      SonicNet contest

Due to the overwhelming response, Sonicnet hasn't been able
to choose the winners yet. I'll hopefully get a list today.
I don't know what the problem is with picking 25 names, but
        that's what they told me...

      Promo copies of OIAL

I told someone at Elektra about people buying (what seem to
be) promo copies of OIAL... They hadn't heard about it yet,
but are looking into it. They'll get back to me, as soon as
        they have more information.

      5 Years In A LIVEtime

There are currently NO plans for a DVD release. Also, there
will be an international (PAL format) release of the video.
The Dutch release date is November 6th.

Freebird is at the end of Take the time, it starts right after take the
time.... and Mody Dick is just a snippet of the main riff.. is ironically at
the very end of take the time, after the freebird jam, just like 5 seconds,
again it's the main riff.. not a part of the drum solo.

    > Fates does great at any style of music, but when > Fates is in the "Mellow" mode they really shine.

Amen, brother. You hear so many people say 'Fates is boring', which immediately makes me think that they clearly like the 'pummel me senseless' type of stuff over the 'listening patiently' school of thought.

I think Fates really hit their high point with this on 'Inside Out'. I mean, 'Islands in the Stream', 'Afterglow', etc. - how can a band with a traditional rock lineup make music that sounds like that? I swear, Jim Matheos and Frank Arestri (sp?) used to compliment each other so well it almost sounded in spots like violins, not guitars. In rock, I don't think it gets much better than that.

P.S. I agree on the Dali's Dilemma drummer comment, which I've posted here before myself. For God's sake, calm down. Empty Temor's drummer is guilty of the exact same thing, but at least he has the excuse of extreme young age to fall back on.

I'm not sure if anyone's brought this up yet, but i believe that on the Oial version of Tot, the band starts messing around with the intro to Xanadu...i know the FII version kinda reminds you of it, probably cause of the wood blocks, but now listen to what petrucci is playing on the live version...

I was just listening Awake and LATM and thought: On which song/part Petrucci plays fastest solo? :)

I have 2 suggestions right off my head:

    1) Mission Imposiblle (from Subconscious) 2) LATM - Bombay Vindaloo 2:55 - 3:13

    Anyone can beat that? ;)

Someone mentioned from Petrucci's clinics something about his speed and John trying playing at different sky-limit speeds! :) __________________________ I dunno for Labrie on OIAL (for those scolding him), but on LATM Labrie is AWESOME - clear, powerfull, not a single mistake!

Did anyone noticed certain Derek's trick in his soloing he uses quite often? It's like vibrating between 2 notes, similar to tapping technique on guitar (when forefinger is staying on certain bar and some of the other fingers is tapping on one or few bars lower!)

    What's up jammers?

Well, I walked into Virgin Megastore Phoenix this morning right when it opened, shocked to find out that they had 12 - count em, TWELVE - copies of 5YiaLT (I guess I have something to do tonight)! Very cool - I'm starting to see that people know who DT is and can at least appreciate that they're incredible musicians, even if they don't like their music much. Also, I was flipping through the new Columbia House Club catalog I get mailed every month, and lo and behold - they sell the FII tab book (one of about 10 sheet music books that they sell!) - it was even displayed prominently on the page (the very first position!). I've already had it for a few months now, but hey, I thought it was cool. Funny, those Columbia House bastards describe FII (the album) as, "Pop impact plus heavy riffs on 'New Millenium', etc." We're not talking about the Smashing Fucking Pumpkins, already! Funny how the CH music 'gods' (written with MUCH sarcasm) don't know what the fuck they're talking about...

P.S. I'm also VERY interested in finding the "Lie", "Another Day", and "Pull Me Under" singles ("Lie" especially - I LOVE "To Live Forever"). So, like someone else said (I'm too lazy to look back in the digest and find out who exactly it was), PLEASE e-mail me privately if you have a copy you are willing to sell, or know where to find them. Thanks so much!

