I reckon it must be about a year since D-Man gave up the FAQ. In that time,
if I recall correctly, we've had two actual updates and one or two
(very) minor bugfixes.
Does Pat still maintain that he's maintaining the FAQ?
On a completely unrelated note, I went to see that lovely Australian singer
(and ex-Neighbours actress) Natalie Imbruglia. She may not be metal, but
she certainly knows how to raise temperatures. Phew!
On a slightly more related note, I'll be going to see Bruce Dickinson (with
Adrian Smith) in a couple of weeks. I'm expecting this to be the gig of the
year (DT excepted, of course).
What was all the fuss about Tool? I read loads of good things about them on
the Jam recently, so I bought Aenima, and I think it's one of the most
terminally dull albums I've ever heard. Thankfully, I bought Anthrax's
"Volume 8 - The Threat is Real" at the same time, which has been
consistently blowing me away ever since. :-)

Yeah, what is it with Journey? Ansley Dunbar, another machine, played on one of their albums, too.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and they had a football player from the local team on (Todd Rucci, for any locals that care :) the show and allowed him to pick the tunes for somewhere around 30 minutes. Well, he picked most of the usual junk that "no true prog fan :)" would listen to. Then all of a sudden, on comes Yes' "Long Distance Runaround". This wasn't a classic hits station either (BCN, IIRC). No real point here, just thought it was cool to hear some Yes on the radio, and not one of the songs that weer played out like Roundabout or Owner of a Smelly Fart :)
Did anyone else notice, in the ad for the movie "Enemy of the State", that Trevor Rabin is doing the music? Nice to see he still can get work, after being crucified worldwide by every "true" Yes fan :))))
Two Yes-related sightings in one day, woo hoo!

Klaus Meine (Scorpions) Sometimes a screamer. Dennis DeYoung & Tommy Shaw (Styx) Material not that challenging. Bruce Dickinson (Maiden & BD) Not bad at all. Rob Halford (Judas Priest & RH) Usually Screams live :(
I agree with most of these. Here are some I would add:
Devin Townsend - Used to sing for Steve Vai, now in 2 groups (Strapping Young Lad and Ocean Machine): Even though i think he sounds horrible in SYL, he sounds awesome on Ocean Machine. Yea, there's a scream sometimes but the emotion in that scream will make your spine tingle!
Jon Anderson - of Yes: The staple sound of any and all Yes songs is this guys voice. Almost perfect pitch every time, even live.
Steve Perry - of Journey: Yea its pop, but this dude can hit some high notes
Robert Plant - (the great): one of the best ranges in Rock music. Nuff said...

Hi everyone!
I know James' singing on OiaLT has been discussed fully on the list and that some of you are sick and tired of hearing about it. I also noticed that some of you guys are really getting aggressive, but remember: part of liking a person or a particular kind of music/band is being able to point out his/her/its faults (or let's say: fault"ettes").
Anyway, James probably had some difficulties with his monitor system on that night in Paris. Hell, anyone who's ever been on stage (and singers in particular) knows that the noise level can be murder. I remember one concert where I thought I had sung pretty well....it was only when I heard a recording of that gig that I noticed how shitty some of it sounded....what I'm trying to say here is that it's difficult to control your voice when you're having problems hearing yourself sing.
However, I also believe that you should always be able to reproduce the way you sang in the studio on stage, even if that means selecting and changing certain hook lines and phrases before recording. You can do practically anything (pitch shifting etc.) in the studio but I'm sure you agree that on stage and in front of an audience is where it's at! So part of writing lyrics and composing songs is being able to recognise your own limits (high notes etc.) and working within a comfortable vocal range.
That's about it, Phil

In addition to "Enemy of the State" (which I was not aware of), Rabin did the score for "Armageddon" and "The Rock" and some others. He's also doing the score for an upcoming movie named "Jack Frost" with Michael Keaton. It's about a rock band, I think, but I don't know any more than that. Rabin's actually acts in the movie too, which will probably be a riot. I think I'm going to have to see it, seeing as IMDB has, among cast members, Henry Rollins and Dweezil Zappa.

Hey, guys. Home sick from work today and last night, I just got the ELP CD, Then and Now, which is a double live CD. Got it at CDNOW. It is really cool. The first half is a recording of an old concert and if you have elp's first double live CD, you aren't missing anything. But the last half of Cd 1 and all of CD 2 are from their last tour and it is very cool to hear modern versions of their stuff. Go and find this one if you like ELP. Secondly, I have on back order Platypus and would love to know what other think of it. I know I won't be disappointed, but just want to have a sneak preview.

I just had this thought. Since I am blind and can't see the videos, but would love to hear them, is their any way that one of you guys, either with a good hi-fi vcr and a good tape deck, or even one of you sick people with a CD burner could make me an audio copy of the DT videos, Live in Tokyo, 5yialt, and mayube even the japanese ppv video? I have some Mike Bahr CD-r duplicates I could run off on tape for you, since I don't have a cd burner yet, but I would really love to hear these things. Any takers can email me at dfibraio@home.com.

Well, no book contains all of the stories, as there are too many to fit in one book. Well, OK, maybe they would fit into one book, but it would be really, really big. I'd start with "At The Mountains Of Madness & Other Tales" and some of the other paperback reprint collections.

Whatever the name of the song is, it rocks!! I was wondering if anyone could let me know where I could find a few more mp3s before I go and buy one of their CDs, and if anyone could make suggestions as to what CD is a good one to buy by them. ><
The Eyes of Medusa from The Divine Wings of Tragedy album. I a friend of mine made a tape of the album for me (which I lost after about a month), but I've never been more impressed by a band. Talk about beyond expectation. You don't need to listen to more MP3s, you will like the album, trust me. However, I haven't had much luck finding it. SO if you find it somehere for an unridiculous price, let me know.
