On ACOS I think there is a drum overdub at some parts.
At least as I hear it... Did MP really record some extra
    tracks? Any opionion? Mr. 420?

    Bungle (not a drummer)

P.S. I can say it exactly which part I hear the overdub when
    I'm at home...

Just wanted to say thanks to Mike for the explanations about the Vid. I
think it's great! Regarding the WOWOW material, I for one was not at all
disappointed by the inclusion these vids since I hadn't seen them
before. I'm just sheltered I guess! Question: On my copy, the sound
drops out very briefly in a number of places including the production
video of Silent Man (weird), is this just my copy or is this a problem
    with all of the tapes?

About Phish. I saw them in August with some friends who are big fans. I
took them to see DT and they took me to see Phish. Let's just say that
our tastes in music are pretty different since I didn't think any more
of Phish than they thought of OFB. I will say this about the Phish
concert though, DT's sound man could take some lessons from the guy who
did the sound for that show. All of the instruments were clean and
clear with no one instrument standing out or too laid back. I sure John
M and Derek would kill for that kind of mix. Both DT shows I saw on this
latest tour (Vanderbilt's and Irving Plaza) had sub par sound by
comparison, IMO. I thought JM was buried and would apply Damon's comment
about Derek's inconsistent levels on the vid, which is consistent with
what I heard live. From what I'm reading here, sounds like I should
expect the same from the new CD.

I would love to be able to judge for myself, but IT'S FREAKING MONDAY
ALREADY AND CDNOW STILL HASN'T DELIVERED MY FREAKING CD YET!!!
    ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Sorry, I'm calmed down now. I actually took the time to try and come
with a top 20 list. I don't know how many of you bothered, but that was
harder than shit, man. Between DT, Rush, Yes, and Dixie Dregs I could
easily have completed the 20. I guess if was to be stranded on a desert
island with only 20 CDs I wouldn't have much variety. Any way, I assumed
that wasn't the purpose of the exercise and limited those bands to about
10 entries so that I could include some other much deserving stuff. I
guess what I'm saying is that there's a lot of great music out there and
this poll actually got me thinking, "You know, I should listen to more
of the other great music I own besides just my few favorite groups."
Looking forward to see how the poll turned out and hoping enough of you
submitted a top 20 list to make it statistically meaningful.

    I'm done now, I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings this time ; )

    Hi all

quite a lot to get through in this one, so let's start with the Spock's
    Beard gig in
    Offenbach, Germany, last night.

Enchant were the support band. They seem to be competent musicians,
    especially the
drummer, but I found the songs to be about as interesting as watching paint
dry. The guys appear to think that they are a prog band and that means
    stretching each song to
at least 10 minutes, even if the ideas behind the song are exhausted after
    just 3 minutes.
I retired to the bar for the duration. Then came Spock's Beard. It was the
    second time
I'd seen them, so I knew roughly what to expect, but it's almost impossible
    for me to
tell you just how frigging excellent these guys were. I've rarely seen so
    many people
smiling at a concert before, both on the stage and in front of it. From the
    first second
both the band and the audience were fully into the gig. The most obvious
    thing about
the band is Neal Morse. He writes excellent songs, is a brilliant live
    performer and has
fantastic stage presence without being pushy - he just belongs center-stage
    front. I often
had the impression he looked like he would start telling jokes. Musically,
    the lads were
as tight as a duck's arsehole (which is widely known to be water-tight), all
    songs being
delivered perfectly, and possibly just a touch rockier and heavier than on
    the albums.
Ryo Okumoto's antics would pose a serious threat for Derek, and Dave Meros
    sounded
so much like Chris Squire that it was frightening (that Rickenbacker bass
    sound is just
so good). Nick D'Virgilio's drumming skills are being wasted when he plays
    for Genesis
    - he has a fine touch that a lot of drummers simply don't have, and Alan
    Morse rounded
everything off perfectly. But it was so obvious that the guys were having a
    real ball up
there, and this enthusiasm jumped across to the audience, who passed it back
    to the
band, who passed it back... This was one of the most memorable live
    performances
that I've seen by any band ever. Period. Neal's piano went out for a couple
    of minutes
and he entertained us while it was being repaired by playing Horizons and
    bits of
Supper's Ready. Other highlights included Thoughts, including all the weird
    vocal
sections and the first encore of Squonk with Nick singing and Neal on drums.
    On a
scale of 1 to 10 this gig went off scale - a truly wonderful and memorable
    evening.
If this band ever play somewhere near you, you owe it to yourself to do
    everything in
you power to get to see them. It was also nice to see the boys from Vanden
    Plas there,
too (unofficial news straight from Andy's mouth - we can expect a new album
    in the
    spring of 99).

