    First off, YEEEEEHAH!! Damn straight they play NJ over my winter break.

    Secondly, where did you find this information? I didn't see it on UACM,

    Last jam someone mentioned a few Blind Guardian songs, The Lord of the
    Rings, The Eldar, and Noldor. Now, I know pretty much nothing about BG
    (aside from what's occasionally been mentioned in the jam), so sorry if I
    sound stupid here, but, at least by the titles, these songs are obviously
    taken from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. This really intrigues me,
    so I am interested in checking this out. Is the band worth looking into,
    or would it really be a waste of my time?
    Oh, and Dragonlance does kick ass

    and then i realize i gotta get up in three hours and i get depressed

    but anyway

    > Metallica is the name most often mentioned by casual or non
    > listeners of metal when asked to name a metal band

    there's a reason for this......non-metal fan asked to name a metal
    band......"hmmm? metal? can't stand the stuff, but, lemme
    think....metal....metal.....metallica? what do they play? no kidding!
    hey, I must be smarter than i thought i was"

    on to point two
    About the new Ytsejam shirts......is there anybody else on this list who
    would like to get a new yttsejam shirt, seeing how after three years of
    use, the old use is starting to show the wear and tear, but somehow,
    even though the shirts look cool and all, just can't spring for it?

    if you've answered yes, how many of you are holding out, like me,
    because you think the inclusion of that definition is too fucking
    pretentious, and plays too much right into the hands of all the critics
    who dismiss progressive musicians and their fans as being musicsnobs
    (apologies to Kevin Madden for appropriation of nick)

    Maybe i should apologize to Josh, as well....since he put the work in to
    come up with what is really a very cool product....but it's just that
    one little thing, I'd always feel like i was a teacher or Mr. Rogers or
    something...."look kids, this is prog....can you say progressive? there,
    i knew you could......"

    buy the shirt anyway
    (not that i feel any guilt for trying to be like microsoft and
    interfering with some poor guy's business......)

    but i'm babbling, and the clock says 333, which means it's halfway to
    666 and that can't be a good thing, can it?

    Hey, I was wondering about something...when you're a DTIFC member, how
    do you change the mailing address they have on record for you? I live
    in a dorm, and the address I had when I subscribed changed...I think
    I've gotten an issue of I&W this semester at my new mailbox, but I don't
    want to risk some other jerkoff with my old mailbox getting the Xmas CD
    while I get shit...that would be suicide-inducing. If this issue has
    been addressed previously on the jam, sorry, but you other engineering
    students know what it's like, you read as many jams as you can, but not
    always thoroughly or completely, you miss some here and there...sad but
    true. So, any info you could give me (whether privately or to the jam,
    since I guess there could other people concerned about this too) would
    be much appreciated...I missed the Xmas CD last year, and I don't want
    to this year. Thanks. By the way anyone who's debating buying the
    latest Opeth album "My Arms, Your Hearse", stop debating, it's a great
    album, but listen to it all the way through with your best headphones
    when you get it, I assure you it's quite an experience. Later.

    {Snip}

    VERY WELL SAID. Thank you! When are people going to realize how
    difficult is is for LaBrie to reproduce his work in the studio?
    Don't you people understand how low the mic gain is to avoid feedback
    with the PA system? This forces the vocalist to sing at a MUCH higher
    amplitude than normal JUST TO BE HEARD!

    In the studio environment if the vocalist is having a bad day, HE GOES HOME.
    This is not on the options list when performing live. If a guitar player breaks a
    string the guitar tech hands him a another guitar tuned up and ready to boogie;
    If a vocalist damages his/her voice they are at the mercy of the healing process.
    Smoke filled venues can really add to the problem, what other instruments are
    breathing dependent? NONE! A smoke filled room will cause a persons lungs
    and throat to produce phlegm, and this happens quickly. Once this has happened
    the vocal cords don't vibrate quite the same, particularly in the upper registers.

    Very few vocalists are capable of doing what James does in the studio,
    Even fewer could pull it off live. Ray Alder may be the exception.
    (Ray normally sings loud enough to remove the enamel from your teeth if you
    stand too close.) Many of the "high range" singers in rock music are screamers,
    How would you even know when they fucked up?

