browsing the site, cool and all, one question - i see 4 DT cds listen on the
discography that i don't recognize as official releases (another uncovered,
small club adventure, live bonus tracks, and touring into infinity and
beyond) - are those boots? if so, why'd he include boots on an official
discography? and why only those 4? :) just curious. moo.

    Hey all,
I wasn't going to even mention this disc, but hey, since everyone else
is... Okay, so ONE other guy did..
I don't like it. It's long, not cohesive, and meandering and has a sub-par
setlist. First off: why is Stick It Out even on here? Can I get a show of
hands of who thinks this is superior to either Double Agent or Cold Fire?
Nobody? Yeah, I thought so... Also, I understand the cycle of live albums
and how the album right after the last live album is always
underrepresented, but Presto deserved more songs on here than this.
And like we needed another live version of CttH, or Tom Sawyer, TSoR, etc.
One live version is usually enough, but I guess not for these guys. And why
did they cut out all the "background" music? By this I mean Thus Spake
Zarathustra and Flight of the Bumblee, and the other things like that. Plus
the crowd noise is soooo contrived. Anyone who was at these shows knows
that for the opening of 2112, the crowds went absoltuely ballistic, but you
    don't hear that at all.
Good points? Yeah there are some things I liked. I like hearing Alex's use
of the piezo pickup on his PRS. Makes me envious... But it does sound awful
on some songs. I think the mix is great, this actually sounds like a Rush
show, unlike past live discs. Bravado rules, of course. And the bonus disc
is truly a bonus in so many senses. Cygnus X-1 is nearly worth the price of
purchase alone, and AFTK sounds superb live. Since AFTK is my favorite Rush
album, this is an ideal tour to have this disc from.
Overall, the main two discs aren't worth the purchase price IMHO (and yes
I am a Rush fan) and boots from the RtB and CP tours have better setlists.
But if you've got $20 to spare, are a Rush fan, and are ambling through the
record store, you'll likely end up with it regardless of this review.

I just got my Dream Theater and Fates Warning live CDs in the mail today.
I have to admit that I'm once again disappointed.

When I saw them live in concert, I really don't remember James LaBrie
singing like shit. But I really think his singing sucks on this CD from
what I've heard so far. The instrumental parts are awesome, but I really
miss James' clear excellent studio singing from Images and Words and A
Change of Seasons. I guess he's just a studio singer. The thing is: I
really don't remember his singing being bad when I saw them live. What
pisses me off the most is how he ruined some of my favorite songs such as
Scarred and Take the Time. James completely sucks in these songs.

Also, the keyboards REALLY get the forefront of the CD which is allright
because it sounds like Derek really kicks butt. And once again, the
recording quality just sounds kind of muddy to me. Most of the awesome
cymbals that I like to hear such as the china and splash are not clear like
they used to be on Images and Words and Awake. I really don't like Kevin
Shirley as a producer. I haven't liked any of the sound production on any
of the CDs he produced. Liquid tension experiment was the most acceptable I
think. Awake had the by far the best sound production of any of the DT
    releases, IMO.

I don't know why LaBrie pronounces words so poorly on the live performances.
He sounds like an idiot when he sings "buhleeve" instead of believe, among
many other lyrics in take the time and scarred. Oh and another one: Spake
instead of speak, bake instead of back on Voices. Portnoy, Petrucci, and
Sherinian really make the recording from what I've heard already.

I think James should not have sung so well on Images and Words in the
Studio, cause now I'm going to be disappointed when he sings and it doesn't
live up to the superior singing on that best CD EVER. I don't think any
band could ever replicate Images and Words, not even Dream Theater,
    unfortunately.

On a more "pleasant shade of gray" note:

I must admit that the Fates Warning Live release "Still Life" REALLY kicks
ass!!! They do such an incredible job on an already AMAZING CD of A
pleasant Shade of Gray. This band has really excelled in quality both
musically and recording-wise. They get better with time -- no doubt!! Terry
Brown HAS to be one of the best producers EVER. He produced the BEST RUSH
CDs (70s to early 80s) and now the BEST Fates Warning CDs (Parallels, A
Pleasant Shade of Gray, and Still Life). Dream Theater should have Terry
    Brown as the producer!

Oh well, that's what prog underground on the internet is for. I can find
out about great new bands such as Shadow Gallery, Enchant, Lemur Voice,
    Savatage, etc.
Magna Carta is the best label around except that they won't resign Lemur
Voice. This band has the best vocals and instrumentals next to Images and
Words, IMO. I think I'd have to admit that IAW followed by Lemur Voice's
"Insights" are the best releases around in the history of prog.

