    Greetings my people!

Ah yes well, I just got Rush Different Stages and I have to say that it is
awsome and it is well worth getting. I truly hope that this is not the
last thing that we see from Rush. I know that Neil is going through hell
right now and my request for more sounds selfish but hey, I am a Rush
fanatic! So sue my Rush lovin' ass:)

Before last night, when I got the above mentioned masterpiece, OIALT ruled
my Cd player. I realize that this review is late but WTF. I LOVED it!!!
The thing that really made the difference was the fact that the keyboards
were up front and clearly heard for once! All the music sounds wonderfull.
I got a lot of energy listening to it.O.K. time for the complaints. As
far as performance goes the disc is beautiful except when James fouled up
on TTT. However the real bitch is that I've heard all this stuff before.
There was nothing new to intice me with. Most live Cd's have at least 1 or
2 new tracks on them.(Note Rush was saved from this ugly mark because they
had Rythm Method....and yes it is a drum solo but it has so much soul I
consider it a song unto itself!)

Ah well now I have 5 new cds, filled with great music to listen to and a
new Robert Jordan book! Fuck, life doesnt get better than this!

After reading several people likes and dislikes about OIAL I figure I'd
    toss in my
two cents. First I'd like to say I love the album. The sound quality is
    tremendous,
I can hear just about every key that Derek hits (the keyboardist is usually
    the one
that has the lowest sound level for some weird reason). Labrie doesn't
    pronounce
everything perfect, then again he doesn't on all the studio albums, but
    some people
should get over it. His voice is still one of the best out there and I'd
    step over my
own mother to have a voice 1/2 as good live as his is on this cd. Not being
    able to
see them on this tour was somewhat depressing...this definately made up for
    it.
To add to the comment about a live cd not being near the feelings of being
    at the
show, I have to agree. There is MUCH MUCH MUCH more emotion at the show.
The closest you can really come with a live cd is when you have it in
    cranking out
at about 140 watts annoying EVERYONE other than yourself in you apartment
     complex ;-)

I saw some comparisons to Fates Warning's Still Life, more specifically to
    the vocals
in SL being compared to OIAL. Though I LOVE Ray Adler's studio albums I
    haven't
been that impressed with him live (and I've seen them several times from
    the No Exit
album and on touring). SL is a good live cd but I was really disappointed
    when I heard
the Ivory Gate of Dreams (whoever said this is one of their worst albums is
    totally out
on the street corner smoking crack, Ray uses the hell out of his voice on
    this album!)
live. Ray got completely screechy on a few parts and I was having high
    school
flashbacks to girls running their finger nails down a chalkboard a few
    times.

In general, I do like both albums and I would continue to buy both live and
    studio
     albums from both.

Oh yeah!! - these shirts make contacting people on concerts a lot easier,
though I only experienced it once. It was after the DT performed in Great
Woods, MA during the DT/ELP/DP tour - there was a break during DT and ELP
sets so everybody went to hang out.
I kept walking around looking for DT fans and there seemed to be pretty
many of them but noone knew anything about the YtseJam list and it was
quite sad. Not until I bumped into a group of people among who one gal had
an YtseJam T-shirt on, needless to say taht meeting you guys was very
cool!!! Especially that this was my first (and so far the only one) DT show
    I ever visited!
Sorry that I didn't get in touch with you people after that show, but I
somehow went travelling all over the US and returned back to Boston only 2
days before I left back to Moscow.
And above all - I lost your e-mails...
As for the shirts - I think I'll present it to myself for Christmas this
time, so the next time I go to see DT (hopefully in MA again) I'll be
    wearing it! :-)

    Hey fellow jammers,

In 5YIAL, when DT is playing in Finland, there's a scene where Mike Portnoy
    is
talking with Pantera's drummer. If you noticed in the background, there are
    a couple of guys
talking, and suddenly, one of them kiss another. Not that I have anything against

On the off chance I can get a remark in here before Jason Breitweg jumps in
-- it depends on your tastes. :) Myself, I think Blind Guardian is
worth checking out regardless, but then they have a lot of things I like: a
good vocalist (an interestingly gravelly tone but without cookie-monster
grating), balls-to-the-wall pure metal playing, two very good guitarists,
and a superb drummer. Plus cool atmosperic keys thrown in here and there
and lots of harmony group vocals to contrast Hansi's gravelly voice.

