In a message dated 98-11-20 15:19:47 EST, you write:

<< old albums, but Sony? Wonder if they're doing something to bring back glam,
    >even if for only a few months. Maybe Lita Ford won't die before the
    >resurgence of metal, after all! ;)
    >
    >Okay, discuss..
    >
Okay. They're trying their best to do it. The problem with CMC used to be that
you could never find their albums in stores (meaning their distribution
sucked). However, since the CMC-BMG merger, a lot of the CMC albums are easier
to find in stores than they were before. I see two main problems with CMC's
ability to "bring back" glam. First, they have no push at radio. Air time is
hard enough to come by for major label artists playing the flavor-of- the-
month music , let alone indie bands playing a style of music that the "cool"
people want to forget even happened. And with CMC having significantly less
money to through at program directors than even the lowest rung on the major
label ladder, that prospect doesn't seem to be changing. The second problem
with CMC is their completely illogical practice of not signing any new
(meaning unestablished) bands. They sign bands like Warrant, Slaughter,
Motorhead, etc, all of which have a proven track record. If glam or any
offshoot thereof is going to make a "comeback," it is going to be on the
shoulders of a new crop of bands that don't have the "80s" stigma attached to
their names. This is what happened in the 80s, when bands like Motley Crue,
Posion, and Bon Jovi burst onto the scene, which at the time was heavily
dominated by new wave bands. Musically they really weren't doing anything that
KISS, Aerosmith, and even Thin Lizzy weren't doing in the 70s. They just put
their own little spin on the formula and the industy ate it up. That's what is
going to have to happen if hard rock is going to make a comeback.

    Now, for something completely different.....

I don't understand. At the time of the first return, does the band have
to return their royalty? Usually, when you return a product, the store
can send it back to the manufacturer so that they can get reimbursed in
turn. Is the case in the recording industry? If so, does the band get to
keep their share anyway? Or must they return their royalties for that
     returned product?

In a way. This is called "reserves." Basically, based on your record contract,
a certain percentage of your royalties (usually in the 30% range) is set aside
so the record company can cover their asses if the stores return their product
(the stores will usually get a full refund, but not always). You don't
actually receieve this money at first (if at all), so you don't really have to
give your royalty back for each returned item. After a period of time, your
reserves are "liquidated" and the money left over after returns is yours to
keep no matter how you finish in the game :)

If they *don't* have to return those royaltees, then wouldn't the band
be profiting twice from the same disc?

    See above.

If the argument is that used cd buyers should try to buy new, to help
the band out, I don't think that's fair. Do you not buy stuff on sale?
Do you not try for a lower price on your new car, even thought the
difference will come right out of the dealer's margin? The customer has
to look out for No.1, especially if the customer plans to buy more stuff
     in the future.

The reason you should buy new (or at least the reason I buy new) is not to
help the artist out financially, but so that the purchase is registered with
Soundscan, so that the album will chart at a higher position. It's all about
perception in this business and if an album is perceieved to be a rising star
(bullet), then the odds that people will back it are that much greater
because, regardless of whether or not they actually like it, people
instinctively want to get behind a winning team (fair-weather fans, if you
will). This helps the band in the long run more than the dollar and some
change they will receieve from my purchase. This does not happen when you buy
used CDs for obvious reasons. I personally love to buy used CDs. I would never
have discovered how truly great the band Journey is, had it not been for used
CDs. And sure enough, when they released "Trial By Fire" and the "Greatest
Hits- Live" albums, I bought them new the first day they came out. Plus, these
used CD stores often have albums that are no longer availbe in retail stores,
so they can be a real gold mine. Just don't shop at them exclusively.

            That would be incorrect.

For the *real* answer as to why Peter quit and how Phil got the
job, there happens to be a nice little FAQ (which, oddly enough, I run)
    that has the answer: http://www.erotomania.org/genesis/faq.htm

Phil recently found his arms. They were tied to a Roland 808, and
had shown little wear, considering the last time he used them was in 1981.

I'll finally throw my two cents in on this one. Portnoy is definitely on
my list, but so is Igor Cavalera from Sepultura. He's probably my
favourite. He's got some really amazing work on "Roots" and "Chaos A.D."

To the guy who wanted to hear more Vinnie Colaiuta, get
Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar by Zappa. This is all instrumental
and way "out there" sort of fusiony music. The first song
is written as 5/4 5/4 5/8 with the drums ignoring the bar
lines altogether. After this song, the music gets complicated.

For something more palatable, you may want to try Joe's
Garage. The songs are groovier, and the drumming is
         brilliant. Vinnie rules.

I can't believe all of you guys posting about drummers have
failed to mention one DENNIS CHAMBERS. Hello? Remember him?
This guy makes Portnoy (and everyone else, with the possible
exception of Bozzio) look like big useless fucks (hi Mike!).
My old drum teacher had a video of his (anyone know what it's called?)
and I saw him do a clinic once. Fear him. If John McLaughlin
comes to your town, go to the show as Dennis is playing with
         him.

The Korg X3 is a really good one for the money, I bet a used one would be real cheap. The New version is the N364, but I think this is over a thousand dollars new, and I don't know what you mean by cheap. Workstations generally aren't cheap. the X3 was something like 1200 new a few years ago. if you're going for under 1000 dollars, I think the only choice is a used model. If you get into stuff like an on-board hard disk, you're getting into expensive Trinity and Kurzweil K2000 area, which are most definitly not cheap (but so damn cool!)
