I'm thinking of picking up some cds, and I thought I'd look for some
input. Anybody have an opinion on any of the following, like which
ones would you get first (if at all)?

    Eldritch - Seeds of Rage
    Eternity X - The Edge
    Stratovarious - Visions
    Kamelot - Siege Perilous
Micheal Romeo - The Dark Chapter
Vanden Plas - The God Thing
    Payne's Gray - Kadeth Decoded
    Symphony X - Damnation Game

    Thanks for any input, BH

Does anybody have the free instructional tape that came with the new
Rock and Play unit from Ibanez? I have been looking to see if anyone
has them in stock, and I can't find it anywhere . . . well, I can find
it, but not with the Petrucci tape in it. Seems like they stopped
running that promotional offer a few months ago.

If anyone has it, I would appreciate any info on what it covers. Is it
different than the video? Does he stress the features of the tape unit?

Anyone willing to make me a copy? (Or for some trading?)

Also, I would be interested in anyone's comments on the unit. I'm
looking for something I can plug my guitar and keyboard into and
practice with, while learning licks from tapes.

Thanks for any info. Private response would probably make Skadz happy.

    Yo.

Did anybody notice how everybody is pretty much happier with the live
stuff than they have ever been with any other DT CD that I can
remember being released? It=B4s funny how people accept much better the
things that they know what to expect from. That=B4s what "commercial
music" means - give the people what they expect, and sell a ton
because everybody is going to like it. See, it even applies to prog
    fans.

Don=B4t get me wrong. I like live CDs too, and I=B4d take a live DT CD
over most other stuff any day of the week. I am a new stuff freak
though, I need something I haven=B4t heard before.

    On a second note... I know I will get Marill10n=B4s Radiat10n when I get
back to the US in a couple weeks, but now Itchy made me all curious,
what did you mean with this CD being different from what they=B4ve done
before? Different is a word that is like a mermaid=B4s chant to me, it
really drags me closer :) And please, no "Marillion sucks" post, those
are old by now. Like the "Ray Alder sucks" posts. Geez.

Is there any band out there already called Dust 2 Dust? That=B4s what
I=B4m thinking about calling my side project. No, it=B4s not
religious-based, I just like the name.

    Ciao,

    KillMary

wow....gotta say, it's been ages since i posted something substantial here.
usually, i'm relegated to skimming through jams, and my, the names seem to
    have changed a lot.

at this rate, i probably sound like a newbie.

but anyway, thought i'd make my own comments about the cd i finally got from
musicblvd.com (2 days late- so much for "guaranteed on the day of release").

generally, i think this does a great job of capturing what i think are the
best and not-so-brilliant segments of dt. while we're reamed with almost 160
minutes of an insane performance, i think the sound could be better in some
instances. i think this cd gives a glimpse of the future of dt, which is a
    good thing, i think.

first off, the way the songs have changed over time (sometimes drastically
chaged, even) is excellently captured here. it could be the simplest thing-
like a new patch that derek plays some of his leads with, or something pretty
severe like the sax (which i don't think sounds like an alto to me) on "tamp".
but in a genre of music whose heaviest criticism is that it tends to be dated
and grow stale quickly, these subtle changes are always welcome.

2nd, i want to say it. i know it's been said before. it seems to spur
controversy. but whatever. don't like it? fuck you too.

james' range is DEFINITELY on the decline. no doubt about it. i don't think
we'll ever hear him scream some of those absurdly high notes on pmu like he
used to back in 93, or even in 95. there were definitely some points on this
album where i was thinking, "he shouldn't have tried that.....did he have to?"
despite this sad and natural fact, i think it's going to be extremely
interesting to see what he does with his voice in the future. i'd love to see
how he responds to this sort of challenge. you never know- he might come up
with a new melody to on old song like "uagm" that we'll all wet our pussies
over. nevertheless, james was, is and always will be THE dt vocalist (i still
die laughing in ttt when he sings, "and no one will save you this TIME-UH").
so no, none of this means that he sucks, but it's kinda like time to mature.

