Andreas, you're too German! Writing an umlaut into a non-German word! And
Moorcock didn't just inspire the songs - he co-wrote them. Blue Oyster Cult
should be part of everyone's rock adolescence - Buck Dharma has a great
guitar sound. Their best album is actually Imaginos, way past their 'Golden
era', with Fire Of Unknown Origin close behind. Moorcock's 'Black Blade' is
on 'Cultosaurus Erectus'. The radio classic 'Don't fear the reaper' is on
Agents of Fortune or any of the Greatest Hits collections.

As for his instrument, I think he played keyboards for Hawkwind a few times.

Well, I for one hate to say it but this glut of live cd's is getting on my nerves.
If ALL these live cd's were NEW STUDIO RECORDINGS I'd be happy to
die tomorrow. Now, if Enchant, Saga, Kitaro, ICE T, Lethal, etc, decide to put out a double live + cd, I will have to exact my vengeance on all of society, bar none.

mp3 sx-eom.mp3. Whatever the name of the song is, it rocks!! I was
wondering if anyone could let me know where I could find a few more mp3s
before I go and buy one of their CDs, and if anyone could make
suggestions as to what CD is a good one to buy by them.

This is the biggest load of horse shit! I don't care who LaBrie studied
under, how he uses his tongue, or how hard it is to sing that high. Many of
us on this list have been classically trained to play an instrument or sing.
Many have not. What difference does it make in this case other than to note
what LaBrie is 'trying' to do. You make the argument that because LaBrie
studied from a world renowned opera coach that he somehow knows his shit.
I'm sure he does, but what difference does it make when he is up on that
stage oversinging, cracking notes, and basically covering up some real
talent that is accompanying him. You know, I have an old DT bootleg with
LaBrie and he cracks so many notes that I would swear he just entered
puberty. He tries to sing so damn loud and high that he totally destroys
the song! OiAL is not much different in spots. He needs to back off. I
really doubt LaBrie did all that screaming during his lessons with his
'world renowned opera coach', and I doubt they taught it to him.

I'll flame just a little since I saw them live on video in their old
days. I agree that already 10 years his vocal is gone, as is the case
with Robert Plant and I really don't understand why these guys try to
scream! But it's far from listing Ian in bad screamers I guess! :) A
band like Purple should be judged according THEIR time. OK, I HATE Ian
vocal today, I HATE Plant vocal today, I HATE Roger Daltrey vocal today,
I HATE Jimmy Page playing today, but I will always be Purple, Zeps and
The Who fan! Woohoo, long live 70s rock!

IMHO, Ian Gillan is THE BEST HARD ROCK VOCAL ever! :)

And can all those negative-vibrations-spreading-guys, SHUT UP and let
OIALT be enjoyed by all! Believe me, you're doing enough damage with

In the LTE chat I saw question to Mike about live album on which Mr.
Portnoy answered that DT plans to do it. Redaing that, the guy who asked
that says: "How about a double live album? Huh!" So, it was beyong our

that part is incredibly falsetto. Yeah, it's impressive that he sings that high, but I think it sounds pretty cheezy since he can't add the fullness of his natural voice. Plus, that line just seems to be way too high in the mix relative to the otehr vocal parts, but that could just be a characteristic of it's highness and thin tone. go listen to it, and it's easy to hear the falsetto.

Scary, but the record stores in allentown, pa keep seeling out of DT stuff, and I have heard several times that DT is one of the best sellers! On top of that, I was at a hot dog eating contest with WZZO (95.1 out of allentown) and I won the new Rush CD. The DJ and I got talking about DYT and he loves them. He mentioned that one of the other DJs there WORSHIPS Dream Theater! I asked why i dont hear DT too much one hte radio and he said that they often play it at night (when I am asleep).

While I am on the topic of WZZO: They played the world premier of Different Stages with live interviews with Geddy and Alex (anyone tape this?), and they arent afraid to play 30 minute long songs such as 2112 or obscure Yes songs.

    Cheers for WZZO!!

So when is the Birch Hill show?

If I were James, I would teach a few of my caribou to sing, take them on tour with me, and have them fill in for me on stage when I'm having a bad night. That would make for some fucking entertainment, eh? :)

Hey all... I haven't posted in while, but here goes I was listening to OiaL and I noticed something pretty funny about James that I didn't notice before when I've seen him live. James is really lousy at announcing stuff : ) Like for instance.. at the end of "Puppies on Acid" as they are kicking into "JLMB" he says something like "Lets start having a good time... c'mon!" it sounded so dumb... I guess its because I'm used to hearing people like Phil Anselmo (of course hes high as a kite) screaming at the crowd.. or Ozzy dumping water on the crowd to get them pumped.. its funny to compare him to them as a frontman... But, I suppose that is not what I'm looking for when I listen to DT : ) But, I just wanna say.. OiaL is one of the best live albums that I have ever heard. Especially in comparison to Rush's new live album. The sound quality isn't particularly good on Rush's live album.. at least I think it could have been better, especially for the cost. Sure, Rush's was a triple disc.. but the sound quality could have been better. That another way wasn't quite on par. You see, we are dealing with neither rocket scientists nor brain surgeons here, these are rock singers we're talking about. So lighten up, won't you? If you are not in the mood to listen to some high pitch wailing (which I'm usually not), go check out some instrumental music that suits the mood. Why the aggravation?

As for singing high in the studio and then messing up or singing low in a live situation... I prefer the latter. On the other hand, I really don't give much of a damn how it's done in the studio, as long as it sounds good on the album. Really. What should I care whether guitarist N took two days to execute a relatively simple, yet melodic guitar lead, if he finally managed it and it kicks major butt on the finally finished product, commonly referred to as an album? Should I lose sleep over the fact that singer X couldn't get his shit together for an entire year because of throat problems, but then did a stellar job? Is it entirely up to me to complain that a certain rockband BJ had a stunt bass player and actually somebody else played his parts in the studio? It's the outcome that matters.

So, in short, this is an entertainment of some sort we're talking about. If something doesn't entertain you, pick something else.

Quiet, I keep it to myself, tension building slowly.

Yes, I've been quiet for a while, I think Dream Theater, Queensryche, Chroma Key, Fates Warning, Shadow Gallery, Tesla, and Def Leppard should get together and do a concept album for "The Death Gate Cycle" - IMO one of the best series ever written (after TLOTR) ;-) Anyway, how would these bands actually be inspired to write the music for a book? (otherwise I would have already done it myself). TDGC comes with one or two songs in standard notation in every single book (out of 7), so they could base it on that, I suppose.