Ah well, I'm off my soap box now.

But seriously Ryan, I have no problem with what you do. KTS does it, Why
Not? does it, you do it. What I have a problem with is how you, much like
the reviled Mike, turn around and call it a service to fans. You talk about

material that everyone can now have access to. Funny, I could swear that
Swifty sent me some of the same stuff you're selling and all I had to do

This is the kind of post that points out strongly (at least for me) the
importance of separating an individual and his business when talking about
the two. Though we obviously strongly disagree on the business topic,
we've both kept out the personal insults, flames, etc. Thanks for the
    maturity, Ryan...

    To clarify so I don't sound like a hypocrite: :) I bought Scarred's first
release, "Seven Wonders." It was an MP3 CD of the seven (to that point)
Bahr boots. Selling MP3 CDs of this type, I feel, is much more acceptable
than selling standard audio CDs. I think it cost me $20 and contained 7
Bootlegs. Now that is actually a deal for the music lover. Morons these
days are trying to sell single disc Bahr boots for $50 and more. If you
fall for buying at that price you deserve to lose that money. And Seven
Wonders (with it's sucessor) was obviously for a specific audience - the
online Dream Theater fans and this mailing list. You're not going to be
able to sell this kind of CD to the general public. This was actually the
closest thing to a "service" to the fans I've ever seen come out of a
for-profit boot seller. This is why I offered Ryan some webspace and
    purchased his mp3 CD...

I've gotten an unbelievable response to my suggestion that we get a tape
tree going for the Rotterdam show. The show will be from DAT and the patch
to CD will be straight digital (good to have pro-audio friends), so we're
looking at good sound here. Also to clarify - this is NOT a competition
with Scarred. If artwork is important to you (and $40 is not), then go for
his release. I won't do the tree until Jan/Feb anyways. Take care all!

See my post a few jams ago. It depends on how in depth you want to get
with a band. If you stick to CD, you're going to miss out on unique
moments - and that's a fact. Again, if you just want an overview of the
band live, CD only is fine. If you want a closeup you have to dig around.
Maybe you have to give up some sound quality, or *GASP!!!!!*, give up
random track access. THE HORROR! Lazy bastards... :)

Also, "tape trees don't work well anymore" is totally uninformed. Go look
at any band who encourages taping at their shows. Look at Widespread
Panic, for example. With this band I've been involved in at least 5 trees
with more than 100 people each in the past 6 months. If that's not working
well, I don't know what is. This kind of stuff happens with all kinds of
bands - moe., phish, dead, widespread, dave matthews, etc etc etc...

    >< Galactic Cowboys: Pretty good band from what I could see. The guitarist
    was
from the Angus Young Histrionics school of stage presence -- head bobbing,
bent-knee shuffle, the works. The only thing he was missing was the duck walk
and spastic flail. Good guitarist, though. The vocalist and bassist were all
over the place, jumping around like drops of water on a hot pan. You could
tell they were really enjoying themselves. The drummer looked like he was sick
(played all bundled up and was shivering in between songs) but still sounded
dead on. I definitely gotta go get some of their stuff. ><

Get Space In Your face and/or Self-Titled. Both excellent, excellent albums.
Also, I think their last drummer left and they juist hired this guy to tour
with them, that could explain the nervousness

    No I'm not Jon Parmet.

There is one person on the list who knows my real identity, but then why
    should anyone care?

Hmmm... perhaps it wasn't my day. OF COURSE I know that "Macht" means "power" - it's even very much like the Swedish word for it - "makt" (Swedish and German are related languages).
Good thing I didn't bother asking my teacher... guess it would have lowered my grade. <:-)

German is not weird, it's just troublesome with all its rules and exceptions, but it's overall very logical. Although utterly demanding. I see English as rather simple in a way, but maybe that's just because I learned my first English words when I was four.

You want a weird language? Learn Swedish.
E.g. we have two words for "one". Well, German has a whole bunch of them, but in Swedish there are no rules whatsoever when you're using which one.

Aw, fuck languages, I have to keep in mind this a DT list... <:-)

"Some big 'O' pillaged and" blah blah BLAH BLAH BLAAAHH!

I tell you what, Maxie man, you're cool, but you don't have to prove it all the fuckin' time. It will just be embarrassing when you run out of ideas... so why don't you make it a habit: "John Doe wrote:"...

You don't know me... I once said "Ich hat eine Computern"... :-)
(FYI: It's supposed to be "Ich habe ein Computer" - "I have a computer".)