Here's how Fates Warning came out in the Ytse-Top 20 survey:

    1. 20 Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade Of Gray 2. 03 Fates Warning - Parallels 3. 03 Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry 4. 03 Fates Warning - Still Life 5. 02 Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian 6. 02 Fates Warning - No Exit 7. 01 Fates Warning - Inside Out

How does this compare to the "official" Fates poll?

(Obviously we don't have enough data here to tell anything except that APSoG is by far the most popular amoung DT fans.)

Well, it looks like "Powerslave" is the most recommended recording from Iron Maiden. All Iron Maiden votes:

05 Iron Maiden - Powerslave 04 Iron Maiden - Live After Death 02 Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son 02 Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time 01 Iron Maiden - A Real Live One 01 Iron Maiden - Killers 01 Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind 01 Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast

Once again, not enough data to really separate these, but "Powerslave" seems to be the first choice.

Yah, that's nice. I see those all over. I bought my copy at Sam Goody without even having to special order it. It was sitting right next to Everclear or something with a big binocular grin waiting for me to pick it up. I've actually seen it in almost every guitar-tab-selling store I've gone to around here. I find that rather cool. Chesbro music in Idaho Falls had around 10 copies of each book last time I was there. :)

    >P.S. I'm also VERY interested in finding the "Lie", "Another Day", and >"Pull Me Under" singles ("Lie" especially - I LOVE "To Live Forever"). So,

Hmmm... Another Day and Pull Me Under didn't even have singles as far as I know. Just promo copies that got sent out to radio stations, etc. with the full track and a radio edit. I got my mitts on one of the PMU promos once when some chick brought it to work. I should have pocketed it then since she wouldn't give it to me. I wonder if she still has it... She doesn't even like Dream Theater. :P

As far as Lie, settle with a CD-R copy if you can, cuz the chances of finding a mint beauty of this series are about as slim as finding me in tights dancing the Nutcracker with a bunch of overweight heiffers in spandex. :P You can always hang around www.ebay.com and wait for a copy to pop up, but you better have $100 set aside to try and get it.

I've never heard The Quiet Room before, but I have to say that Tiles is a pretty damn good band. I have their only two CD's; their self titled debut (pretty good disc, not very heavy at all), and "Fence the Clear" which I find to be superior (a little bit heavier too). I don't know quite how to describe them...... I suppose they sound a bit like Rush perhaps, a little DT influence too, I think. They also have a 3rd disc on the way fairly soon, entitled "Presents of Mind" (and yes, it's presents, not presence - I'm not totally stupid).

Mike Harrington informed us: > "My girlfriend uses The Solo to Erotomania and her hand as sexual > stimulation" > She thanks you JP,

Ahhhh..... gotta love the 'Jam! ;-)

Al said: > Help me out here, I'm getting musically bored. I really like Fates Warning. > Fates does great at any style of music, but when Fates is in the "Mellow" > mode they really shine. (IMHO)

Al...... something happened to me last night. I was in a "mellow" mood, and I was kicking back with a friend having a Labatts Blue or six, and listening to some tunes. I should point out here that he isn't a prog-fan, he's more of a classic rock guy. OK, anyways, I figure since he likes Pink Floyd, he'd probably dig "A Pleasant Shade of Gray". So I pop in APSoG, from the "Still Life" live disc (amazing stuff, BTW). So we're sitting and listening to APSoG, when all of a sudden (to quote QR) "it hit me like a two ton........ heavy thing". I've had the APSoG disc for a few months now, and I've always thought it was "pretty good" but it never really struck me as "great". It's funny, it's like ALL OF A SUDDEN I just saw the fucking light. This really is ........ damnit, I can't even find the words. It definitely just "got me" though.

    > So where do I look now? I like the technical prowess and lyrics of DT. > Mix that with the song writing of Fates and I'm there! So who now?

Combine the technical prowess and lyrics of DT, with Fates' song writing? SURE, no problem whatsoever - that's no big feat! ;-)