    Here is a short list of upper register vocalists that *I* think do a great job live:
    Ray Alder (duh) Enough said
    James LaBrie (think about it)
    Geoff Tate (Queensryche) Geoff has his lousy moments, too.
    Klaus Meine (Scorpions) Sometimes a screamer.
    Dennis DeYoung & Tommy Shaw (Styx) Material not that challenging.
    Bruce Dickinson (Maiden & BD) Not bad at all.
    Rob Halford (Judas Priest & RH) Usually Screams live :(

    Vocalists that REALLY SUCK live: (IMHO)
    Brad Delp (Boston) MR. YUK, LIVE!
    Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) He screams live, and it sucks.
    Vince Neil (Motley Crue) This guy butchers his own material.
    Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) Age has taken it's toll, he used to be damn good.
    (Don't flame me on this one unless you've heard DP live in the 70s, I have.)

    There are soooooo many more to add to the suck list, but most of them
    belong in the screamer category. Gives James a break.

    /Al is curious how many of LaBrie's critics are vocalist themselves?

    NP: Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" Gotta love that groove!

    With Ted Nugent in the NRA and Jesse (The BODY) Ventura elected to
    govern Minnesota, things are looking up! Jesse want's Aerosmith to play
    at his inaugural. That would rule. Minnesota will kick ass, not just the Vikings.
    (Sorry, I had to slip that one in.)

    P.S. Hey bafu, you forgot to add Jon Anderson (YES) to your list of people
    that sing as they speak. Jon is enjoyable, the ones you mentioned should have
    never been let near a microphone.

    Hmmm... Angra is alright, especially Holy Land, but I wouldn't go as far as saying that Fireworks is better.... It seems to me that Fireworks is far less complex than Holy Land, with a lot of Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Solo/Chorus song structures... You said you found Angra similar to DT... Well, I hope your opinion is not based on Fireworks, because I can't find any similarities with DT on that one. Even on Holy Land Angra have their own style, i.e. much faster than DT (occasionaly), heavier etc... The only thing I can think of is that the songs on Holy Land are more like compositions than real songs, just like on I&W... Carolina IV is just amazing...

    I forgot what the point was is I was trying to make, but hell

    And I just picked up Rhapsody's Symphony Of Enchanted Lands... As soon as I leave the PC-room here at university I'm gonna SIT BACK and ENJOY....

    Hi all

    here's the first of the reviews I promised last week. I'm restricting this posting to the new album by The Gathering because it is simply so good - having other reviews in the same e-mail would be doing this album a terrible injustice.

    THE GATHERING - How To Measure A Planet?

    This is possibly the most difficult review I've written. No matter what I say, I'll miss things out, not express myself clearly enough, not find the right words, but here goes anyway. The main news is that The Gathering have changed - you will find hardly anything here that sounds like Mandylion, and only a few things that remind you of Nighttime Birds. However, I think they have changed for the better. They are now a five piece, their second guitarist having decided to go different ways. This obviously moves the main emphasis of the music away from the old Gathering guitar sound, and opens up space for the keyboards, and this space is filled wonderfully. When I first listened to the first track I would have sworn that I was listening to something new by The 3rd And The Mortal, and this impression lasts throughout almost the whole two CDs. This new sound is particularly apparent in the sound of the percussion, but also the increased use of acoustic guitars and guitar effects and loops remind me of this great Norwegian band. Overall, the songs are very dreamy and ambient, with sounds drifting in and out of focus, and heavy breaks keeping you on your toes, for example in the third track "Rescue Me". The more up-tempo "Liberty Bell" is more like the older stuff and an obvious candidate for a (successful) single release. Extensive use is made of samples, most of which seem to come from space missions. Then, of course, there is Anneke's voice - if you believe in the good lord, then he was having a great day when he installed her vocal chords. Her entire performance is flawless, everything perfectly clean, ranging from sultry whispers to powerful deliveries. Her articulation is so clear that it makes the lyric sheet totally superfluous. The five songs on the second CD are possibly a little more experimental, especially the 25 minute title track. This has a middle section that reminds me of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" or even some of their earlier stuff like "Careful With That Axe Eugene". There are also samples that sound like they were lifted from early Tangerine Dream albums (e.g. Rubycon or Phaedra). Another major plus point in my books is the use mellotrons. If you're looking for a little escape for 25 minutes, light a few candles, pour yourself a good whiskey, put on the title track, shut your eyes, sit back and float away. Nothing on this album is too much - no overwhelming solos, the keyboards aren't bombastic (which easily happens with this sort of music), the samples are just right, the guitars are often fuzzed but not beyond recognition. I think the band's motto for this album must have been reduce to the maximum. Whoever runs the poll for this year can already put my vote down. I'm looking forward very much to hearing this music live when the band come to Germany in January. I think I can seriously say that I haven't been so impressed by a new album since I first heard Tiamat's Wildhoney. It's just a shame that I can't give more than 10/10. (Dave Peterson - now that I've really got you interested I'll see about getting you a copy).