BG does have lots of Tolkien references in earlier discs (enough for
somebody, I don't recall who, to call them Elf-Metal), but the latest
offering "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" is a concept album based on Tolkien's
story "The Silmarillion". So yes, there are very definite Tolkien
    references. :)

    >Oh, and Dragonlance does kick ass.

Yes, it does. Now I'd like to see a concept album based on the Dragonlance
chronicles. That would kick. The closest I've seen is Rhapsody's "Legendary
Tales" which uses the font the Dragonlance books do on their covers. :)

    ta,
    Phil

Yup I am back on dry land again, surviving breaking down 4 times in
Australia's roughest ocean, so unluckery for you, here goes :)

OiaLT: some of you should get off your bleeding high horses, it's a live
album for christ sakes, capturing a night of music, not six months of
studio work. If James had over dubbed all his vox, you same ppl would
have bitched about it being too good !
I am more disappointed about the content, more so this would have been
perfect for 'Eve', how many fans
don't have this song on a CD ? My guess is pleny..ah well.

Still Life: We are spoiled with Ray Adler's magnificent voice and the
    set list is quite superb.

Symphony X, live: Now anyone who has seen them live, or heard the mp3
from OAN page, do you think the back vox are sampled or straight from
the horses mouth's, I am 50/50, anyone else have an opinion ?

Great live Vocalists, Glenn Hughes has the best voice in rock and live
he is even better, check out 'Burning Japan Live' for proof that this
guy is the best ever rock singer. Eric Adams from Manowar (no laughing
    please)
is another great with a great live voice too.

Rhapsody, I don't have the new cd yet, anyone want to give me a review
    please ?

    cheers

Yeah, the last two songs you mentioned are from BGs newest album
'Nightfall in Middle-Earth', which is based on 'The Silmarillion'. The
first song was from an older album called 'Tales from the Twilight World'.

And hell yeah you should check them out! While not exactly
prog-metal, they have a unique and interesting sound and write more
complex songs than most metal bands, at the same time managing to be
fast and powerful metal. Lyrics are often based on sci-fi and fantasy
literature, while being nowhere near cheesy (Rhapsody, anyone? ... sorry
=). Tolkien's stuff is evident in many songs. It seems like many some
people have problems with Hansi's voice, but then again some people go
absolutely nuts about it. I'm in the latter category.

I've noticed before that you're an avid Iron Maiden fan, so I'm a
little bit surprised you haven't tried them yet. Start with the newest and
maybe 'Imaginations From the Other Side' too. Let us know how it goes =).

And yes, I could've sent this private, but why should Jason take
all the burden of advertising this awesome band ;)

If you're a Tolkien fan definitely check out BG's new concept album Nightfall in Middle Earth, which is brilliant. The lyrics are based on one of stories from the Silmarillion and features BG further pressing the limits of metal with an almost full blown musical style. Definitely worth listening too. Also, they're older material features some songs as Gandalf Returns, The Bard's Tale: The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. THey are big Tolkien fans, as well as fans of sci-fi in general. Check em out.

Well, I think that Blind Guardian's most definitive album has to be their most recent: Nightfall on Middle Earth. Blind Guardian's earlier efforts are most definitely straight power metal, with bits and pieces of a more neoclassical sound creeping in the more recent efforts. That is, until Nightfall came around.

Nightfall is the most amazing studio album of 1998, in my hogfucking opinion. It is the tale of JRRT's "The Silmarillion" in musical form. Each song is interspersed with battle scenes, or character narratives, or 30 second folk classical tunes. The songs themselves are very neoclassical power metal, if you have the latest Rhapsody albums, think that kinda sound, but much darker, and (IMHO again) much more emotional and powerful. There are no cookie monster vocals, but neither are most of the vocals in the operatic styles that most neoclassical bands embrace nowadays. This a mean album, with songs about betrayal (Into the Storm), death (Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)), and revenge (The Curse of Feanor). There are ballads (more like funeral dirges), The Noldor and Blood Tears each are songs mourning things that are now lost.

The album (like most other great albums nowadays) is unavailable at the moment in the US. It is available in Europe and Japan, and is soon to be available in the US under Century Media (or so I hear). Jason Breitweg is the resident BG expert on the Jam, and if he hasn't replied already, I'll shut up now and let him add his two cents. But IMHO, go get this album NOW!

