Dragging through work today after staying out till 3 AM last night to see King's X and Galactic Cowboys here in Atlanta. It was worth every minute, though -- a very enjoyable evening.
Galactic Cowboys: Pretty good band from what I could see. The guitarist was from the Angus Young Histrionics school of stage presence -- head bobbing, bent-knee shuffle, the works. The only thing he was missing was the duck walk and spastic flail. Good guitarist, though. The vocalist and bassist were all over the place, jumping around like drops of water on a hot pan. You could tell they were really enjoying themselves. The drummer looked like he was sick (played all bundled up and was shivering in between songs) but still sounded dead on. I definitely gotta go get some of their stuff.
King's X: A hell of a great band to see live. Being right in front of Doug Pinnick, I got to see him manage intricate basslines and harmony vocals with equal facility. Doug is a tall skinny guy with very long, powerful fingers -- he was made to play bass it seems. He is also an insufferable wiseacre onstage, spending much of the evening throwing quizzical looks and smirks at the audience. On one song in particular he didn't even do the vocals for a verser or two, just letting the audience do it for him, and standing there with this attitude of readiness should we screw it up. :) A cold didn't slow him down one whit, though he went through half a box of tissues.
Ty Tabor is very subdued onstage, very unlike Doug. He spent most of his time in one position, but his fingers did the talking for him. His unique tone was present in force, a grinding crunch for rhythm playing and a bluesy snarl for lead licks. His vocals sounded good but because most of the speakers were over my head (I was in the very front) I couldn't hear him too well. A DAT recording I heard after the show (hi, Soundchaser) proved he sounded just fine to the rest of the audience.
Jerry Gaskill spent half his time looking like he was asleep, eyes shut tightly. But his antics behind the drumkit gave it the lie. He laid down a very powerful drum sound behind Doug's bone-shaking bass, and kept the time and rhythm shifts moving in impeccable tightness. His vocals sounded good too, but like Ty's they were mostly directed through the speakers over my head, so I missed the full impact. Jerry too is an insufferable wiseacre, doing flexes and posing for the audience after the first set and after the encore.
The setlist: Pretty mixed from what I could tell; I only own a single King's X album and they played one song from it (the last song of the encore, "We Were Born to be Loved" -- which KICKS live). Lotsa stuff from the new release, evidently. All of it was good. Two that got a massive response from the crowd were "Black Flag" and "Over My Head".
All three guys hung out for an hour after the show, in the freezing cold, to sign stuff and chat with us rabid fans. (Well, Jerry and Doug did; Ty, being the shy one, stayed inside till the last possible minute, then hung out to accomodate the people who'd stayed to talk to him). They are all friendly as hell and really easy to talk to; each of them made a special point of thanking the fans for coming out and saying "Without you guys, we wouldn't be doing this".
Great music, friendly guys. King's X. Go see them on this tour.

Yes, it is a problem (tho' I've traded for at least 40 shows in the past year - almost all on cassette). People want the convenience of CD, and some probably want the artwork on the cover (tho', as you said, some fans just care about the music). The only thing I can say to that is if you stay only with CD you miss a TON of material. All the rare shows I have are on cassette. There are no rare shows that are sold on CD - everyone has the CD boots. We're talking generic CD boots that everyone and their mother has like Mind Control, TDOE, Majestic Harmonies, FYS, SoC etc etc etc... None of these are anything of note whatsoever. For example, will you ever see the show Derrek was first announced as officially DT on a CD boot? Nope, the source tapes (at least the ones I've heard) don't have great quality so no one wants to sell them on CD. It's fine to stay exclusively with CD if all you want is a cursory glance at a tour/band, but, at least in general, you have to go with some sort of tape (DAT/cassette) to get a really complete look. Fans of bands that allow/encourage taping have already known this for years. It seems to be only bands that you have to "stealth tape" who's fans don't understand this concept.

The only person in DT that has a positive outlook on boots is Portnoy, from what I understand. (And yes, he does have all of them because he tapes every show they do on DAT - _DAT_, not CD) James and Petrucci have been repeatedly quoted as being highly against boots. I'm not even talking about screwing the band out of money, tho'. It's more screwing fellow fans out of money. When you charge $40 for 2 CDs of someone else's work, I feel you're taking people for a ride. I don't want to hear the "Oh, it took forever to remaster this and do the artwork, etc <whine> etc <whine> etc..." I've remastered CDs before and once you figure out what you're doing it's not difficult, just a bit tedious (and you really get sick of listening to whatever you're editing). :) As for the artwork, I honestly think most dedicated fans really don't care. Maybe I'm just a traditional music lover who actually cares solely about the music as opposed to totally superficial things like cover art, but you've gotta know you're paying more for that cover/CD artwork. We could talk about BootScalper's overcharging all day, but that's been covered more than enough with Prism.
Man, I don't know what it is about this - it just gets my riled up. :) I'm getting a burner in a few weeks and I'm thinking seriously of doing a tree (on CD, DAT, or cassette) of the Rotterdam show. It would be either $6 to cover the cost of media and shipping, or you could send your own blanks and just include $3 for Priority Mail postage. Of course, it wouldn't include the ever-important artwork, but if you're actually one of the (apparently) rare people that are into bootlegs just for the music, this would be for you. If there would be interest in this email me (not the 'Jam, please) since I'd have to get up a few other people to help with the organization, taping, etc. Take care all, and keep tradin'!

the band is split on the subject. Mike P doesn't mind boots and has quite a few. i think james doesn't like em, and i dunno about the rest of em. basically, they're not going after bootleggers, but it doesn't mean they're all in favor or all opposed. moo.

Yes, you are. At least, with me.
Let me get the topic a bit far from the subject of CDs/tapes trade and focus a bit on the trading action: other incredible people with whom I have traded are (I'm excluding Brazilian friends from the list): Brian Henderson and Matt Teiper. I'm sure that I'm forgetting a lot of other people and I'm so sorry for that (and with Matt, I've traded some huge batches -- like we are trading right now -- and we trade quite frequently).
And the nice thing about these traders was that they don't just want to get their part of the trade and then pretend they don't even know me anymore. They're friends and good people with whom I've exchanged *long* messages (messages about many subjects, and of course, with many detailed reviews of our preferred albums). Friends in the truest sense of the word. A word whose meaning many people seem to have forgotten about.
Cool people that I've met through this mailing list. That's the purpose of Internet, IMO -- to bring people closer to each other. Not to make them appear like a "cold" sequence of bytes transferred by some devices.
So, as a recommendation, do trade tapes, people. As a side result of getting fresh music, you're also making some friends.