    Did I mention that I hope Holland give Germany a good going-over on Wednesday?

    When you can perform the song live in one take as well as in the studio (multiple takes, individually recorded tracks, overdubs, editing, etc.), then it will be time for you to leave.

    > I for one would rather see DT live than listen to one of their albums. > But maybe that's just me.

    It's not. I haven't really listened all that critically to OIAL but I think James' voice on (at least) 5YIAL is quite good.

    Speaking of DT live I suggest that they consider the Orpheum, if Boston becomes part of their plans for a holiday gig. I hadn't seen a concert there in a while but this past Friday I caught Joe Satriani live. Great performance, he played for close to 2 1/2 hours, and had the house making a lot of noise.

    The thing with the Orpheum is that the acoustics are just so sweet (it used to be an opera house). After what I heard about the Roxy show, what with it being cut short for Ricko Suave night, I'm glad I didn't shell out any cash for that one. They'd have the Orpheum all night. I've seen DT play in only 3 or 4 places, but all of them were never really desgined for listening to music. The Orpheum is.

    > If they don't have that right, does ANYONE? How do you define a "good" > version? Do you expect those songs to sound exactly like the album, > and if so, why not just buy the album? If you want them to sound > really different and NOT be like the

    I imagine that for a lot of folk, the first instance of the song is, in many cases, the yardstick unfortunately. Comparing and constrasting is fun, but seeing as how I don't have a test on it tomorrow, why bother? I could be wrong, but I bet the guys would be bored out of their skulls playing it precisely the same way night after night. Hmmm, maybe that's why Mike is spitting on his teamates: to throw their timing off so they'll play it a little different :)

    The live concert experience is all about real time and immersing oneself in the moment, not constantly referencing it to something else. I happen to be one who enjoys hearing a new interpreation of a riff, or a section of a song. To me it's like, for a moment, I'm hearing a song they've never done before.

    I remember hearing CIA9ITG at the Fix for '96 show I attended and it was great. Yeah, ok, I knew the original song already, but I wasn't going "WTF's wrong, are they on barbituates?" I was too busy feeling the groove! It'd be nice if we could completely shut off what we already know of a song, but only the most trained of sensai have that ability and they generally don't have time to come down from the mountain to catch a heavy metal concert :) Isn't something new from the guys what everyone is screaming for anyways...the day after a new DT disc comes out? :)

    I don't understand your language....now go away!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thought the following from http://jonfinn.com/gigs.html would be of interest as it seems Jon is planning several bombing missions down the East Coast:
    Sat., Dec. 5 - Hub Music Pembroke, MA (rt.139) 1:00 PM In store appearance (617)826-3036
    Thurs., Dec 10 - Slattery's Fitchburg, MA (rt. 2a) 978-342-8880
    Wed., Jan 27, 1999 Johnny D's Somerville, MA (17 Holland St.) 617-776-2004
    Mon., June 28, 1999 National Guitar Summer Workshop Lakeside, CT.
    We are also working on dates in the VA and DC areas. Apparently, WFQX (Winchester, VA) has taken quite a liking to Wicked) for Mid January.
    The trek to Europe will have to wait until February or March. But the logistical points are being worked on here too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Oh yeah, about "Once the stone" being sung too many times on HY? I really wish they didn't repeat "OHHHHHHHHH, OHHHHH OHHH OHHH" so many fucking times at the end of LTL, either...it just totally ruins the whole song!!! And does Kevin have to repeat the same lick during the intro so many times? Sheesh!!!!
    That was sarcasm, boyeee. If you didn't get it, then you shall be forced to hear "Once the stone" on infinite repeat as we bury you in the sand :)
