    Hi all

just an advanced warning to those of you who read my album reviews. My last
visit to my CD dealer (http://www.ulismusic.de) left him much richer, me much
poorer and my CD collection 5 albums larger. You can expect reviews of the
following in the next couple of days:

THE GATHERING - How To Measure A Planet?
THE DESERT SESSIONS - Volumes III/IV
STIGMATA IV - The Court Of Eternity
    STRAOVARIUS - Destiny
SYMPHONY X - Twilight IN Olympus

Up front, The Gathering's new album (2 CDs) looks like it's going to be my
favourite new album for 98. I was fairly sure that this honour would go to
Anathema's brilliant "Alternative 4". Talking of favourite new releases, has
anybody volunteered to run the 98 poll?

    stay safe and happy listening
    Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

Hello everyone, it's BABS. I strongly encourage doing this. I was so
pissed listening to a talk radio program earlier in the week where they had
some nimrod from the Hall of the Fame saying that "there would never be any
hard rock inducted in, that there wasn't a place for it..." You wouldn't
believe the comments from listeners after that! I feel now is the time and
place for people to inundate them with letters and comments. I suggest
that the letters/emails be sent in a professional and pleasant manner, but
still getting the point across - I mean if you have someone sending their
support who's saying f-this and f-that, then the Hall of Fame won't take it
serious and they'll consider us just a bunch of burnouts.

Does anyone know if the NMS is taking any action on this?

ok, i must've accidentally deleted the jam where this originally came, so
chances are, i missed more of what this person had to say about my
disappointment about rush not making the rnrhof.

    >Why are you people so shocked that Rush didn't get in. Look at how long i=
    t
    >took Pink Floyd to get in? Hell, look at how long it is taking other grea=

    >about Billy Joel getting hit by a fucking truck, I want you to think of o=

    >heard that song, or some of his other early unreleased shit, why would yo=
    u
    >say that? Yes, his later works do have a bad taste for me, but Billy was =
    my
    >piano god until I met the likes of prog keyboardists, so back off.

why am i shocked? ok. this is directly off the rnrhof website:

"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of
their first record. Criteria considered includes the influence and
significance of the artist=92s contribution to the development and
perpetuation of rock and roll. Similar criteria is used for the
non-performer category which includes songwriters, producers, disc
jockeys, record company executives, journalists and other industry
    professionals."

    1) that explains why it took floyd and the who "so long" to get in, first =
    of
    all.
    2) looking at the criteria mentioned above, i STILL don't understand why r=
    ush
wasn't in. maybe i'm being a little picky, because after all, they'll alwa=
    ys
be eligible for induction (not like the baseball hall of fame, where after=
     a
certain amount of years, if you don't get in, you can't unless some senior=
    ity
commission or something votes you in years later- someone back me up if yo=
    u
know what i mean). but picky or not, rush's induction this year imo would'=
    ve
sent a message to the rock listening world that prog rock WAS and STILL IS=
     an
important genre of rock that can't be ignored.
    3) as for you not appreciating that i wish billy joel got hit by the fucki=

In the last awe-inspiring digest of good humor:

The "O" moaned of his German use:
    >I once said "Ich hat eine Computern"

That's ok, JFK once said, "Ich bin eine Berliner."

Bruce stopped singing his "Philosopher's Song" and said of Bruce:
    >What I can't understand is BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN? wtf?

You have a point there. Actually, I was having a conversation with a
friend about this yesterday, when one of his crap songs came on the radio
in the restaurant in which we were enjoying a fine repast. She wondered if
his songs mightn't sound better as sung by other people (as in the case of
Bob Dylan). I pointed out the cover of "Ghost of Tom Joad" that Rage
Against the Machine did, which I find far better than the original. I
begin to wonder if Dylan sang "Glory Days" I might not like it better...

    My thoughts on Different Stages:
While the setlist may not appease the hardcore fanatic, as a casual
appreciator of their oeuvre, it represents a good overview of their work
for the past x number of years. Maybe it has too many of their radio hits,
but only to encourage airplay of the new material: as evidenced by "The
Spirit of Radio" which I heard on the radio earlier this week. Whenever
the radio plays Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain" now, they always use the live
version from the Secret World tour album he released. And yes, the "bonus"
CD is worth the price of the whole thing. And, one last thing, I'm really
pissed that someone was able to get OiaL for under $20. /me throws himself
on the floor and kicks/punches the ground like a fucking 3-year-old.

