I don't think Labrie has lost anything. He's singing more restrained, but I think it sounds better. And when he has to hit a high note, he does. It's a concert for god sake, if you want perfection listen to the studio CDs. He also changes some notes for the same reason JP does not play his solos exactly the same way on the album-- it gets boring to play the exact same thing for years.
Of course Labrie is not perfect. Although you have to remember the show recorded for the live album was DT's headlining show of the FII tour. The tour began last October and the show was recorded in June. That's nine months of touring to strain his voice. Also I believe it was said Labrie was sick and had throat problems throughout the Awake tour. Cut him some slack, when Labrie strains his vocal chords, it's not like he can get an immediate replacement like JP does when he breaks a string.

And now, some DTC:
I keep on wondering why the hell songs as "To Live Forever" and all the other "B-sides" or non-album demos aren't released widely. A lot of them are really great tunes! I really like TLF, but the only version I have is the LIT video (JP's extensive soloing is among the best live solos I've heard), and usually I don't bother winding the video to the song whenever I want to hear it. And I have big trouble and little money, if I feel like getting the demo CD's... Why can't they re-record all the old demo songs and release them as a "B-sides" studio album (like U-fucking-2) or something? Or at least include some of them on the coming "Metropolis II" CD (will there ever be one?). I'm sure it would sell anyway.
And another thought: Is "The Mirror" and "Lie" connected in any other way then just technically? Musically or lyrically, if the share a theme (happens regularly on "Awake") or lyrical contents? Or are they played as "one song on two tracks" _just because_ they're wanted to do a cool thing?
And here's an amusing little anecdote from my life... (very fucking interesting, I know) One of the guitarists in my band, Tommy, has another band of his own, and the drummer there, Zeb, is nowadays (thanks to me) a big Portnoy/DT fan. And thanks to that, Tommy sez, Zeb refuses play straight 4/4 anymore. Good or bad? What the hell, Zeb's a moron, but at least he's a DT fan! :-D I wonder if I can get my "Awake" CD back from him, though... <:-/

I'm a die hard fan of IQ's and in the last year I've been able to buy their albums (before it was too difficult for me to find them), but now I'm extremely happy to help you with this. Subterranea is the 'latest' recording (I say 'latest' because they have re-released their first recording which is a tape, really, and they have re-recorded those songs and released them as a double CD,-one is the originals, one is the new recordings- for us, mortals who weren't lucky enough to buy it initially in the early 80's). It is by far the best produced and the best performed of their albums. Great buy. That means that whatever you buy from them from now on, won't be as good (but of course, it depends on what you're looking for, for at least, that is the conclusion that you get when you take a look at their most recent poll). I would recommend to you 'The Wake', which is one of their earliest albums. The lyrics deal with the topic of death, but in a poetic manner, and the songwriting is more coherent, since it's somewhat a concept album. Another good CD is 'Jai Polette D'Arnu' which is kind of a -rarities- CD, with 2 of their earliest songs re-recorded and some live recordings. On this one, they had another singer than the one featured on Subte... His name is Paul Menel, and I prefer him over Pete Nicholls, but I'm one of the few that does. They sing similarly though. Pete Nicholls strived on his theatrical aproach to the stage, a la Peter Gabriel. Paul Menel was more technical, was more in tune. But Pete Nicholls has impressed me with his later work with IQ since he rejoined (yes, he was the singer before and after Paul Menel). Another album to check would be 'Ever' which came before Subte, and was the first after the reunion. In this one, the keyboards sound better than ever, and there's even a keyboard solo worthy of Tony Banks!! If you liked Subte, buy this one blindfolded! With Paul Menel, they recorded 2 albums: 'Nomzamo' and 'Are you Sitting Comfortably?', the latter being produced by Terry Brown, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone yet. It's a bit commercial, although you can find excellent songs in it. With Paul, they recorded another album, with very poor quality, and it's like a boot. I've got it, and it contains old IQ songs recorded somewhere in a sound check or something. You wouldn't find it if you wanted to buy it, anyway. It's out of print. I hope this helps!

I just want to know why ppl find Yes, Kansas and Spock's Beard similar. This has me quite puzzled indeed, because it's not the first time I've read this and I disagree, because I think that Spock's Beard has more in common with Focus than Yes and/or Kansas. To me, SB has a different texture (maybe the addition of cello helps -and that would be a link to Kansas' violin, but that's all) but the songwriting, the arrangements and the overall sound is too different. I would say that Yes's counterpart today would be Glass Hammer, which is very keyboard-oriented, with incredible vocal arrangements. GH's 'Perelandra' has stunning layers of keyboards, like church organ and searing solos. More like Yes. On the other hand, Echolyn is more like Kansas: it's rough but at the same time, it's very symphonic.

So, it seems that Metallica has released another album called "Garage, Inc." and I've not seen any review yet. At least some of this 2CD set is new material and I'd like to see some comments about these covers (I already have the others, including the special "Kill'em All" CD printing with the bonuses).
Here in Sao Paulo, there's a song getting airplay and if I'm not mistaken, it's called "Turn the Page" (don't know many details about it).
Any comments are welcome.
