    Hi Mike! :)

As far as the 'sword and sorcery of Sym. X' is concerned, I think I'm not
affected by that level of cheese because I pay little attention to lyrics.
My focus is on harmony and melody: the instrumental aspects.

    1. Songwriting.

When I listen to Symphony X, I hear outstanding songwriting with some of
the coolest guitar riffs I have ever heard. When I listen to SG I hear
    weak and uninteresting songwriting.

    2. Vocal performance.

Where's what really gets me about SG. I can't see how anyone can possibly
listen to the singing on both CiS and Tyranny and not laugh at just
how silly it is. Unfortunately "silly" is the only word I can come up with
to describe the style of singing. This is where the overwhelming
    perception of cheese is sourced.

Another aspect of Tyranny which makes me not want to listen is the
production. What's with the paper-thin guitars that slice my eardrums
apart? If I'm going to let my ears bleed, it's going to be from balls &
chunk (Symphony X) and not razorblade cuts (SG).

On a relative scale, however, I'd rather listen to Tyranny than, say,
Sunblaze "Illuminating Heights". On the flip side, I'd actually prefer to
hear Steve Hogarth whine on a Marillion album than hear any SG.

That's my nipple. Well, one of them at least.

Not to nit-pick or anything, but "Visions" is a studio album and "Visions
of Europe" is a double live album. I think Brian Hansen asked about the
    former. No biggie. :)

Um, when did KISS ever put out intelligent music? KISS was never about
10 minute guitar fests. Their songs are fun, party type songs. That's
it. Obviously if you only like music like DT, you wont like KISS. If you
have an open mind and like various genres of music then you might like
KISS. I have the new disc and I have listened to it more than 5 times.
It still rocks. Their best cd since Lick It Up.

    Ok Jammanoids....

After (finally!!) watching 5YiaLT, I decided that it's about time I took some action.... I am really motivated right now.... Yada yada yada...!!!

So I was thinkin'... I know there must be some basists, guitarists, keyboard players and singers reading this..... Wouldn't it be cool if for instance one of you guitarists out there recorded a (self made) guitar track and send it to me so I can add a drumtrack. I then will send it to an Ytse-bassist (the futher, the better...), which will add his track. He then will send it to a singer and so forth... Not particulairly in that order tho..... I thought it would be a great idea... Maybe it works out and the "Ytse-band" could come together some time...... I hope there are some people (with access to "good" quality recording possibilities among you.... When it's finished, we can put it as an MP3 on the net......

I know it's possible... (Grip Inc. have worked like this on their songs until the recordings of their first album....) Of course the sound quality won't be optimal.... But it would be just fun...

Also I am still desperately looking for a band at the moment... Anyone in the Netherlands looking for a very motivated an pretty experienced drummer...? No beginners..... Style.....: dah....!

I do have Siege Perilous though, and either they've gone through some major changes with the addition of Khan, or everyone is full of shit about how they used to suck. The bottom line: if you've never heard Kamelot before, get Siege Perilous... if you hated Kamelot before, get Siege Perilous. Did I mention you should get Siege Perilous?

    >Ouch, Rick. THE FOLLOWING IS NOT INTENDED AS FLAMEBAIT: How can you > listen to the sword and sorcery of Sym. X and then turn right around and slam SG?

For Kyle, bottom line is you had better listen to it first...

For Mike, I tend to agree with Rick, but I'll actually explain a little. You seem to be relating the lyrics of Sym-X with SG. Granted, they're both a bit "sword and sorcery", but even within that narrow scope, some people like one and not the other.

As far as vocals go, the differences are staggering here. Many people (including myself) feel that Russell Allen (Sym-X) is one of the best singers to come around since Geoff Tate.

As for Tyranny, I've only given it a couple of listens. That first instrumental song blew me away. The production was great! No cheese there. But when the vocals came in, it was obvious. With the production now first rate, it's obvious that the singer (Mike Baker) has a block of velveeta stuck in his throat. There's 2 kinds of people, those who can take his vocals, and those who can't. It's just a matter of taste.

To me, he's too over the top, too dramatic. All the cheese that Geoff Tate could have mustered in "The Warning" era, but instead of coming off as incredible (like Geoff), it comes off as terrible.

I could imagine that I would love Tyranny if someone else, like John Arch (ex-Fates), were singing. (For some reason that seems like a great combination to me). But with the current vocals, it's just not my cup of tea.

    Hope that helps explain...

    Hey all.

For some reason I felt the urge to post. Those people at Tower Records, especially Tower Online, are rude as hell. When they didnt send me the extra CD single that should have came with one of my orders, I emailed them, and getting no response, I called them. And the prick who answered the phone didnt seem to realize that I was the one paying money for their merchandise, adn his company had screwed up. I havent gotten OIAL yet, just cus I am a poor college girl, and I have a lot more albums I need to buy before I treat myself to a live CD. I don't know if LaBrie is losing his range, but maybe it'd be a nice change. I for one tend to get sick of all the progressive bands having high tenors and nothing else. Tyranny-- I hate it. I want my money back. I love it until the singing starts. To me, the lyrics sound like a 3rd grader trying to make a poem that rhymes and sacraficing substance for that. And damn all these online reconrd stores for running our of Vanden Plas!! If you dont have it you need to get it, and send me a copy while you're at it. adn to Joe, if you think its hard to find a progmetal girlfriend, try finding a guy like that that also likes goth industrial and synth pop, and who can keep up with the mind of an astrophysics major!

Somebody inquired into the merits of the Quiet Room recently. I purchased their album Introspect (at Tower, stupidly filed under I [WTF!!!]) and it has its positive points. It didn't make me jump up and down excitedly, baying at the moon, but I enjoyed it: the guitarist and vocalist were very talented, nothing overly complicated. I'd give it a 7/10.

Another jammer casually asked about Marillion. I'm surprised Itchy didn't jump all over that question. Marillion and DT don't share a lot in common except being slapped together under the "prog" genre. Needless to say, Marillion is not a metal band, as you undoubtedly discerned from the snippet of AoS that you heard. Depending on which track you heard, nobody could tell you that it was representative of their other albums: they tend to keep a similar overall sound, in terms of melodic concepts and layered textures. On the Marillion mailing list [which sometimes seems as mean-spirited as some of you guys ;)] they are starting to complain about what songs are being included in the live show. Sound familiar? Anyway, like DT, they are difficult to pigeonhole.

That's been discussed several times - a Ytsejam DT Tribute where we all record our tracks at home and send em somewhere. It never got anywhere. I was gonna do guitar for Ytsejam, and my friend Mario (he of the former handle RipZero, whom i doth believe is off the list now) was gonna do guitar for UAGM. Sigh, if only :) Moral of the story: in the real world it's possible, but we're not part of the real world. This is not reality. But then, don't you know that reality is immaterial? Moo.
