It's a vocal technique. Gets air moving through vocal chords before you
have to actually put notes out. It's much easier to slide up to a high
note than it is to just belt it out right as you begin to exhale. You're
supposed to do it silently, but it's difficult to think of everything in
the middle of a song. :) Take care...

just when i thought Different stages had found a near permanent (meaning
for about two weeks straight) home in my CD player, the mailbox gods
shine a smile of fortune upon me.....
quick background....long time ago, i had Iron Maiden's Live after Death
on cassette.....it died, and there was no afterlife after my stupid sony
got done munching on it.....
finally got around to ordering the CD.....the 2 CD with enhanced stuff
on the second disc......and we can just all put to rest all this silly
debate about OIAL, Different Stages and Still Life......although still
life is the best of those three......
Live After Death is THE live album, any questions?

On the whole "Live Labrie" issue: I think he sounds unbelievable
throughout the entire album. Sure there are some rough spots, but he's human.
Personally, I commend the band for not "fixing" those spots in the studio.

It DOES however contain some rambling, but I'm in a cheery mood - so I
feel like rambling. Deal with it.
(the subject heading IS partly in response to Partha's post about Bruce
Martyn) ;-)
Well, my luck in turning those sad souls who haven't yet discovered the
beauty of DT is beginning to change for the better. You see, at my new
place of work everybody there ISN'T rap-freaks like the old place!
*Evil grin* Human souls ripe for the pickings!
So, within a three day span this weekend I recorded 2 "kills" at work.
The first was totally unexpected, since I thought the kid only listened
to rap (which he does, but he also likes rock). The youngster in
question had been asking me for a few days for me to let him pull my car
up from the parking lot after work (he loves sports cars, and he's
severely lusting after mine). Anyhooo, as he's pulling it up, he heard
a moment or two of the Kamelot "Siege Perilous" CD that was in it. He
was pretty impressed, and told me that it sounded cool (which shocked
me..... since I thought he only listened to rap). So of course I tell
him that if he thought that was cool, he MUST check out DT. After
giving Awake a listen, he had to run out and buy it the next day! :-)
The other one was even easier. This girl (also young - in High School)
had pretty good musical taste, having listened to some rock (including a
bit of Rush), a bit of classical, and some other stuff. I was so sure
she'd like DT that I told her to go pick up "Images and Words", and if
she didn't like it, I'd buy it back from her.
Well, she's had it a few days and thinks rather highly of it! Her
favorite song so far is "Met Pt.1", which surprised me, since I figured
that one would take a while to grow on her. Oh, she also picked up
TSO's "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" and she likes that one too.
Those my friends, are my success stories for the weekend! I'm happy....
can you tell? :)
That's where you guys (and gals) come in. I now need a bit of help in
converting some more innocent prog-virgins!
I need a few tape suggestions:
Victim #1: OK, this guy listens to mostly heavy hardcore metal (Slayer,
etc.). He also does have an appreciation for Rush, mainly because of
Peart's drumming (the victim in question plays a bit of drums, so he can
appreciate good drumming at least). He's mostly into the heavy stuff
though, and I promised him mostly heavy. I'm thinking one 90 minute
tape, and I told him I'd throw in some DT (mainly heavier Awake stuff,
plus I think Met Pt. 1 would be good - since he'd be impressed by the
crazy drumming). Also I promised a heavy dose of Iced Earth (I have
Burnt Offerings, Dark Saga, and Something Wicked....), also perhaps a
bit of Testament (only have The Ritual and Practice What You Preach),
maybe a tad of Symphony X (from either Divine Wings... or
Twilight...).

basically have the same musical taste: General hard rock and a little
metal (Metallica), and classic rock (especially Led Zeppelin). I did
play a bit of Awake (Mirror/Lie, and Caught in a Web) for one of them,
and he enjoyed the crunchiness of it. They've both also expressed an
interest in learning about prog in general, so I figured I'd put alot of
Dream Theater (maybe 1/2 of the total or so), and fill the rest out with
other prog stuff (preferably staying away from too much really
high-pitched vocals ala Geddy Lee, old Tate, old Alder..... which one
guy said he doesn't like at all).
It seems like this might be hard to fit onto one tape, so I'm thinking
maybe 2 90 minute tapes for each of these guys (maybe 1 tape of DT, and
one of various prog). BTW, since they like classic rock, I also think
the
OiaL version of TTT might be good since it has that kickass Freebird
solo.
Here's some of the CD's I have, and am thinking of using.
DT - Probably 90 mins. worth... nice mix, little bit of everything,
(staying away from WDADU probably though)
Fates - anything after No Exit Superior - Behind
Savatage - anything Zak-era Shadow Gallery - any
Royal Hunt - Moving Target, Paradox Enchant - Blueprint...
Symphony X - Divine Wings... Twilight... Spock's Beard - any
Conception - Flow, In Your Multitude Stratovarius - Visions
Kamelot - Seige Perilous LTE - LTE
Kings X - Best of... (I know it's not necessarily prog.... but they'd
prolly dig it)

Many, many times while singing "Take The Time" live, James has pronounced the
line "it's time to pick up the pieces, go back to square one" as "it's time to
pick up the pieces go back to SQUEEHH WAAAHH!!" Sure it sounds funny when he
does this, but it's harder to hold consonants like "r" and "n" than it is to
hold "eh" and "ah" which are for the most part wide open vowels. (For a good
example of a vocalist holding consonants with just as much vibrato-power as
the vowels, check out Racer X "Live Extreme Volume.") It kind of makes sense
why he changed those words, but feel free to giggle if you ever hear it.
The address squeh_waah@vocalists.com does not exist as far as I know, but feel
free to create such an address and post to the list as if you're a Canadian
singer with the mouth of a longshoreman.
When we as a mailing list first started noticing this squeh-waah phenomenon it
became quite cool to make fun of James' pronunciation, and soon everyone was
chiming in with posts about their favorite James-isms. Then at the Fix For '96
shows James decided he'd had enough. One night he charged out on stage
flinging blocks of concrete at the crowd shouting at the top of his lungs
"SQUEEHH WAAAHH!! Here's yer fuckin' SQUEAH WAAAHH fuckin' shit!!" We don't
make fun of him anymore.