3rd- why derek is my keyboard hero:
when i heard that kevin quit dt back in 94, i was heartbroken. who's going to
take the lyric-writing duties? most importantly, where the hell are you going
to get someone who can do what he was doing? when derek came into the mold, i
was one of those guys who thought, "fuck- this guy played for alice. he can't
cut this shit. he fucking sucks." i caught dt in the summer of 95, and right
towards the end of "ltl", he fucked up that piano break, and i lost my mind. i
was so mad, i might've yelled "derek you suck."

all that shit about how i hated derek, and how dt will never be the same
without kev.....gone. out the window. i'd gotten this vibe when i saw them for
myself last year, but now that i can REALLY hear what he's doing...i dare say
he's responsible for putting the fun back into playing prog-rock. from a guy
who wears fur coats, whose sexual orientation has been debated, lava lamps,
"eruption", "nicky lemons"? i don't think any of this would've worked with
someone else. he reminds me that not all prog-rock is stuffy, anal, and
    inpenetrable to the outside world.

and that piano thing before lines is....well...cute, to say the least. so was
the keys part at the beginning (yes, i differentiated between piano and keys).

    4) it was nice to hear the samples over the songs again. i can't think of the
last time i heard the "voices" samples live. and i don't think i've EVER heard
    the ttt samples live, ever.

    btw- voices rocks my world.

    5) speaking of voices, i found the vocals at the start of ttt interesting. was
that porntoy ( i STILL can't resist that play on words- by the way, mikey- if
you're even still on here, love the haircut. will you be my date for a night?
would mrs. portnoy mind?) and petrucci (mad props to kiara)? anyway, i got a
    laught out of that.

    6) i guess one thing (maybe it's a side-effect? i don't know how to
characterize it) about putting the fun back in prog is that shit gets weirder.
that whole ttt/freebird/moby dick thing was confusing to the point i wondered
what the point of it was. this covers mixture lacked the cohesiveness of the
shit they pulled off in peruvian skies. at least there, the references made
total sense. i knew at least that have a cigar and sandman belonged. but i
    don't get that whole bit.

    7) one thing i think i DO get is some of the cute references to OTHER songs
    nestled throughout the album.

    a) "only a matter of time" keyboard riff at about 3:00 of ttt
    b) a "xanadu" tribute at the beginning of "trial". you can't disagree. it's
    SOOOOOOO "xanadu".
    c) a very obscure reference to the intro to yes' "siberian khatru" at about
    5:22 of the guitar solo.

    8) i thought the drum sounds at the very beginning of lines were terrible.
it's like, here's the other instruments sounding like a normal live
instrument, and all of a sudden, you get "boonk!" in the background. it sounds
like the drums were coming from the backstage groupie room or something. i
felt like i was listening to a bootleg for a while there.

    9) drum solo. while i thought it was amazing, i was thinking to myself,
"hmm...last time a drum solo closed a side of a live album was tommy
aldridge's solo after 'steal away the night' on the randy rhoads tribute."
yawn. ho-hum. just think it could've been incorporated elsewhere, but this is
de minimis, so i won't bitch about this.

    10) this live album needed us to be reminded of what dt used to sound like-
angry young men. thankfully, this wish was granted when they threw in ciaw and
lie. that whole angry tone-thing going on, the 7-string action, those songs
are perfect examples of that phase in dt's music (and yes, i think it's
changed greatly from then- much more mature sounding, in some senses).

    11) some songs i wish HAD been on this cd would've been nm, or 6:00. if i was
controlling their fate, i would've commandeered them to get rid of jlmb to
make room (only b/c i've never liked the song). it would've also been nice to
have heard the full metropolis and ltl, but i can't always get my way.
otherwise, i'd be in my apartment 24/7 with beautiful women constantly
procuring sexual favors upon me, with the aid of tools like cigars and ben-wa
balls. *sigh* also, that would've meant another 10 dollars on the cd price.
    i'll live.

in all, it's a great live set. great dt album. great album, regardless. a
couple of hundred more plays, and this might make my list of top 5 of 1998
(currently there are tori amos, marilyn manson- if only for the controversy,
garbage, and i'm waiting to hear the new king's x, new live bowie, new live
    rush, and new nin).

so there, that's that. be checking y'all out.

Well, it will probably come to no one's suprise that HitNF by QR
didn't get any votes. But here's how the rest of the QR recordings
    faired:

    1. 21 Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
    2. 10 Queensryche - Empire
    3. 06 Queensryche - Promised Land
    3. 03 Queensryche - Rage For Order
    4. 01 Queensryche - The Warning

All excellent recordings of course, but O:M will always be their
masterpiece. (Although some may say that "Rage" was their most
progressive, in the literal sense of the word.)

