<<Well, to my knowledge, he uses his double bass in fills and breaks, rather
than riding on them as continuous 16th notes. As far as songs goes, I
can't remember any specific fills or beats, and I don't have any CDs with
me for a few days. Anyone out there?>>

I know that I DEFINITELY hear double bass douring the "chorus" part of
Working Man on the 3rd CD from Different Stages (thats why they call me the
workin man! dada dada dada etc...that part) and also on Closer to the Heart at
the end on Different Stages. My guess is that its not as noticable when he does
it as when someone like, say Portnoy would do it, mainly because of how high
the bass drum might be set in the mix.

Someone wondered: "Does anyone think Fates Warning 'got good' with No Exit and Perfect Symmetry?"

No, Awaken The Guardian is a tremendous album. It took a little while to grow on me when I first got it, but it's great. "Guardian" is one of those few songs that just absolutely takes you to another place. Simply magical. The rest of the album's quite good as well. Arch wrote cool lyrics, too.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. This could be a big moneymaker. I see it now:-- Liv Tyler, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alanis Morrissette and her naked MTV sucking ass, Tori Spelling, Sharon Stone, and Calista Flockhart in "Reservoir Tip Dogs." The girls play big time criminals attempting to hold the world hostage from their secret base in Alcatraz. But one of them is a traitor, and the violence escalates with hilarious concequences.

Interspliced with terribly artistic sepia-toned scenes of Jennifer Love Hewitt eating out Sharon Stone (which continues until the end of the movie, when Liv Tyler bursts into their secret love nest with an AK-47 and turns them into hamburger meat), the terrorists combat a crack anti-terrorist force led by Keanu Reeves and the doomed Brad Pitt--and each other.

Many deaths ensue. Chainsaw, explosively boobytrapped feminine wash, explosions, incendiary grenades, rocket launchers, falling rock-- sometimes three or four at the same time. When Liv Tyler finally gets it from Keanu Reeves' sword play amidst the final firefight, the combination beheading/shooting/burmese tiger trap/sprayed with gasoline by the dying Calista and set on fire/infection by the terrorist's super-ebola virus/paper cut death is pure Academy Awards material.

I'm buying an advance ticket right now and they haven't even started shooting.

I grabbed it from the Laser's Edge ( http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd ) for $18. Well worth that ridiculously low price for a two-disc set of such great stuff. BTW, Laser's Edge also has insane prices on Symphony X CDs, for the fellow who was inquiring about good places to get Symphony X.

Yeah, but Ray doesn't smoke. :) (well, not really, but with all the time FW's spent in smoke-filled clubs over the years, you'd think it'd be pretty much the same thing).

I'll wait for the next QR album to see if Geoff has made as big a turnaround vocals-wise as it's rumored; reports are good from what I hear.

    Hey all -

Just wanted to make a request for someone to get a recording of one of MP's upcoming drum clinics. He does this MAD drum solo in the middle of the show which is a medley of a TON of classic rock, metal, and pop song drum beats. Very cool stuff, but I only brought a camera when I saw the clinic in Albany, NY. I would assume that the policy holds true everywhere: they allowed cameras, audio, and video taping at the Albany clinic. If someone gets a good recording of the solo, maybe they can send it off to Ryan Whitaker or somebody for inclusion on a CD boot? :-)

    Hey -

    One more thing...

Does anyone know where I can get a hold of a CD copy of DT's "Live Bonus Tracks"? I think I remember somewhere back, this was mentioned to be a promo, maybe in France? Derek's got it listed on his official site in the discography, in case anyone's interested to see what it looks like (www.dereksherinian.com). The track list looks like it contains the BMS/AH/TKH medley from the Japanese "Hollow Years", but it also has CIA9ITG and TAMP also LIVE! I'll even settle for a CDR copy, if anyone has the capability to make me a copy. Surely, SOMEONE on this list must have a copy. Please drop me a line. Thanx!!

    Hi jammers...

I want to know what=B4s your definition of fast drummers...

I think Virgil Donati is the fastest drummer on the whole world...but...i= s he a drummer?? i think he=B4s an acrobat...

To me, the drums aren=B4t to be played fast...but MUSICALLY played...

Sure...tehre are too many drummers that are fast...and also...very musical...like Simon Phillips!

My concept of fast drummer and also very musical is BILLY COBHAM...

He puts any of the drummers on his feets...and...let=B4s compare the musi= cal importance of Billy Cobham,...with the liquefier sound of Virgil Donati=B4= s solos...

It=B4s just my point of view...

    Cheers...

    I'll tell you the truth

you're gonna burn in a lake of fire

but that being besides the point, lemme just say this

    > Also I'm curious whether most people think Fates "got good" on No > Exit, or Perfect Symmetry. Input?

Fates Warning got "good" (in my book anyway)with Awaken The Guardian. Fates is a band in which you can definitely see a progression from album to album (use of the word entirely valid, and not facetitious), all the way from the Maiden clone days of night on brocken through parallels.....

then they tried to re-capture parallels in Inside Out, and then realizing what they'd done, they went completely out of left field on APSOG. one man's opinion

but it was on Awaken the Guardian that Fates really found themselves as a band for the first time.....TSW is sorta their experiment with what music we can create on our own that doesn't rip off Steve Harris too blatantly, and AtG is the realization of that exploration.

If you see No Exit as the maturation of fates, then I'll say this....notice how Ray Alder tries to emulate much of John Arch's vocal stylings on that album....if you've ever heard any live fates from that era, ray completely, well, sucks....it's, at least for me, very tough to listen to his vocals, and at the same time, believe that its the same guy who totally blew me away, vocally, twice on the APSOG tour, and again on Still Life, and I'm told on the video (whenever it is that i get around to purchasing it)

    Hey,

I saw that someone in an earlier jam wanted to know some stuff about Conception. Yes, they do have a website up, or rather did.. *quick check* - yup, there it is:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/1360/ I don't think they have any sound samples up.. last time I checked it was under construction. The maintainer is a bit slow on stuff, too, just so you know. The only mp3 file I found would be part of "The Last Sunset" by them, which I would be happy to ICQ over or something. If anyone has any other places to find (possibly full) mp3s of their songs, I myself would greatly appreciate it as well!! Conception is some kickass stuff, I really highly endorse it to anyone and everyone. It's a shame they broke up.

    >I can not get MP3 files right, so I'm screwed when it comes to the >Ytsejam on kb. What can I do? There is a LOT of MP3 crap out there >now, and I just get stupid writing... Well, one thing you might want to do is to right-click on the link, and "save as" - it's worked for me when I had problems and kept getting the stupid gibberish. Sorry if this makes it to the jam after someone else mentions it....just trying to share my (minimal) computer wisdom! :)

Actually Vinnie Paul couldn't even touch MP - he plays 'heavier' maybe, but the velocity that one can strike with a drum skin with doesn't mean shit and MP is faster than VP anyday.

Btw, as far as speed is concerned (on all limbs), along with overall technique and precision, Virgil Donati tears all over both of them - BIGTIME!!
