Back in their day, they weren't called "gay lovers." The more poignant

James C. Shields recites from a rag Mike Portnoy blew his nose in:
>>>OH MY FUCKING GOD! I just got back from a Bozzio drum clinic in San
Antonio, and all I have to say is that there is not a better drummer on
the planet! Black Light Syndrome, Explorer's Club, and Sex & Religion
don't even begin to show just how incredible this man is. Portnoy ain't
shit and Peart ain't all that great compared to this guy (and believe
me, I know how much that is saying.<<<
Never heard the man myself. But Portnoy keeps winning polls, and it
seems you may have your order reversed. I KNOW that Mike Portnoy can
blow chunks on Neil Peart, and you imply Peart is better than Portnoy...
so I don't believe a word you say about Bozzio :-)

Good day, fellow guitar afficionadoes!
Apologies if this message is perhaps a little bit off-topic, but I do
think it concerns something of interest to all lovers of rock and heavy
metal guitar music...
I have set up a Shred WebRing with the intent join together Web Sites
related to virtuoso guitarists (or bands they're in), general guitar- or
guitar-music oriented sites and guitar manufacturers. With all these
sites in one ring, it is a piece of cake to surf from one to another, or
even jump to a random site covering a band/guitarist/guitar you've never
heard of before or that you didn't know had a web site at all!
If you happen to run a site that falls within this category, please
surf over to http://www.capnasty.org/shred to check out the Shred
WebRing and perhaps even join!

Ok, I just looked at the track listing for Garage, Inc by Metallica. (yeah, soory I used the M word). Though their last couple of albums of completely sucked I really like their order covers. I went to CD-NOW and checked out the track listing (which is completely wrong BTW) and was supsrised to see a few old Mercyful Fate tracks on there Evil, Curse of the Pharoahs, Satan's Fall, A Corpse without Soul (this was listed as two tracks, A Corpse and Without Soul...someone at CD-NOW needs to look at their own database) I don't know about any other old Fate fans but I'm actualy interested to hear these songs performed. Though Metallica has managed to fuck up anything original in the last two albums their remakes have been pretty good.
Anyhow just wanted to strike up a conversation that didn't deal with 1) Vocalists 2) Female/Male Jammer bashing or 3) Shortcomings of OIAL

Hi all
I've been buying lots of CDs recently, and the new arrivals in my collection include the following three:
SHADOW GALLERY - Tyranny STRATOVARIUS - Destiny SYMPHONY - X
All of them are fairly good (Shadow Gallery possibly being my personal favourite) and would get 8/10 if I wrote reviews (which I will refrain from doing because there have been enough already posted). But I'm afraid I have one gripe with all of them - they are all fairly predictable to a certain extent. Even when listening to the songs for the first time I had an sort of gut feeling about when solos were going to come and also when guitar/keyboard duelling (a very tired prog cliche) was coming up. This applies less to Shadow Gallery but they are also guilty. This is one aspect of Dream Theater that appeals to me so much: with very few exceptions, you don't know what a song is going to do or where it is going to go once it has started. Does anybody else think this?
Only 6 hours to go until Slayer/Sepultura - my poor ears.
stay sage and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Wishbone Ash - Live Dates

That's not necassarily true that Portnoy is "better" or to use your term "can blow chunks on" Peart. They are two totally different drummers. If anything a direct comparison between Portnoy and Bozzio would be more feasible, since I think Bozzio was one of Mike's major (most major) influences. Mike has also been heavily influenced by heavy metal drumming like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth (early), Sepultura, etc... Which also ties into the discussion about Peart using double bass. Peart used it more as an assistant to rolls/fills, where as Mike uses it both for that and for a riding or "driving", as I like to call it, paterns. Anyway, just my two cents worth. OH yeah, but if you are able to find a picture of Bozzio's most recent kit setup, I think you might think twice!! DAMN!! It's like no other (single) kit I've ever seen. WOWW!!!!

Hello all,
I saw Journey in concert in Spartanburg, SC last week and yes it was Steve Auggeri on vocals. They sounded great and I thought Neil was great (i.e. able to wail). Jonathan Cain spent some time on vocal as well and they even did two instrumental pieces. All in all, it rocked.

Hey Vladimir,
I agree with you Vladimir (since I posted about VIRGIL DONATI in the first = place) that he is most likely the fastest drummer on the face of the = planet. And I don't just mean, death metal double bass drumming that = sound like explosions. This man plays drum parts like double strokes and = inverted double stokes, paradiddles, etc. faster with his feet than most = drummers can with their hands. You just have to see it to believe it. = Modern Drummer Festival 1997 Video (hint, hint)
When it comes to other fast drummers, I would have to say VINNIE COLAIUTA. = I just recently went to a drum clinic of his here in Richmond, VA and he = blew me away once again. Even though he primarily plays fussion/jazz now = on his solo albums, he played a lot of his old Zappa stuff as well. Like = the infamous 21/16 drumbeat.
But, no doubt, when you speak "music" and "drums" in the same sentence, = you sound like a fool unless you also include the words TERRY BOZZIO. He = has taken drumming to an entirely new, uncharted territory. I also caught = one of his drum clinics here in Richmond, VA recently. He plays music, = not drumbeats. I highly recommend getting his latest solo release, = "Drawing the Circle". You can order it from www.audiophileimports.com = that's the only place I've found it on the net.
But, this post wouldn't be fare without mentioning my all time favorite = drumming inspiration, MIKE PORTNOY. This man almost combines all the = above traits and talents and creates his own sound.
Well I'm done now. (Drummers be heard) Kevin Rackley Official Soul Reason Website http://members.aol.com/rackleyk/

I was able to see Journey almost a month ago in Syracuse, NY. They were phenominal. The new singer is great. I am a die hard Journey fan and thought he did a great job. My roommate likes them but went more to humor me and couldn't tell it was a different singer. We were the youngest people there which was weird but it was great to hang out with a large group of Journey fans who actually listened to them when they were in their prime. The consensus after the show was that it was a terrific show and they were all very congenial and signed autographs by the buses afterwards. If you like Journey at all and they are playing near you (I know the tour is limited) I suggest you go.

Greetings ye 'jamanoids...
After reading my remarks about Geoff Tate smoking and Ray Alder *not*, Raitz whacked me over the head with: >Well, as much as I've heard, it's pretty much the other way round: Geoff >Tate has quit smoking and Ray Alder inhales thru the filter at least 40 >units a day. >I'm only sure about the former, though, the Ray thing is just me quoting >what's been said on the jam.
Woopsy. That's what I get for not checking the facts before I report them. :) I know Geoff has quit smoking (which might help account for his vocal turnaround), but I didn't know Ray smoked.
Ain't it funny how smoking gives some people a cool voice (Leonard Cohen) while on others it destroys something that was once mighty? Weird.
