Definitely get this disc which is currently my disc of the year (so
    far)...

I received OIAL on Friday. It was great as expected. Of course there
were some songs I wish were on it but anyway, definitely a top notch
live disc. Question, is the disc the actual recordings or were there
overdubs? I still need to get the vid.

I'm going to The Hague in a few weeks, can any of the Dutch DT fans let
me know of must see or dos?

I am currently on track 5 Scarred, and all I can say is wow. This cd represents a concert like nothing i have ever heard before. DT have really captured the live vibe with this.

Thanks to Mike Portnoy and the rest of Dream Theater for giving us one more reason to proclaim that you guys are truly one of the Best bands ever!!!!!

P.S. my copy came from cdnow and it did not have the little warning about having to return it to the manufacter. It had a little sticker saying "Two cd's The Definitive live Dream Theater" Looks like my copy is the real thing not a promo. I can now rest knowing DT got my money.

    I don't know which mp3s you've heard already, but there are 10 mp3s up on the Spock's Beard mailing list website ( http://www.spocksbeard.net ).

    >Where can I find some Angra and Dali's Dilemma MP3's?

The music link on the new Dali's Dilemma website ( http://www.dalis-dilemma.com ) doesn't seem to be working yet, but some mp3s are still up on their old website ( http://www.netwiz.net/~vertigo/music.html ).

    Jam,

Well, I just couldn't help myself... anyway, here we go...

OVERALL: A+++^100 (the ^ means raised to the power of for those who haven't had math in years) =)

I truely love this album... Contrary to popular sayings, I love James' performance here, considering the length of the show. He has gotten so much stronger over the years. While JM could be turned up a little, his presence is definately felt, which is what you want from a bass player... (only negative is during his really cool riff in Metropolis it's muddy and not defined...)

The sound is also incredible... I still want to know what Derek uses for his patches. I do agree that JP's solo sound is a little rough, but his new cruch sound is GREAT!!! (esp in Peruvian Skies)

Only big negative, which really isn't one but I just noticed... TEMPOS... Does anyone else feel that some of the songs are slightly slow? Some of them are right on (JLMB, Voices, etc), but others like Lie and even Metropolis are slightly on the slow side. It's nit picking, but when a CD is THIS good, that's all you can do!

Also, on the video, I LOVE Lifting Shadows!!!! This song is simply incredible! Also the addition of Mike and John to the vocal harmonies makes their live performaces 10000% better! I'm still having a difficult time telling if there are overdubs (which I assume there are some), but the quality of their live performances vs. LiT or LatM is incredibly better.

    Patiently waiting for X-mas

actually, it's evident that they each went in and out. you didn't notice petrucci practicing it between takes WITH the rests? I thought KS punched them in and out when I first heard it, but the X-Mas CD proved that they played the seperate parts. It's probably a bit too tough (even for these guys) to do live, though, so they make it a duet.

What do you mean by "can't believe it"? Is it too much or too little? I pay much more than US 60 cents when I'm trading with people from the US. In fact, it costs me more to send to the US than it costs you people to send me things here to Brazil.

I really don't know why, since the distances are the same (I think :-) ), but consider yourselves lucky.

And here it is! Your Top 20 favorite/all time classic recordings!

64 people voted, so 64 was the maximum number of votes a recording could get. You will notice that the number of votes drop off rapidly by the third place.

A total of 633 different titles were chosen. Full details will follow later.

    And here's the Top 20!

    #Votes/Artist/Title -------------------

50 Dream Theater - Images And Words 39 Dream Theater - Awake 21 Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime 20 Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade Of Gray 18 Rush - Moving Pictures 17 Dream Theater - Falling Into Infinity 13 Metallica - Master Of Puppets 11 Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment 11 Yes - Close To The Edge 10 Genesis - Selling England By The Pound 10 Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV 10 Metallica - ...And Justice For All 10 Queensryche - Empire 10 Symphony X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy 09 Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon 09 Rush - Hemispheres 08 Alice In Chains - Dirt 08 Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons 08 Dream Theater - Once In A Livetime 08 Shadow Gallery - Tyranny

    Some other interesting results:

A couple of "non-prog metal" titles made it fairly high in the voting.

    In the "jazzy" area:

With 7 votes, Steely Dan/Aja was tied for number 21.

With 6 votes, Miles Davis/Kind of Blue was tied for number 27.

    In the "industrial" area:

Nine Inch Nails/Pretty Hate Machine comes in with 5 votes and ties at 34.

    In the "funk-metal" category:

The Red Hot Chili Peppers/Blood Sugar Sex Magic garnered 4 votes to tie at 41.

Of course 4 votes doesn't seem like a lot, but the majority of our recordings only received 1 vote each. To be in the Top 100 (out of 633), it only took 3 votes.

The full list and more to come...

JP's guitar work still kicks major ass in that song, but the new keys part there sounds really cool. The whole album kicks ass.

Recently several people have been debating on the safety of sending cash overseas to the Fan club address in England. Well let me say that there is nothing to worry about.

I sent in my application for a NEW membership on Oct 14 and my membership packet arrived Oct 26. Yup, just 12 days to go across the ocean TWICE. I was a little worried I might not be early enough to get my membership processed in time to get the 1998 X-mas cd. Whew!

I encourage EVERYONE who was considering joining the Fan Club to get that sucker in the mail. And according to the current issue of Images and Words the New York office is CLOSED. They will NOT accept any applications, and there is currently noone that will notify you that you need to renew! I would however reccomend getting insurance, since you'll be sending cash.

So it's up to you Jammers, if you want those gems from the Rotterdam fan club show and other tidbits, send in those applications and renewals now!

    Fly High and Lay low,

    Chris