Those of you who were pissed off with me for not buying "Once In a Livetime"
    can now
sleep peacefully, knowing that the members of Dream Theater and their
    families will not
be thrown onto the streets, because my girlfriend bought the album for me.
    Still don't like
    Hollow Years, though.

Some of you are getting worried because you got copies of the live album
    with "for
promotional use only" or what ever stamped across them. Moonspell did the
    same with
their last album, and it was done with a purpose. The owners of these CDs
    were then
eligible to take part in special tour competions. Perhaps Mike and his band
    of jolly
    pranksters are doing the same.

Review of My Dying Bride's excellent new album "34.788 %...Complete" will
    follow
shortly. (For the guy who asked, yes, "Heroin Chic" is censored on my
    version as well)

And did I mention that Mika Hakkinen rules?

    stay safe and happy listening

hmm...my OIAL and Still Life cases are exactly the same: little hinges. and
they sure don't feel sturdy. the best 2-CD case i've seen is Marillion's Made
Again...which opens from the right hand side.

wtf are we complaining about cases?@! oh wait...we're jammers. my fault.

i've only listened to both discs twice. i like em. <flame bait> and they have
solidified my belief that Awake and I&W are far better than FII. ToT
sounds like it should have been on Awake. </flame bait> and maybe i'm getting

getting tedious. yeah, they're good n stuff, but i know i'll be skipping them

Two other things I noticed..... the silent man John Myung actually smiled I couldn't believe it myself. If you watch verrry carfully during Damage Inc. right after MP sticks out his tongue it's quick but he does smile. The other thing is DS, was he trying to dance like James Brown or Jerry Lewis??? First of all, thanx to DT and of course Mp for this awesome album...

    So... heres my thoughts:

On terms of contents.. this is THE Dt cd to get, specially for people who only own one or so DT albums, getting sort of a "best of"....

Performance wise, I think everyone truly does a great job, and like everyone has said before, Derek truly SHINES here...not only because we can actually hear him, but his keyboard work just seems much more focused than other times ive heard him on the FII tour...( im not saying he didnt focus, just that here he seems to be MORE focused )

My gripes: ( hey everyone has them )

Production wise, i cant really point out what i DONT like... it just sounds "wierd" to me... i dont know why... maybe with time ill know what exactly i mean by "wierd".... for example.. ok , derek's keys are really high in the mix, which i totally LOVE, but sometimes they go a little TOO high for a few seconds (usually leads) then drop out quickly (when turning to pads or chords whatever ) sounds kinda unnatural, like if KS just decided "hey here comes a lead lemme turn up" then quickly turn down after... also... Jp sounds SO distorted, like hes breaking up all the time..specially on his solo track...that kind of got to me... even on the quiet parts of his solo it sounded distorted ( the audio not the guitar ) as for Mike's drums..well they sound very clear..every hi hat nuance is there..that rocks... although i agree with what damon said about them sounding with less tonal qualities than before.....

Ok so enough about gripes.. THIS CD JUST ROCKS!

I know it wont leave my cd player for a LONG time!, hell FII is still there! Cant wait to receive the video!
