I wonder if they will ever make a bassist's perspective mix, DS on the
right, everyone else on the left, and of course bass dead center :)

At the risk of sounding like an icredible newbie (though I am pretty new
to this list, I've lived through a couple of arguments so far), I just
barely heard my first bit of Symphony X - "Sea of Lies", to be exact - and
I have only one thing to say:

WHERE CAN I FIND SOME MORE?!

Are there any sites out there where I can find MP3s of their stuff? If
there are, by all means, contact me about it.

Ok, so I've heard some people glorifying this album. I had "Carved in

Koba, All I can say is YES, YES, YES! This is exactly what I was
starting to think a year ago when I saw them in L.A. ... Derek has really
brought a spirit of fun into the OFB's live performances. I mean, I
can do without Mike spitting water on everyone, but what the hell...
the mood has become so much lighter since Derek found his groove in
the band. In my mind, he is not Kevin's replacement - he is DEREK.
Let him be "weird" all he wants... fact is, he kicks ass on the keys
and brings new flavor to DT at an opportune time.

    That all I gotta say...

Well, at my local Tower records, DT gets a full column on the shelf -
from the bottom to the top, through maybe 5 or 6 "steps"(for lack of a
better word). Also, I can often find them in on of the coveted display
positions at the very top of the shelf, where cds are lined up side by
side. At Goody, Musicland, and everywhere else, they don't get nearly as
much prominence. Do these stores have any say in who they can promote,
or is there some kind of contract specification handed down by the
record companies? I am the epitome of ignorance here. All I know is
that, at least on the surface, Tower Records is a good thing.

I hate the OiaL case. maybe mine is a defect, but it opens very stiffly
    - it won't just swing open. Plus, there's no good spot to grab the
middle piece so as to turn it over and get the other cd. On the typical
slimline double cd case, your hinge is on the right, and you can sort of
flip the thing over. Here, you must push it open with resistance. Plus,
the rear liner is exposed! that sucks. it flaps in the wind if you hold
    the thing upside down.

And btw, as a graphic designer, I have to say I don't much care for the
liner notes design, either. the storm thorgesen illustration is cool,
but the collage, which is most of the design, sucks. It's one of the
worst collages I've ever seen, and I have to believe it was done with
extreme carelessness and I'm very disappointed. You can't even see most
of the photos, which makes them useless noise. And that wouldn't be so
bad, if the sacrifice of information went to making the thing look good,
but it doesn't look good at all. it looks like the spread of my
    junior-high yearbook.

Of course, my bitching stops there, because the cd is phenominal. All
the little things I hoped would be there are. Like the cool way James
says "I'll try, I swear I'll....tryyyyyyyyyeeeeeeyayayayayya!" or the
pumped up guitar entrance in ACOS, and yes, I was pleasantly surprised
to hear the samples in voices and TTT.

Also, trial of tears was great! killer. Anyone else notice the Close
Encounters of the Third Kind riff John had going on in the intro?

Hey Jammmers, Being bothered with school and work and other shit the past week, I finaly got the chance to go out and buy OiaL. My first song i heard off it was TAMP on Fingers Metal Shop on LI's WBAB. Let me tell you, it was quite a change from what he usually plays! So i go out and buy it listen to it, and think DAMN! thats good. It bothers me that you can hear JM and when you do, his tone is horrible. Not only that, he chickens out in ACOS IV, but that WAS funny. MP solo was amazing and the intro to Scarred was awsome. Everyone got solos but JM!!! JP had his share as always! :) Dereks was cool and i didnt realize how complex LitS really is until being able to hear the keys with no distraction. Overall the sound is excellent. JLB sounds as he always does live, almost sounds like he uses a pre-recorded track :) I havent finished the 2nd disc yet, but up to now, i am definatly not dissappointed. Round of applause for you guys. How about next tour dragging the Symphony X boys with you. How sweet it is! Thats the album from the eyes of a bassist of course, as if you didnt notice. Back to lurk.

I'm still fairly new to the jam, so forgive me if this questions was already addressed. I was listening to OIALT to track #11, "Ytsejam". At about 3:12 in the track, Mike Portnoy shouts something out during the small break in the music. He did the same thing when I saw the show live in Phoenix. I was trying to read his lips and still could not figure out what he is saying. Does anybody know? If you do, please share it with the rest of us. My burning curiosity thanks you in advance.

I just wanted to comment on Jame's range. Alright, I do admit that he's lost some of his range, but I also wanted to say that I think James has regained some of his range recently. I think James hit more of the high notes on OIAL than on any other boot I've heard since the I&W days. I don't think he's capable anymore of screaming his ass off like he did at the end of the original ACOS, or at the end of TLF in the Live in Tokyo video without sounding like Phil Anselmo of Pantera for the rest of the concert (alright, I'm exaggerating), but he can still hit many of the high notes on most of the songs. It really baffles me how he has gone from sounding great (I&W days) to sounding average (Awake days) to sounding great again (FII days, NOW). And it's also baffling how he was capable of sounding great throughout the whole OIAL concert, which was longer than the usual DT concert, when, for example in the Home for the Holidays shows, his voice would fuck up around the end of the concert. He also sounded a lot cleaner on a lot of high notes on OIAL than on other concerts I've heard from post-I&W concerts. So, I think James still has most of his range, but there had to be something wrong with his singing that he has corrected recently and has allowed him to exploit his vocal chords some more.

    >b) a "xanadu" tribute at the beginning of "trial". you can't disagree. it's >SOOOOOOO "xanadu".

It sounds a bit like Xanadu, but I think it's more a tribute to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Trees (Portnoy's wood blocks) than to Xanadu.

After effectively knocking out the asshole EMI staff working the concert with his camel spits from hell *HWOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAACH* and building up the speed, Mike swung that microphone over Mount Tama with his speedy paws and shouted, FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS!!! And the headbanging commenced. I don't have OiaLT yet(yeah, just TRY to tar and feather me, buddy), but that's what happened in Tempe on the 20th of May, 1998....Ah, why I can just remember it like it was yesterday....

John Petrucci jumping off the shuttle at Club Rio, looking at us jumping around sayin' "YO JOHN!" 3 hours before the show...and him flipping us off and sayin', "Your mothers listen to Marilyn Manson!" before fleeing into the safety of his rackmount village....James turning Ed Voras into door jam as he flew out of the club mumbling something about "Goddamn prog bands...singers deserve solos too..."....John Myung giving that cockeyed look that dogs do when you fart weird after I bowed down and kissed his boot wearing toes, and the doing the Irish jig with Derek in the studio...bwahahaha....ahh the memories....

Wait a sec...i was never in the same studio as Dream Theater....