    1. 13 Metallica - Master Of Puppets
    2. 10 Metallica - ...And Justice For All
    3. 07 Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction
    4. 06 Megadeth - Rust In Peace

    10. 01 Metallica - Garage Days Re-Revisited
    11. 01 Metallica - Live Shit, Binge And Purge (The 3cd Concert)
    12. 01 Metallica - Load

"Countdown to Extinction" in the #1 Megadeth position? Is "Reload"
    really better then "Load"?
    Whatever happened to "Peace Sells..."?

ARGH!!! Went to three different places.. and each orginally had 10 copies
and ALL SOLD OUT! I had to plaec it on order! Amazing! See.. DT does
NOTY have to cater to the masses.. they will gain popularity through
their own sincere artistic expressions.. the honest way.. the only way to
produce timeless classics. (which they already have many of).

It seems all the very best bands took several years to get going.. Pink
Floyd, Yes, Rush... It took a while for people to understand their works.
It also took time for people to hear their works.. but I believe most
people do not want to hear crappy thoughtless singles, but DO want to hear
Epic pieces and timeless imagery. Unfortunately the media wont promote
it.. so it takes time for people to hear it. But timeless classics are
not soon forgotten, so those bands last 30 years and their music lasts
forever (most *true* artwork is timeless). People will not remember your
average radio hit, but they will remember Dream Theater, Tori, etc etc.

    sorry..

Take care.. and keep believing in the true artistic expression!

Someone asked abou Oz dollars and subscribing to the DTIFC; well, I doubt
they'd accept our worthless, pissy little currency. :)
Nah, last year, I walked into a travel agent and simply got ten pounds in
cash; cost me somewhere around $20, I think...... plus your transaction
    fee, and stuff...........
If you don't wanna send cash, you can get a bank draft, which cost like
$10, but they're the same as a money order...... get them from your bank,
or from any place that does cash currency exchanges, presumably.......
Doing it in the foreign currency is certainly the way to go, however. :)
On another Australian note, my local store was going to import OIALT, but
then didn't (bastards!), coz they were told the local release is two or
three weeks away....... anyone have a date for this?? Also, they said they
had no info on the video, so does this mean we get shafted on the video
again? I don't wanna have to import a fucking video, coz my LIT has been on
order for ten months, and shows no sign of FUCKING ARRIVING.
On a more pleasant note, said store also had a copy of the Platypus CD last
week, so naturally I snapped that one up.... not bad, monsuiers, not
    bad...........
After never being a huge King's X fan (I was told I listened to the wrong
CDs), and not having heard Rod Morgenstein before, this CD was pretty
good....... early favourite was "I'm With You" just for those fucking
chorus harmonies....... now I think I've listened to that track too
    much..... :)
Some of the instrumentals seem a little trite, but that's okay...... did I
mention the slide solo in "Willie Brown" is one mean motherfucker? Derek is
cool on this one, although the lack of noticeable bass on the CD is a bit
of a worry..... only on one track did I suddenly go "oh yeah, John Myung
    plays on this!"........ heh.
On anon-DT related note, I saw Japanese guitarist K. K. Null play live on
    Friday night...... cool as. :)
If anyone gets the chance to see him, expect a total sonic onslaught.....
the fucking SOUND, man...... his table of effects pedals and stuff amused
me no end....... his entire 45 minute piece consisted of him whacking the
back of the neck on his Stratocaster, to get the strings ringing, and then
the overtones and stuff produced by TWO amps being run EXTREMELY fucking
loud were then constantly manipulated with this truckload of effects......
Two highlights, the first being when he was getting a low-end drone
happening, and then raised the guitar to his teeth, and got these fucking
wicked schreeching tones over the top by dragging his teeth along the top
string...... sound INCREDIBLE. Other favourite moment was when he walked
over to his amp and adjusted the mid-range by a notch. HAHAHAHAHA.
After inundating my girlfriend with Merzbow and Null CDs in anticipation of
the big event, and her subsequently not looking forward to it at all, she
rather enjoyed the gig, so that was nice. While I'm on the subject of her,
I'd like brag abou her musical selections, which include Yes, Dream
Theater, Megadeth (I hate the 'deth, but...................), Mr. Bungle,
Frank Zappa, Primus, Napalm Death, as well as much of what I constantly
inundate her with! :) I guess this is one girlfriend I can't complain
    about!!!!!!!!! :)
One more thing, all you people need to buy "Bound By Fire" by Zimmer's
Hole. If you've herad it, you should know why. It's the most sublime cross
between first album Mr. Bungle and Strapping YOung Lad I have heard to
date, and also proves that tiolet humour will never NOT be funny.
    The end.

    Seeya!
