e-mail me.

    hey all

i don't know if anybody out there has heard of the new format of video that will supposedly make your dvd players obsolete (those of us who have dvd, anyway). DIVX is a tool of corporate greed that must be stopped. Imagine buying a movie at your local movie house (you own this thing, forever & ever). Now imagine having to pay for it every single time you want to watch it. Now imagine big brother knowing tha you are watching it(because of the phone line continuously hooked up to it, 'for billing purposes'). Also imagine not being able to loan the movie to a friend without paying a fee. I don't know about you, but i think that i would be getting royally screwed if i went ahead and got this media.

for more info and to do your part to stop the corporate greed go to http://www.bandivx.com

Note to mike bahr: you may want to check this out before you decide to get into the dvd area (which i am pretty sure would be in the far future anyway).

This MTV "Total Request" idea that someone posted, and which people seem to be getting enthused about, reminds me a lot of a similar effort that some Jammers were attempting back in 1996. Only back then the idea was to write to "feedback@mtv.com" en masse to request Dream Theater videos. Didn't work back then either. =)

Anyway, I can't believe I'm resending something *I* wrote (ego problem, you know), but below is a post which I sent to the Jam way back in September of 1996. It was my response to the other idea about emailing MTV, and it works just as well for this one. It's still more or less relevant. (Hey, it predates "Just Let Me Breathe"...)

For those of you who saw the letter the first time around, apologies for the repeat.

[Hi to all the Jammers who were at the completely-kickass Caravan Of Dreams show in Fort Worth -- that was me who was second in line.]

    OK, back to lurking.

To: MTV <feedback@mtv.com> ]From: Scotch <anthem@virginia.edu>

    Dear MTV,

I am writing to inform you a little bit about a band you may or may not have heard of, called Dream Theater.

Today a large militant activist group is planning on bombarding you with email in a massive organized attempt to get you to play videos by this band. This is a very dangerous, inflammatory extremist organization who will literally stop at nothing to spread their "Prog Rock" dogma across the globe.

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM.

Right now you may be thinking, "Well, I don't see what's wrong with playing a video by this band Dream Theater; I'm sure they have a nice grungy radio-friendly style and a gritty, raw, brooding image that will appeal to our target demographics."

DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE FOOLED.

There is a lot you do not know about this Dream Theater. They are not normal. They refuse to play by the Rules of the Game which MTV has spent years carefully constructing.

I am pleading with you, on behalf of all of your loyal, glassy-eyed, empty-headed, Airwalk-wearing, flannel-clad, spoonfed MTV-watching sheep: Do not give in to these prog rock thugs! They are a threat to our basic ideas about music, culture, and our very way of life!

Think of the far-reaching ramifications if you decide to promote Dream Theater. They actually have the nerve to play technically demanding music, with poetic, thought-provoking, literary lyrics. Their songs are long, sometimes even longer than "November Rain." What message will this send to the Youth of Today? It will imply that, to become a famous rock band, one must actually have talent, training, and an attention span! This goes against our whole ethic! This is nothing less than blasphemy, and must be prevented.

YOU MUST NOT BE SWAYED FROM YOUR BUZZ-CLIP PROGRAM ROTATIONS.

Oh, I am now having nightmarish visions of John Senzio gaping brainlessly into the camera as, in the voice of a frightened child, he stammeringly attempts to introduce the latest "single" from this Dream Theater... and once the song ends, twelve minutes later, he is reduced to a gibbering simp curled up in the fetal position on the studio floor. Just think of the lovely Jenny McCarthy; how would she react to this Dream Theater? Their music would make her little pretty face implode under the crushing weight of her own sheer incomprehension. Think about those wonderful, beautiful, shapely, buff people on The Grind, as they stand there, blinking, looking around frantically like hunted animals as their minds wrestle with the mathematics of dancing in 7/8 - 4/4 - 9/8 meters. I shudder to think.

The concept that these Dream Theater fans do not seem to grasp is that MTV is not meant to appeal to us musically; otherwise why would so many popular bands be so popular? People like me, who truly appreciate MTV for what it is, *demand* to be manipulated. We must have our simple minds pumped full of images that you select. We must have our sound bites and tag lines. We must have our obtuse, casually scribbled lyrics and droning vocals, backed by grungy guitars and a phat dance beat.

YOU MUST GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, AFTER YOU TELL US WHAT THAT IS.

You slipped up a few years ago, when you allowed this Dream Theater's "Pull Me Under" to be played. This caused irreparable damage, resulting in vast underground legions of Dream Theater fans to appear. Now they are amassing their forces in an effort to overthrow us.

Society is not ready for this Dream Theater. They have the power to destroy us. Yes, they are the anti-grunge, and we must not allow them into the fort lest our ultimate plans of zombification of the masses for world domination slip from us forever.

YOU MUST BE STRONG AND RESIST THESE INVADERS.

Again, be forewarned of this group of "Ytsejammers". They will resort to guerrilla tactics if provoked, especially during this time of year... many of them are rather restless, as the season is approaching when their leader, who goes by the name Bafu Vai, will return to their ranks. Do not delay in refusing their efforts! When this leader rejoins them, there is no telling what they might do.

DO NOT GIVE IN. WE ARE ALL DEPENDING ON YOU.

    Be afraid.

Best regards for a promising future,

    Scott Herman.

ps. Congratulations on your recent remaking of Metallica. We doubted it could be done, but you have truly outdone yourselves in totally twisting the integrity and power out of what used to be a sadly uncompromising band.

    pps. Same with Pearl Jam.

    ppps. More Alanis, please.

pppps. I would have written more, but "Singled Out" is on.