    Hey everyone,

Since there has been talk of the Jon Finn Group lately, (Ok, so Jon Parmet brings them up in every post...big deal...) I decided to make some MP3s from when the Jon Finn Group opened for Dream Theater at Hampton Beach on August 4, 1998. There are 7 MP3s available and they can be found at:

    mindcrime@mindcrime.mit.edu/mp3s/Jon_Finn_Group/">ftp://mindcrime:mindcrime@mindcrime.mit.edu/mp3s/Jon_Finn_Group/

If I may suggest one MP3 in particular, it would be jonfinn4.mp3, which is entitled, "If Stevie Ray Vaughn Went to Berklee and Studied Jazz". However, all of the songs he performed that night were great and should be downloaded. :)

So what are you waiting for? Fire up that FTP program!

    -Bogie

PS - Before I get a ton of emails about this, yes, I recorded the Dream Theater show that night, and yes, the Dream Theater performance I will be releasing in late December/early January has the same quality as these Jon Finn MP3s.

Blind Guardian's great. One of the best power metal bands I've heard. Actually, they write more out of The Silmarillian than The Lord of The Rings. Awesome stuff...get Nightfall on the Middle Earth and Somewhere Far Beyond.

OK, come on here. You forgot in the good singers live category Steve Perry from Journey. And Brad Delp as a bad singer live? I don't know about that. I saw boston live a few years ago and he rocks. And don'st think that Styx's material isn't that easy. It really isn't. Yeah, it's no Dream theater, but it is easy. I have to say that in recent years, Geddy Lee's voice has become kind of unpredictable especially in older material. Listen to Different Stages and Spirit of Radio from that album. Geddy sounds strong in some parts but shaky in others. I haven't listened to the whole CD to know for sure, but I have heard enough boots to know that Geddy has had his rough moments. And you forgot John Anderson from Yes. Sounds great on live albums at least and I have heard that he is great live. Greg Lake from ELP is good as well. And Phil collins from Genesis, well before he left anyway. At 06:14 AM 11/16/1998 -0800, you wrote: The great and powerful Bafu wrote: {Big snip} >Do us all a favor. There are only two {Snip} VERY WELL SAID. Thank you! When are people going to realize how difficult is is for LaBrie to reproduce his work in the studio? Don't you people understand how low the mic gain is to avoid feedback with the PA system? This forces the vocalist to sing at a MUCH higher amplitude than normal JUST TO BE HEARD! In the studio environment if the vocalist is having a bad day, HE GOES HOME. This is not on the options list when performing live. If a guitar player breaks a string the guitar tech hands him a another guitar tuned up and ready to boogie; If a vocalist damages his/her voice they are at the mercy of the healing process. Smoke filled venues can really add to the problem, what other instruments are breathing dependent? NONE! A smoke filled room will cause a persons lungs and throat to produce phlegm, and this happens quickly. Once this has happened the vocal cords don't vibrate quite the same, particularly in the upper registers. Very few vocalists are capable of doing what James does in the studio, Even fewer could pull it off live. Ray Alder may be the exception. (Ray normally sings loud enough to remove the enamel from your teeth if you stand too close.) Many of the "high range" singers in rock music are screamers, How would you even know when they fucked up? Here is a short list of upper register vocalists that *I* think do a great job live: Ray Alder (duh) Enough said James LaBrie (think about it) Geoff Tate (Queensryche) Geoff has his lousy moments, too. Klaus Meine (Scorpions) Sometimes a screamer. Dennis DeYoung & Tommy Shaw (Styx) Material not that challenging. Bruce Dickinson (Maiden & BD) Not bad at all. Rob Halford (Judas Priest & RH) Usually Screams live :( Vocalists that REALLY SUCK live: (IMHO) Brad Delp (Boston) MR. YUK, LIVE! Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) He screams live, and it sucks. Vince Neil (Motley Crue) This guy butchers his own material. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) Age has taken it's toll, he used to be damn good. (Don't flame me on this one unless you've heard DP live in the 70s, I have.) There are soooooo many more to add to the suck list, but most of them belong in the screamer category. Gives James a break. /Al is curious how many of LaBrie's critics are vocalist themselves? NP: Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" Gotta love that groove! With Ted Nugent in the NRA and Jesse (The BODY) Ventura elected to govern Minnesota, things are looking up! Jesse want's Aerosmith to play at his inaugural. That would rule. Minnesota will kick ass, not just the Vikings. (Sorry, I had to slip that one in.) P.S. Hey bafu, you forgot to add Jon Anderson (YES) to your list of people that sing as they speak. Jon is enjoyable, the ones you mentioned should have never been let near a microphone. -- AL... It wasn't going too well, so she looked at me and said, "What's the matter, can't you think of anyone either?" --Rodney Dangerfield
