Since the tour started yesterday (11/13/98), I doubt too many people on this
list have seen the show yet. I did, and there was one other 'jammer there,
so...anyway, Hammerfall was the opener and played to a very enthusiastic crowd
for their first U.S. date ever. I think they were pleasantly surprised.
However, Hammerfall, even though they played well, didn't do a whole lot to
impress me, as their music is a *bit* too straight-forward, and at times
borders on the cheesy. Death was Death. Technically impressive, but a bit
repetitive.

Good one moo!
Ytseworld, can we be impartial enough to see this thing clear?
Nevermind OUR tastes (we love prog, old 'n new), but does actualyl those
old prog bands influenced enough of the present music??? Not according
to us, according the public!!!
Were (Are) all those Yes, Jethro Tull, Rush, Gentle Giant, Focus, Camel
bands really appretited and praised in music history?

OH YEAH DUDE! :)
I LOOOVE that Dazed and Confused weird Page's solo with the movie
sequences on it! I would appretiate it to hear some explanations of WHAT
does it mean? :)
Dark scarry night, barefoot Page's climbing dangerous cliffs toward
oldman with lifted lantern in his hand... Ya got it already! :)
If not anyone else, yo Matija, can you give it a try? Post privately if
ya
Phew, it's been a long time since I last saw that one! Speaking on those
days, gotta go now and watch the awesome Deep Purple "California Jam"
concert! All who didn't see it - drop dead, since you missed THE lecture

Yo people who dis american songwriting (and we should emphasize that term) icons Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen should refrain from such bad karma inducing tendencies to do such a thing. They have longevity for a reason. Lets hope our progressive bands last that long, integrity intact. And also, PArty on, dudes.

I noticed that people have been putting reviews of recent albums in the Ytsejam. These include the new Yngwie live CD and the new King's X album. Perhaps it would be worth pointing out that: A) A lot of recent albums are reviewed in W3M3 magazine (http://www.scriba.org/w3m3), including these albums. You might want to compare reviews to see multiple opinions. B) I am always on the lookout for people who'd like to write reviews for W3M3. Hi all!
Just read my new digest of "The St. Cleve Chronicle" - The Jethro Tull mailing list. Boy, many grandpas here! :) Like, " I first went Tull's concert back in 1972!" Huh, I wasn't even born! ;)
Anyway, I was WAY surprised to read this from older subscriber to the list:
> I would also mention that a new "band" of sorts called > 'Explorer's Club' from Magna Carta Records has recently released > an album called "Age of Impact". I would call this very "hard" > progressive rock--not to everyone's tastes. It features Terry > Bozzio on drums, Bill Sheehan and John Petrucci. The album was > conceived and produced by Trent Gardner of Magellan fame. What's > interesting is Trent Gardner's liner notes where he makes it > very clear that he is a tried and true Tull afficionado. > > As further testament to Tull, one of the tracks on > "Age of Impact" has some extremely Ian Anderson-esque flute > playing, so that I half-expected to see his name as one of the > guest artists. (It's not). This album is a bit hard for my > tastes, but it does have some glorious moments.
He-he-he. I guess the grandpa can't handle those balls 'n chunk guitar riffs! ;) But at least he likes it and probably has it.
I already presented Dream Theater and Magellan to this mailing list, since I don't think these folks see what's going on very much tese days (like they can see DT on MTV or so! :(( )
Hope you found this interesting to share it with ya! :)
P.S. Jaco boy, you better send those CDs so that I don't embarrass myself speaking about albums I don't owe yet! ;)))))

When I first discovered Dream Theater at the end of last year, every element of the band, except some of the keyboards, pulled me in strongly. I absolutely love LaBrie's voice in the studio. I thought he sounded good when I saw them in Hinckley, but some of the live stuff I've listened to supports the comments about the difficulty of matching up to that all the time. While I agree that Cornell would be very interesting, I hope LaBrie is here to stay for a while.

The original printing of the first book ("Dragons of Autumn Twilight") was 1984.
BTW, I first read these books when I was in junior-high..... and they really left a long-lasting impression on me. Good stuff.

I just got Heavy Machinery by Johansson, Johansson and Holdsworth. This is a very good disk. Its heavy fusion, has lots of weird time sigs and some very skilled playing is done in the more extended jams.
Now DT content.
As we all know when DT finished making FII they had few left over songs. If you could choose one song that DT would re-record and put on the next studio album, what would it be? I think I would have to go with Raise the Knife. I love this song, just wish I could find a copy with the lyrics. It has to be out there somewhere...I remember hearing it before DT took the stage. It was played between the opening act and DT while the tech crew were setting their gear up.
later all,
== John