    Until the next time.

    Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a while but this sparked something in

    OH YAWN....

Shirley is the producer at the moment - deal with it. They will not
write another I&W - deal with it, I'm sorry but I just can't be doing
with this again...! The reason James is not "perfect" on OIAL is
because he doesn't get to redo things in the studio (note the "Santa
Claus" effect that Derek mentions on his web page when discussing Kiss
Alive III). OIAL is a fucking awsome live album, it captures DT live,
er...not in the studio. I think you may have something though...I do
hope that the next cd has great songs on it but the performance is under
par - then they can really wow us on the tour.

Could someone tell the URL for the original ACOS version in MP3. I think
its the one from The Dance Of Eternity Live in Long Island 93. Anyway, the
URL was posted last week, and I downloaded it. Someone deleted the 19.3Mb
mp3 file by accident before I got to listen to it. I need the location so
I can go and get. Email me privat and post to the Jam. I'm sure there are
more people that lost the URL.

    Thanks

I was pretty sure it was gonna be great but it blew me away totally. The boys have outdone themselves again. Hail Dream Theater.

After being jerked around by record contract bullshit (or whatever, I don't know the details, but I know it sucked all around!) which prevented the music from being available to the fans, Jon has released a jem of a CD called with his own sweat! As he likes to put it: "Fuck you Goliath" (check his web site for the full story :)

The disc is available via his web site (http://jonfinn.com) and the turnaround time, after sending my check in, was most acceptable. Let's get out and support him! It's a crucial time now when the band is out there trying to get recognition.

    Not about the music:

    - If you're looking for a disc with 80 minutes of nothing but heavy metal shred, see ya :)

    - If you're the kind of person who simply can't hold themselves together when they see a disc with less than 60 minutes of total music (this one checks in at 56:55), see ya :)

    - If you're expecting music completely devoid of 4/4 time, see ya :)

    - If you're looking for deep meaning in the lyrics, FuhGetAboutIt, there's no lyrics on this baby, baby.... see ya :)

    About the music:

OK, if you ARE looking for a band that has a command of everything from prog (including some nasty odd-time signature shred, metal boyeeee :) to jazz to classical to blues to spacy keyboard sounds to funky bass, to all out groove...well then, hello there!!

I believe the keyboardist owns the recording studio where the CD was recorded and mixed. The sound quality is excellent. All instruments can be heard just fine :)

If you like a good balance between technique and soul, you'll enjoy this stuff. One listen to the 15 minutes or so of musical exploration found in "Pompous Music Suite" and there's no question Jon and the gang have the theoretical knowledge. He's got more than enough ability to play something that's been written down on a piece of paper. Anyone can do that. They rip it up on that song!

Seeing them take a theme and improv on it is worth the price of admission. The thing that gets me going with them is where the stuff is all coming from (the soul)! You just have to see them live to really understand what I mean (and hopefully you will, if they get the support they deserve). They just have so much fun up there, and the jams which come pouring out of the band reflect it. Putting the egos aside and risking vulnerability up there on stage by being completely spontaneous, they come out with some great stuff that goes beyond the musical staff.

As I've already said in previous posts, the drummer is quite intense to watch. He has groove written all over his playing (his beads of sweat even hit the deck on the offbeat!), not to mention one heck of a bass drum foot! That part in the middle of Ashley's Star where they kick it in contains some really sweet, clean, drum work. If that section were a little longer, it would easily be classified as "Wicked Pissa" :) I'd actually be curious to know what some of the drummers on this list of him. This guy impresses the heck out of me :)

As far as the other musicians go, I believe they're all faculty members at Berklee, too. The bass player is excellent, and the recent addition of a keyboardist adds some great textures. I remember seeing him jam with them the first time and he just plugged right into the groove! There's an overall synergy in this band that's just so much more than the sum of 4 faculty members getting together and playing. Perhaps remaning the band to "Gestalt" would be a good PR move? :)

Since I feel everyone deserves to experience it the first time for themselves, I tried to stay away from spoiling things by picking apart the insides of each song or whatever. But here's a little peeky from the liner notes regarding a Jeff Beck tune they cover:

"Many bands choose cover songs as a means to increase accessibility. So of course we chose the most obscure song we could find by a major artist."

    :)

I suggest for anyone that enjoys at least bands like Dream Theater AND Steve Morse AND Stevie Ray Vaughan, in other words variety on a disc, go pick it up.