But here's why I think James does it, which may be completely wrong so you'll have to ask him for verification someday...
It's easier to gauge where your voice is if you hum a low note before blasting upwards. Hitting the right note perfectly from the moment you open your mouth (which is tough to do if you sing as loudly as James and want to be at full volume from the moment your mouth is open and correctly on-pitch engaging full vibrato "MAaAaAaAaAaAH!!") without any pre-note warm-up (such as a simple "ah--") is really tough. The finest opera singers can do this, Pavarotti to name one. Pavarotti can hit short, powerful notes like a stacatto trumpet, as can many professional tenors. But it's MUCH easier if you go "uh--" before taking off and shaking the house down with vocal decibels ("uh- MAaAaAaAaAH!!"). Think about why lots of vocalists pull their voices UP to the correct note, starting lower intentionally to work up to where they need to be. Even Celine Dion does this, and if she isn't a standard of high powerful singing I don't know who is. It's to get the vocal cords revved before takeoff.
There's just more control if your vocal cords are already vibrating when you go to sing something high. I parallel it to the strange phenomenon of hitting harmonics on a guitar - I can hit a harmonic just by picking and putting a little sliver of thumb across the string, but it's not 100% reliable if that's the first sound out of the guitar. On the other hand, if I pick the note first as a normal note, with strong vibrato in the left hand, THEN go for the harmonic right afterwards, it rings perfectly every time. Steve Vai does a lot of this. Same thing with the human voice, get it revved before hitting a high note and it's ah-VOOIII-CEEZZZ!!
Speaking of Racer X, that "Scarified" mp3 is EXCELLENT. Mirror mirror on the wall, will I get to hear Paul Gilbert live AT ALL??? Bring him to America, stupid mirror! Japan isn't the only place with mirrors dammit! The sound clip, short as it is, makes me think of a guitar commercial... Paul Gilbert and George Bellas are trying out guitars in a guitar store, when both of them accidentally trip over their cords at the same time. They crash into each other, tangling guitar strings and whammy bars into a big shred mess.
Paul: "Hey!! You got your 32nd note runs in my alternate picking exercises!!"
George: "Yeah? Well you got your damn alternate picking FRENZIES into my 32nd note runs!!"

Try Pull me Under or Under a Glass Moon as well... you'd probly be better off with PMU. For the Iced Earth content make sure you include The Hunter, A Question of Heaven, anything off Burnt Offerings (which is pretty heavy) and definitely the last three songs off Something Wicked. I also think some Stratovarius might be in order here. Oh! and Superior!

A quick note to wrap up the status of preorders for signed copies of this CD -- the final two orders (Dan Senko and Dan Maske) have been handed over to Knights of the Round for handling, as KotR is including a signed thingie with every order. Someone mentioned Moorcock's Elric/Eternal Champion mythos and wondered about bands who could turn in a concept album based on them. Savatage was mentioned, and that'd be cool indeed, but the band that instantly struck me was Payne's Gray, who already have an H.P. Lovecraft-based CD under their belts. Another possiblity: Therion (I -know- their song "The Wild Hunt" is from Some Fantasy Series, bt I can't place it).
Hmm, wild hunts, Great Hunts.... A Wheel of Time treatment on CD would be quite cool, but of course, in deference to its creator, it would have to run at least ten CDs in length and the later CDs would be 18 months delayed. :)
Side note for Those Who Were Watching: failing the sudden materialization of several thousands of dollars, DT won't be playing at Dragon*Con this coming summer. Hey, I tried. :) (At least we still have GWAR and The Changelings.....)

Are you also familiar with a little rock band called Blue Oyster Cult? They only were one of the bands to start the whole Heavy Metal thing (together with those guys from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple...) and they still kick ass in 1998! BOeC has at least 2 M.Moorcock inspired songs: Veteran of the Psychic Wars and Black Blade. The latter being a song about Elric and his sword Stormbringer. Hmm, gotta check for the lyrics of Stormbringer by Deep Purple... And if you're really into Moorcock's stuff, try to find the LPs he was playing on (yes, he is/was a Rockmusician himself, although it escapes me which instrument he played).

Hi Jammers,
I just got my copy of the DT video from a friend who lives in Boston (I couldn't find it in Canada). It's GREAT. Cover my eyes and Speak to me are very catchy song. I think James voice is getting better with time. There is no comparaison with the Live in Tokyo video. He has so much more control over his voice.
Also I have eight Frank Zappa tapes (brand new and not open) that I got as a gift. Since I have all of these tapes on CDs, I would like to sell them. The tapes are: Jazz from Hell, Guitar, Ship arriving to late, Overnite sensation, '(apostrophe), Joe's Garage (double), Make a jazz noize here (double) and Sheik Yerbouti. This set is an excellent introduction to Frank Zappa humor and excellent music. I am asking for 40$ US for all the package (including shipping to USA or Canada).
